Has this ever happened to someone else? This is the first time I've ever had someone take a listing meant for me and my proxy, and am a bit appalled the seller is allowing this to happen to as I've always thought the items goes to who they consent to in the comments.

I follow a japanese guy on instagram that does full on custom anime embroidery. He does it all himself on some vintage machine and he's insanely good, so I assume his prices must be pretty steep. Either way, it's at least a great source of inspiration, even if you can't afford to commission him. He goes by Shishumania, at least both on instagram and his own website, if I'm not mistaken.

No, it was the half-assed mirroring in the bottom bag. The top bag is lighter on content, but every piece of merch matches perfectly, so it feels organized. The bottom bag has some matching merch, some semi-matching merch (same style, different set), and some that doesn't match at all.

I recently missed out on a rare item that got re relaeased, and I cannot begin to describe how salty I am about it.
I’ve been trying to stop compulsively buying but of course when I stop myself and wait the item is sold out completely. I heard about people buying multiples of the damn item, like I can get doing it for a bag or something but I know for a fact people are buying just to scalp the shit out of them later.

I was thinking the same thing. A BNHA group that I’m part of was freaking out about the nendos getting a limited rerelease, and a couple of people were buying 3 of each the characters. And were looking for other places to buy off of when they reached the max limited to purchase off of amiami. Most of the fanmerch I personally use is as an accent since the series I'm currently working on has barely any official merch, once again I don't see the problem since I bought it and I'm not doing a series like love live or boku no hero or something that has a ton of official merch

Not sure if you'd consider these figures, but I have a bag of mostly little hangers that I just removed the keyrings from. I tried fishing line at first, but it would get loose and they'd fall out of place. I ended up testing some hot glue on the back of them to make sure it wouldn't cause damage and glued two pins onto each and stuck them to corkboard since it was the only thing strong enough to support their weight.

I've thought about this a lot myself. Some things I haven't seen mentioned yet:
>how to put cards and stickers in bags, trimming down/dealing with tacky white edges on stickers
>the basics of making an insert, what materials to use, what fabrics to avoid
>pinning from behind that bag/fabic
>handy tools to have, ie curved safety pins, a pair of pliers or 2 to take keychains and clasps off things, extra jump rings for those charms that just come on a ball chain and need a ring to pin through
>how to actually take chains off as mentioned above, how it doesn't ruin merch, just store them somewhere in case you want to resell or such
>how to find a jp char/series names online to copy+paste for better searching

Seconding a lot of stuff already mentioned, esp patience, saving/budgeting, avoiding bootlegs, and the fact that bags are a shrine to shit you really love.

I'd elaborate more on the little/no merch problem: tell them about wackybuttons, commissioning people for art to make into merch, using things associated with a character, etc.

People mentioned the differences between itabags and conbags, I personally think just explaing what is and isn't an itabag is a lot simpler:

Also the best way I've thought of to explain what's acceptable as an itabag theme is that it must be specific and cohesive. "Anime" and "enamel pins" are neither of these. "Things I like might be specific, but it's not going to be cohesive. Characters, ships, ensembles, shows, series, and characters voiced by a certain seiyuu all fit. Genres also fit as long as they're contained to on medium, 'horror' would be too broad, but 'horror movies' could work, even more so if you narrow it from there based on time period, country of origin, etc.

Just fell in love with a new character and wanted to make a bag, the series is pretty popular so I thought of course there's tons of nice merch and all, checked out what there is and everything is shit. I know the name of the merch, I've searched for it on other sites, I've reverse-image searched the seller's photo. The only place I can find it is Otamart. It was a limited edition Comiket exclusive two years ago so if Otamart is where the seller listed it, it's probably not going to be anywhere else. The only reason I asked is because I assumed Otamart itself was a proxy given there's only an option to buy via one. Since that's not the case, I'll just find a different proxy to buy it for me.

If the item is that important to you, you can afford to shell out for a proxy that can buy it.

As stated previously, sites like otamart and mercari basically have user run stores - think storenvy or depop. The reason it's difficult to buy from them is they usually require direct interaction with a seller (who often don't like dealing with proxies or if you are a foreigner, the may not want to sell if you don't have the proper etiquette). Because of the time it takes to purchase items on otamart, many proxies don't like to deal with otamart seller (or they are simply blocked).

So, your best option is to just try other proxies until you find one who can purchase the item. Try to look for smaller services who are lesser known and less likely to be blocked by the system.
