i think it depends. it’s entirely possible to do lewd or bathing suit versions of characters without sacrificing character by stuffing them into a generic black bikini/lingerie set.
now 90% of costhots are never going to put in the creative effort to make a memorable skimpy cosplay but a gull can dream

Depends on how you see the community.

If it's a community of makers and craftsmen, then it directly detracts since it's both effortless and stains the community brand dirty with low hanging sex appeal

If it's a community of "how can we get NEETs excited" then obviously cheap hookerish sex appeal mixed with the slightest bit of nerd culture is the way to go since they're NEETs that are thirsty as fuck.

I personally hate it unless it's a canon costume and it's made by the person (i.e. not store bought) Then, props to them.
