>translucent clothing or corsets kept an outfit from being lolita
How long ago was this? Sheer fabrics have become a lot more accepted in recent years, and corsets can work perfectly fine in lolita depending on how you wear them.
Likewise with this op, it depends on how you wear it; I think it could go either lolita or aristo, and I'd say it's more lolita in this coord.

I went to my first con recently and was really happy with it. I was supprised how many people wanted to take pics of or with me. Around three dozen and only like 5 were dicks.

My question is about hand placement. Most of the time my hands were on my hips / belt. I had no props. I noticed a verity on hand placements for those asking for pics with me. On my shoulder, hoverhand, buy their side.

Should I just throw my hand on there sholder? I'm cool with them doing it to me so should I initiate contact? I feel like its on me as the cosplayer set the tone.

If you're comfortable with it then sure, do it. Just keep in mind that some people may take it as an invitation to be more handsy with you, and they may be upset if you tell them to stop touching you in a way you didn't ask for.
Not everyone is going to do that, obviously; I'd say most people know what is and isn't appropriate as far as touching goes, but it's important to keep in mind.

The best way to do that is to pick an interesting blouse - Pic related is a few different ideas for blouses that can work in an OTT coord, they either have a lot of detail or several different colors that can match your coord; I went with AP to make thing simpler for me but you can go with any brand that suits your needs.
Another thing you can do is wear large accessories with a blouse that you already have to add interest and detail, like a wide ribbon around your neck, a frilly jabot, an eye catching necklace, etc., and you can also use a bustier (like the Horror Garden one) to play around with layers.

It's a fairly standard headbow, you can look up instructions for other headbows if you're confused. Alternatively, Otome no sewing has much better picture instructions, which will help you out if you have trouble with the basics like this, and then you can come back to the glb patterns later on.

As for pic

- The two rectangles in the middle are the top two layers of the bow. Sew a strip of lace down the middle. Then fold the left and right sides of the bow in towards the centre of the bow, overlapping their edges. The correct side of the fabric and the lace you just sewed should be on the inside. Tuck the lace you want to use for edging the bow in between the fabric layers, fancy side pointing in towards the middle. So all the lace and the right side should be on the inside, pointing inwards. Sew along the top and bottom, sandwiching the fabric, edging lace, then fabric. Then flip it inside out through the hole in the centre (which isn't sewn). The edging lace will flip out onto the right side out.
- The large rectangle on the bottom left is the lowest layer of the bow, same instructions but it doesn't have a strip of lace down the middle, just the edging lace along the sides.
- Stack all three rectangles together, line up their middle but shift them so that each piece is still visible (ie- shift the top further outwards and the bottom further inwards). Then pleat them and hold it in place with a few stitches.
- the rightmost rectangle is the piece that covers the middle of the bow
- the one long rectangle on the top left is to cover the headband with. Sew decorative lace along the upper half, long side of the rectangle. Then fold the rectangle in half and sew along the long edge, turning it into a tube. Turn this tube inside out so that the decorative lace is on the outside, insert headband. Fold the raw edges up twice and stitch in place.
- Attach bow with a few stitches.

Hope that helps.

No. Tea dye usually stains natural fibres, and wigs are normally plastic, which is notoriously hard to dye.

You can try the sharpie dying method. Be warned that the ink may rub off, so if it's a long wig you need to let down and/or you're wearing light colours, it's probably a better idea to look for a more accurate wig.

First time on this board. Wasn't sure where to ask here or in /diy/.

I want to make an opaque visor thing. What I mean by that is it should be opaque and mate, non-reflective on the outside and see through on the inside, so I can see.

How can this be done? I was thinking of making it with a thermo-plastic and then applying some kind of vinyl, but every see through vinyl I find is reflective.

I know there are mate sunglasses, so it's physically possible to have surfaces that are opaque and mate on one side and transparent on the other, but I don't know if it can be done for cheap.

