Is cosplay your career, or do you have a different one?

I would highly recommend this, young gulls. I make money in a job that's secure and that pays six figures, but it's hard out here and if you're in any way kind of good with numbers or technical stuff, go for it, and really anyone can learn if you're not the
>teehee, I'm a girl, can't do maths and physics, teeheehee! I'm soooo ditzy!
type and willfully bimbo-fy yourself. Don't follow your dreams, pick a field where jobs are plenty and well paid. Do your dreams as a hobby on the side. Once you're in, watch out for the "women in tech" who are actually trannies. They're batshit and they're backstabbers and will turn on you on a dime, never let your guard down around them, you're safer in a room full of actual men.

Part of it is that they've generally never cared much about what I spend money on as long as I'm doing well in school / university, so I've basically had free rein. They also don't know or track the specifics of how much I spend on what. I don't have other expensive hobbies and don't go out nearly as much as other people my age, so that just means more money for brand.

It also definitely helps that they also both like lolita on me. My mom is kind of old fashioned in the sense that she thinks girls should look very feminine and care for their appearance, so lolita ticks the boxes for that. My dad's been to Japan a bunch of times so he gets that it's a thing. He also collects stuff relating to his own hobby (worth waaay more than what I've spent on lolita) so he's understands the aspect of building up a wardrobe. I think I just got very lucky.

Do you think the mental block is related to them thinking buying dresses is vain or useless?

I'm so tired of last minute changes, being called in, working sudden 12 hour days, not knowing what days I'll have off ever, having to sacrifice planned days off when the bosses say we're having a sale or some shit. I want to travel more and while this isn't bad money where I live, it's not travel money. I'm only 22 so I don't hate myself too much yet, I've got time.

Jokes aside, my advice would honestly be;
1. Git gud at an academic subject (english, math, science, visual art, or music) anything else has too little demand.
2. Advertise your services in applicable areas (newspaper, pamphlets, and community boards). It helps if you have some background in teaching/camps and have access to potential students.
3. The most desired demographics are asian/imigrant students, because their parents WILL pay for extra education and they often have their own communities within the overal community and they WILL talk to each other about it ("Hey, my kid is taking classes with x to learn y")
4. Don't be discouraged. All it takes is a few starting students. After that, they do the advertising for you. They bring in their friends. Extended family. So on in so forth.
5. To continue business growth, make sure you're a good teacher and show the parents food results. Always explain what/how the students are working to the parents.
6. Profit

Here’s the deal. I have a pretty small following, Less the 5,000 per platform. The trick isn’t numbers it’s monetizing a small but loyal audience.

I do very tame lewds, no POV, no implied. Everything is always artistic and tasteful. But the key is having a good relationship with your following. I talk to all of my patrons about what they would like to see in the future and I allow them to vote on Sets too. When you do cosplay professionally like I do you need to treat it like a job. It’s our job to put out high quality photos of characters as we choose to interpret them (whether you have tats, do lewds, whatever). So it’s not a numbers game, it’s about building trust and putting effort into what you release.

Same person, just wanted to add before I forget.

When you choose to pursue cosplay as a career you have to recognize that you’re a brand now. You have to maintain a certain quality and stick with it. Be strategic and confident with everything you do, cosplays you wear, and what you post. You don’t want to attract thousands of teen boys who won’t sub to your Patreon, you want regular people who are willing to pay to support your career and in return you give them quality photos, or whatever perks you choose.

Employment markets can change quickly so I wouldn't choose a field solely because it is lucrative now, expecially since it can be years before you're done with school. Whatever you chose I'd try to make sure it has skills you can translate into other fields so you have a backup. For example with physics I can translate into more of a computer science field or engineering without having to start from scratch.

At $20-ish you're either putting a deposit on a dress you'll receive months in the future (and you'll have to pay another ~$40-50 bucks when the dress is completed), or you're getting an even cheaper, crappier replica from a shop that uses stolen photos of the original. OK, see, I like all kinds of styles, on different people. I love dressing people up/suggesting them styles and pieces if they give me the chance.

but for myself, hmm, I think I would like owning mostly Ouji (nothing too aristocratic, more casual), Lolita (gothloli, classical loli, I like chiffons and neutral/pastel colors, nothing like sweet OTT for me) and traditional/feudal japan style pieces (not sure if there's a specific term, also sorry English is not my native language).
Mori-kei too, I love it so much, even though it's out of my comfort zone and probably wouldn't go well with my figure...

The problem is not only I can't afford, but also buying is a risk of waste of money because it might look good on the models, but on me look horrendous, and then it's hard to resell it esp if it's offbrand, I imagine...

>>10000137
I've wanted to buy from them since I discovered the world of jp fashion! they've changed so much. Did something happen to bodyline though? I've noticed the prices have gone up (maybes it's just my imagination), and a lot of pieces from years ago are gone. they had some ouji stuff I wanted to buy but it simply disappeared, RIP.

sorry for derailing and rambling, gulls. thank you for your kindness.

