I have a rivalry with calimacil and epic armory. One does great blades but flimsy guards while the other does vice versa.

Don't buy surplus in miserable shape that you can't easily fix. I've had to give up several projects because its in such a sorry shape that I can't make it usable again without breaking it.

- If its drenched in moth repellant then I will drench it in the hottest water my tap can produce along with washing machine powder and the scrub the fuck out of it.
- Helmets and similar hardware will be scrubbed in hot water and immediately dried with a piece of cloth to minimize rusting. Leather straps are left to dry for a bit before being treated in grease.

You could drown it in a tub of hot water that has a dishwasher tablet mixed in it and let it fry for half an hour. But that could damage the leather.

Though in my opinion you should have accepted the state of surplus that you get for 9,99€ of Polish quality.

Another update: I just finished putting in the metal eyelets (wrong, I know) and the top fabric. I'm almost ready to put the zip ties in and sew the bias tape around the edges. Then the straps go on. My rabbit chewed my planned cord for the spiral lacing so I have to buy something else.

I do plan to sew over the metal eyelets so it at least looks right. I was thinking of doing it with ribbon to make the eyelets look like roses?

it's not a must have but sometimes, especially if you want to lace it tight and there is a lot of force on the eyelets it could fuck up a little of the look. Like the fabric is pulled way more at the point of the eyelets then between them.
So some people put a long piece of leather or some other half-rigid material on the line of the eyelets, under them (and obviously covered by the fabric) this way the pull from the lace will be more even

>> No.10108038

>>10107953
I'm not sure about historical accuracy but if you have boning on both sides of the eyelets it should be reasonably supportive and help prevent warping from pressure on the eyelets, unless your zip ties are particularly flexible or the boning channels are too loose. Stays aren't usually particularly under pressure though compared to, say, a tightlacing corset, so I imagine you won't have too much trouble with that regardless.

what kind of leather - real or fake, soft or hard? is your embroidery some kind of premade patch or are you stitching it in yourself? (bonus - if it's cosplay, why are you asking these things on the larp thread instead of somewhere like stupid questions thread?)
if it's a premade patch like you seem to be making it sound, your options are either sewing or gluing with something more hardcore than a fucking glue stick. do note that if opting for gluing, it will always look like shit and fall apart fast.

have you considered neodymium magnets? make the embroidery on some patch of whatever, maybe a little peice of leather that has the same color than your jacket, put a thin metal piece on the backside of it an inside your jacket put a strong but small neodymium magnet. If you pick one that is strong enough it will surely hold it there and afterward you can remove it from the jacket without leaving a mark.
Probably there are other methods but that's what comes to my mind first

That's tough. Do you need it for play only, or do you need a perfectly wind- and waterproof tent for sleeping in?

If the former, making your own becomes a serious possibility. I'm no expert, but a fairly large A-frame tent seems to be a realistic larger-scale hobby project.

Second-hand buying is always an option, but only ever do that if you can inspect the tent yourself beforehand. Buying a new tent large enough to seat seven people is probably not going to be possible within your budget, but there might be someone in your local circle that's willing to make one for less than what professional stores charge.

There's always the ubiquitous Sahara tent, but it's not the best-looking of tents. If you're able to find something better, do so. If you're going to sleep in it, buy the Deluxe edition. It's a bit uglier, but the fact that it's actually properly resistant to wind and rain more than makes up for it.

In my experience small canvas tents trap a lot of moisture inside. If you get a bigger tent you can always fit a gas burner inside to remove both cold and dampness if needed.

And no, if the temperature outside goes below 0C then you can burn as many candles as you can fit inside a small tent but it will still be freezing. Better to buy a proper arctic sleeping bag at that point.

technically you can use it on bare skin. I did it, you can survive it. But that said at least one layer of anything will make you more comfortable (also it will rust like hell if it is in direct contact with your sweat) so very thin layers of whatevers will be stained as fuck, but that's life.
Some people are like you have to get the thickest gambeson ever under it until you look like a Michelin figure but they are just way too worried that something might touch them.
On the other hand you can put over the mail anything you want even gambesons.
On pic is how a form fitted chainmail looks like and you can deduce that the undergarment isn't extremely thick.

