I'm making a sword blade that's about 24 inches long and 3/8 inches thick out of acrylic since it needs to be clear and light up. I'm probably going to stabilize it in the hilt by fusing it to a 1" wide polycarbonate tube but I'm still worried about the weight and it tearing through an eva foam hilt that I'm planning on making. Any advice?

Stabilize the blade by having the middle layer of the hilt be made out of fiberboard or basswood, then layer your foam on top of that.

I've done it. It ended up working for the head size but had some predictable things to look out for:
>didn't sit as securely as before -- just pin it in more intensely
>wig fibers were getting parted over a larger area, so the wig cap showed through -- added more wefts right above the ear area

So a friend wants to commission me to make a cosplay for him, pic related specifically and I've never done a commission before and wouldn't take the job if he wasn't a friend. I'm at all sure what to charge him for this because it's work and it's not the easiest cosplay in the world to make either, but he's a good friend, so I don't feel like I want to charge him what I would if I was doing this professionally. But I'm also not sure if he understands the cost of commissioning a custom cosplay either.

Or other words, I'm stuck because I don't even have a baseline, but I do want decently fair compensation for the work while also doing my friend a favor by charging him less than a pro would.

>>9996688
Don't feel like you have to undersell your craftsmanship.

If there were some other circumstances behind it (you owe him a favor, etc...), then sure, give him a discount. And even then, it should be more than 10% percent of the asking price.

having been in this situation before, don't under charge your friend. If you do a lot of work for free you'll end up unhappy if your friend isnt as appreciative as you hoped or doesn't end up wearing the cosplay much or spills beer down the front of it or whatever. The base line is materials plus an hourly rate for how much time you spend on it (including planning, patterning, shopping).

When cosplaying a character with varying colors in official art, what should you do?
The only fabric at the fabric store is really red, but I bought a tail off of taobao that ended up being extremely yellow. Should I buy a more orange fabric online?

>> No.9998453

>>9998443
I personally just go for the closest approximation and occasionally that means combining the colors of different variations within reason. It might just be my monitor, but the 2 bottom left pics seem pretty red to me so as long as the fabric available isn't like a bright primary red, I don't see the problem. Flareon's also pretty recognizable so if you're close then you'll be fine. However, if you're really that concerned, I'd look for the orange, but don't stress yourself out over it.

>>9998911
There are various kinds of satin, just so you know.
Also, you can use the reverse side, which is matte.

On any case, that dress is a bit more structured, so low grammage satin will probably look very frumpy. I'd go for a cotton/polyester mix.

>> No.9998917

>>9998066
You have to alter a bit of the sleeve head so it can hold the pad. Then you must get vintage pads or an equivalent, as the regular ones are a different shape. Adding boning will make the jacket very uncomfortable and it will not "move right" with your body. Check vintage patterns.

>> No.9999088

>>9998595
Shiny Peach dresses photograph like 100% ass. Use a fully matte fabric. Highly recommend NOT doing what other anon said and using reverse side of satin unless you plan to FULLY line the dress, which if you're a beginner I'm guessing no. Find a thick polyester/cotton blend (I'd go no higher than 80/20 nor lower than 50/50) with a substantial weight to it and no sheen - it'll be easiest to sew with and not terribly awful to wear lined or unlined.

I would probably get a pair of regular boots with the amount of heel lift that you want, remove the heels and either pry the outsole off (cheap boots like that are always just glued together) or sand it down so that you can build around it... Then build a structurally-sound platform cage below and stick some soling rubber underneath. Cover the sides with-- desu that looks like it's probably painted silver and has a lace overlay with some gimp braid.

Another thing you could try I guess is make the cutout on some platforms like that already and then jam some metal supports up through the sole. Unless you use some that are long enough they poke into the footbed, you won't be able to feel them.

If you want a 3D effect of raised threads, you're looking for embroidery instead of applique. Your options are
>embroidery machine (expensive, learning curve to use)
>hand embroidery (time-consuming)
>commission someone with an embroidery machine to do the embroidery directly onto a knit top (expensive, especially if they'll need to design the letters and images from scratch)

If you're a complete beginner and want a hands-on learning approach to this instead of putting it into someone else's hands, I'd recommend

or

do not do embroidery on a knit, the stretching of the material as it's being tried and removed will stretch and warp your embroidery thread. you can put interfacing under the knit while you embroider but it will stop the material from stretching where the letters are stitched and you may end up with a little bit of puckering around them. hang around a joann's near the cricut section or find someone with access to a cricut machine; they can make you a custom vinyl decal if they're cool, and then it's just carefully ironing it onto the shirt with a piece of cardboard tucked into the shirt to keep from gluing the front to the back with vinyl, and parchment paper over the vinyl to keep it from melting to your iron. double check those last directions but that will be your best bet. you will still want the shirt material stretched around a piece of cardboard because if you iron it straight on and pull it on, your body filling out the top will rip and pull apart the vinyl and force it to crack. giving the material a little stretch will give you more breathing room.

Some of my favorite sweaters are embroidered knits. It's fine so long as the stitches are diagonal / zigzag / on the bias. That will preserve the stretch enough to prevent puckering.

Use a plastic tapestry needle and metallic gold yarn (larger than the yarn it's knit with) if you decide to go that route, anon. Don't pull the threads too tight. Gently knot the yarn around the previous stitch (from the inside) when you're done with that section. Whenever possible, your stitches should be at the same angle as the knit itself.

Morphsuit, paint on bones (or get one with pre-printed bones. Some Corpse Bride cosplayers have cast/sculpted bones and glued those to the outsides of their underlayers, so you could look into that if you want a more "realistic" look.

