Anyone have a good idea on how to paint on 100% polyester?
Starting to put this together, found a white zoot suit costume on amazon. Planning on dying the suit orange, and then painting on the green strips, using a stencil so the lines are uniform. Any advice on what kind of paint/what kind of process would keep the paint on? Never painted on 100% poly before

I was planning on doing a simple cosplay of Moira in her origins uniform, but her lab coat is kind of intricate and it would be better if I just made it myself. The collar stands up and I’m not really sure where I could find a pattern that does that. Should I just use a basic coat lapel and make it stand up with startch or something or is there another way to go about it?

Looks like a pretty basic lapel/collar combination except it stands straight up instead of folding over. Some stiff interfacing should do the job.

This summer I go to a martial art event and the organisers wanted to have a theme. They ended picking "unicorn".
I want to go there with a customized keikogi and I thought going /mlp/ with a Rainbow Dash style.

Pic related what I thought doing. I thought having something simple. Dunno if I keep the cutie mark.
What do you think of the "design" ? Should I put more rainbow ?
Also, How can I customize it ? which materials and which method ?

also I don't know about the belt. Either I take a white one that I customize too or I keep my black belt but it won't be customized

For real though, the easiest method for the trim would be rainbow bias tape but I don't know if you can find it in stripes like you want. I'm finding stuff more like pic related. Maybe rainbow tape will hold long enough? The cutie mark looks good there or you could have it as a design in the back. That can be easily done with iron on transfer paper. A custom belt you'd have to hand paint with fabric paint or something but that could get expensive given you have to buy all the colours individually.

I hope this is OK to ask here, could anyone point me to where I could find a long, white, wavy/curly wig with no bangs? I've looked at Arda, Epic Cosplay, Ebay & Taobao and everything either has bangs, is shorter than what I'm looking for (looking for 80cm+), or is more silver/grey than white. Actually Epiccosplay's Hera has bangs. The no bang style is called Daphne. But it is in stock in Classic White atm.

What would you recommend to help this wig? The underneath has become frizzy (I assume from friction with my neck and back), but it’s not tangled. It combs out just fine, but the fibres are kinked. The top of the wig is fine though (see upper right image). I don’t think just re-curling the frizzy areas would do much, is there anything else I can do?

Instead of opting for unreliable paid I'd applique this shit. Even if you don't have a sewing machine get some simple green strips and sew them on by hand. Fuck, you might as well glue it, since that seems to be the level of effort you're into. Looking through the ribbon section could hook you up with shit you don't even need to hem. My advice would be to seek something of a similar fabric which your main suit is made of. This method will give you clean edges, straight lines and up the "quality" of your cosplay. I doubt this is going to look good no matter how you do it, but anything is better than paint...

Does anyone know how I might create the graphic on Conan's glasses? Is there some kind of colored transparency or perhaps a sticker site that has a transparent option?

What parts do you want transparent exactly? All of it or just the blue?
Because you could stick transparent blue cellophane to the inside of the frame. Cut out white sticker paper for the designs and stick it on the side of the cellophane against the lense. Or if you have a super steady hand, draw it on.
Also look up Leonardo Watch cosplay since he has glowing eyes/goggles. Someone might have made something cool.

Where can I find long, thick, two-way zippers? Specifically for an Organization XIII coat.

No. It's obvious in your reference that his coat without wind will reach his knees, at the very least, If you size up that coat until it's the proper length you'll have a tent.
But since you're confident enough to add stitch details, modify the collar, shorten the arms and add those hard looking hems (?) I don't see what's holding you back. Making those arms looks good is going to be harder than sewing a base coat.
Just take the plunge and learn how to sew for cosplay.

They definitely should. If not another option is blue window tint? One side is already sticky so you could even use regular paper for the white bits, but you'll have to be careful about fingerprints and dust.

If you don't even know what hems are, you're gonna have a bad time.They're the edge of a garment that's usually folded and sewn for neatness. In your picture of Dabi you can see they're ragged from the hip down and there might be some lacing in the back. This varies by source though, the anime doesn't have a ragged hem. Also just rolling up the sleeves and throwing the rings on top will make that area incredibly bulky, and probably kill your circulation. Better to shorten the sleeves before adding rings. Anime Dabi might be a better cosplay actually...