When I first started cosplaying I was young and afraid of messing up with the sewing machine so I only hand sewed. It takes a lot longer and is more uneven, but you can also be more precise with it if you're careful. Right now I'm hand sewing my bias tape trim because I don't want a stitch line on it, and I always hand sew blind hems on circle skirts cause it looks cleaner to me. There's pros and cons to it, but definitely start with enough time to finish if you're only going to hand sew. I moved onto a sewing machine when I was crunching the day before an event and didn't have time to sew it all by hand.

Depends on how much fabric the skirt has, and if the lolita tucks the skirt under her when sitting down (which is recommended etiquette for public spaces).
Narrow A-lines tend to look a bit silly and squished; fuller skirts, when fanned out, look fantastic in my opinion... though again, probably not a good idea in public spaces.

So, regular average sized lolita here. I have a friend who is plus sized who in the past year really started getting into lolita, which made me super excited and happy as she's the only person I know IRL who I could talk about this stuff with. She's bought some Haenuli, made some very decent beginner coords, and was really wanting to get into some brand, and while I wanted to suggest her stuff and asked for her dream items she'd never divulge her measurements (or just never took them?).

She came to me glumly a few days ago and said she took her measurements and wouldn't fit so many of her dream dresses. I feel a bit crappy now, like I've been accidentally bragging every time I talk about how "oh this old AP skirt gives me a bit of a muffin top", etc - I fit pretty much everything except older items and have never really looked into what plus girls would fit. I want to help her out since she's new and help her figure out what she'll fit, or if she really just needs to stick to Taobao and indies.

She's about 165 tall and 112 bust, 94 waist, shoulders 45 wide (though maybe she bungled shoulders up since I did my first time, she's not a broad person but maybe I just don't really realize since I've known her for so long). Will she fit fully shirred items? Full back shirred AP? Examples of dream dresses of hers she thinks she has to give up are Dream Marine and French Cafe, though they have full back shirred cuts - does she indeed have to give up on them? I don't go for shirred stuff much and honestly don't know, sorry if this is all dumb to ask.

In less of a charitable thought for her, Holy Lantern's zipper JSK is another item she really wants someday and I do own it from the latest MTO - at my 86 / 66 measurements it's actually a bit too big and puffy. For fully shirred AP your bust should be under 110 cm, for full back shirring I’d say under 105 cm. I used to have a 114 cm bust and it was a bitch and a half removing my fully back shirred AP. When I got down to a 95 cm bust I still couldn’t fit into some older fully shirred pieces. If you scroll down some older ita threads you can see how horrific it looks when a very large girl wears fully shirred AP.

If she really wants to wear AP she should perhaps make an effort to lose some weight. Not trying to be a bitch here. I got motivated to lose the weight because I couldn’t fit into my dream dress at the time which was Fancy Box.

Thanks for the responses! Not bitchy at all - this is cgl after all, and this is a fashion for small asian women. She's tried to lose weight before so I do hope this fashion would encourage that. I think it's a good sign that she isn't buying stuff anyways thinking "I won't change weight so maybe I can fit if I just squeeze right".

Personal opinion here that I think full bodice shirring is absolutely ugly on anyone, so it's good to hear that with a sports bra she might be able to fit some newer back shirred pieces! I'll pass this on. I do really hope her fitting at least some things and experiencing the quality of brand will really encourage her to lose some weight.

So I've been a fan of Sakizou's artwork since my weeb years and I've always dreamed of cosplaying one of her designs. I've found someone who's selling a version of this specific design and I'm definitely interested!

I'm just mildly concerned about wearing it to a con though. Will people think it's weird that I'm not cosplaying from an anime/manga/videogame?? Or will people just think I'm cosplaying as some fancy version of Tinkerbell??

