Really from his work and the interactions i've had he seems like he's obsessed with a vision of cosplay pics as a modern version of classical art. And that he sees himself as the cosplay successor to DaVinci or Michelangelo. Like his Rey shoot he researched for months traveling to find the best location.

In theory that's admirable. In practice it comes out as scarily intense, elitist and alienating.

Cosplay now is for fun or for business. Fun cosplayers he won't shoot unless they fit his aesthetic, and business cosplayers don't need him because getting the perfect Rey background doesn't sell on Patreon.

Really he either needs to diversify and shoot other types of people or worsify and shoot patreon sets. Because pursuing a specific style of art doesn't work in Aus.

For me, I don't see that when people wear heels or platforms that it ruins the accuracy of the cosplay. I've shot cosplayers in them and it makes a difference in the overall shots, especially when the shots include a group. Height makes a difference, better than having some cosplayers bending to be shorter when standing next to a cosplayer being a taller character.
Then again, why are people actually focusing on the footwear of cosplayers? Who gives a shit really. Guys paint on beards, girls wearing fake boobs to match a character, guys in muscle suits or put on makeup for abs abs. Everything is adding something in the end.
Though I admit it is ridiculous when someone wears an extremely disproportionate platforms or heels that end up not matching the rest of the outfit due to the person's actual height or quality of the outfit. Shoot in RAW, gives you more options when editing in post production.
Understand the difference in aperture, don't just keep your camera on auto, especially when taking cosplay photography at a con, no one needs the boring background or other con goers in focus.
Don't be afraid to ask cosplayers to pose differently or move around to get better lighting, it will pay off for both them and you if you get a better shot.

Shooting in RAW is perfect. The best point is also to not shoot in auto mode. Learning on manual makes you get familiar with everything in the camera. Over time, you won't need to keep taking time to calculate what you need or things like that, you tend to pick up on what settings to put yourself once you get the hang of shooting in manual. Plenty of resources on youtube, not just for cosplay photography, but learning about portraiture and composition will make you stand out from all the beginners and amateurs.

Yea defs on using Lightroom. Shooting RAW makes best use of it with all the information in the shots to work on nicely. Photography friendly and perfect for color grading and adjusting lighting. It has more tools than some photogs realize.

There are unique ways on setting up your focus while on manual mode by locking it in. Depends on your camera. Auto isn't what determines your focus anyways.
Practice out of cons, on the streets etc. Plenty of time in between cons to carry the camera around and do people photography or just street work.
Main things you need to keep in mind would be your shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Once you got them down, and know how they'll affect your lighting in the end result, then it's easier to take control of your shoots to develop your style. Auto is just what the camera brand thinks is going to be good based on what the lens sees. Not always perfect that way.

oh yeah I found the con security to be stricter than any other brisbane based event. I had a blunt staff that was under a metre with no sharp edges or anything remotely 'dangerous' and the door guy said that it could be used as a weapon and had to go into weapons check if i wanted to go into the hall. Except that isn't true. Most Love Live cosplayers who make their costumes to a high standard and enter competitions are recognized for their efforts where it's deemed worthy. An LL cosplayer literally came third in MNCC last year.
So, maybe your problem lies elsewhere? Judging by your attitude, you seem to think making an LL cosplay = you being entitled to winning a competition because it makes you better. Perhaps take a step back and evaluate your skills, rather than blaming others.

A lot of his stuff seems mashed together and lauded in the spirit of ‘Macgyver’, but to me that just sounds sloppy. I feel that he spent more time blingeing it up rather than make the costume structurally sound or actually able to move in.

He did a side-by-side comparison or his costume and the reference picture, and you can see how out of proportion everything is. Not saying that he didn’t do a lot of hard work, because he did, especially with all that leather work, but I think that this guy has his priorities wrong when it comes to costumes, choosing to go for bling rather than accuracy.

Personally I don’t much care for a lot of his costumes because they’re sloppily put together. I saw his Venosaur over East and it looked like baby’s first cosplay with how quickly he put it together.
