Interested in making some muscle padding for a cosplay (yes I know it's hard to pull off, no I don't wanna buy a premade suit because they're all bulkier than I wanna go). Just cover felt with a cotton or any other top fabric you'd wanna use for the color and texture.

>>9983440
Low density is cheap, easier to cut and carve and offers more movement. High density is useful if you want to use a latex or other liquid top skin that you dont want absorbed into the foam too much. If you go for the fabric covered muscle suit, buy the lowest density you can find.

I've never really been into cosplay nor cared about craft in general, but lately I felt an interest in doing a specific one, however I have no experience at all about it and the cosplay I want to do certainly will never be able to be bought online.

So, i'll just ask, how fucking hard would be to make a Demonica from shin megami tensei? The military bodysuit is still doable, but I have no fucking idea how to make a helmet like this, I looked up a few tutorials but they all recommend .pdo files and the demonica helmet is too obscure to have one.

Is Aliexpress a good place to get cosplay? I'm wanting an UMP9 Girls Frontline cosplay, and that's the only place I've been able to find it. I recently ordered one from Taobao, but it didn't fit and they don't do custom sizes like I thought.
The fact that the listings on Aliexpress all use the exact same images with obvious watermark hiding or replacing just feels kinda skeevy.

instead of trying to find tutorials on how to make that specific helmet, try looking up tutorials on how to make your own cosplay blueprints/patterns
.
then you pretty much go from there.
channels like punished props on youtube have some good tutorials on that.

once you master that, you can pretty much make anything without having to rely on pre-made stuff.

27" and thick hair here. I wear two wig caps: one the open-top net style - pull it over your head and past your neck (like wearing an infinity scarf), pull it up to your hairline, and swoop all your hair into it by gently twisting it like a cinnamon roll; and then another regular wig cap over it to compress the whole package and contain all any ends that might spill from the top.
What's wrong with braiding your hair? If you're afraid of being "effeminate," braided hair is the best way to get your hair to lie the most convincingly-flat under a wig cap.

Either talk a few similarly-nerdy friends into going to a con with you, or brave the con yourself. I spent 1-2 years mostly going to cons by myself and meeting people, and four years down the line, I've participated in several cosplay groups with different circles of friends. It also helps to create a social media account and befriend locals online -- that way, you're able to meet up with people irl.

Like honestly? I'd start with something of similar shape and start patterning off of it. It sounds silly but a bucket is really similar and something you can branch/pattern off of. After that, EVA foam and PVC pipe.

Okay, I'm planning to do a Demi-fiend cosplay and instead of bodypaint, I'd really like to do a bodysuit or very fitted top and leggings. Because 1 I'm a female and 2 it would be way more consistent. This is doable, even as a first cosplay. I'd say go for it!

Here is what you are going to need for this project:

1: look up tutorials. At least 5-10 on making foam armor pieces. They might not tell you how to make this one in specific, but the techniques they teach you are going to help you anyway.

2: Get the materials and tools. For this, you will need EVA foam (foam mats for the base helmet, and then some thinner foam sheets you can cut into shapes and glue on top for detail-work), kwick-seal or some other calk, a bunch of super glue, some spray primer + gold spraypaint, and whatever you use for the eye windows. You can either try and find a transparent red plastic, or you can buy a clear thin plastic and dye it with a red synthetic fabric dye. There are tutorials for that too.

You will be making the helmet out of foam, and the caulk is to fill in gaps and other tiny imperfections. Look up a tutorial, this is a trick that very much improved my last cosplay project over the previous when where I didnt know about this.

The rods will probably be some combination of wooden dowels and pvc pipes, use whatever you can find. It all ends up gold in the end.

Once you have basic shape down, you will be using some combination of heat gun, mod podge, and plastidip spray to take your foame and give it a nice, smooth, even finish before you paint it. Find a tutorial.

Tools wise, for this project you will need a a boxcutter, a space to work, a heat gun (for sealing) and a rotary tool like a dremel. The rotary tool, with the proper heads, can be used to cut wooden dowels or pipes, and it also can be used to sand rough cuts or use even more sanding to shape the foam in the first place.

It all seems intimidating at first, I know. It will take some time to make since you are figuring this out, and if we are being honest the first attempt might not be your best. I redid my first props later once my skills had improved. But you CAN do it.

