So Guangzhou's local con just finished about a week ago and the FFACG have two difference cover dance performance types to counter saturation. One specifically for Love Live and the other for general Vocaloid and anime OST songs

The second half of that is original choreography, right? It's arranged pretty well. I really adore that Hanamaru. I wish Dia would not only be more expressive, but would stand with her feet fully together when the choreo calls for it. It's a problem with overweight dancers where if they're not paying attention to it, they space their feet wider more than others. It just looks awkward and draws attention to her size.

>> No.9874930

Why must you curse my eyes, anon?
This is a very classic case of what happens when people with zero dance experience try to choreograph. It's overall awkward, boring, and repetitive.

Why even post this? There are so many other better covers, unless it is for cringe.

I really hate it when people walk on stage during a dance! you can idol step, skip, spin, anything but walk.
what's with that fight nonsense, it is totally out of character and makes no sense.
They need to work on appropriate characterization when dancing.

Final thoughts: lack luster and not even worth posting as cringe. mediocre.

>> No.9875092

>>9874968

Watching cringe can actually be very educational, you learn first hand what not to do.
I was watching a LL panel the other day and honestly only two members conducted themselves properly this. While Nico was dancing a solo Kotori was mimicking arm movements from her dance class which is just rude.
A lot of the girls just sat there looking miserable, Umi was laughing at the Rin (who was mvp next to Nico). They hadn't done a sound test so the first few songs only has the backing music and no vocals. Also nobody had tested their costumes prior to that day. Kotori had to take her skirt off mid-dance because it was too big and Nozomi was petrified to move as her top inched it's way down - as a result she was lifeless and another good reason everyone should have basic sewing skills even if you buy everything.

This is only a handful of sins I noticed. I won't post them since it'd feel harsh to do that but so much can be learned from witnessing the mistakes of others. I don't even get why Hanamaru and Ruby are the ones to be featured during the break down, isn't the song meant to be Ruby and Dia focused?

The problem is that good dancing asks a lot of the person's body. It isn't just mimicking a screen, there are a lot of subtle movements involved that require you to be in control of your whole body. As a fatty-chan myself, I know that people who are overweight lack this (most of the time.)
Dancing is a sport. It requires exercise, stamina and muscle control. A lot of people who decide to perform an idol dance in my country lack this.

>> No.9876382

>>9876357

What has weight got to do with anything? There's just as many crappy skinny girls as there are for heavier one. Don't sell yourself or your heavier peers short.
They're often the ones who work harder because they have to prove themselves.

It comes down to the person and their willingness to invest time into their craft, just like anything else - then taking the time to review as they progress. You can't simply learn a dance without watching it yourself and think it's acceptable to present to an audience.

A lot of these girls who have never danced a day in their lives to a pre-choreographed routine or without formal training seem to think that a week spent on a dance or less will get them the best standard. Guess what? That's rarely ever the case.
Girls in actual dance comps i.e not weeb shit, will learn their routines for months ahead of a comp and focus only on that and there's a good reason for it. On the other hand you have groups wanting to get as much 'content' out as humanly possible and churning out less than stellar results.

People who know their bodies and what movements give what effect are capable of this, so I agree with your point about figuring out your body first, but this isn't something you're granted from the beginning and time is your best friend in this case.

I'll give you an example in my next post...

Cont.

Just last night I was teaching my partner a portion of a dance (for the sake of argument its the chorus of a LL dance which are so easy to begin with I wonder why people suck so badly at them anyway.) because they have been interested in learning.
They have a condition that screws with their flexibility and movement range so they wanted to try and see if they can build some strength.
Ten minutes into learning the piece and walking them through it I filmed what they'd done so far. I then showed it to them and asked them where they thought they went wrong.
They point out particular areas, I agree and add on a few other things that they could potentially work on. After that I made them go back and do it again with the new changes.
I filmed them without telling them and they nail all of the points we listed together and it already looks a million times better than a lot of these amateur groups technique (confidence and stage presence aside, because they're not interested in that.)

I doubt that any of these groups even bother to do that, and I think even less have access to a mirror big enough to check themselves as a group. They want a quick result but they don't care about the work needed to be put in.

I was in a few groups and I would search the internet for hours for the best reference to learn from and work on the dance every night without fail. We'd meet up once a month and a lot of the girls had the nerve to only start looking at it the night before and then ask for someone else to teach them parts, and cry when they looked awful.

Another problem that we have is that a lot of these Asian groups are probably know each other personally and can meet up regularly. Whereas America, Eurogulls etc are usually scattered and cant work on it multiple times a week because they can't afford the travel and studio rental costs.

I do commend those who try, but there are a lot of things stacked against these groups, not all of them are up to the task.

If they limited it to only performers that sing and dance, especially their own content, the festivals would have almost no participants. I can really only think of a few solo and group net-idols that are decent at actually singing and performing live, and they don't live anywhere close. Allowing low-effort cosplay and cover groups to dance for these idol shows gives them the participants and audience they need to justify their existence.

