I get the hype and I get the hate. I only got into lolita recently so I distinctly remember everything about my initial impression of holy lantern - the print is just so perfect. Understated but spaced out well, edgy enough for alternative fashion lovers but kept its kitschy lolita vibe. There's a cut for everyone. Now, there's a color for everyone. Try straight under chin without crossing them behind your neck, coukd help.

Also I usually fold the bottom of cheap eBay berets to avoid the chef's hat look and then put them in my head. It takes only few pins to get them stay on in wind etc.

for lolita blouses I'm scared the sleeves being too short, is there any brands that people recommend for them generally being on the longer side? (or brands to stay away from) thanks.

>> No.9975905

>>9975901
Moitie and VM's long sleeves are longer than other brands', at least from what I've seen. They're about 65cm or so, unlike many other brands that offer 59-62cm long sleeves. Depending on the sleeve length and the details at the end of said sleeve (or lack thereof), you can also wear wrist cuffs to make the sleeves look longer. I do this with some of my long sleeved pieces and I'm not even tall.

Baby has released watches in the past that are pretty cute (the left one is easier to find that the right); you can also use these designs as inspiration as to what designs would work with lolita and look for a similar watch elsewhere, assuming these appeal to you. If you can't find one that perfectly works with lolita and your taste, at the very least you can hide whichever one you do have under wrist cuffs or long sleeves so it doesn't bring down your coord, and you can "uncover" it when you need to look at the time.

I have some questions about oldschool!
1. Is it ok to wear oldschool without a wig? most of the pictures I've seen they just have nicely styled natural hair unless they're wearing the ringlet wig.
2. Are there slightly different rules for oldschool that allow visible bloomers and wearing opaque black tights because they did it back then? how much should old images be referenced?

>> No.9976799

>>9976798
1. Yes! It’s a matter of preference, but I personally find that appropriately styled clean hair will look a million times better than a (most likely too modern or artificial looking) wig with old school. There are tons of hairstyle ideas in old issues of GLB, that’s where I found inspiration for when I had short hair and wanted to avoid wigs.
2. Same here, depends on how “experimental” you want to go with your styling. If you’re just getting into old school, I suggest sticking to basic rules of the fashion while referencing older brand ads or more conventional looking street snaps. After a while you should naturally develop your style and get a feel for what’s right. I’d say visible bloomers and plain tights are as much of a widely accepted norm as a rectangle headdress.
Sorry for such vague answers, I hope this was at least a little helpful.

>Is it ok to wear oldschool without a wig?
Not only is it okay, imo it's highly encouraged. Honestly this is a no-brainer, you said yourself that most pics you've seen had natural hair.
>Are there slightly different rules for oldschool
Not really, unless you count the petticoat "rule" because some old school pieces aren't meant to accommodate a lot of volume (if any at all), so petticoats are sometimes smaller than what you typically see today, if they're worn at all. Also, technically you can have peeking bloomers in modern lolita too, it's not an exclusively old school thing, you just need to know how to make it look good to do it. Also who said that there's a rule against wearing black tights in modern lolita? You seem a bit confused.
>how much should old images be referenced?
There's no set rule of thumb here - If you want to imitate the "authentic" old school aesthetic then you should at the very least look at old school street snaps and photoshoots to get a better idea of the era and its different looks and trends. I think it's okay to use them as inspiration and reference as well, if you feel that you need it or if it works better for you, but it's not necessarily a requirement.

How fat are you/is it a bust issue? Many brand coats will accommodate a 90cm bust easily - they seem to run in the 94-98cm range which is fine with a couple of layers underneath unless you're wearing like...layers of velvet or something, or if it's cold enough that you need an actual winter jacket (in which case it's usually too cold to wear lolita and you'd probably be in snow boots, multiple thermal layers etc). If it's due to being plus size, then look for the "vintage inspired" brands - most will be better suited to classic/gothic rather than sweet, unfortunately, or you'll have to do modifications such as adding fur/bows yourself.

most of the brand coats I have are about 98cm. I'm not fat, but I am tall and therefore "plus-sized" in lolita, but I don't have many issues with coats. Plus, the dresses aren't meant to be stretched to the max. shirring is a design element, as well as adding some ease of measurements, but it's not supposed to look completely stretched out. It's generally considered rude to offer to buy things that aren't for sale, if this is what you mean. Sometimes girls agree to it because they've considered selling the piece anyway and offering them a good price will convince them to sell, but again, it's generally considered rude.

>> No.9977228

Honestly, yeah that's rather rude, annoying and kinda weird? I mean if you don't have a sales post up and someone looks at your pics and goes like " i want that" and decides to harass you to sell it, its kinda weird? Like, not all of us are wearing lolita to resell. We have collections, treasured pieces, pieces we hunted down for years.

If you really want a dress, go get it the same way, hunt all sites, post a WTB and put up a really high price, wait for someone to bite. You aren't entitled to limited pieces just because you have money up your ass, and that attitude makes me not want to sell to you even more.

It's even more annoying if you just won the auction or bought it on LM days before. Like why would I want to give it to you? I'd rather keep it forever, and make my money back working.