Most cosplayers use got2b glued hairspray and hair glue. You can use any strong hairspray though, along with stuff like fabric glue. Don’t get regular hair gel because it’s designed to work with the proteins in real hair, and won’t hold synthetic wigs.

Thinking about trying to do Muscular from BnHA, what might be the best material to make for his muscle fibers?

Assuming you can’t sew since you are going for a “I bought it” cosplay.
Get some heat and bond, get some ribbon and use the heat and bond to place the ribbons into the fabric. Paint is tacky and looks bad.

I primed a prop, but the primer is still sticky because it's a soft plastic. Should I give it a few more days to dry, or do I need to do something else?

That's one option, or for a more realistic look you can get a slightly longer base wig and your bun of choice. There's plenty of tutorials on tying high ponies and stubbing the end so you can clip on whatever you want.

This is actually the purpose of a collar for a coat. It only gets folded down because indoors it'll overheat you.
Fashion has largely made people unaware of a lot of clothings utilitarian functions.

That being said, not just any coat pattern will do. You'll want one that specifically mentions having a lining and interfacing, and it needs to be a woman's coat pattern designed for right-to-left foldover, with buttons (though in pic, they seem to be some sort of clip, you'll still need the button space)

If you don't have a hotel room, see if any of your friends have one you can borrow to change. Depending on how elaborate your cosplay is, you're gonna have a bad time. Con bathroom is pretty last resort and unsanitary if you need to change contacts.

You can try eye mesh, like fursuits and mascot suits have. The only thing is that I don't think you'd be able to layer it like bandages while still being able to see.

Dumb question, but is it possible to paint a plaid pattern onto an already-pleated skirt like attached? Would I just use fabric paint, or something else?

Unless it's an extremely simple design (think the pink plaid skirts from Nichijou), I'd recommend against it and it's likely going to not look as good as you imagine.

Also, on a skirt that's already pleated, I imagine fabric paint getting everywhere and spreading out in nooks and crannies that you didnt anticipate. If you're going to paint fabric, do on fabric that hasn't been sewn into anything yet. Plaid skirts are honestly quite easy to sew, there's plenty of youtube tutorials, and you should be able to make a decent looking one out of the nicer 8/yd cotton stuff from Jo Ann's or whatever your local fabric place is.

This is never going to look good. Get plain fabric and paint it, and then sew it. See how in the right photo you're going to have lines in the pleats and shit? You'll never be able to accurately paint a straight line inside the pleats and have it continue being straight. If you don't paint inside the pleats, then you just have weird blank fabric inside the pleats.

What are some good communities to find someone to hire for a sewing project? I've never had someone work on a project for me, and never having sewn with a machine I'm at a loss about the whole process/what to expect. Just looking to get a moderate amount of soft props made, out of minky and with a small zipper on it. Any advice?

I'm working on a costume for a post-apocalyptic larp. Because I'm close to a poorfag, I'm re-using a lot of my old stuff, which leads to the question:

Given a green jacket, brown pants and black boots, what color shirt should I wear to look decent, and not be murderized in the heat? (Jacket is linen so less of a concern, and I need it to bolt my armor plates to.) White, the classic fashion choice, is out since you know, apocalypse. I was thinking black, but that seems like it'd be murder in the heat. (The LARP runs in the summer season for most events). I'm also accentuating with goldish/brass-ish plates for armor, if that makes a difference.

What to do about the wig for Bortz? How would I make the hair look shiny? There's Bortz wigs out there but they're just regular hair, is there a way to make it look glittery, and specifically the red part, look like a flat surface or gem?

Alternatively you could try tracing the imprint they made on the fabric into your own vector, and kind of fill in the blanks for the burned away parts using whatever more of that reference you can make out.

