Aprons have been worn as purely decorative pieces too though. Atleast in my culture women wouldn't leave house without one because it was considered indecent and going without one would be a signal to men to harras the woman. It was a staple piece on formal wear too.

I used to work at a tea shop where we dressed very typical British maid, a la Downton Abby. We where given these very nice lace aprons for our uniform. I left the restaurant, but I kept the apron. Now I keep it in my purse and I use it for when I eat in lolita. It is on point ascetically and since I'm a slob keeps all my lolita spotless.

have you honestly never paid any attention to lolita dresses? lots of brands have vertical ruffles. Just speaking of my own right now, some of my AP, Meta, and Baby dresses have vertical ruffles. look at APs Shoulder Ribbon JSK, for instance. Quite a few of them have that feature.

Aprons are so useful as a Gothic Lolita with 3 dogs. Like, I love you giant puppies, but you shed like motherfuckers and not on my brand please. Also, I live in the country; helps protect my brand from the elements in spring and summer when I don't want to wear a coat.
They're relatively easy to sew, I'll make one with cheap, black cotton sheeting (like 150cmx200cm); they're great for travelling to meets and they're easy enough to fold up and put in my handbag.
But I do carry massive handbags orz