>> No.9866871

>>9866856
In my experience it's equal parts consistent buying, luck, careful coordinating, and not caring so much:
First, consistent buying: If you buy from one brand regularly, the chances your whites will match are higher. Not always guaranteed, but higher. Sometimes off whites will match well between different brands too, which brings me to the next point:
Luck, which is pretty obvious: Cross your fingers and hope for a match when you buy new pieces. Sometimes pieces will match remarkably well even if they're from different sources, so it's not hopeless. Paying attention to whether the whites are described in the listing as white, off white, or beige/cream/"kinari" helps a lot but again, it doesn't always guarantee a match.
Careful coordinating and not caring so much go hand in hand, in a way: If white lace on a JSK doesn't match the white of the blouse, it looks off and bothers me a lot. But if the only white parts of the coord are significantly distant from one another (i.e. the blouse/collar and socks), the difference in shade between them is a lot less obvious and much easier to tolerate.
Of course this is wildly different if we're talking about shiro coords, but these are the things I take into account in general.
I hope that made sense and helped you somewhat.

What’s a good Walmart generic makeup I could use for this guy? I honestly can’t even tell eyeliner from maskera but I’m gonna try to do it for this cosplay, my eyelashes are naturally very long and full if that helps. My skin tone is the same as his as well.

what /cgl/ things can men do?

>> No.9869040

>>9869021
Eyeliner is basically what it sounds like - You use it to line your eyes. I suggest going for a felt tip liner, it's basically like a felt tip pen and quite easy to use. Mascara has a spool-like brush that makes your eyelashes thicker and appear longer; not an absolute necessity but a little bit can go a long way so I'd recommend it too.
Otherwise, I suggest picking out a primer to make your skin smooth and even, foundation or bb cream depending on how even or uneven your skin tone is (foundation can cover blemishes better; bb cream is light but still evens out your skin), and translucent powder or setting spray to make sure your makeup stays in place.
Nyx has pretty good products and is quite affordable; you can always just order it from eBay or something if it isn't readily available where you live, but I recommend buying foundation/bb cream from a brick and mortar store so you can be sure it matches your skin tone.
And finally, watch youtube tutorials and practice application. If this is your first time doing makeup you'll need the practice, but you'll get better at it the more you try.

If you like alternative fashion, look up styles of j-fashion, there are many styles to pick from and they're not exclusive to girls.

Replicas are cheap imitations of brand designs, kinda like "bootlegs", if you will. There are replicas of non-printed dresses too, and while they're not as problematic as print replicas, people may still judge you for getting them.

Anyway, pic related is an extreme example to illustrate the differences: The easiest way to tell a replica from a legitimate piece is the lace, which is often terrible quality, not gathered (which means there's less of it, indicating the corner-cutting, cheap construction of the dress), but there are other ways to tell if the dress is legit such as the fit, the shape of the bows or the ruffles, whether the dress has a lopsided silhouette when worn with a petticoat (again, indicating the dress was cheaply made), faded colors/discoloration (one lolita once said that a replica maker has sent her a dress with green lace instead of brown), etc.
Some replicas are worse than others and easier to spot, but once your eye is trained to recognize differences in quality you'll be able to tell them apart quite easily.

Accuracy, for one, and also just general aesthetic. What I mean is that even if you buy a character-specific wig, it likely has parts that need to be modified to suit your face shape, like bangs. Unstyled wigs look sloppy and terrible, and it makes you look like you don't care to put an effort into your cosplay which isn't something you want.

People do wax brows, so it works for face, but you might have issues finding a salon that will do a beard waxing. Actually I don't know if it'll remove hair or just rip your face off, ha.

You could probably get most of the hair out in one sesion, if you can stand the pain. I'd recommend doing a test run way before the convention, though. I have zero issues with waxing but some of my friends have red bumps for a couple of days and there's one friend who is just allergic to whatever stuff is in the wax, you don't want to deal with weird skin rashes that on the day of the convention.

Also keep in mind you need a little bit of hair for the wax to hold on to in order to rip the hair out, which means growing out a little bit of your stubble in order to wax it off.