Contacts can majorly fuck up your eyeballs if you have the wrong curve, prescription, material, there's defects, etc. There's strict quality control for a reason and there's not enough demand to make them specifically to character. Plus, the pupils have to be empty to see through so you can't get a cross in there anyways. Just get yellow lenses and photoshop your eyes afterwards if it bothers you that much. If you are REALLY dedicated to getting it just right, I know samhain lenses does custom hand painted contacts but they go for 100-150$ per lense.

Please don't paint your bias tape, it'll make it gross and stiff and if your trim is shiny it'll probably flake off. Better to rip it all off and replace with your own better bias tape.

Okay, so I wanna create Junkrats arm. I have never worked with making props like this and I know it's probably not the best starter project, but I'm gonna try.

I have pretty much all of the materials I need to start (eva foam, heat gun, contact cement etc), but I just can't wrap my head around how to make a pattern that would work.. I thought it would be easy, but everything I've tried ends up not working.

My questions are 1, if anyone knows about someone who's made his arm and published a pattern of how they did it
2, If anyone here has made it and if they would be willing to share the the pattern they made (I wouldn't mind paying a bit, I understand that a lot of work and thought goes into it)
3, if anyone who has experience with props in general could give some tips on how to make a pattern

Also, what would be the best thickness of foam? I'm using those workout mat things, but I'm thinking they might be too thick

I apologize in advanced for simple ass question, I'm still relatively new to sewing and fabric choices. Would muslin be a doable fabric for a renaissance style tunic? I've been planning to use a linen-look fabric for it, but the pattern also has muslin listed as a recommended fabric. So I bought a pair of heels which are were just about perfect for my cosplay, but they weren't available in half sizes. An 8 was too small but 9 was too large. I went with the 9 since I assumed putting inserts in would be enough but it wasn't; when standing up I can put my whole thumb in the back.

Muslin is a very good begginer fabric. It comes in varying quality. It usually used for as a mock up fabric for new projects. But depending on the quality it works fine for a Renaissance tunic especial the unbleached type.

They're pretty much just glowsticks but the fancy colour changing battery powered ones can get pretty expensive. Look up lumica lights, cyalume or chemical glow sticks. Cyalume gave me some Amazon prime options if you're in the US/Canada and want them fast.

You're going to need full coverage foundation and likely some additional concealer and color corrector. Go on YouTube and search "how to cover tattoos with makeup" there's tons of tutorials that will show you the products you need.

The sticky is not extremely up to date so its really about better judgement and reading reviews very carefully. Arda and epiccos are still the go tos for getting wigs. Most cosplay shops are just middle men for stuff you can get on taobao, but if you're not comfortable navigating taobao yet that's fine. Be safe most of those costumes are pretty flimsy and props aren't usually made for heavy use. Also many times the pictures on the site are not what you're going to get.

Tldr: read reviews, don't expect much quality wise and buy at your own risk.

I've been trying for ages to do Kazuma's cape from Konosuba, but I've realised that in the show the way it drapes over his body doesn't really work properly in real life. I've tried a circle half-cape to no success, and the kind where the front and back pieces are separate, but nothing seems to ever actually work.

I'm interested in cosplaying Sugimoto from Golden Kamui, but the biggest problem is the hat. I've been able to find photos of Meiji Era infantry caps and they seem to be made from some kind of heavy wool, but I haven't been able to find anywhere online that sells it.
Would anyone know either a good place to get one or the method and materials to make one?

I'm making a head/mask/helmet thing that has a big cyclops eye right in the middle. What can I use a mesh or whatever to cover it so I can still see and would take paint well so I can paint on the eye features? Most meshes I'm seeing are pretty open and I don't think they'd look 'solid' enough.

Any wig stores out there that carry the same wig colors throughout the store? I need a blond lacefront wig as a base and extra wefts that are the exact same color. Pic related. Ordering random wigs from ebay/ali/taobao would just result into getting two different tones of blond and the wig/wefts not matching each other.