>> No.9977240

>>9977220

Alright, thank you.
I didn't mean harassing a person into selling it to me, just sending a message saying I saw their post x months/years ago and wondered if they'd be interested in selling it for a good price or saying that if they'd be ever up to sell it, I would offer a high amount or something along the lines. If they refuse, that would be completely fine. And yes, I know people aren't wearing it to resell? I have treasured pieced and things I hunted down for years too. But I thought giving it a try will hurt nobody.
I already did all of the things you mentioned (except for the high price wtb because I'm afraid it will only stir up dumb drama or will be seen as flaunting money) and wondered if just straight up asking would be an option too. For example, some people own certain pieced for years but have never worn them because they don't fit into it. I wondered if they'd be more willing to let it go if someone would offer them a very high price.
>it's even more annoying if you just won the auction or bought it on LM days before
I wouldn't do that. I'm talking about things they bought years ago.

I’m more worried about this line in your comment
>Can one bend the rules for a Sanrio event

Never sacrifice looking good for any kind of fandom. The minute you start justifying using cheap tacky shit instead of good quality items “because it’s a Sanrio event”, you’re an ita. The only real rule is, you have to look good. If you look like shit, then you look like shit. You could plaster “IT’S A SANRIO EVENT” on all your photos, shout it on the rooftop, make the photographers write it everytime they post, and you’d still get laughed at for looking bad if you simply look bad. Whether or not it’s a Sanrio event has no bearing on whether you look good or not.

As for wigs, itas just make a lot of lazy mistakes with them.
1. Never go cheap. Try the cosplay thread for recommendations, if necessary then learn to taobao and read reviews. Don’t just order shiny shit off Amazon/Ali.
2. Learn how to style, trim, wear and maintain your wigs. Frizzy flywaway hair and wigs falling off isn’t kawaii. Use the cosplay threads.
3. Coord extra carefully. Don’t do dumb stuff like match a minty pale dress with a bright green wig, and don’t pick a wig that blends too much into your dress. You’re 30% skintone and 70% artificial colouring by this point, it’s extra important to make sure all that colours work together.
4. Actually have a good coord. If you wear Bodyline without a petti but have a nice wig then yeah, that’s automatically ita. Get a good coord first, then get a good wig. Not the other way around.

It's easier to make a dress adjustable with shirring than a coat. Given that most of the larger-busted and taller girls are still outliers when it comes to lolita (because the majority of lolitas who are buying from brands are the Japanese and Chinese girls) there has never been a good financial reason for brands to make larger coats.

When will lolita brands start releasing winter coats for the year? Haven't been able to find anything I like secondhand yet.

>> No.9978027

Hi there, English is not my first language, so sorry in advance for any mistakes!

I've been fond of lolita fashion for a few years now and decided to finally try it out myself
So I got a few questions about the topic and I hope you guys can help me out.

What are common rookie mistakes?

I'm very tall (like 6“0), is there anything I should pay close attention to?

How do you wash your dresses/blouses etc? A while ago I read a thread about washing brand but in the end everyone had different opinions and now I'm none the wiser

I have a fairly large bust size, so what kind of bra would you recommend? Minimizer or even a good sportsbra? Terribly afraid of boobloaf

How often to you wear lolita? Every day, only on weekends or meet ups? And also how do you muster up the courage to go outside? I'm a former cosplayer so I'm not completely unfamiliar to weird side eyes or annoying comments, but I feel like I got more shy over the years.

I know those are very stupid questions, but I'm thankful for any help!

Far right looks like socks to me but you do you, these coords are cute. It definitely looks better with oldschool gothic than with sweet or classic. If your coord isn't just right it's going to look super cheap though

>What are common rookie mistakes?
Wasting money by buying from shady places/sellers (eBay, Amazon, Aliexpress, Milanoo and their ilk); thinking that lolita is cosplay and treating it as such with an "everything goes" attitude (i.e. "it's lolita if I say it is", wearing cosplay accessories with lolita, putting together fandom coords or themed coords before having a solid grasp on the fashion, etc.); having no sense of aesthetic, fit, or color; not wearing makeup or wearing terrible makeup; not styling their hair or wigs; buying garbage costume wigs before any actual essentials in the fashion... newbie mistakes are too broad to cover in one post, honestly.
>I'm very tall (like 6“0), is there anything I should pay close attention to?
Watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHMpXGg8-HI It covers pretty much everything you should know. Remember to turn on subtitles.
>How do you wash your dresses/blouses etc?
Really depends on the piece since some do need to be dry cleaned, but personally I wash all my garments in the washing machine on a gentle cycle and they turn out just fine.
>I have a fairly large bust size, so what kind of bra would you recommend?
Define "fairly large"? I'm not in favor of binding your boobs to force yourself to fit in garments that are too small for you, that's never a good look. That said, if minimizers give you enough support and make your bust look good then by all means, wear one.
>How often to you wear lolita?
Every day, sometimes indoors too if I feel like it. The only normie clothes I have are the ones I sleep in.
>how do you muster up the courage to go outside?
I prioritize my love for wearing the fashion above people's opinions of me. Otherwise, I fake my confidence. Seriously. It sounds like bullshit but it isn't, and while it CAN be difficult, whenever I pass by my reflection I get a reminder that I look cute as hell and have nothing to fear.
I hope this helps even a little bit!

