Glowing glorious herbgarden in our camp.

And srsly fuck the guy who robbed all the gardens during the thur-fri night. I know it's all according to rules and that the umbrellas are it-stuff, but people spend an entire year planning and buying stuff for the gardening. My entire week revolves around making enough potions for our entire camp of 15 persons, so stealing the shit I prepare for 350 days is a dick move.

it's just the usual stuff that want's to paint the whole thing way too stereotypically.
Also stuff like implying that the arms are the shirt and the doublet is only covering the torso, or the wording of "solid metal breastplate". Then there is the pike that could be easily thrice as tall as you are or even more

And when you look at the picture it's way too simplified if you spent enough time with the subject, like how the style of the doublet and the pants doesn't really add up, the handle of the katzbalger, the shoes, the armor, etc.

Anyway it isn't wrong, I would even say it's a good starting point to get interested in the subject (and basically that's the purpose of the whole thing) but for me it's kind of meh...

They visited my crew a few times, also for next year you maybe wanna visit too. We Shanghaied a guy with his IT Bar and next year he is camping with us, also my IT brother specialises in massages, paid however you like as long as he is satisfied with it, and mixing cocktails (crew doctor). you are cordially invited to maybe show up if you ever step in blue again

I was part of that "siege" on the gray side. I still don't know who or why gave the call that the gate was blown open right away, as sieges always last at least fifteen minutes rules-wise. Rumor has is they bombed the gate from the inside, don't know if there's any truth to that.

Worse, some blue dudes decided to run into our camp and start fighting there. We were literally attacked in the street in front of our camp. Shortly after somebody shouted at them in German that fighting outside the battlefield was forbidden and they fucked off again. Lucky for me, too, because I had probably drunk too much to fight safely.

Loudly repairing the pallisade at night was fun though, so I'm not complaining. It even counted towards my woodworking lessons.

This year my rotte was 6 guys, myself included.
Some of them went to the blue camp a few times, we even thrown ice at the blue avatar. (one of them wanted to go fishing at the ceremonial pond)
About Kalle & Frappe, that doesn't ring a bell, were they actually half naked? because until the end of the final battle I don't think anyone from our camp were actually doing that. Also, which half?

About the weather: well, it cooled off enough so that I didn't had any big problems wearing my half plate and the waffenrock on top of it. Obviously I needed a lot of water, but it was pretty much manageable

glad you had fun, from our side it was IT fuckfest too. we didnt have the old green/blue/grey alliance, but hostility was kept in bay towards grey. blue is pretty fragmented "politically" so i dunno all details but seemingly only one big crew was at first responsible for the bombing (the guy with the IT Bar we shanghaied sold them the bombs but he didnt know what they wanted to do with it). After some time it seemed the crew was framed or setup and not really responsible and i didnt get much news after that. for fighting in the streets i give the guys the benefit of the doubt bcs it was at night, we in blue try to be OT as ok an opponent as possible (battle? cry "Lieber tot als uncool" /"better dead than uncool", refers to fighting fair and play out accordingly)

>>9960667
the ceremonial pond is IT a special business, at least i can claim that my crews siren is the only being so far that "paddled" around in the pool and wasnt sucked away (part of some ritual this year). Kalle was short for Karl-Heinz and Frappe for somethign Franz i think, only pants (not all the time but when they visited). Didnt bother to check underpants, cant remember about codpieces, not my visionfocus to be true.

>blue is pretty fragmented "politically"
in other news water is wet. I mean I'm kind of surprised that the people of that camp can agree what shade of blue is their camp.

About the ceremonial pond, yeah we know. we had BIG hooks and even alcohol to use as a bait. Nothing was done at the end because the Landsknecht camp already got more than enough complaints that we doesn't really take seriously the avatars (except the red one because we like our shoes)

About the two guys, from this description, I'm not even sure that they were from the landsknecht camp. There are a few other people who kind of dresses like us and also some who lie about being with us

>> No.9960684

>>9960680
about the shade, we have a fraction thats called deepsea blue^^. also it helps when your camps trait is being greedy, as in wanna discuss or change current shade, thats 1 copper per argument pls paid inbefore at the harbourmaster^^. helps to keep some bullshit to a minimun.

if you wanna do something with the pond i would spare the alcohol as bait and pay the circle mages with it for help with fishing, could be far more successful but no promises.

the red is better taken somewhat serious, i was next to him when we captured him at the final battle and our escort leader spoke to him and called him basically (just) the commanding officer. the avatar got angry and told him to not compare him to a mere mortal and dragged the guy with him with a neckgrip.

could be true about the 2 guys, didnt really ask them if they were part of LKL. well maybe next time i ask.