Varsity jackets are relatively easy to sew, you'd most likely save money and ensure that the result is up to par by just sewing one yourself.
If you absolutely want to use existing jackets then painting or swapping the elastics do both sort of work, but they'll probably end up being more hassle than they're worth. They work in an emergency. If you paint the elastics and they get stretched while wearing the paint is gonna look like shit, and if you swap the elastics then the resulting seams might not be very clean.

It depends on what kind of look you wanted, yes you could do the morph suit but you could also have the top and the bottom separated and have the blue parts either stitched together or painted. If you want to do a morph suit you could commission someone to make you the digital pattern and then have it printed. The company that prints the pattern for you could also sew it together for you for an extra cost or if you know how to sew then you can cut and sew it together yourself.

There are patterns for helmets online for Eva foam you could modify. The front could be plexiglass or thin plastic you can heat up and bend. If you want a one way mirror look you can buy car tint on amazon, also I advise to buy anti fog.

General tips- get some nice sharp small scissors such as Fiskars or a similar size and sharpness. Cut with the scissors pointed in the same direction as the hair, so for example with bangs point the scissors up. Do small amounts and pin the hair to the side with some cheap hair clips you can get at pretty much any store.

Better to cut too little than cut too much, anyway

You should cut the sides at an angle, then leave the front but long and shorten the back end. Keep the pieces that spike up long so it won’t reveal your natural hair on the side back.
For the bangs, cut two layers. The top one will be longer than the bottom one because you need to style the “face framing pieces”, and the big pieces on top will need to be spiked up a little bit.

Are you looking for brand recommendations? Water activated paints are the easiest to work with, but they will come off if they come in contact with water (like sweat). You can mitigate this if you apply setting spray and setting powder. I like Wolfe FX, Diamond FX, Snazaroo, Kryolan Aquacolor, and Mehron Paradise paints. They'll come in a variety of colors and are pretty easy to find on the internet.

You can also find alcohol based paints that are a little harder to work with, but they have more staying power as they won't come off with water. You can look at ProAiir for those kinds of paints.

You can achieve the "sparkle" with a paint that has sparkle mixed into the paint (Snazaroo's Sparkle line for example will give you a nice shimmer in the sun) or you could get some fine glitter and add it on top of whatever paint you use.

Regardless of what you use, be mindful of the people around you and make sure you're careful when touching other people or their possessions because even with the best preparations, your paint still may come off on other people.

Depending on the contact cement, it's fine. I used an expensive quality contact cement once and it melted my foam, using shitty dollar store contact cement works out perfectly though. Don't have the glue on the outer/visible side or else it'll leak through and crust up. If you're really unsure do some test patches.

What's the best way to make a simple bracelet? I'm having trouble finding good examples, since most tutorials I find are for bigger or more complex ones (e.g. Chun Li, Wonder Woman, Judal). I want to make Space Dandy's translator, which is a pretty basic cylinder with a gutter in the center. Working on a Joshua Graham cosplay, and I can't find a gauze that seems to get both the texture and color I'm looking for. My best bet for the hands right now is some stretchy gauze so I can actually move my fingers, soaked in tea to give it the color I want, but as far as the rest of the arms/chest/knee/head go, the best looking stuff I've been able to find is fabric store linen.
I've also considered compression arm sleeves with the gauze attached directly to them for ease of attachment/removal, but I'm unsure how well the gauze would hold up after time.

Couple questions: this is my first time making armor so I’m pretty trial and error on it so far. I’ve been using 10mm craft foam with a top layer of 2mm just for security. I bought a craft foam primer and gray plasti dip, will the primer be necessary before I do the plasti dip or am I being too paranoid? I helped a friend with armor last year and we absolutely hated the white plasti dip compared to the black because of bubbles and stickiness, will I need to worry about quality with the gray?

