When it first came out I admit I was tempted by the promo pics, but I think the photography and styling were so lovely and romantic it was really the atmosphere and idea of the dress that I liked! The dress honestly looks low quality and the construction as well I think would definitely be disappointing, but this is just my opinion and I haven’t seen the dress in person! At the end of the day people like what they like and it may very well be great!

>> No.10277727

what about the dress looks low quality?
genuine question, I'm newer to this style and don't have quite the eye for things like that ^^

>> No.10277754

>>10277727
At a glance the things that stand out would be the ribbons and the buttons but the overall fabric looks like low-end highstreet quality, if that makes sense. Its difficult to gauge without seeing a piece in person but there’s a certain something that lower-quality dresses have that you can usually spot once you get more familiar with lolita pieces. I think with a design like this they need to either go all out with the quality or else scale back the design. A simpler piece would get away with it but there are a lot of features and ruffles etc that can betray quality issues.
I’m by no means saying it’s an ita disaster though! It’s certainly a cute dress and not a bad addition to a wardrobe, but I personally wouldn’t be happy with it.

Sorry I didn’t realise you said you were new to the style, rather than to lolita! Generally for clasic pieces you can’t rely on print or design concept to carry a dress. Construction and quality are really crucial! I wouldn’t really even consider this dress classic in the traditional sense, it’s very similar to btssb pieces like Coppelia.

NTA, but the fabric looks stiff and a bit thin at the same time, which is really weird, especially for a fall/winter dress. The lace and ribbons are thin as well. Generally thin fabrics are cheaper because you can get away with fewer threads in the same yard of fabric. In addition, cheap fabric like this drapes poorly, making it less flattering on.
Also, the sewing quality doesn't look great. There's no real reason to have a seam at the elbows, other than to save money. It looks weird, and plenty of brand dresses are able to achieve the same effect without doing that. Also, the ruffles on the neck, cuffs, and hem are just serged at the ends. This is a very common cost-cutting measure in garment manufacture these days.
Lastly, the buttons on the dress are not only obviously plastic, but they don't even match the brooch. They should have picked one metal and one stone color for all of the detailing. It looks like they just picked whatever was cheapest and similar to the design they were going for. I wouldn't be surprise if the finishings changed between dresses.

Btw, I know I sound super critical here, but I just want people to know what to look for. If you like the dress, wear it! It doesn't look like it's embarassingly low quality or anything. It's just not made with as much care as dresses from the likes of MM/VM

Nayrt but I think it looks much better when ruffles are finished with a narrow hem or “normal” rolled hem wherein the raw edge is encased in fabric, rather than a serged rolled hem wherein the raw edge is encased in thread. It’s confusing because both types are often called rolled hems but one uses mostly thread whereas the other is folded twice. This isn’t super black and white and sometimes a serged hem is perfectly fine, but on thinner wovens like that Taobao dress it’s clearly a cost-cutting and time-saving choice. It’s especially grating (IMO) when the thread doesn’t perfectly match the fabric and the stitch length is long enough that you can clearly see the individual stitches.

IW 2020 Happy Packs are on the way! Chemical Lace Flare OP in Bordeaux, Grey or Black seems to be the focal point. ¥80,000, ¥50,000 and ¥30,000 available.

For me, it's the lengths. I've loved several of the solid dress designs this year, but nearly every release has been 100cm+ in length and as someone who is barely 5'1", I'm tired of being swamped in my dresses. What happened to having both short and long cuts!?

I have a friend in my comm who also struggles with the trend of longer cuts because of height. She and I are both short but I'm busty and she isn't so my chest will naturally shorten the dress a little but on her it's just long sad sacks and we both avoid lucky packs out of fear of getting the wrong cuts that will give us weird fit issues or require alteration.

Really loving the spring collection. I adore this dress design in particular (hoping it maybe comes in gray?), but it's clear IW won't be shortening their dresses for a long time yet... oh well, maybe it really is time to consider buying stuff to have shortened. I'm just afraid of a tailor chopping it up poorly...

But also echoing the sentiment bemoaning the polyester and the lack of blouses, especially? What the hell, IW has barely put out any blouses all year.

>>10304592
I really like this JSK in black but I'm not sold on the fabric, either... Even if the quality of their polyester is nicer than most I think the sheen looks very formal and will make it difficult to wear outside an event.

>I think the sheen looks very formal and will make it difficult to wear outside an event.