Beyond that, it seems to come down to an "original vs fanart" thing, with the fan "art" being the cosplay cover groups. People in general tend to get more excited about things they already recognize. Songs they know the chants to, characters they already like. The amount of effort that goes into original content is so much more than the amount of effort it takes to recreate something that already exists, and the payoff is much less. Original idols don't get fans because they have to start from scratch with a fanbase, whereas Love Live already has millions of fans all over the world, dozens of readily available outfits you can buy from Taobao, and professionally-produced catchy tunes. What original indie/amateur could compare with their own content? I don't much like the situation either, but I understand why groups like this get so much attention. The audience needs to change for anything else to be able to change.

I think they need seperate standard cover dances with LL Cover groups like how Chinese and japanese cons do it. And even then the LL! Dance covers in the Chinese Cons have higher bars of entry to seperate the chaff from the wheat.

Take the FFACG covers seen here >>9873382. The groups covering it had energy, high standards and different ways to seperate themselves from other groups. Aside from Mirai Tocket the groups doing love live covers all did different songs or styled themselves dofferently. They avoided repetition so fans dont get fatigued hearing the same song. The average Love Live Cover performance will do the same song wherever it is Insert Bibi Song here, Kaguya or whatever. Love Live Sunrise is probably my favorite LL cover group! They had a kinda rough start but have improved tons in the time they've been active. My biggest gripe with them has been the camera work for some of their videos - for a while they were using this rocking motion for their covers that made me literally nauseous to watch (like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEO1CJr2Q7k).). It seems they finally found a videographer that knows what they're doing.

Message to the entire net idol community: STOP STOPPING MID DANCE TO BRUSH YOUR HAIR OUT OF YOUR FACE OR ADJUST YOUR CLOTHES. It’s a surefire way to make sure your dance looks sloppy and unpolished. It’s also one of the first things taught in dance and musical theatre. Hair gets stuck to your lipgloss? Too bad, the show must go on. Jacket rides up a little? The show must go on. I like it - this is coming from someone who has done Latin dance though. Some of the steps are taken from some of those styles of dance, however most people who attempt it don't really know how to pull off the movements correctly to give it that overall 'latin' feel.

The best attempt I've seen of it was a video of two girls in the Arabian outfits.(no idea how they made that connection)
The downside is that they had close ups which makes it harder to learn from so everyone uses the shitty covers to perpetuate the cycle.

"They" meaning the one woman trying to run it. Confession time: I was one of the early auditions. I didn't know anyone involved with the project and thought it seemed like a cute idea, but dropped out when I realized how insane and unrealistic it was. Basically the "manager" Lauren kept giving us really stupid "homework" - for example, watching old AKB48 videos and watching an idol we were assigned, then writing up a thing about how that idol was shining on stage and how we could be like that. No actual effort on improving looks, vocals, or dance. She would drop off the face of the planet once in a while because her and her child were living on a friend's couch and she had unreliable internet. She kept saying how eventually she would make a trip out to meet everyone in person...she wanted us to promote in our own cities by performing on the sidewalks and stuff to garner interest in idol culture...the list went on. She really thought she was going to make a nationwide successful idol group. I just thought I'd get the chance to sing some cute original music. I bailed. Wow a rare group that isn't all asians and is actually well practiced, has energy, and respects the original work.

I can definitely tell that they have studied the lives and paid attention to details. My only nitpick would be that some moves seem to have been interpreted a bit wonky, for example the train move in Happy Party Train's chorus seems to always look funny. (To me, it should look like how a train's wheels move more horizontally where as lots of people seem to move their arms more vertically.)

I don't know if I was watching a different cover or something. But I don't think the last one was that bad. When you take into account it's a live performance in a hall way that's being filmed from a bad angle. They're mostly in sync with each other and it's clear they've worked hard and practice together. They are in sync, for the most part, but that's only one part of a performance. Angelic Angel is a slow song, but that doesn't mean you can get sloppy on the moves, and everyone looks pretty sloppy and low energy. There isn't a lot of tightness or precision to the moves, everyone is moving around too loosely. And I'm not trying to be sexist towards the guys in the group, but they look especially awkward and gangly. No one expressions seem to suggest they're having a good time and the cosplays fit awkwardly on most of them. Overall "it could be worse" still isn't enough of a reason to think this is a good cover.

But it's clear they put in some effort, which is more than can be said about a lot of groups that get posted here. Hense why I semi-defended them in the first place.

>> No.9903961

I'm with the anon who doesn't think its unsalvageable, I've definitely seen worse.

I think the main root of the problem is confidence, and if they showed a bit more for this performance it would have improved the presentation. The Nozomi is sloppy with movements but she looks like she's having a good time which saves her from being terrible overall.

The guys, however, especially the Nico are looking at the ground. It's like they're ashamed of doing such a girly dance. Half-assing it is much worse than throwing yourself into the role though so they screwed themselves over.

From looking at them though, this is probably their first real go at performing in public (in costume too) so as far as first performances go this one isn't dire - it's just average.

They're in the right place at the right time and are at the very least doing the right movements, but they just lack conviction which builds with time.
They probably didn't know how to project themselves as a male version of the character either.

These guys do it right and should be what the guys from the Angelic Angel cover should aim to be. One guy has a full on beard but is not just dancing - he's performing.

I don't think it is "problematic" per say but with the amount of immature people and young kids in this community, it will bring up so much unessecary (but funny) drama. I would really want to see one happen but whoever hosts this poll and the groups who win will probably recieve lots of backlash and accusations by those same people who can't handle competition.

I think the /cgl/ idol comm should host one here.
