/k/ here, drove by to get a look at things.

Have some questions

* How are the anti-ghosting measures working out so far?

* Saw cosplayers walking from the MGM, really? There's no shuttle?

* Does anyone stay at the cheap motels in Alexandria and drive across the river?

* Why is traffic management such shit this year? Yeah, part of it is the Big Apple Circus but it just seems the traffic flow was bunged up and local law enforcement was in IDGAF mode.

* Whats the best place to eat and people watch?

>con is probably more crowded that it’s ever been
What fucking sorcery is this? There’s really nowhere you can stop to take photos anymore because there’s heavy foot traffic everywhere. The fountains have huge cosplay meetups/photo shoots that take up pretty much the whole space. Third floor has the space around the gazebo closed off, the whole floor is effectively non stop foot traffic to get from one side to the other. Every other part of the convention center that has good lighting has constant foot traffic. Please tell me I’m not going crazy but I don’t think it’s ever been this bad before.

Anti-ghost stuff is probably working pretty well. There have been a few points at which I ended up getting past a staffer with no badge check, but it's hard to believe that someone could evade ALL of them.

Nothing on the MGM because I drive from home to Katsu.

I definitely know people who do. It seems to me that more people have done so with the advent of Uber/Lyft. However, being at the Gaylord for parties' sake still seems to be a draw to National Harbor hotels proper.

No idea on the last 2.

They have most entrance/exit points covered. However there's still one unguarded entrance point that'll pretty much give you access to the main con space. >Has Otakon gotten settled in to their new venue yet?
Mostly. They need to man additional entrances for bag check at peak periods, and if they're going to schedule official meetups they need to not put the popular ones in tiny spaces.

>How is the venue for photography?
Nothing special -- lots of windows and light, but ugly carpet and walls. The Marriott Marquis (connected by tunnel) and the church across the street are nice, though, and you have all of DC around for nice photos. Someone said that City Center banned cosplayers, which is a shame because it's cute and nearby.

>Are there any areas people congregate for photos like the fountain and the gazebo at the Gaylord?
The second-floor bridge between the north and south parts of the convention center, I suppose. It's bright.

It depends when you went to AwesomeCon. Otakon had 24,894 in 2017 and 26,590 in 2018. Meanwhile, AwesomeCon had 7,000 in its first year, but I'm seeing sites claim that it hit 50,000 or 70,000 in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

Having been to AwesomeCon in 2017 (and to Otakon 2017 and 2018), I think AwesomeCon's numbers may be overstated, but it definitely used parts of the con center that Otakon doesn't, so I believe that AwesomeCon is at least as big if not substantially bigger.

There are definitely more cosplayers at Otakon, though.

The national cherry blossom festival is a month long event. You’re thinking about the parade and street festival which are one day events that occur within the festival. You can easily squeeze in a convention during that time frame.

No. I mean it could be done, but Sakura Matsuri is already pretty crowded with other members of the public and Katsucon is the same with attendees. I don’t see people willing to leave an expensive con like Katsucon to go into downtown DC to pay an extra $10 to see the already overcrowded festival.

I would keep those events separate.

As far as the trees are concerned katsucon attendees can’t even treat a nice venue properly. I wouldn’t want to see the damage done to the trees.

The time of year that the cherry blossoms bloom varies a lot from year to year, and peak bloom is a short window. You couldn’t plan a con around it.

Remember, too, that you're your own harshest critic. In particular, any editing you do to salvage will be less obvious to everyone else because they didn't spend forever painfully staring at the raws.

But yeah, live and learn. I did most of my editing last night and wish I could almost every shot... a gazebo shoot was the most painful, it should have turned out so much better but I didn't adjust to the lighting very well. I'm not going to get anywhere if I dont step out of my comfort zone. I would love to make a disclaimer that I'm completely unconfident in my abilities but that would be extremely off putting.
This was a huge learning experience and shooting in such a packed space really opened my eyes to a lot of things that I need to work on like really drilling in my head that I really need to start understanding poses & angles, being able to direct people better, planning out a hell of a lot more pre-planned poses/compositions especially in case someone doesn't want to go to the location I had in mind, etc.

>I'm not going to get anywhere if I dont step out of my comfort zone.
You step out of you comfort zone on your own time. Not when you're working with other people. Specially if you don't give them a heads up about your skill level and they're expecting you to deliver something that you can't give them.

>but that would be extremely off putting.
Working with someone who's inexperienced IS off putting in it of itself. But you should be upfront about it and let those people decide if they still want to work with you or not.

Nah, photographer did nothing wrong. They were free shoots, it's not like he's getting paid money and then delivering an inferior product. If he'd actually charged them something it'd be different, but he didn't, I assume because he was very well aware that he might mess it up and he wouldn't feel comfortable taking people's money without the experience to back it up.

Also, iirc they had one in the Artist Alley and another photosuite in the hallway connecting the hotel and convention center??? No con needs 2 photosuites! I missed a lot of tables because I was literally sandwiched between people, especially in the last row closest to the exit.

I concur, the photo shoot areas took up way too much space. The one by the upper hallways junction eliminated a nice sitting area I've always enjoyed. The one in the AA could certainly have been downsized, if not shifted to some smaller room off to the side, or perhaps along a hallway somewhere else. They always allocate those guys a shitload of space that gets unused.

>I have a full frame Nikon.
>35mm to 85mm with a similarly wide aperture?
The options are the 24-70mm f2.8 for zoom. 70mm at f2.8 you will get blur.
Your best option Nikon 105mm f1.4 for the best in weight and size and blur the background for full frame camera.
Sigma 105mm f1.4 is the better option with the trade off weight. Price and performance is better.
The next option is the 85mm f1.4 nikon or the Sigma 85mm f1.4.
Get the Peak design lens kit for nikon F mount and carry a 35mm and the 85mm primes. Swapping lenses is fast. I do this with the sony FE lenses and its easy.

From my time at katsucon I leverage the 35mm f1.4 the most as the space was tight. Still get head shot blur and not much distortion.
If I were to go back I would bring only the 24mm f1.4 GM and the Zeiss/sigma 50mm f1.4 for Sony FE.

Yeah, those tables were always a great place to sit down and I'd see people even play board games there. By getting rid of that space it makes it more crowded because if people needed to sit, they'd just plop their groups asses on the floor. I am personally not a fan of photosuites, especially in such a photogenic location, so I'm biased but there HAS to be a better spot.
