Hey TX people! Con season is finally underway. We have Comicpalooza and Con of Thrones going on right now. A-kon is around the corner. There are other cons coming up like AnimeCTX, Corpus comic con, Greater Austin comic con, San Japan, etc.

Which cons are you planning on attending this summer? How's your progress coming along? Is there anything you're excited for or not so excited for? Any issues/things going on that we should be aware of? Let's chat.

>> No.9893193

>>9893183
OP here. I will be going to Greater Austin Comic Con for sure with some friends. I'm on the fence about AnimeCTX and Anime Austin. I really want to go to San Japan but my room seems to be falling through. If it does then I might aim for AnimeFest or something else.

I think I'm going to take a break from cosplaying for a little while. I'm a little burnt out and I've gained some weight. I might just go in some regular clothes for the next few cons. Also, I'm hearing there's going to be a cat con in Austin????

DAE notice that Ikkicon, AnimeCTX, and ANT has barely any posted info? I heard that they lost a lot of staff after the last Ikkicon. It has been a trickle of info coming out. Even the groups are wondering WTH is going on.

>> No.9894400

Ikkicon and AnimeCTX staff have a bit of overlap (I believe) and they've always been awful about having a set schedule prepared more than a two weeks in advanced. Like, i'm pretty sure drama like this happens every year but we just don't usually hear about it.

Austin cons are russian roulette.

Planning on dipping from this awful state later this year but I plan to go to A-Kon and Afest for a couple of days for cosplay groups. Just not feeling it right now.

Is anyone going to check out Anime Dallas this year? It looks like it shouldn’t be TOO horrible but you never know. I was highly disappointed with ANT last year, I’ve loved it being at the Hilton regardless of the parade mess. That new venue was godawful.

Yup. Ikkicon hit the shitter years ago. Has Anime CTX ever truly been good? I don't know much about Anime Austin since I've never been. Wizard World isn't that bad but it's more for those who are into comics and a bit of this and that.

I got back from GACC not too long ago. 1st yr con and went as expected. Not much to see and do but good to see friends and new people. I hope they don't catch the Austin curse and continue to improve. Okashicon is around the corner. I might go scope that one out for a day.

Even at GACC, you could feel the discord amongst the people. Like everyone was friendly but pretty much only stuck to their inner circles and there wasn't much cohesiveness as a community. *sigh* Maybe the Austin area can move on from all the drama and become a comm again. I mean just don't interact with the people who you have beef with and move on or just don't go seeking drama by instigating people. We're all adults here (but then again...this could be hard for some...) I don't really encounter drama because I stay away from it or don't take part in it.

But it's better than how last year started. The panels are better, there's actually moderators that stop people from telling VAs their life stories before ultimately asking the tired question "How do I get into voice acting", and I like the crowd more. Delta H is this coming weekend, and considering what I've heard, my expectations are SUPER low. Can my friends & I get away with ghosting the con?

We went to this past Oni without a pass, which worked out because we mainly wanted to see the artist's alley & arcade, both which were public, but idk if the Delta H layout would allow that. Are the dealers room & artist alley typically any decent, or are they mostly more of the same? If any artists you like have a table, by all means lemme know

ATX comm is pretty dead and it's mostly older lolitas (like no one under 25). They allow general jfashion to be involved and okashicon has been the "big thing" lately. The girls really involved within the comm have known each other for a while. It's not cliquey, though. Street fashion comm used to be associated with UT, but it has open membership now. The current active mod is trying to revive it, but no one is really going to the current meets.
For both of the comms, meets are usually located really north...like pretty much round rock north.

Austin in general is an odd place as far as geeky things are concerned. There are plenty of people who enjoy anime, cosplay, lolita and jfash, gaming, etc. but they tend to keep to themselves and don't always branch out to others. I've lived in Austin for a good part of my life and it has always seemed this way. It's not that the people are rude but they're rather passive. I'm not sure if its to avoid drama or its shyness or idk...

>> No.9941797

Before most con fashion shows, the models agree to not bother the guests prior to shows through an agreement and it says if they do, they may get banned. I'm sure people don't always read those terms though.

They send out a medium sized list of things that will get you banned, so just don't do them and do well on stage and you may get accepted regularly. (ALSO, I don't know about this promoter, but someone told me that getting your application in early can help, because some brands will just pick people who look good enough and fit their items near the top of the pile)

It’s on the model application form when you apply to be a model. It was something like, “Applying to model, we expect you to be courteous and professional to others and guests.”

DESU if can’t keep your celebrity boner in, in a professional work setting, that’s grossly annoying. If Brittany Spears doesn’t want people to bother her while she is rehearsing, don’t, otherwise you get booted.

Probably not? I just don't have high hopes for this convention. Will probably be a mess of disorganization like every first year convention with canceled panels.

It's weird that they chose to do it the weekend before Anime Austin, which was the convention the owner of Okashi used to be a part of. I guess they are just being bitter or something?

I agree completely, but that's not the issue at all here. I've had the guests come up to ME when at R's events and she's excluded me from events ever since. She got angry with me multiple times as well for not only responding to them, but for speaking with them in Japanese (I am studying Japanese as my major) because her translation services were not needed for the interaction to occur. She's a control freak and that's just how it is. Everyone either chooses to play by her rules or they tell her where to shove it. I've tried to be nice to her and support her events/the people she brings, but apparently it's not enough. Stop making excuses for her bad behavior.