Nah, the current red is tamer than the previous one.
But there is a dark secret for every red avatar that runs deep inside them, it's a crime most horrible and I would only dare to whisper it...

Also fishing in the pond isn't about being successful or effective. It's about fun. As with most of the things we do. Like when we put in one of the landsknechts in the beauty contest. That guys nickname was fish-head and for a very good reason

Df uses "Stopp" if OT danger for your life or others around you is present, halts all game and calls SL on the scene at least (misuse leads to exclusion from the event). Usable by Players/SL.

SL use only, after "Stopp" call "Down", all persons have to get down, kneel, sit whatever. This way SL and medical helpers see (still standing) SL better and get faster to emergency site. eventually you need to clear the way for vehicles or remove requisites or backdrops if needed asap.

we were fighting for silver by a really close vote (27 vote for silver, 26 for blue) I also voted for silver because they had a way more competent leader (not just compared to blue because compared to them nearly everyone has a competent leader) and also blue fucked us over from last year with the unicorn.

Fortunately for blue silver was allied with them so no big deal. And both of them was against green, but the silver commander had enough common sense to don't command us against them until they ran out of arrows and fucks.

Also this year we got our first serious injury in the end battle, one guy needed the medics during the fight against the tribe, later that day he came back with his leg in splint and with a crutch.

But all in all the end battle was really good, I would say one of the best for us. The first part was minimal fighting and mostly positioning and pixnar-ballet but at the end we rekt a few teams for good

It were the blood wolves ("Blutwulfen") that did the bombing of the library in grey camp. The Blue One was furious and after holding a short speech (I quote: "Destroying knowledge is not the way of the blue") he whipped out a pistole and shot the leader of the blood wolves on the spot. Seeing the blue Avatar executing someone was glorious. He even made a joke about it right before his speech before the great battle.

I'm really interested in what other camps think about this guy. My tent was right next to his so we interacted quite a bit. Only specific story I remember is him getting drunk at landsknechts and missing a battle where they needed him. IT people were really angry, OT everyone had a lot of fun.

we have an actual leader each year if you mean fieldcommander, this years i have never seen before i think but he looked decent enough, more on the calm side than timotius or others.

also technically the blue is our leader now, since for the alliance with silver and the NAP with copper we somehow managed this year, copper had the condition that if blue wins the blue actually has to rule for one year (and not do nothing) which blue accepted, thats why he took the crown at the end (i know he replaced it with a tricorn but hey)

Vjkiron already answered this, but to give more details: We had one leader as well as three captains. The leader had command over the captains and could order the whole army either by himself or through his runners of which there were four. The runners were also responsible for delivering or receiving information between captains and factions and leaders. Those guys were running from place to place basically the whole time only taking breaks when there was a DOWN sign.

I met some of them the next morning and they told me (proudly) what they accomplished. All in all I can imagine it must have been a lot of fun. One of them was caught in the explosion and only bits and pieces remained of him.

It was back in the time when I was still in Blue. One of the guys had a jolly good idea to go out to the magic circle and do some magic and shit with the sole purpose of magic the shit out of some column that has the (I think) previous years winners emblem on it. We wanted to steal/destroy the copper avatars emblem from it.
Obviously we failed in doing so and with relative haste the blue avatar came out to stop us and tell us how much of a fucking idiot each and every one of us because messing with these kinds of stuff could potentionally destroy everything and he really loves as and he loves freedom but there are rules that even he has to abide and also will kill us if we continue with this moronic thing.
Then as time went by more and more avatars came to chew us out in various ways. The copper avatar was relatively calm, he just asked for the guy who had this jolly good idea, whispered something in his ear and the guy dropped dead (permanent I guess)
Who was NOT calm is the red avatar. His idea of talking us down was basically frothing in the mouth and swinging his sword in the general direction of living things. That was also the time when I fought the red avatar and survived. If we use a very loose meaning of the word "fighting". It was more of a tactically rushing forward in an opposing direction while strategically placing meatshields between me and the avatar, but whatever, it worked.