>> No.9985694

>>9985666

As a followup: since this is your first cosplay you might not have considered some quality of life stuff in regards to your cosplay.

The first is that this is a full body costume with a foam helmet. This means that, if you are not careful, this could end up being really hot to wear. Anything you can do, even stuff just like wearing breathable summerweight pants or shirts instead of normal clothes or including a couple discreet vents in the helmet for airflow, will lessen your chances of turning into a nuclear fireball on a hot day.

Normally I'd make a mention of thinking about how you are going to store your phone and wallet and such for easy use, since a lot of people overlook the wonders of pockets until the day of the con, but you should be set on that.

You might want to consider, once you have the helmet made, getting a small microphone and a portal speaker to clip on your belt, like tour guides use. They are not terribly expensive, and putting a mic in the helmet means people can actually hear you when you talk. It also probably just fits your whole getup to sound like you are talking over a speaker system anyway.

Any advice on making a pumpkin helmet out of foam floormats? Tips on construction and texturing would be appreciated. I don't want it to look perfectly symmetrical, like a big orange sphere. I'd like to get it looking as close as I can manage to an actual pumpkin.

>> No.9985707

>>9985705

I'd imagine you would cut and make each 'section' of the pumpkin and join them together. This will naturally create a somewhat rough and uneven shape, but that's what you want.

If its just a pumpkin head, though, I have to ask: certainly there is some halloween decoration or the like you can buy and modify into a helmet. Why not go that route? Fake pumpkins are something an entire holiday churns out.

What color hair are you trying to portray?
I have black hair and have cosplayed characters with black facial hair before. What's worked best for me is growing out my hair naturally to get close, then using makeup to seal the deal. For a beard, I grew out my patchy stubble and then just scribbled on my face with a fading black marker to make it look fuller and darker. For sideburns, I grew them out and shaved the shape as best I could then finished it off with black facepaint for a sharper look.

Make the "muscles" bigger than you think you will need. The foam will compress under the weight of the fabric and you will loose volume. This is especially true if you are using any stretch fabric. I know you don't want to look bulky, but I didn't account for compression on a short film several years ago where I was making a custom muscle suit, and I had to redo the whole thing.

Other respondent is delusional.
This is a kid; she won't care about the quality of the costume, and the big takeaway for her parent will be the memories from Halloween itself. Here's what to do:
>Fried buys a white close-fitting v-neck t-shirt for the kid.
>You add the collar (it's basically a rectangle with a chunk taken out) and collar bow (can be snapped on or use velcro).
>Add the white sleeve poofs to the shirt.
>Make a blue gathered circle skirt to the kid's waist measurement. The waistband can be elastic, and you don't need to worry about making the V-dip at the waist (it's just an extra detail).
>Make the hip bow. Attach it with velcro (potential for losing it during Halloween night) or sew it directly to the skirt back.
>Buy a pair of kid-sized long white gloves (party/Halloween stores should be selling them now); you make the red poofs at the top.
>Boots: You can look into making tall shoecovers for the kid, but from experience, the kid might be happier with a pair of red rainboots that won't be flopping around or sagging all night. Even a pair of red sneakers with white laces would get the point across.

A lot of the shapes I mentioned above (mainly the collar, collar bow and hip bow, and sleeve and glove puffs) are covered here.
IIRC, this tutorial uses a different and more intensive skirt method, but if you look up "double circle skirt," you could get some tutorials for how to make a gathered skirt that will fake the Sailor Moon look well enough.

For the skirt, use lame or organza. For the tabard, you'll likely need to paint that yourself.
>Use a sturdy fabric for the base - duck canvas takes paint alright and has a stiff body.
>Buy yellow fabric. It's easier to paint a light fabric darker, and less easy to paint over a dark base fabric with lighter colors.
>Buy acrylic paints in the colors that you need, and buy fabric medium. (An alternative is to use fabric paints, but I like the results from acrylics + fabric medium better).
>Use painters tape to block off areas to get clean lines

Bought (as in from a generic seller; I've seen high-quality commissions):
>Poor fit, usually loose or too large
>Flat details: emblems, straps, belts, etc might be screenprinted instead of separate pieces
>Flat, uniform colors
>Evenly-spaced wrinkles running vertically and horizontally, as if the outfit had been recently unfolded from a package
>Cheaper materials - thin fabrics, shiny synthetic fabrics, little variation in types (ie sateen, linen, silk, etc -- manufactured cosplays tend towards thinner cottons and polyblend satins)

If you make the dress out of stiff/solid enough fabric and don't add anything too heavy as trim, it might just stand out on it's own. Otherwise, a simple layer or two of a super stiff nylon crinoline as a flat-lining or a separate, petticoat-like layer would do the trick.

