I have a ton of salt about brands pandering to the Chinese market. Especially the tea parties. I don't care how nice the last AP tea party was, the Baby ones are embarrassing and both of them are nothing compared to the Chinese ones.

I am also ashamed that Western brand tea parties are always at cons. I'm not a con goer so it makes me cringe that this is how we represent jfash here, where as in Japan and China they are standalone fashion events.

So I guess it's kind of our fault too but I agree with you that the western lolita market will be the one standing later when it's no longer in, because we have more of a culture of individuality whereas they just want status fashion.

I don't think Western girls should be complaining about brands passing them over in favor of the Chinese when all the evidence goes to it just being financially logical for them. As much as we like to ignore it, they're still businesses that need to stay afloat. I don't think it's about the culture of individuality or whatever, it's mostly about the $$$. I feel like people saying "oh, it's just a status symbol to them" are just telling themselves that to make them feel better about it.

In the last few wardrobe threads, I've noticed that almost everyone says they mostly buy secondhand versus new. I'm also the only one in my lolita friend group who regularly buys new. Now, I don't have a problem with buying secondhand at all and I totally understand people's reasons for doing so (I do also buy secondhand myself), but when it comes to complaining about not being catered to by brands, it just comes off as super hypocritical. Why would you expect them to do big, Shanghai-style tea parties in the West when girls here are just gonna bitch about the price of the ticket? It doesn't make sense to keep whining about the Chinese when the Western community barely even actually supports the brands in comparison.

I guess this is one of the main things I'm salty about.

Why can't people just wear clothes that fit? This isn't even only about fatty-chans. I'm just so sick of seeing people wearing things with gaping buttons, puckering around the waist, and that are too damn short. Somehow with normie clothes, people generally know that if something fits, you either get it tailored or you don't wear it at all. I don't understand why this isn't the case for lolita. It's just so baffling that someone in a dress that's ridden up several inches up from where it's supposed to hit will still walk out of the house like that instead of selling that shit and buying a damn dress that actually fucking fits. This is still a fashion, it's not like the whole concept of fit goes out the window as soon as something is ~alternative~

>> No.9948168

>>9948158
Wtf am I looking at???
Also I think it's because normie clothes tend to be pretty generic. If you want a pink T shirt, but shop A doesn't have your size, it's relatively easy to go to shop B and find a bigger pink T shirt. However, lolita places a lot of emphasis on print (especially in sweet, which plus size lolitas tend to gravitate toward). Prints are impossible to find in larger sizes, and there's a stigma against altering brand, so for people too big to fit a printed JSK, the only options are to either not wear it, or stuff yourself into it like a frilly sausage.

I can also sympathize with how much it sucks when you're really excited about a piece but it doesn't end up fitting you. That's still no excuse to pull shit like pic related, though. If something doesn't fit, find something that does.

I'm not even particularly thin but at least everything I wear fits (and by fits, I mean it actually fits correctly and not just that I can technically squeeze into it without it ripping). Obviously you need experience with organising a big event beforehand... The first Hellocon had Japanese brand vendors and Lolita∞Complex which can be more difficult than a fashion guest because of the technical side of having a music act. The first SFE event had several Japanese guests and vendors (Atelier Pierrot, Juliette et Justine, Fairywish, Grimoire). And those events were both organised in countries where there's no lolita shop (in America you could start by contacting the English speaking staff of shops that sell lolita).

What you definitely don't need is a defeatist attitude. Those people didn't spend years trying to befriend the designer of Atelier Pierrot, they probably just had professional experience already and knew how to contact them.

That's true. But it's a fact organizing events is not easy and definitely not something every lolita is capable of without experience. Also, some guests require knowledge both in event planning and handling lolita spesific guests. It's just one reason why America might not have lolita spesific conventions. Other one could be events in Europe are generally more often organized by non-profit organisations rather than companies which makes it possible to get discounts, sponsors and forwarding the event to new people when needed without extra hussle. But imo the it has probably to do most with the work load and resposibility. I think starting small is still a good option.

This part always bothered me. What's the ticket price for the average American burando tea party anyhow?

I've seen the ticket price for AP's Tokyo tea parties at 16-20k yen, which puts it somewhere in the $160-$200 ballpark. I think I could accept paper cups if the tickets were like $50-80, but if it cost $160 I'd definitely expect proper cutlery.

That came across backwards, I suppose. What I meant was, given that a nice tea party is $160-200 in Tokyo -- but going by the afterparty reports, this $160-200 Tokyo tea party ticket buys you not only a nice sit-down dinner with real cutlery, but also includes being at a nice hotel, a fashion show with some minor/e-famous Japanese celebrities (and a chance to meet them? maybe?), door gift, lucky draw -- that's pretty cool even if it's $160-200. Tokyo is a good baseline as it's their homeground, so they're probably pretty established with what's supposed to happen at their tea parties, vs constraints with international tea parties.

