These are from a Tumblr called "kimonocolours".

As for OP, I think bright vivid colors don't make a lot of sense for winter, aside from reds/greens due to Christmas, even then you can find reds that aren't in your face. Blooming flower and fruit motifs I'd say wouldn't quite fit either.

I got >>10032200 in today.

I am very disappointed. There are tons of stains and it is very yellowed, They heavily edited the auction photos and didn't photograph the majority of the stains. It doesn't look anything like the beautiful pale blue.

The construction on it is still great, but they forgot to mention the prominent staining on the left chest and to the interior.

Between this and the way it came packaged (the "box" was ripped in two and was packing taped put together and it cost like $18 for shipping), I am never buying from EBTH again. Another kimono I got from them arrived with undescribed damage as well.

The shipping "boxes", which are just folded pieces of cardboard with packing tape were just the shit cherry on top.

On a different note, best way to wash kimonos? I paid $110 + shipping for this thing, wonder if there is anything I can do to restore it. Dry cleaning? Soap bath?

I'm kind of in the same boat anon, I have lost 30lbs and my hips have stayed at around 104cm - it sucks, my kimonos just barely don't make it fully around by a couple of inches.

With that much being said, you probably need a kimono that is around ~155cm or more in the waist. if I had to guess. Just remember they have to fully reach around the front of your hips twice (left and right panels), so a safe bet is probably hip measurement + 50% of hip measurement. A little over won't hurt at all, though.

Alright, I've read a bit and I think I can contribute.

I've been making a kimono and a yukata without sleeves for a girl I like.

If it's just for around-the house wear it should be fine. Make sure in the future you press your seams once you're finished sewing them, and it might have been better to go with a more natural material instead of the Joann Fabrics synthetic.

While it was nice of you to make something for her, this falls squarely into "costume kimono" territory. I can tell what pattern you used just by the neckline, the fabric isn't really correct for a the style (it looks like it's meant to be a furisode, which is not generally made of thin synthetics with a frankly stereotypical Chinese pattern).
If you want to make a proper kimono of any type, you need to do a lot of research and you'll need a pattern that isn't from the costume section of the pattern book at Joann.
TLDR: A for effort, but it's more costume than proper kimono.

Nice to hear your opinions, thank you both! :D

It's my first try at creating a costume (the patron is Butterick B6267 if anyone interested) and she knows this gift is because I want to try creating for someone. I learned big time on how to cut the pieces, how to save time, calibrate my sewing machine and many other things

I don't know why you assume I pick my fabric at Joann (didn't know what it was until I googled it, I get my fabric at my canadian version, Fabricville), but yes, I chose polyester because it reflected the light and it was super cheap for a first try. I got advice from my elders it was a really hard fabric to work on for a first try, fuck.

I ended up getting a blind box of kimono items from a black friday sale, and I knew going in that the items were all going to be 'as is'. I ended up with 2 kimonos that are too stained to wear, but am interested in upcycling them. Any ideas on what would be some good projects that I could turn these into?

>I chose polyester because it reflected the light
maybe you're drawn to it, but overly shiny fabric is going to make a garment look cheap, 100% of the time.

Butterick B6267 frankly, looks terrible as a pattern, and was poorly researched. It might be fine as a fantasy costume but you should not think of it as folkwear or historically accurate in any way.

>>10050201
>I don't know why you assume I pick my fabric at Joann (didn't know what it was until I googled it, I get my fabric at my canadian version, Fabricville)
Anon just assumed you were from the US. Think of Joann as a cross between Michaels and Fabricland/ville, they sell craft supplies and fabrics. They're pretty much the same thing.

If you ever decide to graduate to a proper yukata, here is a site with the best instructions I've found thus far: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~weyrbrat/Japan/yukata/ Pick a nice cotton fabric for it.

Anyway, good effort, and keep sewing and learning.

Depends on the size of the stains and the patterns on the kimono. One with a more even and smaller sized pattern like a komon kimono could be made into a cute bag.

Could be wrong, but I don't think that is a proper kimono due to the sleeve length and the thickness of the material. It looks more like a kimono inspired blouse or a wrap blouse. The bottom could either be a hakama or a long pleated shirt. You could achieve the same look with american "kimonos" and tuck it into a long shirt, as they generally have around a half sleeve length.

Hi, I'm back with some noob questions, sorry to bother!

I wanted to ask if it's okay to have an Yukata with the collar made of a different color. I tried searching for examples, but only came up with some sushi maker uniforms (?) ((so I guess it's not really common?))

Anyway, I wanted to know if that's something ok to do or maybe it would look too costumey. (I'm making a checkered Yukata and wanted the collar to be black instead of Checked for fashion reasons).

Thanks!

The biggest concern with the fit of a kimono is if it'll fit you all the way around, and if it's not going to be too short on you.

When you put a kimono on, you fold it up so the hem sits at your ankles (or even higher for some modern styling...but that's something else). This fold is called ohashori. If you're a little shorter, you'll end up folding more fabric into your ohashori.

I've successfully folded a kimono to above knee length and then threw a lolita dress over it. I've also worn a yukata that my taller, curvier in every way friend made to her own measurements, and it looked just fine.

Idk how the sleeve length would be on you, but hopefully it would be fine.

I bought my kimono for 300$CAD-ish. When I was in search of a juban, i was offered new ones for 160$CAD or 140$CAd for used one... This was in Kyoto. Where did I go wrong? Are this kind of underwear really that pricey?

>>10092537
For mens juban just buy one from ebogu for 20 or so
Mens japanese clothes are not very expensive if you look in the right places
You can also buy vintage ones for pretty cheap on ebay from certain sellers

Oooooo heck yes I love turtlenecks under kimono. This looks great.

I also love lolita (or generally high collared) blouses under kimono, and I've done a hoodie once. It was fun.

The last one seems to be a cosplay from Mana manhwa, which was released in 2006. No idea about the rest.

Been a while since I've posted anything. I tried out a kimono I wore above with a new Nagoya obi and a michiyuki over it. I haven't been able to wear kimono as much as I'd want to with my current class schedule, but I have a few with more spring-patterns I'm waiting to wear.

Best secondhand shop I know of would be Ichiroya, though I think there might also be shops that import them in the US.

Yukatas welcome?

I can't decide on the fabric for a new spring-themed yukata that matches my skintone (golden undertones). Help?

Is there any hope for a 5'9"/175 cm woman to wear a kimono?

>> No.10123904

>>10122812
Yes.
It's been discussed briefly here before, but you still have some options.

The most important thing is for a kimono to fit all the way around, so it can close properly. Recently it's been fashionable to wear kimono with funky heels/socks or boots, so you would wear the bottom hem a little higher to show off your footwear. If the kimono is too short you can do this. You can also go hunting for longer kimono as they do exist, even if they are more rare.

Lastly if it's just yukata you can get one commissioned or do it yourself, drafted to your height. Aside from attaching the collar it is pretty simple as it's just a bunch of rectangles.

this should suit fine; it's the most warm tone out of the three so it should be most flattering.

Anyone got some more photos of coords with kimono being styled in modern ways or kimono with modern/unconventional patterns/materials? I love seeing these. I'm combing through TokyoFashion right now but I know there's definitely more places to find photos, I'm just not sure where