On the subject of tents, I've been spoiled by mountaineer wall tents since i was young. They give a lot of space, practically weatherproof, and if it's cold you start a fire in the stove. I haven't been to a big event but I wonder of anyone would make a stink about a single tent being not as period as the rest. Odds are no one would give a fuck since modern tents are also used but segregated to out of the roleplay area.

Yeah, that's basically it. I'm gonna stick to dedicated larping websites from now on.

I asked because I went to the game 0 of Dammerung and wanted to see what others thought of it.

I've been to Dystopia Rising and it was a confusing mishmash of what the fuck am I doing here? Like if you did not go with a group of friends you're fucked.

Dammerung pretty much forces you to join in on events and things, it encourages better RP, and it sticks you with your faction and allows you to develop with them. It seriously is a blessing on the USA scene and I will support it as much as I can. The combat actually feels combat-y and it's the first larp I didn't use a dumb duct tape dildo boffer in either.

My character is an ex-thief Cernish ranger. I would do archery more but... I had no archery stuff of my own and am scared of losing someone else's arrows. I mainly use the shortsword, which is 27" but I'd rather something longer for frontline fighting but I guess I could borrow something lol.

Also that steampunk larp looks like a party

A quick googling just directs me to "good posture will reduce fatigue and improve weightloss" or "your posture will improve if you have a diet that results in weightloss, since excessive weight will degrade your posture" etc.

I'm not fat, I consume veggies and fruit on a daily basis, water will get chunked, during work days I typically land at around 15000 to 20000 steps a day. I do eat junk food and drink soda when I feel like it but its not americany excessive. My neck posture is just a result of me playing to much wow on a crappy chair during my teen years.

Not the the ideal pic, also old, but you can notice that I still have a slight "haunching" even when I am straightening up my posture for a picture.

I am working on improving it passively by recognizing whenever I slouch to much and straightening up as much as I can. Ok, i cant tell you what to do but i really think that you waste this cool buckler then. I just dislike black leather.

But if you want to do it, im guessing that the leather is "sealed"(sorry don't know the proper english word). If you paint it whith acrylics and put a flexible top coat on, if you have it even clear latex, im 99% sure that it will hold. But you maybe will get a uneven result while painting, so my tipp is that you use a lot of thin coats, like at least 10. You could als do one thick one but do that at your own risk. Thanks but its actually a rather crappy kit. Lots of cotton articles from mytholon, cheap zinked chain mail shirt that doesn't match my darkened helmet. I'm quite good at making shields though and I've gotten some good rep for my shields, but it doesn't lift up the general quality of that kit.

>And if you end up buying plate, don't buy a bunch of cheap shit that looks like shit

Its gonna be budget though since its for larping. You get more costume points for having a decent handmade wool jacket underneath, and that is what I intend to do. Just gonna get some basic plate chest that is sort of historically accurate and neutral in design so that I can grab some hp points at casual larp campaigns and mix it with several different character designs.
What I had in mind: https://www.epicarmoury.com/metal-works/breastplates/milanese-armour-polished-steel-l/c-290/p-23633/?os=1
I was considering stahlgilde at first but I don't want to deal with ukraine postal services again for such a small order.

I plan on getting a full plate set in the future that is custom made to my measures and design taste, but that will be used for reenactment and such. Currently dreaming about the KA 6.3 kit on http://www.bestarmour.com/armour_6.html
I don't want to use an expensive armor at casual larps where it might get stolen while I shit or have unnecessary wear, while at the same time being at a disadvantage due to foam dick swords favoring light equipment.

I would but one campaign that I attend require that chest armor have front and back plates if they are to yield any hp. Its a 50/50 on costume aesthetics and game practicality for me, I don't want to go around looking like a professional foot soldier while statistically I'm just canon fodder.

Good recommendation though.

>>10114830
Depends on the rules of the campaign, but most times its just heavy infantry in center forming a shield wall or pike wall, and light infantry on flanks. In larger battles you can see people with spears/halberds/pikes or bows support the shield wall at the front.

