I'm working on Nezuko from Kimetsu no Yaiba and I need help identifying what she's wearing so I can research proper patterning and fabric choices etc. Afaik she seems to be wearing a kimono with a long haori over it. She has an obi, an obiage and an obijime, but what I'm puzzled about is the rolled/bunched up hem of her kimono. Does it have a name? Is it something that's done in real life? I'd love to find photos of actual people wearing their kimono like that.

So I have most of pic related patterned out and traced onto EVA foam, is it realistic to think I can get this done in 3 weeks? I probably have a collective of 80 - 100 free hours to work on it.
I've never worked with EVA foam before or have made anything resembling armor so this is a new to me.

>> No.10212453

I did heat seal the foam first. I might not have heat sealed it enough. I judged by checking if surface was smooth or not, but maybe I should have just blasted the foam on super high heat for longer. Although head sealing the foam would also curl it. I tried putting something underneath but it would still curl. I think I might have to use some double sided tape to keep it flat.

I don't have much experience working with foam. The reason why I'm using 2mm foam is because I want a really thin profile, but it's giving me more trouble than it's worth. Has no one else experienced these warping issues at low thickness? What's the thinnest mm foam you all have used that didn't give any issues heat sealing and priming?

Firstly I'd advise you to put together a showcase if your best work which also displays your prices. Beyond that I'd say to post on social media and tag your work so it appears in people's searches. Working with commercial characters who are popular also makes it easier for people to see your work and then if their interested will see your prices. This is the easiest way I know of

not sure if this is the right thread, but I'll ask anyway:
I've been wanting to cosplay vincent law from ergo proxy for a while now (like pic related) and I have the means to make 90% of it on my own. the only issue is the body/face paint... do any of you consider something like this to be blackface (I'm white, also like the guy in pic related) / do you think it would make other people feel uncomfortable?

>> No.10213597

>>10213578
is "blackface iven that bad when done in the context of a cosplay? You aren't mocking anybody or looking down on anyone, you are just respecting the character by cosplaying as them.

>> No.10213615

>>10213597
I suppose it's more about intent, yeah, but I've still seen white cosplayers get called out for darkening their skin to play certain characters (which I think is a valid criticism, to be clear. you should be able to cosplay a character of a different race without changing your skin color, that goes for everybody).
my issue with vincent is that it's not really a racial thing? his proxy form is just a really dark grey/black, not black in the racial sense. the mask alone might be enough to avoid it being called blackface, but I guess it still worries me.
I'm probably overthinking this, sorry for the blogposting

I tought the historical stuff was mainly dark black with big round red lips. Would just darkening your skin actually be that bad? It kinda feels ridiculous for a person to get upset just for someone painting their skin darker. Not that I have plans on cosplaying as a person of colour

That turtleneck is black. But my advice, look at the tag that says what kind of fiber it is and get dye made for that fiber. Going from white to a dark color you may have to do it in two or more rounds.
>>10213578
I don't think it's blackface but people might still say it. Most people won't care though. If you're really scared make your facepaint more grey than black or another unnatural color like dark blue.
>>10213597
>>10213660
I just think regardless of intent, if the thing you're doing is hurting and upsetting a lot (and I mean millions) of people who have a genuine reason to be hurt and upset by that kind of thing, even if you don't personally believe it to be bad, it's very disrespectful to all those people. It's just so easy to not do that. That's why I won't do it and I won't support cosplayers who do it. Anything beyond that is between you, your god, and concerned Twitter users.

Has anyone ever packed wings as checked baggage (flying from between Canada/US)? I'm wondering what the approximate cost would be if it's possible.

If it's not possible or too expensive, is there a good way to make each wing separate into 2 pieces to reduce the size? I'm making them out of wire, felt, and real feathers so weight won't be an issue. The harness and wings will be detachable from each other and will look similar to the set pictured, each wing measuring about 50" L X 25" W.

Couple of questions, first, I have an Arda wig in fairy blonde that I want to use for Sypha, any recommendations on what shade of Rit/iDye to use to get the color? CowbuttCrunchies has their dye chart and I’m leaning towards iDye orange since I’ll have the yellow base, but should I attempt to add a touch of brown, or would that make it too dark? Her hair is that weird mix of not quite brown, blonde, or peach.

