I'm in the chess show this year so I'll by default be there. It sucks that it's supposed to snow this weekend, but I also know people who are chairs of the con and have been going for over a decade so I know that RIT has been giving them little to no help in terms of scheduling and getting reservations for buildings, and if anything actively sabotaging them. Whatever, we've had March Tora-con's before and it all went fine.

I'm curious about how it's gonna go with panels not being in Bamboo and using it for the game room.

Old meme from years ago, they had it out for an autist girl who cosplays there each year. Old judges thought autists couldn't make good cosplays. Also parts of judging turned into popularity contests because gifts - it's why they made a rule against gifts in the last couple years.

Really old judges don't exist anymore so less of an issue now

That's not why it's in March this year. RIT Anime Club wants to go to Anime Boston in April. We all get to freeze again so they can go spend their con-cash next month.

I will say this year's show has a better spread of dialogue and there isn't one character that takes over everything since in a behind-the-scenes aspect the way we write dialogue has changed since previous years. It used to be a one day, "speak up or forever hold your peace" sort of thing that resulted in the most outspoken to pipe up and have most banter dialogue, and if you had no idea what everyone else's idea was, you stayed quiet. Now, it's all done online and ideas are gone over in person instead of just pitched.

I'm friends with the cosplayer in question and have bias because he's one of those people who is just constantly nice and has a large personality, but it's interesting to see what outsiders have to say about him being in larger roles. I'd actually argue that this year, even as king he has a smaller role than in last year's show, so take that how you want?

As for the cringe factor...yeah. No doubt. But I'd argue that's half the fun of the chess shows is how low quality it can be. My prop budget this year was less than $3 and everyone's props are cardboard.

But, yeah! Cosplay Chess show, 11 am in Ingle Auditorium!

I'm mainly going to get BBCock's sig. I'm slowly amassing the full voice cast from the second Tales of Symphonia game - already got JYB, Kyle Hebert, and JB Blanc from previous years. Crossing fingers someday for Heather Hogan tho since she was one of the only two to be in both first and second games.

Also trying to gradually collect names from the original Negima anime, managed to get 9 or 10 of them from Toracon over the years.

I'm not a student at RIT, but I go to Cosplay Troupe meetings. There's also a bunch of alumni and people who aren't in school at all anymore that go to those meetings as well, you just can't be on eboard or be considered a "member." I've never gone to an anime club meeting so I don't know if it's the same, but my friends who also go to other schools will go to their meetings sometimes, but they also live on campus and used to go to RIT.

I do something similar; I go to RWAG meetings every Tuesday night, and I’ve never been a student. At this point I probably know the campus better than most students do just from years of going to Tora-Con and RWAG.

Usually no, but sometimes those are unavoidable. There really ours nothing worse than sitting in a panel for ten minutes waiting for the host to struggle thru dry reading a power point because they can't get over their stage fright. You can generally tell the quality of the panelist by their first three minutes interaction with the audience.