Most advanced strategy I've seen involves unit maneuvers though, not formations.

New stuff tends to come drenched to preserve the steel in transit/storage. Taking off the majority's a wise idea so as not to ruin your undergarments.

There's no harm in spraying on some oil or grease before you box it up between larps, though regular wearing of mail and the movement of the rings will remove most surface rust.

If you want more rage fuel

>leather armor gives one hp, as long as it has a front and back piece
>gambeson does nothing
>full body plate armor needs special review from gm for it to give more than one hp
>chain mail hauberk that covers 2/3 of your body will only ever give you one hp, even if combined with a thick gambeson underneath

And despite that, its the best larp around these parts. Organisers keep things straight and simple to avoid complications, thus allowing them for a broader rule set, and they do the same with handling players. Power larpers hate that campaign since they cant bend on the rules or get their op characters approved.

So I saw a pic from a European (not sure of specific country) LARPer who had a pack like this.

I figure that fact it's vintage and made from fur and leather makes it "semi" accurate for a historical backpack.

After mine comes in from ordering it, what are some misc. items I could put in it?

Too late now, but in general when ordering vintage stuff: don't buy it unless you've seen it from all sides. Sellers sometimes conveniently neglect to mention that there are zippers on it.

As for filling your bag: a coin purse is always useful, and pencils/pens/feathers & paper always come in handy at random times. I personally carry a small sewing kit at all times on Drachenfest, because walking back to your tent for repairs isn't always feasible there. Lastly, if you have any medical experience and room to spare, bringing an OoC first aid kit is a sound idea.

Organisers did a lot of reforms a couple of years back, very little about the armor rules though, but their policy is basically "no more changes" since it takes away focus from the game and creates a lot of drama no matter if its a good or a "no fun allowed" change.

Prepare for the drama though.

Remaking a system typically creates a bunch of controversy since there is always a number of people who benefit greatly from an old system, particularly larps with spell systems since they attract snowflakes with no life except for that one time of the year where they get to pretend to be gandalf.

We had maybe a 100 people or so that left because their characters weren't invincible or über anymore over night, even the guys who got to keep their magical experience and choose new traits/spells in the new system got butthurt. Its understandable that some people would get upset since this campaign has been running for over 25 years, but for the better part it was npc characters or player characters that abused the system who got permanently axed, not the guys who have been going for ten years and reached the top level in their magical line. On the other hand I do think it was kinda childish to just leave, spells don't make a huge difference in the game mechanics since 90% are supportive in nature (ex: dark magicians start out with "interrogate dead", then they can raise like one zombie out of a dead player after like 7-8 years of attendance. Light magicians do stuff like "fear ward", buffs that counter dark magic mostly, and I think their final spell that they can attain is "resurrect" but don't quote me on that one), you mainly just want the role playing privilege of saying that you are a mighty wizard and attend rituals and some other prestigious shit.

Though this shitfest wasn't even comparable to the shield nerf they had eight years ago..

>> No.10119037

>>10118977
Well that's the thing, players are getting MORE options, the real overhaul is that we are getting rid of elemental proof items. The old system stated that if you are fire-proof, all fire abilities and effects were ineffective against you. Easy right? but the way mages work is that you are committed to an element. So if I get a fireproof ring, i now can kill any fire mage with ease. It took them so long to realize that was why no one was a mage.
New system instead makes it so the "defining trait of each element" is what you are immune to. Fire's trait is most of the spells make the target drop their weapon or take damage (by way of heating the weapon). So being fireproof now means fire spells dont make you drop weapons. There are true fire based damage spells that you would still have to watch out for.
I hope it turns out ok, the head admin is personally looking at each character's stuff and adjusting it for the system.
No one really is invincible persay but we did throttle back on health rings and armor stacking.

>health rings and armor stacking.

I think hp buffs are cancer if it isn't a racial trait or armor related. It breaks immersion significantly for me personally, or is it a good functioning mechanic in that campaign?

>>10119039
Not as interesting as the mage nerf but it had a bigger impact.