Is there any name for the method of the more 'heroic' kind of fights in Drachenfest?

Like, I know if I want to be able to out-tap everyone I can look at Amtgard/SCA combat tutorials, and if I want to learn how to fight 'like they used to'/as close and true to the origin as possible I can look up things like HEMA, Kali, Kenjutsu etc.

But what tutorials can I look for if I want to fight flashy and even if I lose, make my fights look as cool and impressive as possible? How do I practice that?

interesting with the 3 captains part, never really paid attention to command structures (well im blue duh), just knew we had an army leader, and since my captain was sturmflut leader few years ago and actively invovled in army command i never bothered to learn more. he was quite exhausted all the time, we got him to lay low in the last years and he recovered pretty good (looked nearly like he was damaging himself getting involved in far too many things at the same time even OT).

i was with them sorta the night before they moved out, and chilling at the bar (the guy who sold them the bombs). didnt hear their plans at the time though only afterwards

>>9962277
was that around 4 years ago? i remember the circle or somebody magicky was trying to unveil informations about the pillar and why are plaques missing (cant quite remember but i think blue didnt have one in a obelisk/pillar but everyone else). somehow it worked out and we got libertania or some shit like that, had other problems at the time and didnt quite follow everything.
also tactical relocating is quite the advanced combat tactic and pretty useful if deployed correct :D

on a sidenote while we a stop and i was next to the red avatar (which then took the guy with him i talked about earlier) i met the lady in the scalemail, that i asked if you knew her (iirc HLF you posted her picture) and i had a nice talk about the armor with her.

The running gag about making fun of DR is that even though its post apocolyptic zombie horror is that it has a ban on the topic of sexual violence as part of in world plot and events garnering it the reputation of a would be Hug Box Larp.

However at the same time there are multiple allegations of Pay to Play circumstances orchestrated by the Franchisee's of various chapters.

And recently, as >>9963347 There are currently a slew of allegations directed at the owners and organizers for a few franchises of sweeping actual cases of sexual assault at events under the rug. Washington is only the most recent case. Just that the people behind DR, who do other things, have partnered with Dziobak through their Imagination brand to produce a few non DR Larps. Last year they did a Road Trip larp about a music band, the roadies, groupies, reporters, & etc on a week ling road trip tour from Chicago to Vegas.

I look at their attempts to run events with Dziobak and their attempt to do something else in Utopia Descending, which I believe has far different terms of service clauses for Franchisee’s over DR as their attempt to get away from the garbage fire they themselves made.

Like, you can watch the creator jockey between his tired frustrations as he is in the midst of rewriting the lore for the new edition of the game and the timeskip, even renaming it DR Evolution to, I imagine, require new or reupped franchisee contracts to make things better and cut down on the bad sportsmanship.

to say upfront personally i dislike choreographed/theatrical fight most times.

but my 2 cents anyway (mostly for duel type fights not big battles my advice), with choreographed fights in movies dont forget
a) there are 2 (or more people who know each other beforehand that want to deliver a product) and
b) they trained that multiple times before (its scripted),

for your goal you cant forget that in LARP in most fights you didnt train with your opponent and its more "improv" which makes some things harder. also some moves might be against local rules, better check on that beforehand.

now for explicit advise, think about how you can make it worthwhile for spectators AND your opponent (guys who can tell its fun to fight with you may help with word of mouth alot). if you can talk to your opponent before the fight about it, clear some things (maybe he can perform some nice stuff or cant etc). most "real" fights (brawls more than weaponized) tend to end on the ground wrestling, some form of grappling (and maybe throwing) could be visually nice, while grappling get real close so you whisper to each other (for timing calls, tell if you throw him or he sweeps your legs now etc) also you could make it look more intense that way. generally incorporate attacks and maneuvers that telegraph your intentions so your opponent can work with it, to make them plausible to hit maybe use disorienting attacks on your opponent (stun or stagger him before a big wide swing etc), also think about "escalation of violence" as a form of story (at loss for better wording) so begin maybe with only sword, as the fight goes on maybe get out a offhand dagger or some throwing knife etc so like you getting more desperate to win and not like at the start feeling pretty confident that it would be a short fight.

