This year seemed a lot better for cosplay then last years ALA, maybe even better than AX 2018 so let's begin:

I can second this. A pretty good chunk of congoers cosplayed, considering it rained on saturday, that's pretty impressive.

Also AX 2018 was shit cosplaywise.

There was a cute Violet Evergarden, but she was always walking like she was in a rush so I could never ask for her photo...

This guy tho... im biased to armor cosplays

ALA definitely has a higher average bar.
But I think that's thanks to how ALA is like wondercon where people go cause they want to, and not like AX or SDCC where people go just because of the name...

Also cheaper + closer hotels, colder time of year, more people are willing to wear more than 1 cosplay and for longer.

This one Dabi I saw was really hot
Kaiba cosplayer at CWF was also literally perfect, from hair, to face, to cosplay, to body proportions etc.

>Worst cosplays
A few overweight All Might's with bad hair
Hairy, overweight Kamina
In general, people that try to use their natural hair for cosplays and it almost never works

Most of the cosplays actually ranged from decent to great. Like >>10079988 said, there certainly is a high bar, especially compared to the shit people pull at AX.

They are two completely different cons, I wouldn't even compare AX to anything other than Fanime really.

AX is great but the major gripes I have with it is
>hotels are expensive shit, virtually impossible if going solo to not spend 500+ if doing solo for the weekend
>badges are expensive even 6+ months out
>LA traffic is a bore
>Lines for virtually anything and everything
>sea of people in the vendor hall making getting around shit
>sea of people getting around the main area
>people who have been pushed and shoved all day are not even remotely personable by the end of the day
>getting food is fucking a chore unless you uber or are okay with street "food"
>any hotel you book with the con is going to be 15 or so minutes out to get back and forth minimum
>broad spectrum of people means panels are often very broad in topic but not even deep into anything due to time
>I really don't care to see half the cosplay being whatever the last popular anime was, so probably more BnHA again

Really isn't just an AX thing, happens to just big cons which is why I always try to go for smaller cons. Went with a few people who's this was the smallest con they've been to and were surprised they could walk around without squeezing past people, vendors would do small talk, and when sitting down somewhere chit chat wasn't like pulling teeth. ALA has it's fair share of problems but i'd take all that over the shit I've dealt with at major cons that make me just annoyed most the time.

Not that anon, but from how they worded it, no, it looks like they are a convention going vet who just doesn't like what AX has become (like myself) and I personally HATE/LOATHE the LACC surrounding area. For people who do cosplay changes midday, or need to use their hotels as a rest area throughout the day, LACC area is very un-comfy and stressful to get around, not to mention spread out and pricey on top of that.

Also personal gripe, but due to the attendance size of AX, it feels like an amusement park crowd and not a social/community crowd, which is exactly opposite of what I want out of a convention.

For those who love giant industry conventions, all the more power to ya for liking AX. But I know what I want out a convention, and AX no longer can provide it due to their large size.

>> No.10082653

>>10082646
No, actually I've been from a huge amount of cons everything from comiket, to fanime, to ax, to PAX, to even small 1500 user cons; too many to name. I just really find myself going for the 5k-12k user cons since generally they aren't a fucking flood of people to the point of just being there to be there. I'd much rather do smaller cons where I can chill with some people who don't feel like if they don't make it into a 300 person line and hour before the panel they lose the reason they are going.

I point out AX because anon asked about it and because of where AX is located and the crowd it pulls in. It really just takes a lot out of me to go to LA, get the hotel + find people to room with, make sure all check in okay/pay, go to and from the con, and then just remain in a flood of people with little to no interaction aside from "nice cosplay" or "can I get a picture... uhh let's find a place open lol". There just is a lot of value in it for me going to a mildly less clusterfuck to enjoy times talking and interacting with people than what big names provide unless before hand you know a group to follow/meet with.

>> No.10082657

>>10082650
Yeah pretty much, actually have found myself liking ACEN, AWA, Sakuracon, and a few like ALA to go to. Hotels usually never have a 15 minute wait to use them, if I want to uber back to an offsite hotel it is possible, most centers have more reasonably priced hotels around them, and more space in general.

Also I know I am missing out on some ultra big name shit, oh no I can catch it later or something but I'm never that big a person on that shit. Just way more fun to walk around with people take my time, hit up a few good panels that generally have a relaxed crowd, and what not. I have found it way more enjoyable than the race around to do shit and put up with shit at AX compared to other slightly smaller conventions.

Party at the westin pool deck. Etc

>How's the post-con day entertainment look like?
AX goes far into the night but for conversation sake let's just say 8PM/sundown. It looks okay if you know the groups to be with/in. Bars are expensive shit so many people only go to hotel parties.
>After parties?
If you haven't planned your own party with people in your room to one of the main hotels near the con, eh enjoy trying to get lucky into one(hotel common areas like the pool usually card entrance so you need to be staying there). Most people paid a shit load for their hotel rooms, so unless you do know people and got accepted in. It will be nothing like ALA where you can just walk around or mingle in the lobby to go back and drink in a room.
>Restaurants?
All are fucking packed because 1) LA has a fuck load of people downtown already 2) the con floods them 3) very expensive usually unless you go a bit aways from the con, thus needing money and time.
>Please share your experiences.