>>10005336
~5mm looks fine. If you need to, you can use thinner foam, glue two pieces together with spray glue, and cut your pieces out from the new double-thick foam.

>>10005329
Acrylic paint and spray paints will be fine (any specialty craft paints, too).

>>10004928
You could try backing it with a thin knit fabric (like old t-shirts), since that will bend with the foam easily. If the adhesive backing isn't covered, it'll still be there after heating, though I don't know how it would react to dipping. Sandpapering it off might be more effort than it's worth.

If you layer panels over an undersuit, be prepared to not have the same musculature as the suit -- even the movie suit has muscle padding underneath it to fill out the suit to an idealized shape. For fabric, use a red metallic spandex and a stretchy black mesh netting over it (tulle might work, if your suit already fits you well enough without a lot of stretching).

>>10003525
Chopping open the armholes? Cut out the actual triangles of the jaggedness (start out shallower than you think you'll need; it's easier to make cuts deeper than to try to replace lost fabric), then go over them again with smaller cuts to create more random jaggedness. Rub it down with sandpaper, diluted brown/black paint, or go outside and rub it on some asphalt that a car's driven over (grease and grime will help break down the fibers). Look up "weathering tutorial."

>>10003483
E-6000 and gorilla glue will work. This might be less sightly, but you can also cut *very thin* strips of clear packing tape and place them over crucial stress points for extra security (ie places where you're afraid the EL wire might pop out of whatever channel you've made for it)

What do yall do with /very/ old cosplays -- ones where the construction isn't good enough to try selling off to someone else, or ones from fandoms that have died down in popularity / obscure fandoms?
I have nearly a dozen storage boxes stuffed with old stuff, and am about to buy another one. These are the biggest hassle every time I move. I don't think the fabric's good for reusing as scrap material, either.

>>10006207
For the jacket, cotton sateen (going off what your experience level seems to be). If you're comfortable working with trickier fabrics, stretch metallic vinyl.
For the trim, any metallic gold fabric will work for the binding/bias tape.

Doesn't hurt to ask if they're looking for an extra pair of hands. Don't go in asking if they'll teach you; ask if they need volunteers in the costume department. If you build up rapport and good relationships, the time could roll around where one of the senior members might sit you down and run you through some sewing stuff.
However, don't expect too much (I second the other anon's recommendation to actually get formal sewing classes if you need the base experience). I volunteered at a community theater once (with several years of sewing and making alterations to other people), and they just had me cleaning out the costumes storage area and didn't contact me again after the first night. In retrospect, the older ladies running the department might have been a little territorial about it.

Shaping the foam and figuring out what proportion of "muscle" looks right on your body is the worst part. If you'd like I can ask them for tips.

My questions:
Is there a way to look up past fabric stock that Joann's carried? I have some (possibly Halloween knit?) fabric I bought years ago from them and don't remember any of the details of it, but I love it and want to see if I can find more of it anywhere.

And for making a moderate sized mascot-like head, should I sculpt a base of it out of foam or just make a hollow orb and build off that? I'm not aiming for bobble-tier, but it has to encapsulate my head.

I’m planning my first monster hunter cosplay and I’d like to make an insect glaive to go with it since it’s my favorite weapon in the series. The issue I’m running into is the scaling of the kinsect... I didn’t realize just how big they were until I started planning for this.

Having one accurate to scale seems not only unwieldy around a convention but also just... oversized? I’m thinking of scaling it down to about the size of the bracer so I don’t have to forego the bug. Is it worth it to sacrifice the accuracy of scale for practicality and comfort?

Pic for reference. The length is almost as tall as the hunter holding it, meaning mine would be at least 4 feet long and mounted on my arm if size accurate.

So I had a piece of foam armor that I made about 6 months ago, normal eva foam. It was sealed well with plastidip and was painted with pic related, just normal spray paint, but the paint has cracked where it got bent in storage. I thought the point of plastidip is that it stays flexible and doesn't crack, did I just misunderstand?

I recently started using long gloves like pic related for cosplaying fantasy characters with colored skin so I don't have to use bodypaint and worry about leaving fingerprints everywhere. It's supposed to go around it. See here:
https://materialmama.wordpress.com/2007/02/06/how-a-bobbin-works-and-some-free-pattern-ideas/

Make sure you have the bobbin thread in facing the right direction, too. In my upright bobbin, the thread should be wound counterclockwise, and... I THINK the drop in bobbin on my newer machine is too, but I'd have to check it.
https://oldsingersewingmachineblog.com/tag/which-way-round-does-the-bobbin-go/

Putting it in the wrong way will really mess it up.

Re-thread the top of the machine with the needle RAISED all the way up. If you don't, then it won't catch the thread right in the coils and your tension will be off when you sew it. That hook (the one that goes up and down to pull thread through) that you thread the top thread through needs to be raised all the way up.

https://www.craftsy.com/sewing/article/how-to-re-thread-a-sewing-machine/

And like other anons have said, check tension in the top first, before messing with the bottom. Be sure your needle is in straight, not backwards, and is sharp. Be sure it goes straight down and doesn't click or nick any part of the machine.

i would make a cardboard 'skeleton' for the overall structure and make the outer black layer out of very opaque fabric while leaving a small slate where your eyes would be to be covered with more sheer fabric so that your eyes aren't too visible.
you can still make the eyes out of foam and just have a velcro (hard side of the velcro) as their backing so that they can stick to the fabric of the mask.

if you wanna be able to see through the eyes then you're gonna have to cut out the eye shapes and sew in new ones with a sheer fabric. if you don't care about being able to see through the eyes then you can paint them on with fabric paint.
thing is, if the mask stretches too much, you're gonna have to find a way to paint while it's stretched, keep that in mind.