Adding to what the other anon said, alterations would be a good way to practice getting familiar with tailoring and fitting garments. It's a step towards making one's own clothes, if that's the direction the person is interested in taking.

Even then, they sometimes still have active discussion at 5-6 months after being made and still have relevant info or pictures people like to go back to. Hell, last year's AX thread went for almost 8 months before hitting bump limit, and was very close to being bumped off the catalog for quite a bit of it.

That sounds like simplistic advice, but it's really true. Cosplayers put their time, money, and effort into building their costumes and making the completed effort. If you want to do it, you have to pick something that's going to give you enough drive to carry the project through every bump and loss of interest. It's a long-scale project but it's so worth the feeling of wearing it in the end. Make a long list of potential characters and spend some time thinking about the costumes. You'll do great.

What does it matter? If it makes you happy, do it.

Recently bought a cosplay where I know the skirt will probably fit, but the top is not going to fit my flat chest. That's okay. Don't try it with a cheap wig, the fibers will likely melt in the hot dye. As long as it's a wig that can handle high temp though, it's probably fine. You can test the fibers under hot water before using the entire wig, if you've got a white wig lying around and are unsure.

You can try the "Sandstone" dye too. I've dyed a couple synthetic wigs and this is the advice I can give:
Make sure your dye is made for synthetic fabric. This might seem obvious, but dye made for natural fibers like cotton or wool will not stick
It's best to error on the side of too little dye. You can always dye it for a bit longer but it's much much harder to remove dye
Be extremely thorough when you wash out your wig. Rinse until the water runs clear or else the dye will rub off on your clothes and stain them.
Dyeing you wig WILL ruin the style so style after dying. For example, I dyed an Arda Stevie and it lost it's wavy fluffy texture and I had to restyle it.
You can mix dyes, but it can make the color much more intense, either dilute it in a lot more water or dip it for short periods of time and keep a very close eye on it

So I'm well into planning a King Crimson stando cosplay. Question is: How would you all deal with the lines on the bodysuit? A friend with sewing (but limited garment) experience thought it could be done with just thread. My goal is to get volume however it gets done, so that they pop out from the background red.

Additionally, I've never worked on knits or other stretchy fabrics before. How would this all work together? I have a maroon bodysuit ordered for the base, but I don't know if I'll have to cut it into panels, resolve the lines, then resew, or... what.

Ideas?

>> No.9990666

>>9990661
This is some advanced level stuff, anon. If you've already bought a bodysuit, if you or your friend have any skill in disassembling it, I'd say to use a stretch bias tape, but that seems like a nightmare to me. Making from scratch I'd do the same thing, but be sure to mark where your seams and cross lines match up so it doesn't look wonky. Use tear away stabilizer so the machine doesn't eat the fabric, too. Nice trips. Thanks! I have limited experience making prop pieces from thermal plastic, which should get me through the shoulders, waist/hips, knees and gloves.

I'll work with someone with a good foundation in sewing so I don't muck it up. Pattern matching is something I've heard of in videos I've been watching, but I'd rather not waste what I've got with my inexperience.

Good to know they make stretch bias tape, I'll pass that along to the person I'm working with. Thanks!

It might not be a bad idea to try some beginner's sewing projects that aren't cosplay-related at all, to build up a set of core skills to then apply to harder projects.

Possibly burp cloths? They are small, consist of two types of fabric, and make great gifts for family and friends (if they have babies) or you could sell them at a craft fair or farmer's market too.

You won’t be able to sew all the way up the arms and legs of the bodysuit without cutting it apart. If you want to go this route I’d cut the outer side seams of the suit from ankle to wrist and use yellow satin lingerie elastic for the stripes. You can zigzag stitch that down easily. But it would be a heck of a pain to match up

Would that elastic be the type that is usually sewn inside seam allowances, for example, at the top of leggings? As long as it's presentable for right side applique, it sounds like it will do the trick. If the seams were on the backs of the legs/arms it would be tempting to just take the mismatches.

