At the end of the day, there's plenty of people who would think 50% of the stuff in this thread is a 'sex thing'. If it involves thigh highs, pigtails, a school uniform look, or one too many frills... then there are going to be those who believe it has sexual undertones. You know this is true.

I dunno'. Shibari is a bit extreme, but that was a great example of how one would go about wearing shibari to the mall.

I'm gonna use this thread to drop a bunch of undefinable looks that I saved back in like, 2011-2014. I'm nostalgic for these times, it seems like there was more experimentation with everyday clothes that still looked 'different' but weren't from any specific style.

Is it specific looks/shapes/pieces? Is it the brands used? Use of specific motifs? Is it an overall "different" look?
What makes j-fashion "j-fashion" and not just..different/experimental/alternative?

I sometimes have difficulty pinpointing whether something is or not j-fashion because some outfits posted in threads like these (unless they're really specific things like lolita, gyaru, nanchatte, etc) look normie to me, others could easily pass as regular goth, etc etc and if I saw them being worn by a western person and not a japanese person, I'd probably not identify them as "j-fashion" at all.
I assume it differs a lot from person to person since everyone's notion of style varies but I'm honestly very interested in knowing personal opinions.

As simple as can defined jfash = fashion that originates from Japan

The range can vary from normie-looking to the craziest, alternative shit, but if it originates from Japan, it is considered jfash.

That makes sense.
My issue is just that many of the normie-looking styles wouldn't pass as j-fashion at all if worn by westerns. Feels weird to have someone say they are wearing japanese street fashion if they look like they shopped at the local mall.

>>9873713
This helps with the point above but then >>9873803 places a good question against it. I assume Uniqlo outfits have to be considered j-fashion for simply being a japanese brand, even though their clothes are incredibly normie and cater to the general public (and quite boring too imo).

Personally I see "j-fashion" as a term that refers to styles that are distinctly Japanese in origin, whether it's one of the well established styles like lolita, fairy kei, larme, etc., or "general" quirky alt fashion associated with Harajuku and similar areas.
If a specific outfit is H&M tier and normie, it doesn't matter if the pieces originated in Japan because brands don't necessarily determine style, the way one wears the clothes does; if that makes sense. That's how I see it though.

>> No.9874048

>>9874040
That's just your (wrong) opinion. Jfashion literally means Japanese fashion, and that includes normie fashion from Japan. What you're talking about is street fashion, harajuku fashion, and alt fashion.

Question: If something fits what we see as the conventions of (alternative) J-fashion, but the clothing itself is Chinese-made and being worn by a Chinese person, is it not actually J-fashion?
"C-fashion" doesn't really seem to be a "thing" on /cgl/ or the western community in general, but all this stuff about J-fashion strictly meaning all Japanese fashion is making me rethink things.

Yes it's still J-fashion. There's tons of white girls wearing it in this thread, and that doesn't suddenly make it [insert your race here]-fashion based on the person wearing it.

And everything is made in China now. Are Chanel purses now "C-fashion"? No, they're still French even if most of their manufacturing process happens in China. "Point of origin" doesn't mean where the factory is located, it means where the style itself was born.

Then, wouldn't something like Lazy Oaf be considered J-fashion for the obvious style it's based on (and its acceptance as "valid" in the Japanese fashion community via the Tokyo pop-up shop besides Laforet, and endorsement by people like Ayumi Seto)?
And yet, I think most seagulls would side-eye anyone who'd try calling Lazy Oaf J-fashion. Is it because they use non-Asian models primarily? Because if so, that just forces us to question how all of these clothes present on those of us who are non-Asian.

Just normal clothes. I don't really know how to describe them...just not weird leggings and jogging bottoms and uggs or whatever. I'm sure you guys have H&M and Zara over there by now, do people just go in and buy exclusively from their sleepwear range? I always used to think it weird when Americans would say that Europeans were stylish because most of what people wear here is just fast/vintage fashion; but when I actually went to America I began to understand that it was just that their bar is much, much lower than I expected. It's like they literally do not care but taken to a whole different level of not caring, like they buy just anything in their size from the supermarket or something.

Other observations:
-Cargo shorts isn't a meme men genuinely wear them and that is normal as opposed to looking a bit slobby
-Baseball caps are surprisingly common, especially ones that seem really small and dig into the head above the ears
-Everyone has that style of sunglasses that were popular with 13 year olds in the 90s. (The plastic oval shaped ones)
-Typical boy and girl clothing is like athletic wear. You think they're going to the gym but they're just getting in their cars and driving around and stuff.
-There are really groups of guys who wear the "You know I had to do it to em" clothes and they don't seem embarrassed that they all look the same.

