Should people particapating in nanchate go for a more realistic vibe with their uniforms? Or is it okay to be costumey as long as its cute?

Where is the best place to get school uniform and school uniform esk clothes?

Should seifukus classify as being apart of nanchate or does their need to be more effort put in to a nanchate coord?.

Honestly, japanese school uniform is kinda fetishy, but I wish that girls here in the west would start wearing skirts again.
I haven't seen a girl in a skirt in years, at most they were summerdresses, but besides that theyre are all wearing jeans, leggings or hotpants.

its true isnt it? If you wear a school uniform and some lad came up to you and asked which school you went to, and your reply would be "none". He would ask you if youre doing porn and will cover that up as a joke, or if hes more polite, why youre wearing it.
If youre 25, you look your age, and wear a school uniform in public, what would people possibly think if they dont know anything about jfashion? I bet the women would think that shes doing a photoshot but men which make up 50% of society uhh i dunno.

Just so you know, men approach/stare at actual school girls in uniform because of school girl porn. The uniforms themselves are not the problem, men addicted to porn are, is what I'm trying to say.
As for the public's reaction, it's possible to just say "Oh this isn't a uniform, it's a fashion style, I wear it because it's cute." If someone doesn't accept that and insists you're doing porn then it's their problem.

If men, which make up 50% of the population, see something as fetishy, wouldnt it make the clothing youre wearing to about 50% fetishy? Especially something so widespread as "school uniform". And what about the ddlg you hear about in every thread?

Just because it appears in porn doesn't mean it's inherently sexual. Or are you implying that nurses, firemen, policemen, etc. are wearing fetish gear on the job?
Ddlg is an entirely different beast and honestly bringing it up makes me think you're baiting so I'm dropping out of this inane discussion.

>> No.9882971

>>9882966
No, I wasn't implying that, because in my previous post I clearly said its somewhat a deviant clothing style, especially if youre older than school kids. Its like larping, but nurses and the like are all above the age of ~18, school kids apart from college students never are, therefore if you dress up as a nurse people will see you as a nurse, if you dress up as a pupil in school uniform, and youre clearly out of that age bracket, people will not see you as a pupil.
And youre never to decide what you are to other people, they decide that on their own and youll be treated accordingly.

>> No.9882977

>>9882971
And by that logic if people see you in ott sweet and decora they must think your an age player right? Also lets not forget that alot of the outfits you see in porn look nothing like the outfits in real life. Its not anyones fault that normies assume anything outside of their perview is some sex thing. Does this also apply to girl who look older then their age as well?

>> No.9882985

>>9882977
yes, people do see you as an age player and will ask you why youre wearing little girl dresses, you sometimes can read up on these stories in the feels threads. Girls look older from ages 12-16, but thats partly the magic of make up and sports bras. Its very rare for a girl to look 10 years older than herself if she hasnt hit menopause or was pregnant yet, which is impossible and unlikely considering that shes still in school (this is not true for super poor schools but they dont have school uniform anyway). And no i dont mind you or anyone wearing jfashion, school uniforms, gyaru, lolita or the likes because i know about them.

I feel the same way. Before I grew an ass and thicker legs from the gym I felt very cute in nanchatte but now my butt throws the whole look off and it only looks not "sexy-ish" with an oversized cardigan, which gets really hot any other time than winter

Also I'm in Japan currently and there are so many mixes of school uniforms. All the girls look cute and comfy and middle school girls have skirts that go way past their knees. I will always advocate for real looking nanchatte as those cheap looking colourful seifukus with short skirts do look costumey and fetishy. I have both styles however and wish I could wear them more often. I'm too scared to wear them outside bc normies. I may attempt a cord in the fall because like I said the cardigan look is better on me.

Also there are so many cardigans, pleated skirts, cute socks and bow ties here I'd buy it more if I could wear it outside of conventions, although I usually cosplay anyways so rip.

Do any anons here have experience wearing nanchatte in daily life?

I do not necessarily wear Japanese uniforms, yet my personal style is very preppy and definitely contains aspects of nanchatte, and school uniforms overall. I wear this on a daily basis, and it is no problem. Sometimes people comment on how girly or cutesy it looks, yet other than that it doesn't attract a lot of attention from "normies". I think that, as long as it is coordinated in a way that it looks like a genuine outfit, and not necessarily a costume, one shouldn't worry. So genuine pleated skirts instead of the costume-y ones with the awful, wrinkly fabric improve a lot already. Moreover, by wearing it a lot and thus incorporating it in your daily wear, one can become creative and add in some more casual aspects. I really encourage you to go out in such attire more often, and see what you would like to change, if you would like to change anything. Apologies for how vague this is, and I'd gladly elaborate on something I said here to clarify whatever must be clarified. <3

Im lucky in that while I do have phat thighs, I also have violin hips, so nanchatte hides the thickest part of my thighs while at the same time keeping cardigans/sweater silhouette pretty straight up and down (when they’re larger sizes, which I buy intentionally). So I’m not sure if it’s fair to use me as an example for boobs down, but I know that feel of wanting to be cute flat boxy anime girl when you have a western piggu body. I just accept I’m more pic related than the magazine spreads upthread. Nanchatte is the only jfash that hides the violin hips + fat thighs combo I hate so much.
It’s probably obvious but getting your cardigans large does help. And get the ones that are thicker, where you can see the texture, just thin knit material does help though. I can’t explain what I mean, but yeah.