Also, would transpa art be too heavy for a pretty big set of fairy wings? The ones I’m looking to make would be just about as tall as me (gonna make them smaller than exact scale would be) and they’re colored a rainbow gradient that looks kind of stained glass-ish, and I know transpa takes dye relatively well. Just don’t want to die carrying them on my back.

Trying to do Ozymandias as an EVA foam dipshit beginner.
Patterned pic related as a straight up rectangular bicep bracelet and cut it out using 5MM foam.
I intended to do this with the rectangle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ5NhDV-YBM and forming it to shape with a heat gun.
After doing what the above video does and before gluing/heat gunning it, trying to form the raw foam into shape doesn't make for a smooth circle, it juts out.
Trying to cut a little triangle to remove the points doesn't seem to be working

Please help this dumdum. Am I supposed to pattern this in a different way?
I legitimately don't even know what to google to solve this.
Getting super thick foam and just beveling it down would probably the the simplest solution, but I unfortunately don't have the time for that as I'm trying to get this done fast.

I agree with the other anon, two fabrics is your best best. Choosing the right fabrics here is crucial. You should make sure that both fabrics stretch in the same directions (both two way or both four way stretch) and at roughly the same length. Meaning, you should hold one side of the fabric against the start of a rule and measure out how far it stretches. Don't yank on the fabric, just gently pull them apart as your body naturally would. They need to be at least within half an inch of the same stretch or you're going to run into problems.

The important thing is to move your dremel in the direction it spins, if you try to go against the rotation it'll be very bumpy. I recommend starting with a commercial pattern and making mock-ups. If you have an actual serger, you can get away with only serging the seam, if you're using a regular machine you need to sew the seam. A regular straight stitch won't stretch though, so if you need your seam to stretch pick a stretch stitch (not zig-zag)

Tbh I'd be cautious with adhering rhinestones to ultrapreme. You'd need to add the rhinestones in a way where they won't pop off of the smooth surface of the ultrapreme once the garment is on. Even hotfix rhinestones don't guarantee that they won't come off once the garment is on, especially in areas where there are curves. Adhering rhinestones to a stretch fabric will also make the fabric lose some of its stretchiness because the area under the rhinestones won't be able to stretch, so if you're making something form-fitting, go with mystique spandex.

I'm making the tightrope walker from Haunted Mansion for Halloween and had a few questions I was hoping to get some assistance on.

>The shoulder cape / shrug
I was thinking of cutting out the fabric similarly to how a circle skirt is made, then rounding off the front edges, but after draping a piece of fabric over my shoulders I'm not sure if that would still give it the effect seen in the picture. How should I go about making it? Maybe I could continue with the circle pattern, but add a normal collar with stiff interfacing? Or boning? If so, how should I apply it?

>The bodice
Out of curiosity, what type of fabric does that appear to be in the left photo? I'm using McCall's M7615 pattern for the bodice and the envelope recommends Satin, sateen, tafetta, or velveteen. I originally considered using Simplicity'S8972 pattern which recommends dupioni, shantung, velvet, or faille. I'm still pretty new to fabrics, so any comments or recommendations would be helpful. This is only a halloween costume though, so no need to pull out all of the stops.

>The Arm Puffs
Contrary to the method used in the left image, I was thinking of using a similar method as shown in this video: https://youtu.be/8IJGa2-z3A4, to make the arm bands (except without exposing the elastic channels), but rather than having one solid color for the gathered square like she has, I would be making a horizontal seam so that both colors would be gathered. Will this method achieve that style of poofiness or should I approach it differently?

Thanks in advance for the help!

>capelet thing
Your draping method to get the general shape sounds good but the actual construction would need to consist of two pieces: an interfaced stand collar and the actually draped part of the capelet

>bodice
It looks like some kind of mid to heavy weight cotton. Either pattern should work since all that matters is fabric weight vs. what actual fabric you use. I personally like the shape of the McCall's pattern more.

>arm puffs
I suggest you go with puff sleeves instead since the arm puffs will have a tendency to slip and move around during wear.

I wish I had the time to do this for you, anon, but I'm in full con crunch right now. But hit up Etsy for 'cosplay commission' or search facebook cosplay sale groups. There's plenty of people advertising their comissions, you just have to search for them. Alternatively, go buy some felt at the fabric store, trace your head from the side, then draw the shape of the hood around it at a profile angle. That person's hood has one seam running down the center, so it's very simple and just two pieces. Then they made teardrop shapes out of sandwiched pieces and stuffed those, then hand sewed them on. You could make this yourself if you spend the time on it. Just cut out your test shape out of newspaper or a large piece of shitty fabric and pin or tape it together first, to see if it fits your head.