I liked AX maybe the first time or two but quickly realized what it was after the "star struckness" of it all wore off. There are great idol shows(usually extra fee), guests from japan, top tier voice actors, cosplay to be seen, and merch to be had. However this all comes at a price, if it's not your wallet for an even/merch then it's your time getting into a panel, and if it's not that it's pure luck you make it to finding party/cosplay thing. It's worth it if you really just want to see a huge con and lots and lots of varied things, if you're going for a good amount of substance that can be debatable.

Absolutely, but I think there's some cool bars to go experience after a little pregaming. Places fit for a bar crawl.

ALA is a good con to make friends in before AX, ALA is a good con to test out cosplay you will fix up and improve for AX.

ALA is by no means a replacement for AX, I know many attendees who went from AX to ALA and they said the con is "boring." The ones who never adopted the small con mindset stopped going to ALA, the ones who loves the small con mindset made ALA their main con.

Also the panels at AX only care about industry. CWF is surprisingly popular and they fill their room up with people to the point viewers are turned away. This has been happening for years bit AX still keeps them in the tiny room

Seconding a lot that >>10082666 said. I'm usually wearing cosplays during the daytime, so that takes too much out of me to party aside from drinking and hanging out in a room at night. Even as someone who usually had 1-2 meals a day planned out beforehand and wouldn't go out to eat unless it was with a group of people (for socializing's sake), AX last year still cost as much as my next two most expensive cons combined (Fanime and Sakuracon -- where we drove instead of flying, so that saved some money but was a hellhole on time and exhaustion).
The big culprits, ranked in order:
>hotels in downtown LA
>Lyfting daily or parking on-site
>going out to eat or drink

Keeping an eye on your budget during AX is manageable, if you're with other reasonable adults who know to plan ahead of time and take roles in bringing room food/drinks. Daily Lyfts ended up being over $100 for the weekend, so make sure you're with people who aren't flakes on sharing group expenses.

>assessment of the con as a whole
It's way overblown, easily the anime version of SDCC but with worse crowd and panel management. Go if you want to see a weekend-long spectacle that feels like a miniature city in itself. I dislike it but continue to go because it's a big gathering point for a lot of cross-country friends. Artist's alley is a health hazard in the stuffy, narrow-aisle parking garage that it's been banished to. Dealer's hall is massive, so if you want to look at a bunch of merch in a sweaty room (with better ventilation, at least), that's a way to spend an afternoon. The panel system was moronic last year -- all panelgoers had to stand outdoors in 100F heat because the hallways are now too congested for lining up. The cosplay scene is always impressive, but since AX happens in July in California, you need to prepare yourself for the heat (bring a water bottle - I saw an idiotic number of wanderers last year who were dependent on other people or serendipitous fountains for hydration).

For comparison, I can do Sakura con AND ala for the price of just AX when you add up all the fees in shit. Note I do a private room for sakura con in a hostel but it's 60/night, stayed in it before and like it small walk to the con.

AX is pretty fucking hard to do solo, ALA? not so much the motel 6 had rooms for 70 bucks a night the econo lodge 60 if you booked a few months out. You will be in a rat nest for AX if you try that shit in LA for anything remotely close to the con.

AX for me is a big vacation, I'm flying over from Europe to attend it for both work and pleasure. I'm not too worried about hotel costs even if they're going to be pretty high. I wonder what the prospects of actually meeting new people are in such crowds of dehydrated madness.

I've found it harder to meet people at AX, due much to the
>crowds of dehydrated madness
It's such a big con - everyone has one eye out for the next best thing, so making connections can be harder if you don't have a set group that you're already meeting up with.
Comparatively smaller cons like ALA or Fanime (within California) have been better for meeting new people and actually making lasting connections. At last year's ALA, I had the chance to hang out with at least a dozen new people that I'm still in contact with. For comparison, I only really had a genuine conversation with one new person at last year's AX, whose contact information later vanished into the depths of my luggage.

meeting people at AX is astoundingly hard even though it is a huge number of people. You have to understand that
>a large majority of people are in a hurry to get from A->B
>many people are having pictures taken or want to get pictures
>tired from the day or night before and don't want to talk
and so on.

If you are out of cosplay meeting people is also fairly difficult outside lounge 21 or whatever they call it. There is very little stopping room in the con itself, if someone is stopped it's usually a line for something. Guess by the doors a lot of people stand so there is that, you can also stand outside in the heat if you really want to for some stupid reason.I hope you have fun and a good time but keep in mind it's probably not what you're expecting it to be in terms of anime shit and chill. You have to actively work for finding those niche spots. It's actually surprising but I've actively had harder times making friends at ultra big conventions than the small ones, which is funny since you think way more people you'd have more chances.

It's hard to meet people during the con unless you cosplay and go to gatherings really. You may also meet people while hanging out if they're in a costume from the same series or something but that's really the only way I've met people.
You can try joining discord/facebook groups before the con and making connections so you have some way to contact people after but it can be hard to meet people otherwise in my experience.

Weird

Anyway my favorite thing was momokun on the ala Facebook asking if there were charities she could donate to.