as for maneuvers since you want theatrical fight you may wanna look into asian movies too, also maybe use maneuvers and stances with western weapons could make something look more fancy.

also talk loudly to your opponent before the fight (and try while fighting, maybe getting more exhausted etc) to let your audience know what stakes there are, to get them invested or show the significance of the fight (many perceived things are from gathered meta information and then projected onto fights especially if you look at movies if you get my wording)

>>9964330
did give some nice examples, i for one like the movie "(captain) alatriste" but its fights may not be as fancy as you like it.

never forget at least 2 are needed for a fight (not counting fight club here but you get the gist)
i maybe lost 1 or 2 thoughts while writing this but i hope its understandable and helps

>> No.9964647

>>9964639
yeah one thought i forgot was, if you LARP it helps IMMENSLY to find a local group with similar intentions and train with them between events (at best weekly at least monthly) that way you have opportunity to get a feel for moves, develop muscles you maybe didnt know you needed and film it to watch it back to check on your progress and what you wanna work on, since you can focus only on so many things while fighting and automating some stuff helps getting more things at once done (as in if you fighting is done subconciously you can use more think capacity on talking/ survelling the surroundings etc).

another point maybe choosing a fightlocation that you could use the environment in a good way (be careful though bcs LARP rules)

>> No.9964814

>i for one like the movie "(captain) alatriste" but its fights may not be as fancy as you like it.
captain alatriste has one of the most realistic battles and swordfights thoug in movies.

>>9964330
Here are three videos of fights that are for show BUT they also use reasonable and realistic techniques but carried out in a flashy (and not too fast) way so it looks good for spectators
Obviously all of the are choreographed and trained

i do historical fencing (western/sword&board) and japanese katori (bo/bokken/katana/naginata), i dislike over the top stuffs that is useless from my (very pragmatical) perspective. that may be the main reason i like alatriste.
i can stand other stuffs but i wont be replicating it any time soon. im not good enough yet to not use my reflexes in LARP, thats why i stay out of combat as best as possible and just do my magic stuffs.

nice videos you got there but as easy as it looks there went a few hours of training into that.

>>9964330
another thing i just remembered, when duelling you may settle a dispute and "most" of the times it would be enough to make your opponent combat ineffective or subdue him, not killing (unless you really hate him), this also helps with getting more stuff to play (since the story isnt over yet)

So guys, I'm back with more complaints: The black wool I got is not enough to make the full set of hosen out of. It's not so much a problem as I got enough wool in stock in general but I was thinking maybe you guys could help me out here...

I'm pondering on a few options;
1. Do the whole thing in a dark blue wool, which is thicker but with a rougher weaving.
2. Pic related
3. Do the "socks" in a different colour, socks here being the part below the knee.
4. Mi-parti that bitch.

The general aesthetic is for a costume based on a fantasy interpretation of late 15th century Condotterie. Rest of the costume is woolen darkgreen farsetto, floral houppelande, and a light blue chaperonne.

my hose was made from ~371 gamm/square meter wool which is kind of thick. I had no real problem with it apart from knowing it won't look as great as a little thinner wool, but on the other hand during the winter or colder nights I was VERY happy with it.
Doing the socks part in a different color is also not a real problem

There should be a re-reg option on the website for each game. Prereg for a game is open until about a week before the event. Then once you pre-reg you can generate a check in with your player number & what not so your sheet gets any needed updates and is printed before you get there.

New Players have a different process if you want to pre-reg, but new player pre-reg is one of the purchasable options on the websites.

I think NJ and Kentucy both have games this weekend.

hey i make some stuff for myself too, but didnt dabble in trousers/pants and shoes (technically anything below belt was not made by me)
just found it interesting since underpants is the only constant underwear im using, socks are weatherdependant and with my upper body garments i have no "underwear" there. also thought if you already bothering with trousers if making underwear would be much different or just like "few"(tm) minutes more work.

that was a fun thing, our eggholder didnt have enough space to hold all eggs so we just had them kinda lying there after a while

one thing i noticed, thats kinda sad, while making clothes when you are in a specific camp(blue for me), you intuitinally (if thats a word) refrain from using to many different colors that other camps have (and opting for more muted colors); maybe out of fear of getting mixed up or something like that. while it gives a kind of uniform look to camps, i think designs could profit from more color variety sometimes.