>outside of safety regulations, there were no rules or guidelines for shields in the rulebook
>people would make kite shields as tall as they were and twice as wide, someone even made a round shield that was 175cm diameter
>hedgehog formations were invincible
>stalemates would end in brawls after some guy decided to tackle the issue head on (literally)
>final straw for the organizers was this one fine spring day when a faggot dressed in shields showed up at the check in

So they only allow shields to be 100cm tall after that. People got mad for real and my personal estimate is that up to 400 people quit the campaign as a result, which is quite a lot for a game that had at the times up to 1000 active players. Along with the mage quelling, and lack of new recruitment due to reputation impacts, the campaign is down to ~300 active players today with an attendance number of about 200.

I think the campaign is better today, there are no power larpers left to shit things up and combat is more dynamic without those cheese strategies.

Haven't been to drachenfest and the like but I guess that the organizers at larger events are more "walled off" when it comes to player interactions. I made these hefty leather bracers for a costume, but even with a cloth undershirt and chainmail to help fill out my noodlearms I'm still worried they are going to slide. The inside of each has a buffer of EVA foam to help pad the piece.

Short of running jackchains down the arms, does anyone have any experience with this kind of problem that might help me?

what are some good ways of developing the debate between different fighting styles as a player

one of my favorite tropes in fantasy is the debate or competition between fighting styles, wether they are realistic (Meyer fencers vs Fiore fencers) or fantasy (fighting styles in game of thrones)

I can probably make up fighting styles that are based on simple principles (one plays with reach and staying away from your enemies, other is all about perfect defense etc)

what is the best way to spread it out and get more players roll with it?

start the debate in a tavern. Disagree exclusively on very minor points and agree on basically everything else.
Like, you should disagree on WHY a very specific and rarely used stance should be called after an uncommon animal and how it resembles that stance and ONE, again, very specific attack you do from it.

I think another good thing to do is to tak to your friends who are into this as well, and get them to come up with their own defined fighting styles so it actually feels more like a LARP-wide trait and not just your own thing. Might get others to make up their own styles as well for the next game. Of course, you should be vocal about it and all that jazz.

For out of game I've been running shit and doing admin stuff and that was mostly because my character was in prison for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Nearly took the fall for the slaughtering of a families estate. While I wanted to get back into fighting shape, when I was in character I was effectively in chains and forced to roleplay. Which turned into a lot of idle threats to guards and noblemen and really hyped up my ranger as a badass, especially when he's a war veteran.
The charges get dropped due to lack of evidence and 6 months later I get released out the front gate of the keep and told dont cause trouble. Now my Ranger up to this point had made a point to keep certain parties thinking he was dead. Appearing in court tends to fuck that up. So when I was released out the keep gate, I had an entourage of people I had either stiffed debts, pissed off or attempted to screw over in other ways.
Felt like the last episode of Seinfeld.
Now being cocky since I had hyped myself up during the roleplaying, I took all challengers right on the front steps into the keep. This is where I fucked up hard.
First challenger wipes the floor with me. I was really out of practice since the last 3 events I had been too busy running stuff to spar, or I was in chains. I got blown out to the point that the guards decided to break it up since common law is that I'm not out the Keep's care until I enter another residence and it would look bad if someone gets released from prison and immediately gets killed (Honestly I think it was because of how bad I got thrashed and because none of the npcs running it wanted to see me die within 5 minutes of getting out of jail.) The guards held me for the rest of the day while a healer worked me over and then released me off a supply wagon a couple miles out of town.
I thought I was hot shit but i wasn't. I lost a lot of face and now I'm back to the wilds hunting. Next event I'm doing less running quests and more sparring.

You're trying to make something designed to be worn in a particular fashion work in a way they are not designed for. The guy in your pic dressed as Zero is using costume pieces made to fit, rather than trying to tard-rig fitted pieces.

>>10128142
Long story short, in the end, viable fighting styles end up being comparable due to the simple fact that the mechanical actions of the human body can only do so much (pic related). I highly suggest you go on to youtube and see if you can find the interview/documentary on the making of witcher 3, where they use a professional HEMA instructor/Dancer to develop the animotion captures for Geralt, and the balance between functional realism and fantasy. There is a reason that you don't see that much twirly BS in real combat.