If it's just one gi, you can use fabric paint or fabric marker. Fabric paint would be easier to find and you can mix colours together to get what you want, but you'd have to be fairly skilled in painting them on. You can draw on the fabric lightly with pencil, then wash away the pencil markings after you're done setting the paint/marker. Be careful with stencils, a common problem is the paint getting under the edge of a stencil and overflowing the lines that way.

The texture of a gi is going to make it difficult to apply either fabric paint or fabric marker, so try to be patient and go slow. With fabric paint, try to make sure you're painting into the fabric, they tend to form a kind of film, if the paint doesn't "stick" to the fabric they tend to peel right off. Avoid puffy paint or any textured fabric paint, they're the worst for this.

With fabric marker sometimes the ink doesn't flow fast enough so you may have to go slow and/or redraw the lines several times.

Be sure to read instructions and follow them. Generally you have to iron them at a specific temp to set them.

If you have multiple gi, the better solution is to find a screenprinter to do the designs for you. Generally the screen costs a fair bit to make, so it's not a good solution for just one gi.

If your gi has the vent at the waist of the pants, I'd also like to recommend wearing white shorts underneath them for a cleaner look.

Are knock offs still considered respectable? Not talking about the quality, just in terms of intellectual property.

>> No.9876546

>>9876534
Replicas were never respectable, only vaguely tolerated because of "budget lolitas" somehow justifying stealing original designs because they gotta have their Ay Pee; that is, until AP got a bee in their bonnet and contacted the mods on EGL with a demand to ban replica-related content in 2012.
The only legally okay replicas are design replicas (i.e. non printed pieces, shoes, bags, etc. that don't feature original designs or logos) but some people frown on those too, especially if the quality is terrible, and it is in most cases.

Bottom line is: You can buy whatever you want, it's your money, but replicas are and always were trashy as hell and you likely will be judged for it, even if not to your face.

Sponges will work well with grease paint, try to find a sponge coarser than a make-up sponge. I learned to paint with potter's sponges cut in half or in fourths. Really load up your sponge and pat the paint onto your skin, don't smear.

If you really want to try brushes, go to the water color/oil painting section of your local craft store and pick up some of those brushes. Flat brushes are good for larger areas, round brushes are good for detail work. Sable (or other real fur) brushes are great to work with, but more expensive.

If you're just trying to bruises, you could even just use your fingers.

Sew the fabric to a scrap of craft foam where you want the pieces to attach, then use hot glue to attach the scrap side of the foam to whatever foam pieces you have. This is because you can easily bond two pieces of craft foam together with hot glue (or superglue, but not actually as strong under movement stress), but neither of those glues stick well to fabric. The middle piece of foam is the key here and it hides your stitches this way.

What's the best way to go about collecting all GLB volumes (or at least the earlier ones)? Are they likely to be found in used Japanese bookstores? I've been looking around online and I'm not sure whether waiting for a big lot to pop up vs. buying them individually would work out cheaper in the end.

>> No.9879973

>>9879972
I've bought them individually and collected the first 20 very easily. Sometimes you have to wait until a specific volume comes up for sale for a decent price but they always do eventually, just a matter of patience; I've gotten all my volumes for dirt cheap, most of them in like new condition with the patterns and stickers included, including the very first one.
If you buy a big lot you can save on costs for the volumes themselves, but shipping is going to be a bitch and a half because these things get pretty heavy. Imo buying individual volumes or small lots is better; when you do this you can pick and choose which ones will be shipped to you and when so shipping is more manageable, if you know what I mean.

I have, twice. The first prop I got from them was decent quality but because it was an umbrella sword from hxh (wood blade), either customs snapped it, or it broke in transit but it was hard to tell by the box. I repaired it with glue and worbla, it still looks good in photos and I couldn't have made it myself.

