I'll be real with you, I wanted so badly to give concrit directly on her thread, but I just stared at the screen for the longest time finding more and more wrong things.

I thought I'd drop a simple "the fit looks bad, maybe start with learning how to draft or use a commercial pattern". Then I looked closer and all the lace and shiny satin was crap and I thought maybe I should also add "use better materials, chose something desaturated and stay away from bright colours". But wtf is that front lace up design, maybe I should also tell her "don't copy anime, look at actual lolita dresses and pay careful attention to detail." And then it hit me. She had on a blouse underneath that wasn't pressed, wtf is that crumpled collar, wtf is that bunching under the shoulder straps, are the buttons unevenly spaced or is the blouse bunched up in front because of bad fit? How do I even fix this? How do I tell her to throw it in a fire and start over because there's no saving any of that? How do I gently word "oh honey your girlfriend kinda sucks, really badly, and she should start over from scratch, and maybe try harder to make actual real clothes instead of thinking lolita is some kind of costume play where as long as you have fun then people give you asspats and tell you your shitty construction is an awesome fairy dress and then you play believe".

........Yeah. So. In the end I just kinda closed the window and let other girls tell her about how crappy their own first dress was. There's nothing you can do for the whole outfit except trash it all and start over, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to say that diplomatically.

No idea why it was at 7 upvotes when I saw it though. That was before other girls started commenting about their own terrible first dresses.

This actually is kind of cute, but this is the only time I've ever seen it look decent, and this is in the hands of a highly skilled dressmaker using OnS or some other good source. For first-time homemade dress-makers: start with a solid color or a nice simple floral, and work your way into these busy, loud prints.

Even better, it's an old taobao brand, now defunct. Dates from Qutieland era. So they definitely knew what they were doing with that print. I seem to remember there should have been at least one more jsk being sold (in addition to this Magic Tea Party version), but the photos are probably long gone by now.


Although, I feel like the loudness of the print is only half the equation. You never really see the itas trying to use it in a simple cut with matching harmonious colours, it's always girls who think bright pink and bright mint would be awesome, and they never pick a simple dress cut, if it's not front corset lacing it's going to be bustle skirts or aprons or princess sleeves or some other super special feature on top of not even making a properly fitted dress. Like jeez, half the battle would be won if they just stuck to making a simple retro dress cut that actually fit, instead of wasting time trying to be special. I don't even know why they pull this shit on their "first lolita dress". Just make a plain dress that fits as your first dress, there's time to add the kitchen sink later when you're sure you aren't going to fuck up something as basic as the dress actually fitting your body.

Sorry, I'm ranting a lot. I just get very annoyed that people somehow think making lolita dresses is an excuse to cut corners and foist their regretsy-level shit on us.

Confession time: I used this print on an early jsk attempt and I did just what OP did--I thought it would be a good idea to try to match that mint blue frosting in a contrast solid. Big mistake. Poor fabric print choice is consistently one of the glaring mistakes in handmade lolita. I agree— go with a demure floral, it’s your safest bet. It’s also too much effort for most people and requires a certain amount of skill that people who buy “harajuku lolita cosplay” patterns from McCalls/Simplicity generally don’t have. I started out lolifying commercial patterns too and they usually need so many alterations to be lolita that you might as well buy a volume of ONS and just size everything up as necessary. I bought that one lolita/rockabilly Simplicity pattern and literally every pattern piece needed to be either altered or scrapped altogether. I ended up only really using the skirt and a siginificantly altered bodice. Hey, at least I bought it on sale!

One thing I find funny about the itas who use these patterns is how often they stick to the same tacky motifs and color combinations as on the envelope. It makes them even easier to recognize.
