Well, you tell them that these dresses are more "lolita inspired cosplay" rather than actual lolita, and you either gently hint or straight up say that a well constructed dress will flatter them a lot more. Comment sandwiches help a lot in cases like this. They won't necessarily take this advice but when you do this you come across as trying to help so the chances of shit flinging are minimized.

With some of the girls who obviously mixed up cosplay and lolita, this would be easy, but with fatties wearing cosplay-ish lolita, there’s pretty even odds they link you to some actual, legit oldschool lolita that might not even look that great, but it’s still burando (or maybe even Marble), and then explain they had to use a cosplay site to buy a dress that “looks like” the brand dress they actually wanted.

Generally there ends up being multiple issues to address, only the first of which is “don’t buy dresses off Milanoo/Amazon/Aliexpress/cosplay sites”. Another is that not all brand looks are good to be copied, any brand collab with anime/manga is immediately suspect, not matter how you feel about the anime/manga, which is the part where you might end up having to explain that cosplay isn’t lolita even if btssb has done a Celeste Danganronpa collab, or alternately you end up having to explain both (a) not all oldschool still looks good today, and (b) exactly how an oldschool dress differs vastly from the cosplay dress they ended up receiving from the cosplay site. And then the last issue always ends up with requesting places to buy clothes for plus sizes, and most of those sites (for the really large girls) have their own issues.

I think just leaving a note about cosplay is downplaying the actual problem, but I guess it’s the easier route rather than having to explain all of that?