I also have a costume on the way but the tracking says I'll get it tomorrow, I can update on quality and custom sizing later.

They seem to ship a mass order in parts, I already got my wig 2 weeks ago, and the small prop a few days later. (It was Denki's earpiece from BNHA). I was disappointed by the earpiece, it's literally craft foam and a chopstick for an antenna, I could have made it myself.

I am waiting on a set of armor from them and it hasn't come yet, but my deadline is A-kon so I will share updates between now and then. It seems they are reliable, but quality is a mixed bag.

No need to apologize, it's alright! I found mine on yahoo auctions; I've looked on other sites too but finding them there was easiest for me. Just search for ゴシック&ロリータバイブル and look around for the ones you want.
I've gotten mine for less than 1,000 yen each, the most expensive one was 700 or 800 yen I think.
Also, a few more tips: If you see many listings belonging to one seller, you should look in their profile and see if they have the volumes you're after, it's easier than combing through searches; and if you buy several volumes from one seller, you can save on shipping within Japan.
You can also compare prices between sellers and see who has the cheapest volumes, just be sure to read the listings and see if they mention any damages or missing patterns because cheaper isn't always better.

Good luck! And fair warning: Collecting GLBs is addictive.

Any sewing anons out there that can offer me some advice please? I’m having some issues with the tension on my sewing machine, it was sent for a tune up only a month or so ago and the tension is horrifically temperamental. It will sew a nice straight even stitch and then bunch up a little along the way and continue normal again. Am I just being stupid and not setting tension correctly (I have done multiple tests with multiple settings and this is the only decent stitch I can get out of the machine, rethreaded both the top and bottom of the machine etc) or shall I send it back to get looked at?

to really test it out i recommend setting everything to normal, both upper and lower tension, using a new needle with average weight thread, and stitching on cotton. You could even stitch on paper. Make sure nothing is getting stuck on your machine, or your needle, make sure it’s correctly inserted. Just undo everything a few times if you need to, that’s what I did when I had tension issues because it could be any one thing messing it up.

Not to say that gothic lolita can't possibly be cute, but are you using the term to refer to the entire fashion or do you actually mean gothic lolita specifically?

Anyway, regardless of my own stupid question,
>some guides I find have shit that /cgl/ says are stupid to do
Which guides are those?
This is a post on what not to do, rather than what to do, but it might give you an idea of what to avoid when you're just starting out: http://www.fyeahlolita.com/2009/10/how-to-avoid-being-ita.html
Can you be more specific on what look you're going for, what guides you've seen that you're unsure of, and what your concerns are? Because at the end of the day it boils down to
>research what is and isn't lolita
>research where to buy lolita
>compare your measurements to the clothing sizes
>buy things that fit you and match one another
>research lolita-appropriate makeup and hairstyles
>practice application/hair styling if necessary
>wear the clothes, apply makeup, fix your hair
Which might seem like easier said than done but it does get this easy the more familiar you are with this fashion.

>> No.9881060

>>9881050
I have a habit to call things cute even if it isnt conventionally attractive, oops.
From being on here I have a vague idea where to buy things and threads pop up with brand names and links and I'm aware of the lolilibrary
My biggest issue is being afraid of mismatching and being labeled ita I guess. And I can't link to guides since I haven't been here in a few months so they've all saged and are somewhere in the archives. I should say that I'm completely new and haven't approached buying lolita ever but have just admired from afar and, recently came across a stable job so I want to splurge on myself and get pretty clothes. I do know how to apply makeup and style my hair, and measure myself

A more specific question is are there any gothic lolita guides out there for beginners or something?

>> No.9881078

>>9881060
I don't think there are any beginner guides specific for gothic lolita, but there are plenty of guides for beginners that are easy to apply to any style, like this one: http://www.fyeahlolita.com/2012/05/building-complete-lolita-wardrobe.html
(F Yeah Lolita in general is a great resource for information)
Other than this, I suggest you find gothic lolitas whose style you like and relate to, see what they do and how they wear their pieces, and use that as inspiration and a sort of "visual guide" on what looks you may want to wear yourself.

