It's a probably the majoy con in the city, but it's like a giant vendor's hall more than anything. The panels are normally boring because we never get any big names coming in. If you want to cosplay, support an attending artist, buy a lot of overpriced merch or meet a specific guest it's well worth it. If you're looking for rowdy panels, con parties and exclusive con content there's no such thing.

I like really good skits (which are very rare) but i'm sort of over them as a requirement in high level comps. At the end of the day, being able to make costumes doesn't automatically make someone capable of acting/performing, and I feel it's a little unfair to have skits as a judging criteria when there are more external factors that influence people's ability to perform well than there are in just crafting.

Like, if someone performs and they're highly athletic and can leap and flip all over the stage it's going to look more impressive as a skit when that's just... not possible for most people to do. Same with some people having access/experience in audio and visual aspects which isn't available for everyone. Having it just be craft based levels the playing field and i'd be interested to see that.

In all honesty i'm really biased because I'm very much over fight skits- They have to be absolutely incredible to be impressive anymore. A good example is last year's WCS winners (Team China).
If you want to do a fight scene try and add something else into the mix so it isn't purely fight choreo. Try and come up with something innovative that will impress the audience- Also make sure your audio is clean and well put together. And for any fighting parts, practice the ever living shit out of them so they're super clean and in time, it makes a HUGE difference on the impact of the whole skit to the audience.

It's stupid that his photo will win over that amazing Tracer one. The main part of the competition will be voted by Madman judges. Which will also get the first prize.
Madman knew public votes could be manipulated which is why they put together the competition like that.
The volk photo could be easily beaten if a cosplayer more popular than Nichameleon shared it.

I mean, even if people were voting for the best photo, they’d still pick the one with the best post-processing over any photo that showed better photography techniques. I never enjoy cons all that much (maybe because I'm usually exhibiting and not just going chill and having fun) but I've been thinking of going to something as a photographer.

I haven't shot cosplay before but it'd probably work great with the fruity light painting shit I usually do (although I need dark for that so I'd just be taking regular portraits at the con itself).
I am a general purpose nerd so the event doesn't matter that much but I don't know where to go.

His painting leaves A LOT to be desired as well. I watched him paint an amulet at a show once for a crowd, it was like watching a toddler do finger painting. I don't mean that to offend him, but the end result was the same. No washes, no recessing to give it that "Comic" look that so many of his costumes rely on. No drybrushing for highlighting. My friend is a proper seamstress and she tells me that she’s honestly sick of pandering to his whining requests. From what she tells me, he only talks to her when he wants to know how to do something, then the minute she tells him how to do it he makes it into a tutorial, sells it and claims it as his own. I still remember the widespread stories of Sean Sunday, would sign up for cosplay building classes, then rip off the material to run his own classes or sell kits. He's tried to get in good with paint companies, despite the fact he's a garbage painter.

The best was when he turned up in the cosplayers market selling SW costumes, got called out for the fact he was just importing them from a retail website and marking them up while representing that he had some part in making them. Was a good ban to watch happen.

I feel like his attitude in entering these competitions is kind of like a slap in the face for other entrants. The other people who seem to put in the slog and work hard have to really fight against his popularity and huge follower count just to get the same amount of attention, even if his costumes are slapdash and with little thought to construction and quality. Two things are weirding me out. One, his insta showed him going heeled boot shopping for Mai, but she wears ninja sock type footwear. And two, isn't Mai's bow supposed to be white? It really seems like a half-arsed job, but maybe he's so far up his ass with his WCS win that he's not taking this competition seriously. Which is kind of insulting to the other competitors.

I scoured online for quite some time to try and find a version of Mai that has a red bow on the back. Aside from this figure variation, they seem to all be exclusively white bows. Which doesn't make sense, because her obi is very detailed and she has a lot of floral patterns on the costume and bow, which seem strange to add so late in the construction (if he's adding them at all). Not experienced in importing but do know the laws for it. Importing the prop gun itself isn’t your problem, the shipper has to gain the license to import it. What you need is to care about is whether or not it’s realistic and whether is defined as a ‘children’s toy’. If it can be mistaken for a real gun in terms of shape, you actually need to apply for a license and find proper secure storage (basically a huge inlaid safe) which is a huge pain in the ass. Antique replicas, except revolvers, are exempt from this. Also, police don’t just go out to inspect houses so just owning them isn’t necessarily illegal

My best bet if you need to import would be on buying those paper craft guns from China and to not mess around it it too much. If it ain’t realistic, go nuts. And if you can make it yourself, just don’t wave it around in public and try and make it collapsible if you need to move it around.

Also, at cons, they kinda have their own rules so follow those and you shouldn’t be arrested unless there is a major killjoy wanting to fuck someone over

I have made Finn's (adventure time) demon blood sword out of wood before and it turned out awesome but i could very easily hurt someone with it if i wanted so im not sure if that means i couldn't take it in.

Not sure on current ruling, but your best bet is always to check out the guidelines on the actual convention's website, and if it doesn't specify shoot off an email and ask for clarification.