I would go for it as long as your suit shapes your proportions to the right look for Kira. As in, a baggy suit will highlight your short stature, while a slim cut should have the opposite effect.

Also bonus points if it makes a potential KQ cosplayer with you look bigger/more menacing.

I'm imagining it will turn out like pic related.

To expound upon that, in the above picture, TROTW is wearing fairly baggy slacks, and the arms of the suit are too loose. Buy a cheap suit and get it taken in, and it will pay dividends. Also, depending on which Kira's suit you go with, you get the stripey (long-ways) shirt which should give a taller look too.

Same brows as yours, anon. The gluestick method /does/ work for me, you just need to be thoughtful about how you apply it.
>clean brows beforehand to get rid of oils
>one light layer of glue at a time, letting it dry between layers
>at least three layers
>powder the final layer
>go over it with foundation/concealer
>shadow or pencil in brows atop
Drag tutorials on how to cover brows are helpful.
This might sound like an extreme method, but I referenced the shape of my extant brows when filling them in at the end, and they looked natural enough (just white instead of black-brown) - it just depends on the shape/style of brow you're creating.

I've tried white eye pencil in my brows, too - and while I had the problem of the natural brow hairs still darkening the hue on top of it, this could probably work for you here since you're going for a darker green shade.

A search for "eva foam metal" brings up a surfeit of tutorials. It might help to identify where your problem is:
>texture: did you close the foam cells before sealing it with plastidip?
>weathering: try adding in highlights and shadows to bring out the edges/corners/etc
>finish: auto finish paints for a high-gloss metal look, or use a glossy spray seal

Other products I've used that have helped silver foam pieces read "metallic"
>golden fluid acrylics coarse stainless steel - has little "flecks" of stuff in it that give a gritty/rougher metal look
>rub n buff

Yeah, that's really vague, what do you want specifically? I guess for general tips, you should start small. A well-done but simple cosplay is way better than half-assing something too ambitious. Also, pay attention to details, they can often make or break what is considered a good cosplay.

Also, a lot of the things involved in making cosplay are things that only come with experience. That's not to say your first few cosplays will necessarily be godawful, especially if you pick them carefully as I said, but it's all about personal growth. Each cosplay will make you a better cosplayer if you learn something from making it.

And don't procrastinate, give yourself time to get things together. A cosplay made 2 nights before the con is going to suffer, no matter how skilled or experienced you are.

Clueless newbie here. I want to try to make a Dai Li agent cosplay, but my total sewing experience is 2 pillowcases, a quilt and a very basic tunic. I need help. Specifically, what kind of fabric should I use? Do you know of a pattern I could modify for this? And how do I get the shoulder bits right? And the best way to handle the sleeve details? Any other tips would be appreciated.

Also, in the show, depending on the lighting, the robes have appeared more greyish than green in a lot of scenes, but do you think it's a bad idea to go for a brighter green like pic related just because it seems more earth kingdom to me?

I really REALLY want to cosplay Tanya. I got the perfect body type and am really young looking. My problem is this: Do I settle for the cheap-looking 100$ cosplay I can buy online so I can cosplay her sooner, or do I save up and wait 6-8 weeks for a custom-fitted 400$ genuine WWII uniform? There's an cosplay apple picking event coming up in a little over a month and the high-quality cosplay definitely won't make it by then, but the cheap one will and I can buy it right now.

What do I do?

do something more simple. maybe like the classic doomguy suit.

What is the best way to cause damage to a purple robe like I have in the picture? I know how I want to do the skeletal parts but I have no clue on the best way to do the damaged look

>> No.9994609

>>9994581
Depends on the fabric, you could burn it/slash at it with scissors, you just need to be aware of it potentially fraying. Look up tutorials on distressing clothes.

>>9994573
For the hat you can use buckram/stiff interfacing and wire for the brim, as well as a fashion fabric, and a lighter weight interfacing for the cone (to keep it up right). I'd suggest something medium weight, but honestly as long as it matches your dress that's the main thing.

For the emblem I'd suggest just carving it from eva foam and then gluing it to the hat band. I'm sure you can find tutorials for both with a bit of googling, and you can go through other peoples wips since LWA was pretty popular.

>>9993685
Get a medium weight fabric with minimal to no stretch. Good news is, these costumes are going to be a lot of straight lines/rectangles that get cinched in with a belt.