I've been looking around trying to find some gloves long enough to cosplay pic related. The arms are literally metal, all the way up over the shoulder. I was going to find some medical gloves and spraypaint them, but none go much further past the elbow, especially not at the ridiculous skintightness I want. So then I turned to the latex fetish angle, but even their gloves tend to only be opera length. So I think okay, I can probably cut down a catsuit. But most of them don't cover the damn hands. This https://www.ebay.com/itm/Latex-Rubber-Catsuit-Cool-Corsets-Bodysuit-Tights-Black-Transparent-Size-XS-XXL/382373873473 would probably be perfect otherwise. I'd like it to be transparent so I can try using Mirror Effect spraypaint on the part I cut off. If that looks good I'll need to figure out the best way to protect my skin, but one thing at a time.

I'm trying to decide if it's worth selling an old costume.

I have this sailor Cosmos costume, it's nice but it has damage (see pic). I think it's still better in some ways than a mass produced costume, but it has damage and kind of amateur fixes in some areas (like safety pins holding one area).

I really don't want to throw it out, but I'm not going to wear it again. Do you think it's worth selling local? My local cosplay sales group looks like a trainwreck though. But I'm worried if I go the eBay route whoever gets it will be disappointed. I already sold one half done thing on eBay recently and I'm so nervous about getting a return. I'm really honest in all the pictures but I'm worried it will just be more than someone expects.

at the price to fit my shoe size for a boot that big it would cheaper at that point just to buy AOT boots from a cosplay store, so I got similar gumboots and will gerry rig something together (that's half the fun of cosplay isnt it?) Anyhoo what does one make boot covers out of

Like >>10232050 said though, the gumboots are not similar in the slightest. The thickness, sole, shape, and length are all wrong. Honestly, you picked the shoe furthest from what you should be using. Boot covers aren't just fabric glued onto a pair of existing shoes, they're made on top of them. You use a short ankle length base shoe and then use a fabric (like faux suede in your case) to get the length and design you want and attach using a zipper or velcro. I've seen some people put elastic around the arch, but the boot cover becomes so floppy that it becomes laughably akin to what you'd find in a cheap halloween costume. You should find a pair dress shoes - the shape is more narrow like Erin's.

No, they're really not. Rubber boots will always look like rubber boots and be out of place if the character isn't wearing rubber boots. You should find something made of faux leather, it's probably your best option with your budget. Check thrift stores and secondhand stuff if you want it cheap, you can easily paint them black if they're a different color.

Hey gulls, I'm planning on doing a cosplay of this beautiful bastard right here. I got a couple of dumb questions:
1) Should I go about getting the elements from a cheap store like Aliexpress or should I look into better quality stuff from actual clothing stores? Most of it should be accessable from a regular suit store, aside from maybe the red buttons. I just don't wanna be shelling out for something I don't really need to; ideally there would be somewhere in the middle. Any suggestions would help.
2) I have some mild to medium bad acne, I use facial wash to clean it off and if I apply it it mostly goes away, but I have no idea if it'll end up gone by the time my con is here (November). Should I learn makeup to cover it up, or should I hope for the best from just skincare stuff?
And just so you know, yeah, I'm a dude.

I know this isn't what you asked for but you could make it yourself, except don't make it a functional buckle. Make the outer part look accurate using your material of choice, and then have velcro glued to the back of that so that you just velcro that bitch on and off. IDK if you're able to make a mock up buckle yourself, so my point may be moot, but it is a lot easier to BS details like that when there are exaggerated pieces of hardware which are not for sale anywhere. I personally wouldn't trust a 3D print to hold up with pressure myself. I buy kits all the time and the plastic is so fragile no matter where I buy it from.

For anons that have an airbrush: Do you prefer a siphon feed or gravity feed airbrush? I've been looking at both but I can't decide which is better for my purposes.
I'm mostly looking to do detail work with several colors on small pieces and from what I can tell, a siphon brush will give me the advantage of being able to change colors relatively quickly as well as not having the paint cup in my line of sight. However, it seems as though I'm able to work closer to my piece with a gravity feed brush and the gravity feed needs less air pressure to get the paint through which reduces the chance of spatter.
Is this information right? Which one would you guys recommend?