I have this problem with it too. I have a few pieces with that kind of polyester shantung and I like them, but they're mostly formal pieces that I either feel look a bit costumey or I worry about snagging. I've been after the perfect A line classic skirt for a while so I thought this one might be it, but I'm worried the shiny fabric will make it look more grey than black or it won't look/feel as good in real life. If they put out ready stock in a few months and I still like it I'll buy it then, I guess.

That entirely depends on your own measurements. I'm 167cm and Japanese L size and it was tight for me since I'm larger than the average Japanese girl. Oh damn, really? I have 37.5 shoulders and have been abstaining from buying brand OPs because I thought that with their 32-35cm listed shoulder measurements they would never fit me. I had to sell a bunch of brand blouses because they felt too tight in the shoulders and the only ones that do fit comfortably were listed as 37-38cm shoulder measurement.

Can someone with wider shoulders chime in on this? I’d love to know if VM OPs might actually fit me after all!

>> No.10309475

>>10307917
It's hit-or-miss. My shoulders are 36 cm and their recent plaid blouse felt snug on me. On the other hand, their OPs generally fit me fine and have a little more space, other than the puff-sleeve OPs; those tend to be tight on me. The recent Victorian Rose OP had really puffy sleeves, so you might be able to fit it.

Idk if the 2014 dress was a main release or not, but the 2019 dress is from this year's winter LP. Unless the 2014 one is from an LP too, it's a bit unfair to compare them. LP dresses almost always use old patterns and leftover or cheaper materials, after all.

I feel you on both accounts, anon, haha. I waited years for Elise Rose to pop up and was so happy when I finally managed to get it, the details are just SO beautiful on it, the cut is super flattering and the fabric is unbelievably comfortable.

>>10311446
I would agree with this... I would say the better comparison point for quality dip would be any of their older polyester (especially any that use that 'CD tropical' fabric) dresses vs the newer ones. The newer releases with that sort of fabric are noticeably more stiff, papery and just unpleasant feeling to wear than older ones, which feel much softer and drape more nicely. It's one of the factors that has put me off buying any further new release solid dresses, even if I love the design (like the princess seamed yoke one anon mentioned above).

I bought pic related because I loved how it looked in the stock photos but just found myself feeling very blah about it when I received it and wore it the first couple times. The fabric feels too crisp.

could it be that it's starched more and a wash would soften it up, or you've tried that?

So the skirt came today. The colouring is actually a bit more soft and muted than it shows up on camera and the fabric is surprisingly thicker than I expected it to be. It's definitely somewhat thicker than BTSSB's cotton if you've felt that. Definitely not for super hot weather, but since I'm in summer right now I'm going to wear it on cooler days because I can't wait that long. Ideally it's good for Autumn coords or if you don't have harsh winters.

Length wise, I've only tried it on without a petticoat so far but It comes just below mid calf on me and I'm about 158cm tall. It has an invisible zipper on one side and a pocket on the other. The corset lacing on the back is sewn into loops which are pretty sturdy. The only thing I worry about is the loops for the buttons to do the bustle back, as they feel like they might break over time holding the weight of the skirt up. The buttons are sewn on quite loosely too but that's an easy fix.

I think that's about it, I'll attach detail pictures in my next post but let me know if you have any questions.

OP of the sale says herself that it's a 'personal brand.' I'm assuming it's just a very small indie brand.

There are a lot of those in Japan, some obviously better than others, but also very intriguing. I wish they were more accessible online, but a lot of them sell at local markets like the biannual Gothic and Lolita Market, pic related.

There was one brand that did 1830s style mutton sleeves with a lolita silhouette, kind of crazy but I loved it. I'll try to find it.

Anyone received their innocent world lucky packs yet? It seems all the Japanese 20k instore bags contained the same things, the Christmas dress from this year or two years ago, and the glitter cat dress. I wonder what made up the rest of the 80k bags

>> No.10318958

>>10318850
I was just looking at mercari and fril and dreading what I'm going to get... waiting on my 50k bag.

Looks like everyone got the terrible A-line cut of the cat print in pink and 2+ dresses of glitter snow fairy or whatever it's called. I was hoping for some castoffs of solid pieces at least, hopefully I don't have to end up selling most of my pack.

IW barely releases blouses and accessories anymore to begin with, so maybe their LP aren't worth it now that it's just going to be 3 of the same dress no one wants and no wardrobe padding pieces...

It has been a while since the millefeuille bolero was stocked. I feel like they usually stock it in the springtime though, so I bet you that it'll come up again within the next few months.

Last year I think was when they released that new rose lace cardigan. It probably replaced millefeuille for this year (I loved that cardigan personally, I'm tempted to get it in the other colorway now that it's on sale but I wish they had released it in another color or two).