Gothic lolita can have sharp and clean lines; it can be fancy and opulent; it can be frilly and cute, and it can be simple and more "toned down". It can draw inspiration from visual kei, porcelain dolls, nuns, even western goth imagery, and many other sources.
The point is, there are a lot of looks and ways to go on about gothic lolita so you should look around and see what others are doing, take your own tastes and inspiration into consideration, and above all - Don't be afraid of making mistakes.
I understand not wanting to be ita, few people actively choose that, but mistakes are a part of learning, and might actually be the most important and efficient way to learn. Plus, if you're already familiar with fashion, makeup and aesthetics, I'm sure you'll do just fine.

They are a reliable company, they just don't send out periodic updates or anything. I also feel like their props may be a mixed bag when it comes to quality, depending on what you are ordering. Good luck, I hope you like what you are thinking of ordering!

I'm about to put up my first listing on LM and was wondering what shipping methods do others use when shipping within the US? Flat rate boxes or polymailers or whatever? I'm a literally moron who has never shipped a package before let alone clothing (just a blouse but still).

Where to buy fairytale wallpaper?
pic related

>> No.9884227

>>9884217
Just so you know, that isn't wallpaper, it's a giant book used as background for photoshoots at Maison de Julietta.
But anyway, I don't know about wallpaper but you may be able to create a similar look with vinyl wall decals; I haven't looked myself but I'm sure there are some classical fairytale themed ones out there.

Either. This is how I do it:
Offer insurance or no insurance
Require tracking as it’s an important seller protection and it gives the buyer some peace of mind
I would seal the blouse into a plastic bag of some sort (after you wash and dry it) and then use a bubble mailer since it will probably go pretty flat. If there are parts that can’t be squished for whatever reason then a box will be better.
In the US you should ship first class unless the buyer requests faster ship, then the flat rate boxes aren’t a bad idea. Finally, if they are overseas the USPS or FedEx or UPS will have information on how they do that.

This is assuming you’re American but be packaging still holds anywhere

I have extra straight hair, think 1A,and I just got my first AP set (Toy Parade 2012 jsk in black) I feel like the KC is too tall in contrast with my hair ,so I thought about doing something like pic related(probably without curling my hair since it wouldn't hold, just the buns). Would the buns go in front of or behind the headboard?

You mean the headbow? The buns go behind it. I suggest you make them far apart from one another so they can be seen from the either side of the bow, kinda like bear ears.

How do I use liquid white facepaint with a kabuki brush without it ending up cakey or layers that look off instead of smooth? Also what do I do with the lips? They are also white on the character and I don't know what to do with them to not look awful. And I have no clue what to use to give the lips a somewhat 'natural' look back.

To make things worse... I have dark skin. So I'm unsure if I should even do the cosplay. Don't want to end up in one of those bad make up threads.

Use a good sponge and dab the makeup on, rather than 'paint' it on. Layer slowly to give yourself good coverage, then use a setting powder and finish spray.

Your overall skin quality will affect the application as well so make sure you moisturize and use a good primer.

Like, with them as they cosplay or just owning them?
I own anime plushes but I can't think of a time where people would go to a con with a plush unless they bought it AT the con, or if it's a part of their cosplay say, a character who holds a plush rabbit or the likes.

I sometimes rarely see people holding the mini plushie of themself, the cheapie prize type with the felt hair typically. It’s more common with “chibi” looking characters. I’ve seen it with Hetalia (barf) a couple times as well.

But there’s lots of characters holding a plushie of a plushie they use in the show or of a relevant character. So, Mami Tomoe holds Bebe, Madoka holds Kyuubey, and lots of characters have rabbit plushies. I’ve also seen a few yandere characters caring a plush of their crush from the show.