Two stupid questions. My laptop isn't really meant for gaming and I can only run skyrim like an hour before it starts getting really hot. Is that long enough to work for this?
And if I were to make an instagram or something and offer an add on that as a reward, should i take boob shots or what? Is it understood that they're there for boobs, or would that be trashy and turn them off? Boob-infused selfies for plausible deniability?

honey you need a really good connection and a really good PC for streaming. your laptop that can barely run skyrim and your stock webcam and mic are not going to make for a good stream and donation incentives.

you don't have to use your tits to stream, honestly most look down upon it besides those who actually donate and give money - so you have to decide what matters more, money or streaming as a personality.

start with trying to build a new pc, you won't get anywhere with a shitty laptop. it quite literally won't work.

My personality is terrible but I write a damned good cover letter. Most "entry level" jobs say they want 1-3 years experience, but that's just bullshit to keep out insecure autists. If they dismiss you from the selection they can use it as an excuse so it's beneficial for them to keep that. In reality if that was enforced, no one would ever be hired. A fresh grad has no experience, at one point in time everyone had no experience, so how came they into their first experience? As I said, the requirements are not so strict as you think. Feel free to not believe me, I've only experienced this first hand after all. The entire world judges older people for doing things deemed for teens/young adults. You just have to pick your route. Confident women can wear whatever they want regardless but since you're self conscious, you can start off wearing classic or gothic which are usually more elegant than cute so they can suit older women well; pic related is the designer of Innocent World wearing the garments she's designed herself, as an example. You can always switch to sweet later on when and if you choose to do so.
Same for cosplay, and in that case you have even more possibilities: You may not be able to pull off cosplays of teenage characters but there are plenty of older characters to cosplay which will suit you fine.
Bottom line is that you shouldn't be so concerned with anonymous people's opinions that it stops you from having fun in your life.

There's nothing wrong with focusing on your career first before indulging in hobbies. I was a great student and employee with a degree and experience in my field and I still struggled to get a job. I was already a Christmas cake before I scored an ok paying job, keyword is ok. I still budget and I had to move to the other side of the world leaving my friends and family behind, but now I can support myself with a little left over for my hobbies. Being older doesn't mean all of your hobbies end. Do your best to take care of yourself and secure income so when the time comes you can enjoy your hobbies.

I worked a retail management job for several years. On top of my salary, I'd get sales bonuses which could equal a new dress or something nice every month. For awhile I was buying something new every month. I had enough to pay for bills, put some into savings and spend on hobbies.

The stress level was too high, I was developing anxiety issues. I couldn't actually enjoy the hobbies I was investing in because I could never get away to enjoy them or didn't have the energy to be in the moment when I was able to.

Ultimately I quit for a lower paying job where I'm a lot happier and have more time. I'm doing graphic and web design for a small company. It's a work from home job. I make about half of what I was making before, but it gives me the opportunity to learn more programming languages and focus on what makes me happier. I do artist alley too, and that helps keep my hobbies funded.

I have a low intensity sales job which pays okay, just enough to be able to splurge on occasional materials or props, but more importantly i make my own schedule, work from home, and it's deadlines are fluid, so if I want I can do a weeks worth of sales work in 2 days and just coast the other 3 while working on cosplay.

I used to be more carefree with it before I got married, but now my wife of course disapproves of such schemes and asked me to budget my hobby better. As a result I've given up all but the most basic materials such as cardboard, felt and hot glue, and just make it work. Honestly it's very rewarding, results arent as professional looking as eva foam and paint, but it's still therapeutic and outfits continue to look alright.

My rule of thumb is if I cannot build it with $50 or less including new tools I'd have to get to finish, then I dont do it.

I work alone. It's not a terrible job, but it is physically demanding and tedious, and there's no job stability - clients can drop you without warning if they run into some money troubles. Currently, I have 6 weekly houses and 1 monthly.
If you're a born-and-bred American you might have to start at a maid service. I'm an immigrant, so I started cleaning houses with my mom during summer vacation back in middle school. Then she let me take over two of those houses, and my other clients found me through recommendations from their friends.
People tend to prefer their cleaning ladies to be foreign, or at least noticeably poorer than them, which is why many cleaning ladies I know tend to obscure the fact that they're middle class soccer moms.
The hardest part is probably breaking into the industry. Once you're in, word of mouth will carry you forward.

I work at the port authority in vessel traffic services (a bit like air traffic control ) No previous qualifications needed, just skillsets, ability to work in a team for 12hrs shifts and sometimes in urgent situations, eg. This week we saved 3 people from the water after their boat broke and had sunken in search & rescue scenario.

The maritime industry is probably the best kept secret for high wages, it's not as glamourous as some ther profession but it pays very well. If you're willing to sacrifice your youth and work offshore it's worth it (not best if you suffer from mental health illnesses since it can be an isolated place.)

Sure I could splurge on better equipment or materials or even buy actual replicas, but at the end ofthe day i just want to scratch that creative itch, and cardboard and hot glue do the trick just fine without having to dip into vacation savings.

NAYRT but a lot of companies are starting to do this now. Obviously if you're taking so much PTO that you're not even completing your work, that's an issue, but most people don't do that. It started with new, "hip" companies doing this and so employees were leaving to work for those, so now even your older companies are starting to adopt the unlimited PTO policy so they're not leaking talent.