You also have to understand that you are looking at both medieval images drawn second hand by someone who doesn't have an exact knowledge of fencing, and highly ritualized Japanese sport.

The point is, the body mechanics are generally the same, and furthermore Japanese swordsmanship and swords is shit anyways. Even the Japanese agree with me on that: before the modern fetishization of the cult of the sword in Japan, calling a Japanese warrior a good fencer was an insult to their skills as a horseback archer.

That is grossly inaccurate. Even in early sources like the Heike Monogatari, when mounted archery was in its heyday, they would still note that so and so was excellent with bow and sword. By the end of the Sengoku being an expert swordsman was a badge of honor.

And both Chinese and Europeans alike considered the level of swordsmen in Japan very high.

>The point is, the body mechanics are generally the same,

I can't see how anyone who has attended a few kendo classes and done Hema could say this. the footwork, the cut, I dare say the power generation are nothing alike.

I'm a 4th dan Kendoka, I do HEMA, and I used to dabble in kenjutsu. I'll completely agree with clownfag on this. The body mechanics are the same, with only slightly variation. if you compare enough of any martial arts to a similar form, you will find that they can all be rendered to basic physical principles. The human body only moves in so many ways.

>> No.10129615

>>10129594

I can see where you are coming from, so I will explain my position in more detail.

Of course there are similarities, the power should be generated with the lower body, not the shoulders, but look at the "cut" in hema and kendo. Fiore for instance says to cut from the teeth to the knee. Kendo on the other hand uses an outstretched cut, more of a strike really, which in solo practice tends to stop at about the chest or throat level. Every kenjutsu school is different, some cut like hema, others like kendo, and some like none of the above.

Anohter things is the use of the feed. Very few use the type of footwork kendo uses, which influences how kendoka should generate power, with there hip forcing power through the back leg, both propelling them forward and powering the cut. Its a rather idiosyncratic motion rarely seen outside kendo. The sliding footwork also requires a lot of getting used to if you are used to passing step. Its also very different from the lunges used in sabre and rapier. In kendo the hip is usually kept facing the opponent, rather than hanmi. While some arts generate power with a noticeable twisting of the hips, this is not usually possible in kendo, so they have to be utilized in other ways, such as compression and release.

Now you might say I am cherry picking, but if you do some of these things in an art where they don't do them, the teacher will often directly tell you it is wrong and expect you to correct yourself. To me, that means they are different.

>> No.10129623

>>10129620
Because you're too daft to understand that kendo is a sport with heavily abstracted rules and techniques that were once based off of kenjutsu. If you try doing a kendo men cut with a real sword against tatami you won't do anything close to what someone focused on a actual cutting motion like a kenjutsu or iado practitioner can do. Also the stance and footwork is far more rigid than you would actually use in a real fight.

It's like the abstractions that are put into place in Olympic fencing compared to historical fencing. same basic premise, but the rules put in place are done purely out of sport.

Subtle differences are important, at least if you are studying anything formalized. There can be a lot of crossover, sure and if that is all your really interested in examine I guess that is fine, but I prefer to focus on what makes things different because I think it can give greater insight.

But still if we are comparing hema and Japanese sword arts than I don't think kendo is the place to start. Better to look at older styles or maybe world war 2 military sword stuff like batto.

the problem is while the stances are somehow similar the context, the weapons, the intent and all that jazz is different. comparing just stances doesn't get you closer how two martial art system works, just how similar their stances.

What we're talking about is the body mechanics the limits of the human body. In the end, it doesn't matter if you're using Fiore, kenjutsu, gatka, gung-fu or whatever, the body mechanics will end up being the same because you are still a human being.

>> No.10129658

>>10129656
yes but there will be parts of it that some thing uses and some aren't depending on your purpose, context, weapon etc
Because OBVIOUSLY you will have to move your arms and legs and it's only finite way to move it and yet there are a shitton of differences like where do you target how big of the arcs, do you want to bind or not, are you more into thrusts or cuts or just hitting the other guy, is it an armoured fencing or without it, is it for warfare or just duels or something else.
The list goes on.