Does anyone have any experience with the Calimacil Zweihander? I've been looking for a review of it, to no avail.

Is it rigid enough to bind against swords, and deflect pikes? Is it flexible enough to be safe on both thrust and cut? Are there better options for a similar weapon? Because it looks really good.

>> No.9966173

>>9966126
just from my own LARP weapon and real weapon expierence, NO LARP weapons binds. they all feel too bouncy for me, most times for binds you need to carefully & slowly move your weapon to the other, which isnt helpful in fights. maybe you can use it to deflect weapons, but for binding meh. (may also depend on opponent and how much force he uses). rigid will be ok i think, just LARP weapons tend to be real "glidy" (and elasticly bouncy), so no effective bind will be achieved.

Also not every LARP will allow thrusts, or limit them in some capacity.

>> No.9966462

AFAIK unless specifically stated no LARP weapons made by Cali are stab safe.

>> No.9966628

I've held one once some time ago, so take this with a grain of salt:
>Not stab safe. Calimacil advertises (or at least, used to advertise) their weapons as safe for thrusting, but I've seen two Calimacil swords tear at the tip within two years of purchase.
>Binding with larp weapons is next to impossible unless both sides are intending to bind. This one isn't really any different.
>The crossguard is way too flimsy, and any blow to the crossguard won't even be slowed, let alone stopped. The horns might catch something, but the crossguard won't help you at all.

However, it looks sexy as fuck, so I say you should still buy it.

Try going for a Silberwold if you're willing to fork over a little more cash. If they still got a few swords left after ConQuest. All in all smaller weapon retailers are better, other good ones are Irregular Props, Freyhand (mainly their bollockdaggers and their polearms) and I haven't owned one myself but I heard Rustzeug makes some nasty clubs etc.

Honestly, sounds like a pretty decent idea for a low-effort larp. Anything that breaks suspension of disbelief can be dismissed as brought in by players, be it modern clothes, modern food packaging, or any strikingly modern facilities the location might have.

The obvious danger is having your players settle into bad habits. If they get used to the idea that nobody raises an eyebrow at modern things, it'll infest other larps even more than it does already.

Besides that, there's the risk of making it too hugboxy if you are to implement stuff like respawning and character-bound items.

>> No.9966837

>>9966800
Well, modern clothing items would have to be specified as specific sponsored items from “prior” to entrapment game events or things “crafted” in game through the menu system.

From the word go I want the only initial
Immersion breaker to be the phones and app which would quickly become just an aspect lf the at game culture.

In terms of the hug box, I’d just want to throw in a longer bleed out time (unless being murdered) based on whatever mechanic fuels special abilities you have unspent at the time (though shortened by how strong a hit threw you into that bleedout) and not having character bound items, but having a locker/inventory system besides open or in person theft that some thief abilities can crack.

>Is it rigid enough to bind against swords, and deflect pikes?
little better at it than the average larp weapon, and yes

> Is it flexible enough to be safe on both thrust and cut?
Not much flexibility but I'm still with those people who say flexibility while nice and dandy it's not a must have for safety. Sure, it will hit harder and everything but will give greater control over your weapon. So don't hit like a retard and you will be alright.

Saw far too many cores break through a Cali weapon, what are you talking about? Stab safe weapons require completely different building styles if you want them to last.

Spears usually have leather reinforcement around the core, or fucking kevlar in the case of Freyhand with a specific non core part for stabbing.
I don't think Cali does this. And to my knowledge most German, Dutch and English LARPs don't allow stabbing with their weapons.

>> No.9967845

>>9967841
calimacil usually use a different type of rubber around the tip which is worked into the rest of the rubber they use.

The only thing that is really needed for a stab safe weapon is something that prevents the core from damaging the padding material. This can be done in several ways and generally the longer the tip is after the end of the core the more likely it will get damaged.

> And to my knowledge most German, Dutch and English LARPs don't allow stabbing with their weapons.
What does this have to do with anything?

>> No.9968229

>>9967845
Yes and no, on the whole part that the only thing needed to keep a weapon stabsafe is just a buffer to keep it from going through. In essence it's correct but the durability of it is what's pulled into question.
>that's fucking retarded. I mean, only true in the US.