What I mean was if the American tea parties also cost over $160 and you're still getting paper cups, then yeah, you're getting jipped and should be totally salty.

If the American tea parties cost a lot less than that though, I can understand the costs need to be cut somewhere -- there's already extra costs in flying out some of the designers, guests and merch overseas on top of lower ticket prices. So I guess going with paper plates and paper cups in return for keeping ticket prices down is understandable. I mean you can't really expect brands to incur extra travel and import costs flying out to you, give you a grand time, and then pay them less than half what their homeground customers pay them. This isn't just your comm going out to a local place and ordering a $30 dinner, someone has to pay for the plane tickets, reserve hotel space, prep door gifts, etc.

idk, if you're really salty about it, maybe bring it up with a group of lolitas and float the idea to the next brand tea party -- tell them to poll the group and see how many people would pay $160 if they get real cutlery and all the extras that Japanese tea parties get. At least if the group still votes for paper cups, well, it's something the cheapfags voted for and not something the brands condescendingly decided to cut corners on.

The more lolitas I meet (and the more who add me on social media), the more fed up I've gotten with how goddamn dysfunctional people are. I know so many girls who are pushing or even over 30, but both their finances and their personal lives are total disasters, which of course is accompanied with constant whining online. I'm normally sympathetic when people are having a hard time, but the snowflakery is just overwhelming and I barely even want to socialize with my comm anymore. I'm aware that people with mental illnesses and other problems tend to wear alt fashion more often, (and even though I'm not perfect either), I wish people would make a bit more of an effort to pull it together both online and at meets.

On a more petty note, why the fuck do so many American sellers refuse to ship internationally? Like I get that people might be shocked at the shipping cost, but I don't see why providing an estimate preemptively on the listing would be so hard. It's especially bad when I really want the item and am willing to pay for shipping, but they still refuse the sale. I saw some post here explaining that it's a pain to have to weigh the package, but everyone in other countries has to do that anyway too.

Also, Americans who call afternoon tea "high tea" sound retarded. I keep seeing it on CoF and I have no idea where that came from.

Because retarded eurofags buy without asking a shipping price and back out once they realize the cost. I've also had multiple instances of eurofags asking for non tracked shipping to save $ and then they magically "don't" get their item and go through PP to file a claim and I'm fucked out of an item and money.

That alone is a problem. It's just weird to see someone shaped like an oversized toddler in a full body pink or sax toy print. Nayrt but I hope you just understood it wrong and aren't that retarded.

It once was invented as underwear, yes, but nowadays many modern ones have been adapted and made to be worn on top of clothes or even as shirt itself.

Saying modern corsets have to be hidden under clothes is kinda like saying you need to wear bloomers as undies, and it's bad to use them like shorts to cover undies. If we stay old fashion, shall we immidiently make the hole in the bloomers so we can stand over the toilet and start peeing without pulling them down?

Garments change with the time, and so does their use. Get over it. We're not historical reanecment players.

Is it bad I actually do not care at all about the Chinese comm’s opinion? I get they’re currently running the market at the moment but their tastes and trends are so fundamentally different from what made me fall in love with lolita that I try to pretend they don’t exist.

I tend to be fairly private about my social media where it’s mostly people I’m friends with IRL, family, and people I like to keep in touch with long-distance (like an old favorite teacher). If we chatted a lot during a meet and hit it off great, I’m good with being friends; but the people who think that just because we’re both in lolita that we’re automatically friends now ring alarm bells in my head.

R-series delivering stuff with needles in it, cutting open the customer than getting mad like it's not their fucking problem. Soufflé Song owner being a Milanoo bitch with no manner and mediocre clothing at best. Multiple brands with huge sizing issues where their own tables are incorrect (by far). Surface Spell gothic still owning half the Chinese gothic comm clothes because she's too lazy to ship out. Krad Lanrette doing weird order methods just so Western Market has to pay double and can't use shopping service. These are the kind of stories that make me happy I have options to follow Chinese reviews 's well.

Otherwise I don't think there is a huge difference in taste. Any brand has their own style. I don't think most Chinese brand are that different from Japanese brands than the differences between Japanese brands vs other Japanese brands. They just aren't exact copies, which I like (even while some of my fab brands are Japanese). It's really the lack of knowledge about Chinese brands that I talk about. Kinda like translating any FB post, any twitter post, any tumbler post, all together. Weibo is kinda Chinese combo of all our social media.

It's also my only dislike with Chinese lolita updates on FB (I generally like them). They never mention any of the negativity of the brands, and they know quite well being Chinese and getting their photos from Weibo and TaoBao. At first they where mainly updating and seems like nice comm member doing something nice because we mis a lot (just like lolibrary, Shellolita, lacemarket, fb group moderators, etc are mainly not making much if any profit), but with them becomming a shopping service and updating us on releases, but not on much negativity when it's very relevant (like sizing issues, quality issues, not shipping out on time, etc) to said releases it feels much more commercial.