So as I said you can compare the abstracts, but the specifics will have enough differences that you can look at two fighters and you could tell that one is doing martial art X and the other is doing Y.

The real question is where do you draw the line for the abstractions, but that's already in the fields of martial arts theory

that would imply that the mechanics are completely same, but in reality they aren't.

So again: yes, the human body can move in a finite way. But no martial arts uses all sets of those movements. They use a subset of movements that fits the purpose of the martial arts in the given context. Thats where the differences come from and make them even mechanically different although sometimes similar to varying degrees.

Okay lads, I've got a question here: are there any 17th century LARPs in Europe that allow fencing with steel, HEMA-style? I'm a HEMA rapierist and I would really like this sort of thing (I realize that masks and gorgets would be absolutely required but the gorgets could easily be hidden in costume or even visible in the form of an officer's gorget; I'd be willing to simply put up witht he mask which I don't see as more offputting than boffers).

Even a boffer-based one would be of interest as long as the boffers were thrust-safe.

Maybe it's a UK larp culture thing, but the majority of larps I've been to are very loud about recommending indie makers like the ones I listed and massively dissuading people from supporting the mass produced stuff. One of the country's biggest events (Empire) is almost like a con for these makers to sell their stuff, and a lot of Calamacil stuff especially doesn't pass weapons checks at the big larps. Club larps like at universities often have armouries too where noobs can try weapons by many different makers, the most mainstream weapons in the club I started at were Medlock and 90% were Eldritch, Saxon Violence, or other smaller makers.

Calimacil is great for when you need a larger quantity of low-maintenance weapons, like when outfitting NPC crews.

Epic Armoury is great for distinct-looking yet cheap weapons for when you want to invest your costume budget into more important things.

Furthermore, such mass-produced arsenals are ideal for starting larpers, who need something generic. They don't have any idea what kind of custom item they want, nor the time to wait for one. Sure, ultimately you want to move on to custom pieces, just like you ultimately want to move on to custom costumes. In the meantime, there's nothing wrong with store-bought.

Out of curiosity, what's your problem with injection moulding? I've never heard anyone specifically complain about that before.

>Club larps like at universities often have armouries too where noobs can try weapons by many different makers
Your experience with uni clubs is very different than mine, then. Our administration is pretty shit, we used to have no clue what brand half our arsenal was (or where they came from in the first place) until we phased out all non-Cali swords for Cali ones. Mostly because those won't break as much when handed to morons during the university introduction week, and also because we want everyone to have a sword of equalish length. The only other club I've ever been at also was actively standardizing their equipment.

Must be a difference in larp culture then, as you say.

>Calimacil is great for when you need a larger quantity of low-maintenance weapons, like when outfitting NPC crews
I appreciate that kitting a crew can be hard but I disagree very strongly. Calamacil is not lower-maintainance than a good latex weapon, and there are some makers who do batch orders at a very reduced cost. Eldritch, for example.

There is a midway point between bottom-of-the-barrel stuff and a custom weapon. Many indie makers have ready stock available, I thought that was common knowledge. Medlock and Eldritch have plenty of generic styles available that are perfect for new larpers and not significantly more expensive than Calamacil or Epic Armouries. Even Mike Light has standard stock, though his weapons are probably the best in the UK aves therefore are at a higher price than the other two.

In any case, most of games I've participated in or run encourage new larpers to borrow rather than buy, whether from an older larper, from a game's armoury, or from a ref. I have five standard swords (three 36inch, two 42) that I keep separate from crew kit specifically to lend to newer larpers at Empire. That way, they're more likely to start off using a good weapon and are less likely to hurt someone with a substandard weapon. It helps them learn more quickly and means they can save up (or more often just buy) for a standard weapon made by a superior maker.

(cont'd.)