>> No.9968562

>>9968229
I only heard US guys saying calimacil weapons are not stab safe. And the fact that various countries banning stabs as a method of attack doesn't question the safety of one weapon.

I mean even the new wyvern stab safe spear that they pretty proudly advertise in germany is not allowed to be used for stabbing at the end battle of Drachenfest which is organised by Wyvern, the very producer of that weapon.

And again, my experience is that the longer calimacil weapons indeed tear up at the tip after a few years but that happened with us after heavy use with lots of stabbing. Nothing else came close to their durability so far.

>> No.9969293

"Stab safe" doesn't mean the same thing to different people. A weapon designed to be stab safe for the weapon has a flattened or rounded tip with tear protection. A weapon designed to be stab safe for the target has a coreless section at the tip that can compress or bend. A lot of this confusion comes from people not specifying which one they mean.

Calimacil weapons (except the original Agrippa) are the former form of stab safe, but not the latter.

>> No.9969659

>>9969293
>A weapon designed to be stab safe for the target has a coreless section at the tip that can compress or bend.
calimacil has that. Actually most of the tear protection nowdays works in a way that allow the tip to bend while not tearing up the padding.

What actually really differs from person to person is what counts as safe.
I was stabbed in the eye more times that I care to count with calimacil weapons, roughly twice a week I got some kind of head hit too and I'm still here shitposting on 4chan, so for me it counts as safe. BUT obviously those things could be painful and we have different trashold for this, hence why for some people it doesn't count as safe

Work-work. >>9984563 sums it up nicely. Historic medicine and surgery is one of my academic focuses.

>do you use this as temporary help and after that get modern treatment?

Its the whole treatment. Most historic medicine is pretty common sense. We have several thousand years of trial and error, and most of it is still used today. Sodium bicarbonate for stomach issues. Aspirin for pain. Antiseptic/astringent herbs. Alchohol/vinegar for cleansing. etc etc. Some meds still available over the counter haven't changed in centuries.

>which sources do you use for your recipees?
Original documents. There are literally thousands online for free. I have an 18thC kit at work, and a late 15thC/early 16thC kit for my personal historic interp, but the medicines are still similar. I'm currently working on a republic era Roman medical kit.

Vinegar is the go-to wound cleanser throughout history, and is still suggested by doctors (and grandmas) today for minor home wound care over alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. Follow that up with an waxy sealant (think beeswax based lip balm), and the wound will be "plugged".

Pic is me doing a decompressive craniectomy on a watermelon as a special program at one of our dig sites where we found surgical tools and medicine bottles.

Kind of a weird request here. Anybody know how to make a back sheath, that can also be unbelted and moved to the waist? Essentially I'd like to be able to carry the weapon on my back during everyday activities, and move it to my waist when I'm expecting a fight.

To illustrate what I mean, what Conan does at about 3:00 in this video: https://youtu.be/YH-EW44aBGU?t=175 (Apologies for the shit quality, couldn't find any better footage).

I'm not terribly concerned with historical accuracy, because the game is fantasy. Moreso just wondering if it's possible to achieve this at all.

Secondary, more realistic request: I'd like any guides you have for making a buckler from eva foam.

>> No.9985108

For the sheath, I would say it's pretty straigthforward especially if you use flexible materials or has a ring on it somewhere.

As for the buckler
>Secondary, more realistic request: I'd like any guides you have for making a buckler from eva foam.
The best course of action would be using som kind of hard backing for it if you want durability and prolonged lifetime. ABS or other plastics that can be shaped under heat works pretty well. Then just put a handle on it, and a layer of eva foam at the outside and you are mostly done just have to do the covering part which could be either latex or textile or whatever you want

Dude on the left looks good. The watch is bothersome but again, I'm assuming it's because the game hasn't started. Dude on the right has an acceptable low-effort costume with the exception of the elf ears. Only the dude in the middle looks plain bad, I completely agree on that one. Looking at the rest of the pictures from that game, I think you can do much worse. Nearly all of them at least look like they are trying, which is better than I've seen of most Amerilarps.

I think the main reason the pictures look bad is because half the people in it are overweight. I doubt they'd look good in anything other than a complete specifically tailored outfit. Not really something you can blame this specific larp for.