I’m also struggling on how to attach my armor to me. It’s pauldrons with a small middle chest piece, and I don’t have a chest plate to attach them to (the base is just a fabric mantle), and there’s no canon design of how they’re attached to the character. Should I try to attach them to the mantle via glue or tacking it into place (would prefer not), or have them connect to each other with elastic or chain? Will attach pic for reference just in case.

use only plastidip. Make sure you heat up the eva foam with a heatgun to 'seal' the pores in the foam (you can see it happen upclose), itll make a better layer. And warm up the plastidip in a warm pan of water, itll significantly decrease the bubbles (and spray thinner layers). You should attach them to your mantle with parachute clips and nylon straps so you can remove them for washing your mantle. Sew the nylon straps to your mantle and hotglue them to the inside of your eva foam. Tear up the eva foam a bit with a knife before you hotglue it, the extra surface will help prevent tearing the straps off.

Top three useful tools? Seam ripper, handsewing needle, and internet. You’re gonna fuck up a lot as a beginner and that’s just sort of part of the joy of learning new things! I’ll take a peek at my machine specs later but you effectively want something that can run without constantly breaking. You don’t need an embroidery machine. There are computerized machines and there are regular ones, either type is fine. You will only need a regular machine, regular “foot”, and if the machine doesn’t come with one a pedal is a good investment. It’s just like a car pedal that lets you control speed with your foot so your hands are free to manipulate the fabric.

For learning to see I recommend either YouTube the early bit or go to the local craft shop if there’s one that has lessons. That’s how I learned the basics and whether you’re a boy, girl, or NEET helicopter the instructors will be delighted to see you (and take the sweet sweet commission).

They’re kind of a hit or miss in my experience. I have... no idea how this yoke thing works. You can kinda tell from the inside that it probably isn't part of the bodysuit but just sewn, turned out, and then top stitched, but I have no idea how to make that work, especially considering that the zipper gets in the way.

Can I spray primer over previous spraypaint? I primed and sprayed something already but my dumb ass was too aggressive with the sandpaper between coats and you can see a lot of scratch marks even through several layers of paint. I really don't want to clean the whole thing off again and there's literally no details to worry about washing out by using too much paint.

I am currently working on making this sword. The blade is easy because it can be made out of wood or polystyrene. The crossguard and handle can be made out of EVA and a wooden dowel, respectively. However, this ornamental part on the bottom half of the blade has me stuck on how to do it easily.

What I'm thinking is making a rigid frame to connect the blade to the crossguard, and then layering on some kind of sculpting material to create a single, seamless piece. The detail lines and curved gray pieces on the side can then be EVA sheets glued on.

I just need to know what material would be best for the sculpting part. It has to be something that air-dries and is fairly light. Sculpting epoxy seems like a good bet, but I've read that it can be difficult to sand because it's so hard. Is there any specific option that's strong and air-dries but can still be sanded/carved after curing?

Rubber bands would weigh too heavily, especially with how many you would need to create that look. I'd suggest using foam and a heat gun. I'm helping a friend with a Zero-Zero-Two costume, and she's having trouble affixing the horns to the headband. She made them from cardboard and wants to set them into the 4mm thick cheap plastic headband, but I'm pretty sure that's asking for the plastic to break; hot glue has been tried without success, and we're at the point of considering masking tape or electrical tape, but I'm not optimistic about that holding up. She's got some acrylic paint and aluminum tape to cover it up, so it shouldn't need to look great so long as it's smoothish.

So I want to remake this belt, since I initially used plastic jars, which were cumbersome and also a little too big. I've thought about using PVC pipe but I have nothing to saw it with, and I feel like craft foam with nothing to back itself would cause it to collapse in on itself.

Putting cans inside is an idea, but no one in this house is a soda/beer drinker, nor eats any canned foods. I might just go with this option anyway and eat like a homeless person for a week, but I'm posting here in case anyone has any other suggestions as to what to make the gold "shells" out of or what to back craft foam with.

I've got a bunch of jewelry to work on for my next cosplay, mostly gold pieces on the edges of fabric, and suggestions for material and how to affix it to the fabric edges?

PVC pipe cutters work wonders and are not a large investment. You'd just need one that's big enough for the pipe you're using.
The drawback is if you're cutting a short piece or too close to the edge, it might squish the pipe instead of cleanly cutting it.

I wonder if your local hardware store would be able to cut any pvc you buy from them. Otherwise, I'd suggest getting some thin plastic and making the "jars" out of them.