Well I got a decent look at both sides of the Cosmopolitan spectrum when I went to America.

-Arizona
-Iowa
-LA
-New York
-Vegas
-Also Canada (Toronto)

It is as the other person replied, it's not as black and white as you think. If you go to a rural village in France of course you won't find people dressed like Parisians, but they don't walk around in dungarees either. Even in places you might stereotypically assume people to be dressed poorly (Not sure if you've been to Ireland in the past 10 years but it's very Cosmopolitan now) you'll find that people have better style. It's not that you'll find expensive clothes in rural France to use your example, but people still make more of an effort than they do in America. It's more about how you wear your clothes as opposed to what you wear. It's hard to describe if you haven't seen it, but put it this way - Very little in this thread would turn heads if worn to a mall in Europe because it's just normal, not so much the styles, which are obviously Japanese ITT but the effort or the garments themselves.

I don't know, it's difficult to explain but it might be the reason why American J-Fashion fans look like they are being worn by their clothes as opposed to wearing their clothes. They either pile everything on haphazardly or they try to coordinate too much and end up looking like they're wearing a costume.

>Clothing is meant to serve a purpose, unless you're weirdos like us that just enjoy the fun of it.
Maybe this is where the mentality comes from. Nobody in my family cares even the slightest bit about fashion but they all look far better than the majority of what I've seen in America. It's not that you need to care about fashion to look good wearing clothes, you just need to...look in the mirror before you leave the house. I mean, I don't know how I can phrase this in a way that doesn't sound bitchy. I'm not trying to be bitchy I just don't understand why you seem to think it's black and white between dressing with no effort and being 'interested in fashion'.

Anyway none of this is meant to be a diss on Americans, it's just an observation.

>> No.9875830

I think it's just more acceptable in America. I haven't travelled a lot but I know at least in my country people will low-key shame you if you just wear yoga pants and no make-up when you leave the house. I'm sure if that didn't happen, people would dress much more lazy here too.

No, /r9k/. Don't join on conversation about women's fashion. All your lot can think of is video games, how much you hate feminism and "tfw no gf", and it leaks into all your posts.

>Very little in this thread would turn heads if worn to a mall in Europe because it's just normal, not so much the styles, which are obviously Japanese ITT but the effort or the garments themselves

Yeah, no. It's not everywhere like this in europe. I invite you to wear any of the corrdinates that aren't black or in any dark or earthen color to a german mall. It will turn a lot of heads, cause most people here are more dressed for comfort than anything else. Anything colorful and/or a bit dressed up will turn heads.

But do you wear yoga pants to the mall in Germany?

>> No.9876409

>sage for off topic
Thinking a bit about this yoga pants thing. I live in a small English village directly above a grocery store and I work from home. So I'll pop to the grocery store in leggings and a baggy t-shirt because that's comfy for working and I'm only going downstairs. But if I'm going to the local town or running more than one errand I'll get "properly" dressed, make up, nice hair etc. because I'd be embarrassed to do anything else. Maybe the way at least suburban America is built this is what's happening?

I know where I live there are those tiny pretty like 15yo girls who'll wear yoga pants and shit because they know they look good in anything and then you get older men and women in athletic gear who clearly don't exercise but they fully commit with earphones and stylish yoga gear. It's all gym stuff but it's put together at least.

Where I live there are people who wear yoga or sweat pants too but the majority of people think they're lazy fucks. I wouldn't let my kid dress that way to leave the house no matter how pretty she is.

No, that's not it at all and I have no idea how you've extrapolated that.

Anon...
You're assuming anyone close to the poverty line (which is most of the people you'd see in yoga pants and looking awful) can afford a stand up mirror. That's 50 bucks minimum to tell you you look like shit.

No, when you're poor you don't really 'get' to value your appearance much since all the nice stuff is expensive, you save that shit for rainy days or your car eats those funds when it throws a rod.

You just don't like what visible lower class looks like, and burgers have been taught to value 'what's on the inside' and just bully each other for thinking/acting the wrong way.

Most people shopping at Wal Mart aren't homeless or death-tier poor, just lazy. Face beat with heavy makeup, but wearing sweatpants and pyjama shirts.
Mirrors come with bathrooms. There are even mirrors in public bathrooms.
Nice, cheap secondhand clothes exist. There is no excuse, America is a land of amenities.