Our comm is pretty small, but this one time some random weeby girl just showed up on an fb group insisting that we should do a freakin CON for "all the lolis", like literally expecting over a hundred guests. Our biggest meet in history was something like 30 people. She knew nothing about lolita, couldn't even name 3 brands to get into our comm's group (her application got rejected), but still wanted to "promote the fashion" via an event with a 10$ ticket. When someone pointed out that it sounded like a very cheap anime con and lolita is actually more of a luxury fashion she got all huffy and defensive. Turned out that expecting people to actually participate in the fashion before they start calling themselves lolitas is nasty ELITISM and such attitude will only drive people away. Y'know, the same people who wouldn't attend an event if it costed more than 10$.

Wherever Japanese go to gossip? I've seen some blogs that where saying very opposite things of what Western comm says Japan thinks. But beside mouth to mouth and personal blogs I don't know where to look.

But considering I found a some contraditions to common Western believes about Japanese and my other Japan related interest (traditional Japanese tattoo's and Japanese tattoo culture) is rarely having good explanations, or even translations. And often they speak against each other as well. I doubt we really know all of it. Feel like we mainly only see the designers view, never the communities view.

Tbh I don't care about the communities view. It's silly to expect there to be some sort of "Japanese opinion" on things when you know they're just individuals too and we can't even agree on anything in our local comm with less than 50 people. But what the designers think is actually relevant, since we're wearing their creations.

>> No.9950730

>>9950723
I think it does matter. The designers made it, but the lolita's wear it. Without wearers, the fashion dies. They are just as important.

We care enough about Western comm opinion to define words and styles. To make a general notion of what is and isn't good. And we take over a Japanese concept in the way we understand it, which is often full of mistakes and incomplete. How come that the people who originally do it and have a much more direct view with the designers and the people who wore it before them have no say but a few Western woman who might not have any other resource than the internet do?

Honestly, saying the Japanese comm doesn't matter is kinda stupid. They will always matter because they are the direct source, and designers and magazines will always be biased in a few things. Never say negative things about themselves and colleges because professionalism. Without Japanese comm we miss a non-biased view from it's origin.

HOWEVER if he's the sort of autist who can't/won't talk to people (I remember one time I tried making polite conversation with someone's partner and he looked at me like I grew an extra head, and wouldn't talk to me: it was bizarre) then you shouldn't bring him along.

I honestly don't care what SOs wear unless it's something that requires a dress code. If it's a simple picnic/museum/casual meet, then wear anything - you can't look more out of place than we do in our frills. However if it's something that would require more effort then I would hope that they'd dress up? for coording purposes it's important to distinguish between true white and offwhite shades like ivory, but this seems like a semantic argument as "white" is a totally fine colloquial descriptor for the color this dress is.

I don't think you're actually a lolita if you think it's fine to refer to colors as an entirely different color. This is how newbies fuck up and think coording white and ivory together is fine because they're "basically the same"

I'd say yours is what could use some work cunt. Way to ignore the part of the sentence that follows up and says it's fine to call a color something completely different

I own the OP now, the color appears stark white to me desu, but I may have to observe it and a few other "white" pieces of mine under different sorts of lighting. I've been interested in the fashion for awhile, but only started collecting and coording recently, so thanks for the information! :3

The zip jsk reminds me of generic punky whorish "bustier" that's found in any bad-part-of-town sex shop, but with a floofy skirt slapped onto it. The other one with the higher waist is better, but the straps give it a weird casual look that I don't like

lurk more newfag. If AP lists it as ivory then it's ivory. their stark whites are very distinctly stark white and I have never seen a holy lantern that is. Nor have they ever put out a release image that shows シロ as the descriptor for the lightest colorway, it's always アイボリー.

>>9953326
But that's stupid? Because even in promotional images you can see when it's not filtered it's ivory. APs stock photos for ivorys often look white. Just look at twinkle sky.

Un/misinformed isn't the same as stupid. I'm absorbing all kinds of knowledge thanks to the wonderful posters like you that are all too happy to share it. The inability to retain or apply the information is what makes one stupid. The items that I've had through my life that are marked as ivory tend to be a lot darker of a cream color. Today, I learned that ivory applies to any "white" that has even a tiny pip of nonwhite in it, at all. I'm glad that you showed me that there's more to learn about the little details with color so that I make less mistakes in the future. I do thank you, but also, you're being a bit of a bitch desu. This isn't 2011, you can stop acting like you're cool with the age-old "xxx-fag" and "kys" comments. You actually look a bit like a retard. I'd say chinese and western tastes have been converging recently, but they were the original starters of the chiffon monster and million underskirt trend, pic related. I keep seeing contradicting comments on how how Chinese lolitas love OTT stuff and a million underskirts, but then people say how they're super casual?