I agree with everything anon said but one thing: I've never had problems with buying stuff from AliExpress. It's actually a good platform for a beginner to buy some basics like blouses or some indie brand JSKs. Of course you won't find brand pieces there though, but it's comfier to handle than the second hand platforms Lacemarket, closetchild, mercari etc. at first. As long as you check previous reviews of your seller/item (which you should do no matter where you buy anyway) you should be okay.

>> No.9978960

>>9978958
You can use the same argument for eBay and Amazon sellers, reviews don't mean shit when normies without standards are abounds. The only instances when it's fine is if we're talking about Chinese brands that have their own stores on AliExpress, like Infanta. Otherwise, most newbies can't tell what is and isn't good quality, or even what is and isn't lolita, so they're prone to making mistakes on sites like these.

I built myself a rack like pic related which hangs in my wardrobe.

Basically, buy a few kitchen roles/paper towels and whatever fabric you like. Sew a tube the size of the kitchen role, put it in the tube and pull a band through the hole of the role from which it can hang later. Then just tuck the leftover fabric from the sides into the hole. Decorate it with bows of whatever else and done!
Super easy and cheap, but looks pretty.

Hello, I'm a newbie who wants to get into otome kei. I just bought my first dress and I was wondering, what would be the best petticoat to buy for it? It's a long dress, 100cm starting from the waist. I read that a chiffon petti is recommended, but I'm worried about too much poof since from what I understand otome isn't as poofy as lolita. I also wanted an A line and I'm not sure how to achieve it with this length. Can anybody give me some tips?

Otome dresses don't always need petticoats, one of the big differences is they have a lot more variety in their skirts while a lolita skirt is pretty standard.

Get the dress in and try it on first, if it doesn't look misshapen around your hips/knees then you're fine to wear it without a petti.

If you do still need a petticoat, some of the taobao shops like Aurora & Ariel, Classic Puppets make "daily A-line" petticoats that are lower poof. If you need even less poof than that, stick a wide lolita skirt underneath it, sometimes that's enough to make the skirt not look completely dead.

Tenso isn't a shopping service, it's a forwarding service. When you sign up with them they give you a Japanese address that you can send the stuff you buy to, which they ship to you. They don't have any direct interaction with sellers.

I always use Zenmarket for Rakuten.
They have a cheap fee but sometimes they are a bit slow when they have to buy from Rakuten.
FromJapanis a little faster but more expensive.
Buyee is super fast and easy to use but they also have expensive fees & if you live in a country that charges customs fees, you won't be able to mark your package down.
I also use Tenso, but only for Wunderwelt packages so I can quickly order before it sells out and then mark the package down.
Hope this helps.

How much smaller than an item's listed measurements should you be? 2cm? 5cm? If something is a 92cm bust, what is the max bust measurement to comfortably fit that? 90cm? 85cm?

>> No.9983346

>>9983199
I'd say about 4-5cm minimum is enough. If the garment has buttons down the front it's good to have more of a difference to make sure you don't have any awkward gaping.

>> No.9983350

>>9983199
It depends on the cut and the layers you wear underneath, bust measurement is not the only thing to worry about but also your overall shape vs the cut of the garment. If you have a larger ribcage you need to take that into account as well as most jfashion items are cut for an overall more petite frame, there can be variable space for boobs between items and often size flexibility is only back shirring rather than the additional length and shape required for boobs, broader/taller frames etc. For example I can wear some older Angelic Pretty with 88-90cm bust although my bust is only 81, because the cut is quite flat on the chest. I boobloaf in some IW because the bodice is cut so flat, even though it says bust 85cm. And I have had to sell a dress with bust of 85cm as it looked baggy on my chest even when I tightened the corset lacing. In general you want wearing ease to be 1-2" for a closer fit and 2-4" for "fitted but more relaxed", wearing a garment that is exactly your size may make it tricky to zip up and breathe if the measurements are 100% accurate

If you're just designing, not making them, it's nice to get some artbooks / costume books for reference, as well as historical clothing books.

Studying fashion evolution, understanding how costumes are made and watching some videos about sewing might help you start thinking designs that work.

I find it easier to draw and plan using a tablet and a computer, but if you don't have these, stick to paper and pencil.

Also, go get some online courses as an introduction to the mindset of costume designing. I'm almost sure that ctrl + paint has one of those.

I bought a AATP dress which has an odd skirt length of 53 cm. All my petticoats are 45cm long. Would it be worth ordering a new 50cm petticoat to wear with the dress?

>> No.9986072

>>9986067
It's not really an odd length, to be fair, and having 3cm difference between your petticoat and dress is way too little.
Did you try the dress on with the petticoats you have? Imo it should look just fine, and if all your pettis are visibly too short try wearing them lower on your waist to see if that fixes it. If there's really no way to make your pettis look good with this dress, then you should consider buying a new petti; I highly doubt it's necessary though.
