Welcome to the world of JSKs, you have the option of wearing a blouse or cardigan. You can match to the dress or match to the print. I've seen the yellow and pink colorways of honeycake coordinated with blue, I see the ivory colorway worn with brown pretty often. Shockingly its easier to find a cardigan in red than it is brown or yellow so thats probably why red cardigans get worn with it a lot.

And again, I'd like to see these mythical prints being worn in ways besides a blouse or cardigan in ways that somehow honeycake is incapable of being worn.

That's what I was thinking felt off about this coord. It just feels too inorganic; the wig is too perfect, the poof is too perfect- it's like they found an oldschool checklist and just went down the list. Objectively, it's a good coord (minus the yikes makeup and setting), but it just doesn't give me that feeling that oldschool does when it's worn by someone that just legitimately likes the style.

lolita requires a great deal of creativity as opposed to cookie cutter looks. If you think venturing outside of the one coord you're used to "Looks bad" then you are probably not very open minded. You're both right- I have a blood chemical disorder that causes severe water retention. It really blows, but I live with it. My weight/size can fluctuate pretty hard depending on the day with the most severe case hitting about a year ago- my waist went from 70cm to 84 over the course of three days and it was extremely painful. It took about two weeks to go back down all the way but generally the fluctuations hit by the week and range anywhere from 2-5cm changes in any given area.

The dress wasn't tight at all, though; just kinda makes a boob bag because of the cut, but those shoes admittedly make my calves look big. I wear them for comfort reasons.

Hello there everyone!
Last Sunday I was invited to be a judge in a Lolita contest for the first time! It was in the Maid Cafe Day that Chest of Wonders, a group that recreate the experience of Maid cafes in the conventions here, organized! It was "Neko Party" themed so I used it as a chance to make a different outfit
Lost in the Sea is my dreamdress so I try to use as much as I can. And in such a hot weather as Brazil has it's great to have a jsk that I can use without a blouse!
Mainly I have being using it like this, so I would love to hear some suggestions to coordinate it in new ways

It’s like they’re trying to coord sweet like it’s classic. The shoes are ugly and look normie, the tights don’t even go colour wise, and the underskirt looks out of place, it barely seems to add any length anyway so I don’t see why she bothered. Just wear bloomers.

Hi I’m the girl in the photo, I look at these threads for crit pretty often, I try really hard with coording,I think I’m ok at color balance, and I try to be creative but they are just never anything special, I guess it might have to do with how much I wear it (like 3-4 days a week)? It's because they want to look *exactly* the same as the people in Fruits did in the 90's.
And I'll be honest, some of them really nail the look.
Their approach of studying those pictures (not sure all of them do it, but I know at least one of them does) and recreating it doesn't seem like a bad idea but it's a little obsessive?
And that does make it feel like it's almost a cosplay I guess.

I think it's pretty ironic, since the girls they try to copy so hard did the opposite. They experimented with fashion and just wore stuff they really loved and that expressed theirself to the truest form instead of trying hard to copy someone else. I think you guys miss the point of what any of these people are trying to do. It comes off to me like they're trying to keep an era alive and are actually attempting to recreate the style, not the exact look. There's something familiar and warm about street snaps and old adverts from glb and kera magazines, or at least to me there is. To them, it's something that probably makes them really happy and they probably spend time making these nods to old lolita shots because they really respect it. When I see them all interacting it's all very sweet, and I think they're just some nerds who really like that style of shoot and clothing.

I mean everything has an influencing point, even you become influenced by certain lolitas and I'm sure you both try to imitate a style you like when you see it, or at least draw some inspiration. I've seen people mention this before but there are only so many coords you can create, especially old school ones, and doing it in modern day is going to present much differently

I think your colour balancing needs some work, honestly. I feel like you're overdoing the pink, and a white blouse and socks would be better. Then keeping the pink bow and the pink jewellery would be fine. The underskirt, socks, and accessories you're wearing all look very cheap, which brings the outfit down a lot for me. The hairbows for example look like plain ribbons. melonDOLL sells really nice ribbon accessories and I think you should check them out. While your dresses are nice, I think the main problem is that you cheap out a little bit on key accessories, and you take your pictures in poor lighting (if that's the cause of the "dirty" feeling on your photos). Also you should consider trying some makeup out, looks like you don't wear any, even simple eyeliner might help. That all being said, you're very pretty, and you have very nice hair, so you can deffo be great by virtue of cuteness. I hope this advice helps a bit.

I think you should always try to invest in accessories before dresses. You can have a nice dress, but if everything you have doesn't come together well, it won't look great. So like you said, just focus on accessories, socks, jewellery for a while. Your dress count is already pretty big. I also think you posted in the draw thread, right? While I think the outfit is cute, there's definitely a feeling of uncleanliness in your clothes. Do you shop second hand mostly? I think you should invest time into studying how to properly clean your pieces, including your shoes. There's a couple scanned gothic lolita bible pages which go over cleaning.
The makeup thing is mostly not a big deal. I usually don't wear it, either. Plus you have a pretty face naturally. Again, I hope this helps. You're certainly not "ita" by any standard and you're doing pretty good so far. I think you'll simply get better with time, with or without advice.

I could see that. I like the old school resurgence to an extent, I think most old school coordinates aren't trying to be edgy. But I understand that there's now this edgy, argumentative new-old-school group coming up who come off as unimaginative and yet really vocal. I don't mind copying, but I think when someone blatantly copies & is also very elitist, it's an attitude that really lacks self awareness. Rejecting criticism while also forcing yourself into a community which is built around critique and group-growth is very weird too. I think that's the problem with these people- I like Ophelia's outfits but her attitude lingers for a lot of people, and there's nothing wrong with not liking her for that.
That being said, I really don't like when people say "now Ophelia is dead" or something whenever someone posts a nice old school coordinate. I feel like that mentality makes old-school indistinguishable from Ophelia. No style should be defined by one single person, especially not old school.

it's not as genuine as this though. people came out on weekends to get photographed by street fashion photographers, in addition to the community aspect of hanging around in the square with other fashion lovers. I think the presence of magazines and journalists influenced folks to be as creative and different as possible, as to get noticed.
the thing we have to be aware of is that the old school era is over. old school as a substyle is different from other substyles because it is historical fashion. you can get creative with it, for sure, and even do handmade, but old school has certain irremovable parameters.
you can't do wa-lolita without any integration of traditional Japanese styling, motifs, or garments mixed in.
I think we're being too hard on old schoolers throwing criticisms like "this looks/feels like cosplay" at them. every coord will be inspired by something that has already been done.
I actually think exact copies of coords in old snaps, if ever actually achieved, are hella admirable, since the chance of acquiring yet-surviving pieces decreases every day that goes by.
of the currently most visible old schoolers I have not seen exact copies, because I think we're all generally discouraged from recreating snaps to a T.
I personally don't think there's anything wrong with copying coords in snaps, or similarly wanting to recreate a coord you've seen on a model in a catalog.

It's so funny to hear people say old school seems like cosplaying, because modern lolita looks pretty costumey and cosplayish as well. That's actually one reason I'm into old school over modern lolita. It seems much more like a weird costume to me, instead of that quirky, fun, street fashion I fell in love with in 2000.

It’s not about how it looks, it’s the approach to the style. The meticulous copycatting of old streetsnaps, the stressing over what’s “real” old school and what’s not (all while still wearing heavy modern makeup and lenses, funny how that’s the one thing they won’t give up...) that makes it seem more like cosplay than a lolita picking her outfit for the day.