>> No.10140967

>>10140955 Continuing

The issue with cheap injection moulded weapons, and I've especially found this with Epic Armouries and older Medlock, is that the latex hardens in the winter or sometimes just in the cold at night. This changes the force of the impact and the way it swings. In the hands of an inexperienced larper, this can lead to unnecessary bruising or unsafe fighting. The issue with Calamacil is even worse: not only are the swords themselves already harder and heavier than ideal for larp fighting, but they also have seams down the sides which can rub on skin and catch on kit. Also, the rubber they use for their handles can be dangerous, I've seen some nasty bruises thanks to them.

Finally, it's very easy in the UK for new larpers to pick up good kit second hand. Club larps often hold freecycles, and there are many Facebook groups for selling, buying, and trading secondhand gear. I can list some names if you like. But my first sword was a 42 incher I bought from one of those groups for £20, it was three years old but had seen little use. That's one of the swords I still lend to noobs today.

Last thing, a bit unrelated: Anyone who borrows a sword from me has to spend 10 minutes at the end of the event cleaning what they borrowed and putting silicone on it. We froth and laugh during it, it's not serious business and I've been told that it helps people associate taking care of their kit with fun. It's the bit I do to try to help spread a good larp culture and encourage good habits in new people. If where you are doesn't have a warm and welcoming culture and you'd like to see more of that, have a think about what you can do to encourage the behaviour you'd like to see! When I was new, older larpers put effort into helping me, so I try to do my best for the new folks now. It's a kind of pay-it-forwards thing.

>> No.10141230

>>10140955
>Calamacil is not lower-maintainance than a good latex weapon
but they are. You don't need to spray them with silicon, you don't have to care about the UV light they get, they aren't very likely to get deformed during travel or if accidentally pack something on them, etc.
They aren't pretty but basically a workhorse of larp weapons. If you actually want to talk shit about them call out how they got insanely expensive in the last two years.

I never got why so many people hate calimacil or insist that they aren't safe but for me it's one of the red flags of elitism if a game doesn't allow them

>>10140967

we use calimacils at events where people who doesn't know shit about fighting can try out these stuff. Sometimes more than a few hundred people a day. you can see people who are barely touching each other to retards who go full force swings.
None of these events resulted in any serious injuries in the past 6 years and we mainly use calimacil because any other kind of larp weapons got destroyed in the heavy use or just became unsafe.
So I call bullshit on your statement.

To add to what Hungarian just said, I'd argue that Calimacil weapons require less maintenance than others because they require literally zero maintenance. When your club has less than two hours per training, those ten minutes needed to clean a weapon makes a large difference.

Furthermore, I've seen Calimacil weapons take punishments that would have destroyed most other weapons. I've held enough broken Calimacils to know they aren't unbreakable in the hands of the wrong people (seriously, how the fuck do you manage to snap the core of a larp weapon by accident?), but the sheer number of scratches and dents they can have without any loss of functionality is an important benefit for me.

Calimacil also suffers from a large number of urban legends. There's a lot of rumours which are not true or not true anymore. Sure, Calimacils get harder when it's cold, but there's quite a lot of people who believe that all Calimacils freeze solid at sub-zero temperatures, for instance.

>The issue with Calamacil is even worse: not only are the swords themselves already harder and heavier than ideal for larp fighting
I don't want to sound like one of those people who think they're cool for getting bruises from larp fighting, but your argument is awfully subjective. I've heard more people complain that Calimacils are too light than that they're too heavy. If anyone has a problem with the impact of Calimacil weapons (granted their opponent follows the safety rules), I honestly think that's just them having unrealistic expectations of a physical activity where you swing stuff at each others.

Then again, I'm from across the channel, so that might just be cultural differences.

To echo you Hungarian, it's all depending on the person. I've taken a full swing from a calimacil club (it was the dentist I believe) and while it stung, i knew it would have put someone else on their ass. Also since i use the Treville Rapier (pic related) I have gotten reports that my thrusts are harder than my slashes. That's par the course for calimacil but i can't help but notice it's always the ones who get worked up after getting hit. Better yet it's the fighters who never figure out I'm hitting at the same spot and they wonder why their right side hurts after taking 4 blows to the same rib.As the noob trainer at my larp, I've taken a lot of hits to the face, hands and groin from untrained fighters and mostly shrug them off. Running joke in training is that whoever finally puts me on my ass gets to take my place as the new whipping boy.
Also in the end, if it works who are we to judge what weapons vendors we use. Hell now I got a few more to look and my bank account will probably suffer some more.

