back when I was a broke young weeb in high school Otakon was a Big Deal. After Big Apple Anime Fest collapsed in 2003 I was finally able to make it down to Baltimore the following year. I don't really watch anime anymore, but I still go every year. I think we've all got some real nostalgia for Baltimore, but let's be honest, DC is better in every way except maybe for price. This shit right here was the fucking worst.

BOYCOTT OTAKON 2019. We can put it out of business in one year. They already embezzled all their savings. Destroy the Ota Cartel. In the ashes of Otakon, a new con will emerge to fill the void. Supply and Demand.

Pass up one Otakon and we can have something better. Let's worry about the future. We can all accept a Katsu or Magfest trip instead this coming year and wait for Otakons spiritual successor afterwards.
The corruption is too deep in Otakon Staff and won't let go. Since almost the entire staff doesn't vote or get involved beyond the con weekend, the cartel has no opposition. We have a choice. Bail them out with attendance and let them carry on or destroy them swiftly here and now.

This, this, a thousand times this.

Will say it as many times as I have to. A lot of the corporate angst and drama is damn near invisible to the attendees. Instead, they see the 800+ staffers who do a pretty good job running "the show" and trying to give the best experience.

Protip: Best close dining options are the food trucks along 17th street, followed by the Japanese-themed food court near the entrance to Artist Alley (because its nearly hidden, staffers jokingly call it "Narnia")

In a perfect world, Otakon's theme for bringing a in City Pop artist (or several) would be to have the entire con go full tilt into the 1980s Japan Aesthetic. Hell, you know how in youtube comments for city pop vids you will see someone say "I wish I was in a Japanese club in the '80s when this song came on" Do that theme for the dance. Replace the "rave" with '80s Japanese music, invite some Vaporwave artists to DJ it. To go even further with the "Bubble Era" theme, put the call out to host a mini car show for 80s-90s JDM cars. This area has plenty of weebs with nice JDM rides.

>Let's all start posting our favorite personal memories from any previous Otakon!!!
I've been going to Otakon since 2005. I still remember the last 4chan panel with moot and snacks in attendance. The line for the panel took up most of the top floor, and was comprised of probably at least 500 retarded wailing banshees regurgitating their favorite memes as loudly as possible. There were staffers using megaphones to direct the line and they occasionally used a button on the megaphone to make a long beeping sound. Everyone in the unruly crowd started mimicking the sound, hundreds of people beeping back each time. "fuck yeah, Seaking!" was the flavor of the month meme then, and it could be heard echoing throughout the entire convention center that night.

The panel itself wasn't memorable... They showed that one super old 4chan flash animation and did a Q&A or something, while the crowd of screaming manchildren in attendance continued to spew out a steady stream of memes to try and get a laugh from their fellow audience. After the panel concluded the energy was still high and the convention center was shutting down for the night. so moot, snacks, and probably 100-200 others (myself included) congregated outside on the sidewalk by the main registration doors and had some impromptu after party. I distinctly remember that at one point, a staffer in a full fursuit came out of the main doors, and they were immediately mobbed by some retards screaming "kill it with fire" who thought it would be lulzworthy. I didn't see it, but apparently someone then kicked the furry in the jewels. The energy almost immediately died down as most sensible people realized that others were starting to go too far... And everyone started to disperse. Police started to show up at some point too. I don't know for sure but I'm about 90% certain that incident was why 4chan panels were banned from otakon afterwards.

Same poster as above. While the 4chan panel and the ensuing chaos was definitely one of my most prominent early memories of otakon, it's dwarfed by the most significant moment in my life. At Otakon 2012, in the karaoke room, I met the most amazing girl. We liked a lot of the same songs, sang some Duets, and went to the concerts together. My favorite memory is of us both singing various anime songs in the street while walking back to her hotel at night. I had never felt such a close connection to someone. I moved to the west coast that year, but kept going to otakon each year just to see her. Eventually we got together and are now married! We have tried to make it to Otakon every year since, but are missing it this year due to expenses.

Are you me?

Otakon is the only anime convention I still attend. My first anime con was BAAF 2001, which was total shit, but that was back when the anime boom was cranking up and I was a full-on weeaboo so I tried to go to every con my broke teen ass could manage in the NYC area. For the weeb crew I ran with Otakon was the fabled 'best' and I finally managed to get there in 2004, when I was 17. I had to miss 2005 because of college but I've been every year since. Those early years were kinda rough- the first year we were six to a room at the Radisson (which I think was the Wyndham back then) and I was wedged between the entertainment center and the wall with no blanket, and didn't sleep a wink the first night.
I still remember the crushing depression I used to get when I got home, but as I developed a routine and made better con friends it got better and better. Unfortunately one of my best buds and one of the few I could count on to go every year passed away shortly after Otakon 2009, but my regular group today includes a guy I met through him, so it's not all bad.

Miss you, Ray.

Yeah a lot of this hits home for me. I started at Nekocon in Hampton Roads around 2001 or so when it used to just be inside a small hotel. I went with a small group of friends and started to go to more conventions, driving further away each time. I had a shitty McJob and mostly funded the con trips with that and writing articles for gaming sites on the side. Pay was 5 an hour and articles were only worth 5-10 bucks a pop, so I was still broke as shit. It was usually enough to get by though if I tried not to spend on "luxuries". Most of the time I wouldn't even get a hotel and would sleep in the car. In retrospect I'm lucky I wasn't carjacked or stabbed, since most of the conventions nearby were in shit holes like Richmond and D.C.