>> No.10233927

gravity fed is way better for small stuff. if youre doing large stuff you pretty much should go siphon.

I also want to be able to change colors quickly since the pieces I’ll be working on will only require only a minuscule amount of paint but also require multiple colors. Would gravity fed still be better in that case? I appreciate your help, anon.

no, its the specific caveat. that said cleaning out a gravity airbrush doesn't take that long, paper towel to clean the pot and then a bit of water while holding the nib (will cause blow back and bubbling, cleaning out the tubes). unless you're on a super strict deadline it doesn't take that long. for reference most of my work with an airbrush in mini and bust painting, i usually use rattle cans for cosplay (its not a huge hobby of mine comparatively). that said if your good with your paint management or if you want an interesting blend effect, gravity will be able to achieve that while siphons wont really,

If you're lucky, you might be able to find one by searching for "Castiel's coat" from Supernatural. I think it would still only be ankle length, but it's worth a shot. Otherwise, you should look for a pack of curtains in the right color. With that much fabric, it'll run up the cost at your average fabric store. The coat doesn't look extremely structured, so it should be easy enough to add sleeves, buttons, and fold over the hem.

If anyone has any experience here with big platform shoes for larger costumes like robots, what do you do to keep it from falling apart?

I followed some reasonable looking tutorials when i did a recent robot costume, and while it worked just fine in tests, after about 3 hours of con they completely self destructed and all of the glue came undone under the wear and tear of walking around.

Obviously I need to make the next version more sturdy, but I'm not clear on what I did wrong. Any advice?

>> No.10234666

>>10234656

I had an old pair of sneakers that I affixed to big armorfoam blocks using Amazing Goop glue, both being materials that were mentioned by brand name by the tutorial I looked up so I figured it would be fine. I also used goop to attach a thin rubber sheet on the bottom of the foam block for extra grip, and that worked fine.

For a covering for the foot I attached a layer of EVA mat foam and painted it. This didn't hold together as well as I had hoped either, but that was smalltime compared to the shoes 100% detaching from the foam blocks after ~3 hours.

Dressform owners -- I want to buy a dressform for sewing/patterning/display and have questions.
>How much did you spend on yours?
>Purchased locally or bought it online and had it shipped? Where did you buy it (or if you were gifted it, where did it come from)?
>Features to look for in a potential dressform to use for patterning/draping? What would make/break a purchase for you?
>How sturdy is it? (can it handle a few moves to different houses or getting knocked over accidentally? I have cats and they are rowdy)

>>10234742
The items that you're trying to refinish, what are they made out of? Knowing the material (porous/nonporous, intended to flex or stay rigid, etc) will help you choose a finish.

Would it be possible to shape only the dark blue grip portion out of wood? It's not an entire prop, so you'd be able to keep the rest of the bow light with your EVA build, but the grip would be sturdy. You could extend the "legs" of the dark blue portion to slot into the lighter blue wings of the bow.
Alternately, PVC pipe that you heat and shape.

>>10231697
A little like other anon's answer -
>separate the top layer of wig fibers (ie clip them to get them out of the way)
>sew/glue in pieces of black craft foam or felt where you want the cracks to be
>unclip the top layer of wig fibers
>style the wig fibers and freeze their styling so they stay in "chunks" that float over the black-crack areas (like icebergs floating over the sea)

About $130 iirc. It was on sale and I stacked the student discount on top of the sale price.

>Purchased locally or bought it online and had it shipped? Where did you buy it?
Mine is a PGM dress form that I bought straight from their website

>Features to look for in a potential dressform to use for patterning/draping? What would make/break a purchase for you?
If you’re only making things for yourself and your measurements don’t fluctuate much, I think it’s worth buying a dress form that isn’t adjustable. Imo adjustable forms are flimsier and harder to work with than a form that’s solid. Ymmv tho. The thing that I like about having a form from a company that specifically makes dress forms is that you can get a lot of different accessories like arms which will help with draping and allow your dress form to double as a display form.

>How sturdy is it?
Mine’s sturdy enough for me but I’d prefer if it was a little more stable. The form is kind of wobbly but it works fine and I’m not thinking of getting a different form anytime soon.

fingerless evening gloves.

attaching the medalions, just use glue? for paint use a rattlecan, it will get a smoother finish than hand painting. you could buff them after if theyre meant to be glossy or use a sheen coat. Depending on how diy you wanna go could a night gown with with a grey strip down the middle and a hem work