I've always considered myself to have fairly thick thighs and calves. They're not chubby, but they're pretty muscular. And I get that stupid gap thing at my waist when wearing jeans. I wear nanchatte often, but I've never taken the time to think about it. I don't think nanchatte makes me look sexy, I just feel really cute and stylish. I too have violin hips like >>9885094 though. Maybe that's the difference?

For reference, this is me at different weights and with different skirt lengths, and shorts to show legs. I'm 5'5" and on the left I was about 145, middle 130ish and right 135ish maybe. The way I wear my skirts (except left, because at that time the skirt sat quite high) hides the thickest part my thighs, giving illusion of my legs being slimmer than they actually are. As far as butts go, they can make the back hem ride up, so my friend gets around this by hemming her skirts on a slight diagonal. It's longer in the back so it ends up sitting straight when she puts it on. Something for people with sewing experience to consider. I also oversize cardis for a boxy look, and I tuck my shirts into my skirt waistband.

I've never had a problem wearing nanchatte out. I've gotten straight up compliments when I wore a black seifuku. Sometimes I get asked if I'm wearing a uniform, but overall I get fewer reactions than I do in lolita. I do however get dirty looks when I have my daughter with me. I'm guessing they think I'm a teen mom which is hilarious and also incredibly sad kek.

You can take it further from school uniform territory and more into preppy category by switching from socks to tights, going for a fitted blazer, vest or cardi, and if you like to take influences from twee or otome, mixing in unusual colours and patterns. As for the bright coloured seifuku, going for casual and pairing it with a hoodie and running shoes is a safe bet. Go for muted accessories if you don't feel like going full weeb.

When it comes to these questions I always refer to whatever I see in promotional pictures of nanchatte brands.

> Should people particapating in nanchate go for a more realistic vibe with their uniforms? Or is it okay to be costumey as long as its cute?

Even nanchatte brands vary from that point of view: Conomi has very serious vibes while LucyPop is very quirky. However, there is a general tendency to experiment with colours and palettes that would not suit real uniforms. As long as it's not a straightforward costume it's probably just a matter of style/preference.

> Should seifukus classify as being apart of nanchate or does their need to be more effort put in to a nanchate coord?

Not sure why sailor uniforms should not be considered nanchatte. It can also require quite some effort to pull them off as they can be combined with different scarfs and cardis and so on. Even if it's more common to find them in a set, I think they still classify as nanchatte.
Again, my reference are Japanese nanchatte brands and they do sell a lot of serafuku tops.

Got asked to take some photos of my Hug Sunshine stuff for people curious elsewhere and thought I'd share here. Sorry it's a bit long but it includes a comparison for Hug Sunshine vs Bodyline as well.

First up is a Hug Sunshine cardigan I got. It's pretty decent for spring/fall wear and soft fabric.
Cost $11.50 and came with a free bow.

>> No.9905756
File: 362 KB, 1152x864, DSCN0582.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
9905756

Next is Hug Sunshine's "clearance" shirts. Both of these were around $2.50 each and also came with free ribbons (I had over a dozen of these at one point, they give ribbons away with everything).

They have some stray threads (especially around the button holes) and wrinkle quite easily without ironing (see the one on the right) but they're very nice for literally being under $3.

9905764

Okay this is the comparison part. The two black skirts are Hug Sunshine and the grey one is Bodyline.

Hug Sunshine skirts: around $5.50 each but you can buy literally an entire outfit (vest + shirt + skirt + tie) for around $20 as well.

Bodyline skirt: around $20 right now and a full outfit (vest + shirt + skirt + tie) for around $30

File: 350 KB, 1152x864, DSCN0592.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
9905766

From the outside they virtually look the same aside from the adjustable waistband clasp that Bodyline's skirt has and the visible zipper that Hug Sunshine has.

File: 344 KB, 1152x864, DSCN0593.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
9905768

This is where you can see the major difference. Hug Sunshine has a visible zipper on the inside while Bodyline's is still hidden. Bodyline also has a hidden pocket but from my experience it's a bit difficult to find in the folds of the ski

>> No.9905773
File: 461 KB, 1152x864, DSCN0598.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
9905773

And this is the thickness between the two. The angle is a bit off so just use the section underneath my finger for accurate comparison. There's really no difference between them in fabric feel, heaviness, and visible thickness.

Personally, if you want the waistband and pocket then Bodyline is a better deal but I'm not 100% sure all of their skirts have them. If you're not picky those sorts of things and want to save money, Hug Sunshine is the better deal and you get free ribbon ties (or whatever they have in stock) out of the deal.

This is just me but I use Yoybuy simply because they pay me commission to promote them on a blog I run.
It's kept me out of the loop for other shopping services for over a year now but if you pop by the Taobao general there should be quite a few posts made recently about orders through other shopping services.

