There have been Animegao Kigurumi threads in CGL before.

1. The heads certainly are props
2. Many of the heads are hand made.
3. A lot of the costumes are either hand made or altered from what can be bought commercially.
4. Kigurumi performers show up at Anime events just like a lot of CGL fashions, so we are certainly talking about the same conventions.

As the readme file says.

/cgl/ is a board for the following: • Cosplay • Lolita • J-fashion • Conventions & gatherings • Sewing & prop-making • Craftsmanship tools/materials & tutorials

So it is Cosplay and if bitching about quality is not Craftmanship what is?

This d e s u. They're hard to make well, particularly the heads. Just like fursuits, that alone should give them enough merit to be respected by serious costumers. Kig really grew on me. I remember years back I used to think they were pretty weird but after rediscovering them from a kig video with obscure techno over it, i've become really interested in how masks are made and the kig community. So far they just seem like really nice people who stay in their niche circle of friends who cosplay in kig. The uncanny look to them grew on me too, to the point that some of them look pretty cute in video.

No actually. Animegao Kigurumi was intended for little girls who adored Anime shows like Sailor Moon and Pretty Cure.

The companies designed live action stage shows, like theme park attractions, to market the programs directly to the kids. All the performers wore masks, so they looked as close as possible to their 2D counterparts in the cartoons.

Because in a static photo, nothing is moving, but in person, the face doesn't move but the rest of the body does. (Personally they start to look creepy even in static photos when there's more than one photo of the same person in series, or when the photographer doesn't do a good job of making it look dead-eyed)
When people start to stick in some face driven animatronics into these masks then hopefully it'll negate the creepiness a bit.

Anyone who has their entire body covered tends to give me the creeps. Their photos online almost always have some sort of fetish thing added to it and I find it extremely unsettling. But all of the animegao cosplayers I've seen in person stick to themselves or their social group and have never really done anything to set off actual red flags. I think the costumes that look like BJDs are actually kind of pretty though.
I guess if you're a big ugly who wants to cosplay this is the way to go. Wear foam tits. Be free.

You may have a point there about a static expression.

True some kig mask makers have experimented with varying success adding animation.

But then even the latest Mickey Mouse mascots only blink their eyes, not move or roll the eyeballs as well. So don't go holding the fans to higher than professional standards.

There's little mechanical reason that with a big head like you'd get wit ha kig it wouldn't be possible to put some sort of framework in and a silicone skin on top of that for facial expressions. Disney parks keeping things simple's probably for maintenance's sake so that it's not breaking down more then they'd like. So, you are OK with the Creepy teenagers who do Kigurumi, or the Creepy females who make a living as stage actors doing Kig shows?

Granted interactions are a bit stilted. IRL most Kig Performers don't have a pre-recorded soundtrack to react to. Nor do they have the face flexibility of a Mime to get their point across. That's why they have Handlers to field questions the same as Mickey or Goofy might in the theme park..

A little known fact about amateur Anemegao Kigurumi performance, is the Japanese style.

In nutshell these Kig performers strive to be more professional in public, than the Paid Stage actors. That includes major people skills when it comes to interacting with their younger audiences one on one.

Yes a group of Kig girls will stick to themselves, as they won't proactively attempt to interact with their audience. They let the audience make the first moves.

Looking at all the youtube footage I would hazard a guess that there is a sizeable contingent who use the "Doll" style Kigurumi masks as a basis for doing one form or the other off Fashion Kigurumi.

What Luluidoll is doing is a step deeper, in that the bodysuit mimics the Ball Jointed Doll armatures. This I would Consider BJD Kigurumi.

Again depending on the style of clothing, you could have Lolita Kigurumi, Steampunk Kigurumi, even Gothic Kigurumi.

So far as I am aware Shironuri still consists of painting your face white and has not progressed into using masks. However if it did, that style would probably be called Shironuri Kigurumi, as the Mask would be completely white.

Hey there, posting from /jp/ to say hi. I just recently opened my own kig shop on storenvy where I sell very basic kigurumi mask blanks that you can easily customize to make into the character you like. I'm having a sale right now for memorial day and offering free shipping all week till saturday. I don't want to sound like I'm shilling to hard but so far all my customers have come from /jp/, so I want to reach where there are kig fans. I've only got the one generic mask style so far, but I've got more designs planned for later this year.

I make my masks in a small prop studio in California using fiberglass and resin. There's an option for no eyeholes or precut eyeholes in a generic shape that you can easily widen and change. I'm also open to cutting custom eyeshapes if you want, just message me on the site. I'm at remykigs (dot) storenvy (etc) com if you're interested, I appreciate you taking a look.

>dressing up as anime characters is perfectly ok
>crossdressing as anime characters is generally ok
>but if you put an anime mask on it's automatically weird and gross
Sometimes I underestimate the amount of hypocritical (wo)manchildren on this board. Anime kigurumi can be done poorly or well, just like cosplay/lolita/fursuiting/general fashion. It's even less sexual than crossplay since the person involved is usually wearing a zettai suit and completely covering their face. It's weird but also neat, people put a lot of work into their masks/costumes/wigs to get them to work well together.

I don't know if this counts as an example of animegao or kigurumi, but sarokichi creates masks that are breathtaking works of art. Her style of mask leans more toward the creepy side but they are extremely well done in my opinion. Some of her masks feature articulated jaws. More of her works can be found on her twitter account: @sarokichi.

We don’t need to wear Kigu heads, anon, we are for the most part decent looking lolitas. And I don’t know even one comm that would accept a Kigu head wearer at our regular comm meets at all. It would be really weird if someone showed up wearing one.

It's true that most adults can't wear it daily because of work-related constraints, but saying that "nobody" wears it daily is an exaggeration and again, factually incorrect. Some adults are students who are free to wear what they want, others work in environments that don't put a lot of emphasis (if any) on looks or even encourage creativity, which allows people to wear lolita if they choose to. I work in an art school, my position isn't even directly related to art or fashion but I'm still allowed to wear whatever I want, so I wear lolita.

If you mean the discussion upthread about the doll masks being "everywhere" at lolita meetups, it's because it's not true. The doll meetups may not all be for publicity, if there are enough people who do this it's entirely possible that there are meetups that are casual and organized by fans of these masks, who may also wear lolita; but it's not directly tied to what lolita meetups are about. It's like saying that because living dolls wear lolita sometimes, then lolita fashion is all about being a living doll. And judging by the responses this question got in the lolita gen >>9913129 I doubt the ordinary lolita comm would be okay with this. Fun fact, Luluidoll uses a base mask that she makes available for her friends to use too. When you see a girl with that mask, it's not always the same person.