>> No.10142189

>>10142176
don't get me wrong, the hits from a calimacil can be absolutely painful. We use them at our hema trainings too for fights without safety equipment and there are more eye-hits that we are willing to admit. But apart from being painful (because something just violently poked your eye) it never has any lasting effect. Be it a thrust or a swing or anything else.

We have a shitload of experience with other stuff too used it extensively, from the shop versions and home made stuff too but we always ended up at calimacil for the durability and it's safety. (though we ordered a few weapons from larphandler because they might be more cost effective than calimacil)

But at the end of the day most larp weapons from proper sellers are safe enough for most games (disregarding what their organizers think) with the only exception to stabbing as that can vary a lot. The main difference mostly come at sustained use or when people doesn't control themselves/don't know how to use it safely.

>> No.10142258

Triple-check your local safety rules before getting one. Larps often get REALLY finicky about flails.

Always get one with a leather "chain" instead of a latex one. Chains have the habit of snagging a bit, so you want the chain to be strong enough. I've seen one flail with a quick-release system so that it opens when pulled on with enough force, that's ideal but probably expensive.

Flails are... not really that good, from a combat perspective. You can't parry effectively with them, and all their attacks are horrendously straightforward and telegraphed. You pretty much NEED a shield for them to be effective in the metagame of most larps, but that applies to nearly all one-handed weapons so eh.

Their only combat advantage is that they're difficult to block or parry, since they wrap around weapons and shields nicely. If people are unaccustomed to fighting flail-users, you're bound to get a few hits in before they know how to respond to flails.

Other than that, flails look rad as shit. If you're fighting people you'll know, they'll make a show out of being hit because, again, flails look rad as shit. I personally wouldn't prefer to use flails except against NPCs I knew OoC, because flails are only going to compensate for their downsides if people are willing to make a show of it.

Half is because we actually have a local store that stocks them (Goblinsmith for those interested. They can ship just about anywhere) so we can even handle some of the generic stuff before buying. In the past two years I've only seen a handful of dildo swords out in the woods since we all started buying from our local guy.
Now if we could get our newer people to buy/construct garb.

Small or full sized? I've seen the small ones work well and the full sized are a pain to maintain and never look good.

What sorts of weapons are you interested in? Light Armouries is mostly good for rapiers and fast swords rather than anything heavy. The may not look like much, but what makes them shine is the construction and weighting. Still they really aren't for everyone and every maker has their own specialty

>Always get one with a leather "chain" instead of a latex one

Why didn't I think of that before, that solves a lot of issues and makes it practical to make one by yourself!

Boy am I gonna go crusade this summer, tower shield cheesing and all. Not that anon but thanks for the suggestion!

Not him but I like my rapiers as much as the next person. I want to take the plunge but I've always had to opportunity to handle what I'm buying before paying. What's a good rapier model light armories sells?

HK is, although kind of low quality, pretty decent for getting weapons you can just rag on a shield line or at a big event like Drachenfest and Conquest (I've lost a lot of beautiful latex weapons there.)

Besides that HK is kind of shit. It's good for the price-quality because of it's cheapness IMO.

As a flail guy, just use them for duels and other flashy moments. They're absolute shite in a linebattle unless you get a farmer's flail. A.k.a it's a pole-arm.

>>10142267
Mainly maces in the 70-80cm range and bec-de-corbins/ravens' beaks/rabenschnabels either on a pole or on a short haft. Looking for durability and weight, with a good look in a basic style. Not afraid to fork over 80-110 for a short and 150-180 for a pole.

Don't you ever recommend hammertrash to anyone, their weapons are way too hard and break fast, though we did once use one of their hammers for actual nailing.

Keep in mind that the chain has to be short enough to not be able to wrap around someones neck.
