There is a reason for that. Growing up nerd isn't easy as I'm sure you know. Growing up black nerd is another level.
Black boys are deep into appearing as manly and cool as possible. There are a lot of reason for this that I won't get into. As such they did not openly like comics, anime, and any game that wasn't based on a sport. Their friends would endlessly ream on them if they did.
So black nerd girls couldn't easily find the black nerd boys who share their interest. White boys are all over the nerd culture and thus, black girls end up with them.

If you want to see more black boys find their black girl then tell the boys to fucking like what they like and stop listening to their friends for approval.

As someone who has attended thirty cons in the sates between 1997-2014, I can agree that the quality of the artificial products (such as makeup, wigs, fabrics, polymers, and construction) have improved. However, the quality of the performance and the people have gone very much downhill.

Been around since 1997 and I agree. I look back at my con photos from that time and there was a lot of meh.
We are better at making wigs look decent (because there is more selection) and we share tutorials on so many things so you aren't flying blind anymore.

Back then, in order to be a fan of the anime or comic, you first must have watched/read it. In the days of dial up and before torrents/streaming sites, this normally meant getting the product through mail order, a hobby shop in person, or at another con directly. It as harder to obtain or even be exposed to a lot of niche media because so few people had access to it. My videostore in my hometown had less than half a dozen anime VHS tapes, and they were constantly being rented out because everyone in the anime community were taking turns watching it.

We had literally one copy of Fushugi Yugi VHS tapes in a collection that ONE person had which she acquired subbed from her travel to Japan, and if you weren't friends with her, she'd never let you watch them at her place and wouldn't loan them to her. That series was completely inaccessible to you unless you could shell out $29.95 per two episode tape (plus shipping) for a 52 episode series. Oh btw, minimum wage was $5.15 and hour (before you were taxed), assuming you were old enough to work.

I remember getting a copy of Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust in 2003 on DVD when it was released in the states......I had been waiting nearly three years to see it, as it had been released in Japan long ago and simply never got sent over here. It sucked knowing it existed and that I couldn't experience it.

Now, just hearing a name of a series means you can look it up within seconds, and begin streaming or downloading it. Fucking incredible!

So the fandom was loyal and dedicated and everything was hand made, honest effort being put into it. If someone took a photo of you at a con, they were using one of their 24 shots of film they had on that roll in their camera

The one thing I have going for me is skill. When I make a cosplay I've got well over a decade of skill backing me up and that is why I will pretty much always look better. Finished seams, proper stitching, nice fabrics, fitting proportions, using good foundation garments, cutting the damn bangs on the wig...I put in the effort.
And I'm ok with a little jealousy they get thousands of likes. But that doesn't translate to much when you don't learn shit from it which is what most of them are doing.

I like this thread because I don't know any black cosplayer nor have them added on my social media. It's also very rare for me to see a black person in... person.