Shoulders will need a bit of fiddling, so get ready to make some paper mockups/do a proper toile from a similar weight fabric, but if you interface them they should hold their shape.

Look in to applique for the sleeves/chest emblem.

As for fabric choices, that's entirely up to you. It's your costume, choose what you think looks best.

>>9993532
It's jojo so most fabric choices are valid. When a friend and I made Gyro for him we used a sateen. You don't want anything heavy weight because turning all the strips on the front can be a bitch.

If this is a one-time wear for Halloween, use a cheap cotton fabric. I've made adequately convincing distressed reaper robes from a thrift store bedsheet for <$5.

If you're planning dumping money into this for multiple wears, use linen. You'll need to dye the linen (liquid RIT dye is a go-to brand).

For creating the damage on natural fabrics (cottons and linens both fall under this)
>get some slightly dulled scissors and hack randomly at the hem
>use a razor/sandpaper to run over random patches of the robe and shred/distress the fabric
>dilute black/brown paint and splash it along the frayed edges to give it a grimy look

>> No.9994680

>>9992452
Shampooing is intended to clean oils off of natural hair, so it's not something you'd need to do for a wig. After soaking a wig in fabric softener, I usually give it a gentle rinse in a filled bucket (not running it under water, which might force tangles into the fibers) before letting it dry.

>>9994144
For lighter horns, I also like a wire core with aluminium foil formed around it (just slightly smaller than you want the actual horns to be), then finishing the outside with a layer of air dry clay.

>> No.9994701

>>9994614
Polyesters aren't always the nicest, but they burn well and can be sealed with heat/fire, so I'd suggest a mid-weight fabric that's at least 80% poly. No direct fabric suggestions, but your local fabric store should have labels on fabric content and you can always as a clerk there.

Otherwise >>9994672 has some fantastic advice.

Pieces laying flat on a surface, can held at about 60-degrees (as close to vertical as I can get it), 1-2 feet from the pieces. Start the spray off the pieces, then sweep back and forth.

Thinking that it /was/ an end-of-the-can problem - switched to a new can and the spray is a lot smoother. I should have switched out when I saw uneven spluttering globs landing on the pieces, but my cheap ass wanted to keep milking it to the end.

>> No.9995376

>>9995349
Oh, you want to be closer than that, you want to be 6-8 inches away. Maybe a bit of both. Also, if you aren't heating the can, you should, it results in a noticeably finer spray. Just put it in some hot (NOT BOILING) water for 5-10 minutes.

So I have a bit of a problem. This method https://youtu.be/7cORtVpbSnk (forming Worbla over a mannequin, coating it in xtc 3d, painting it, spraying it with appliance epoxy) seems to be the most viable way of making my character's armor. There's only one problem. My character has a prominent zipper running right down the middle of his breastplate.
I'm pretty committed to this method, I have almost all the materials, but I cannot figure out how I would install a zipper, functional or not, without getting epoxy and paint on it. I've cast epoxy for a few years now and know it doesn't really stay where you put it on a surface, so I'm scared masking it off is out of the question, and I know it'll be a lot harder to cut into it once it's fully coated and painted

Need some sewing advice.

For the yellow stripes, I assume I would use yellow bias tape to cover the seams. I can't find any tutorials online for using bias tape on the outside to cover a seam however. The "hong kong finish" technique with the tape would split the tape into two pieces, rather than one smooth piece covering the entire seam. Does anyone know what technique I would use here?

>> No.9995735

>>9995485
>>9995498
Agreed, I wouldn't use it for a hilt. It sturdy up to a point but it has zero give, so if the blade end has any weight to it, the insulation foam will just snap. EVA foam is easier to put over a center support, and it can flex when you swing your weapon around as you walk/pose/whatever

>>9995722
Literally just pin the bias tape over the places you want them and sew it down before attaching your lining. On that sleeve, the seam would be on the underside of the arm, not on the outside where that yellow is, so you could add it before closing it up. As for the bodysuit top/pants you would assemble the entire outer pieces like usual, but don't finish your hems or line it until you have pinned the bias tape on and sewn it down. Take into account you'll have to fold it in just like your other allowances on the armpit or wherever else. It sucks trying to push a near finished garment through a sewing machine, but go slow and you can still attach it. If you're getting pricked too much, first pin it, then baste it with large hand stitches, pull your pins out, and then do the machine stitching.