Wish I could help more with that but yeah, I don't really use anyone else now since Yoybuy gives me credit with them and I try not to endorse them outside of that blog, not because they're not good but because I don't want to use my own experiences as testimonial since there's affiliation involved and I don't know if that means I get treated differently or not compared to other customers despite using them for ages before I was affiliated.

Im trying to save up money so that I can buy nanchatte after I go to college (its across the country & i dont want to travel with a lot of stuff.)
I want to get a mix of jp brand (Like Conomi) and non-brand...

Does $400 sound like too much or not enough for at least 3+ full outfits? That means the skirts, tops, sweaters / jackets, socks, shoes, 1 coat, etcetc.
I can already get blazers really cheap from the thrift store so Im not going to calculate that in but.. im trying to see if I should save more or less?

Im probably not going to buy brand name socks so.. i might be fine there.

Conomi cardigans are 60 and I think their skirts are 90, shirts maybe 40 and ribbons 15? IIRC shoes are 90 too but I don’t know why you wouldn’t just get some Weejuns or similar for 60 and under on sale at that point. 400 is too little for 3+ outfits if you want more than one full Conomi one at least.

Imo / what ive heard:
Oxfords, dress shoes, non-fluffy loafers slip on shoes... brogues, mary janes.. businessy type shoes with a low heel..

Stuff like the old ladies at church would wear.

avoid sharp point style shoes.. !!!

Try for dark colors like black and really dark browns

Some wear sneakers for a sportier look. I would say to only do that with "sporty coords" like ones with track jackets cause otherwise it looks a bit lazy.

Im definitely going to have to go thrift shopping. The only thing I really want in brand are skirts.
Im tempted to make skirts myself because its so much cheaper.. but I do want to feel more authentic by having at least 1 brand skirt.

Im perfectly fine when it comes to outerwear.. The only thing I really struggle with finding is the tops. Esp because i current have a huge chest & short arms.

Im probably only going to spend a lot on the shoes, at least 1 top & 1 skirt.. otherwise i should easily be able to spend under the amount I plan to save.

Just wanted to chime in and say I have thunder thighs too. I'm really slender and petite everywhere else and have no boobs, but my thighs are just so big that I feel like pic related when I wear anything that doesn't cover them. I've even got stretch marks on them. I don't really feel like they sexy-up cute clothes (no boobs helps that a lot) but it does make it look like I'm trying to dress up younger than I really am or something. It takes away a lot of the cuteness and feels awkward. It really sucks.

>>9908812
Western Crocs do come in a few cute styles, but it's slim pickings. I actually think Crocs can be really cute! They have that chunky roundness to them that works well for cute looks. It depends on the style and color. I have a candy blue pair that I get compliments on all the time, which I never would have dreamed of since everyone goes on about how ugly they are. It sucks that we don't get as many cute ones as what Japan has though.

Speaking of getting stuff from normie-brands, I got this skirt from H&M a little while ago on sale. The length and pattern is perfect for nanchatte, if you ask me, the only downside is that all the pleats stand out from the waistband, making it look like I have a pudgy stomach and weird love-handles. Personally speaking, not everything seifuku has to be super-coordinated or perfect, just as long as it fits the aesthetic I want to achieve. It's ok if it looks a little off; it's more realistic that way.

A huge part of nanchatte for myself is customization and adding personal touches on fairly plain pieces, and North Face isn't really heavy on graphics. It's a blank canvas more than anything.

Any brands that carry box pleated skirts? They feel a bit more mature than regular knife pleats.
Also, are "patterned" knits a thing in nanchatte? Like, those vests and cardigans that have braid like patterns going down the torso.

You’re thinking of cable knit and it is a thing, but it’s usually associated with colder weather.

I got this book in a suprise box from Japan and noticed it's full of nanchatte stuff related to Disney. If anyone wants scans/pics just let me know.

Are there any Nanchatte brands that crossover with goth/punk style (preferably male)? I'm into punky J-Fash as it is and dig around routinely on second hand sites but I'm not too familiar with Nanchatte brands outside aRCONOMi, so I'd be interested to know if there's some brand I've never heard of serving those styles.

Unfortunately most of the brands out there aren’t doing any goth/punk looks at the moment, much les anything specifically for men. It’s usually preppy, idol, or gal looks.

Ah that's a shame, thanks for the info though. Do you have a list of Nanchatte brands? I'll see if I can accessorize or find some creative way around it.

A long while back we had a spreadsheet with all the different brands and stores specializing in nanchatte. I have no idea how up to date it is but it's worth checking out:

Does anyone know where I can find a black seifuku? I'm hoping for something better quality than bodyline... I was actually just going to give in and buy one from bodyline a few days ago during their sale, but they weren't accepting paypal. sigh

I do not think box pleated skirts are much of a thing in nanchatte and I have never seen any Japanese brand carrying them.

Idk about brands, but I got a box pleat skirt from the thrift store. Might take some looking around even within nanchatte brands or taobao.