My best friend and I eventually made it to Otakon in 2005, also hearing it was the biggest and best. We stayed in a motel about 10 minutes away in a sketchy area of town, and took the light rail into Baltimore to save money on parking. We were completely blown away by the size of it at the time and had no shortage of things to do. We kept going to Otakon each year thereafter, and would experiment with going to other random conventions at other times of the year. Definitely remember those times fondly, even though I was a dumb weeb fuck (and probably still am)

It's gotten more crowded and more, I guess I'd say, predictable? I blame the internet, in this case- when I started there was a lot less information available about certain things, so you'd always encounter something new and exciting, and you never knew what you'd find in the dealers' room since it was all the comic book stores in driving distance emptying all the 'japanimation' crap they'd had in their backrooms since 1986. It's all gotten a lot more accessible since then which is great in some ways but it also means everything's homogenized and you get clout-chasing nonsense and all the dealers' tables are the same, and ten thousand kids cosplaying whatever the flavor of the month is (fuck thank god it's not homestuck anymore, grey greasepaint everywhere.)

>>10210170
I don't think I ever had it that bad, but man am I glad I'm not a broke fuck anymore. I remember back in those days I always tried to book the cheapest hotel in the official list (never managed a reso at the days inn) but once I hit on the Holiday Inn I did alright. I don't make a lot of money now (white-collar, but I work for a nonprofit) but I can afford to stay wherever I want. I had been booking the Marriott now that it's in DC, but I got fucked by the server errors when hotels went live so this year I'm at the Courtyard.

I wish there were more at-con events that catered to older fans. I've never tried that Hiro's Lounge thing, but I poked my head in once and it looked sad as fuck.

Interesting, this is partially why I don’t really give too much thought to dealers’ rooms. I see people lining up before it’s even open, but all I can think is 90% of the stuff is probably sold some where online. On that same note, I do enjoy the artist alley cause you can run across some neat stuff you didn’t even know existed.
The flavor of the month cosplay is so real though. My friends and I are probably becoming old guard at this point cause we hardly every cosplay anything relevant hahaha.

Current Otakon Staffer here. I legit forgot this guy existed until this picture. I had a problem with him years ago online, where he wrote me on facebook sexually harassing me. I believe his intent was to troll and impress his friends, but none of our members have to endure that behavior at con in person. I can say that any reports about his misconduct will be taken 100% seriously, as well as any attacks on him like the heinous words on this thread. I have a feeling he's fairly harmless and just makes questionable choices to impress others. Just keep the drama out of the con. Thanks.

He will be at Otakon this year for sure. Hes hosting one of the Pokemon photoshoots for Saturday. I personally have a problem with him as well, but that is something I do not wish to address here. Gonna just try and enjoy my favorite con and not deal with problematic people.

On the way out staffer here.

A quick reminder that its poor form to pre-emptively ban someone for stuff in the past (ask a greybeard about "Jabba the Cube")

Harmless or not, if this person is acting up and there are *documented* reports, they will be made gone.

Wanted to point out Otakon is this weekend and the 2019 commercial is STILL not in the official YouTube Channel

Also a quick question: Now that its been proven the Apple Store Carnegie Library's lawn can be used for events--should Otakon bring back the Thursday Matsuri?

Dylan's pretty genuine and he is not stupid. Don't underestimate this person. He draws massive crowds like a Trump rally, and he will turn people against you. Just be a decent person to him, and he won't curse you.

>Just be a decent person to him, and he won't curse you

That just sounds like good advice in general

>> No.10229189

I'm no Dylan supporter, but one time I decided to jump on the bandwagon of accusing him (for no apparent reason at Anime USA 2018) because I was an idiot and impulsive bitch, and I got in a car accident 3 days later. He is soft and mellow in person, but something about him I'm concerned about. Dark stuff.

I don't want to reckon with his forces anymore. I've learned my lesson of not taking advantage of a nice guy who bought me nando's. I wish I could tell him I'm sorry. I really do.

Nah just fat girls everywhere. I'm sure all the thin, hot, dedicated cosplayers will come out Saturday. There is non-binary and trans shit everywhere. Dealer's room is essentially empty. Two booths selling manga. A few selling doujins. Very few selling hentai. Kind of disappointing but with how close in date Anime Expo was this year it's no wonder.

Back in the day, the Dealer's Room used to attract dealers from West of the Mississippi regularly. But the logistics of driving from AX to DC are just too much to overcome.

Speaking of dealer's room, what's the deal with Sundays? I remember way back in the day when I first started going to conventions, Sundays were when all the stuff in the dealer's room would be discounted mainly because nobody wanted to have to pack up all that shit.
Because first impressions are the ones that last, I just believed this to be true.
But do dealers actually do this? I keep going on Sunday to look for deals, but I swear all the shit is the same price. Do these faggots actually LIKE carrying all that shit back to wherever they came from?

I don't know whether to be annoyed at them for not slashing prices, or to whomever fucking told me that's what they do.

You have to remember sempai, we live in an age where anyone can get almost anything otaku-related on Amazon, or possibly eBay, its a global market.

Those dealers have to keep pretty thin margins to entice sellers not to go to Amazon. If it doesn't sell, yes, they pack it up and take it to the next anime con, or put it on eBay/Etsy/etc...

Of course, you can always bundle and haggle and try to get some savings, especially towards closing time when they just want to pack up and GTFO

Please tell your friends how much you loved it on social media, and make plans to attend next year.

If'n you don't mind me asking, where are you from and did you get a room or commute?
