What do you think of casual lolita?
Do you think it's okay to wear to (big) meets?

>Do you think it's okay to wear to (big) meets?
I think it's like any other kind of social gathering; you wouldn't wear jeans and a t shirt to a fancy event, so you probably shouldn't wear a simple skirt and a cutsew to a fancy tea party. You can do it, no one will kick you out, but you'll look very underdressed and generally look like you missed the point of the event.

I do love casual lolita though; it's kind of a must for daily wear, but at the same time it's got its own charm, like it looks more "natural" and a little more like "real" clothes compared to fancier stuff, if that makes sense.
Not a fan of the strange perception that some people have of it though, that you supposedly can look like shit wearing frumpy/ill fitting things and get away with it because it's a casual coord. I'm not even sure where this came from, it's as if people got so used to fancy OTT coords that they forgot how (or never even tried) to dress simply, and that kind of makes me sad.

Last time I went to a big lolita event , there was someone wearing a cutsew dress. It was very cute and didn't look out of place at all. Casual lolita isn't comparable to wearing jeans to a fancy place imo. The point of big meets/events isn't to dress OTT, it's to meet special guests and stuff.

I actually prefer casual lolita to more ott styles. Ott is nice and looks good, and it's fun to put together an elaborate coord for a tea party or something, but I often see people who only wear ott lolita and don't know how to wear or coord it as an everyday fashion. Lolita fashion is so versatile and beautiful and I think it's a shame it isn't worn more as an everyday fashion. There's a lot of pressure within the lolita community to have the biggest poof or hat or the most ostentatious coord, and the coords that get the most likes on CoF are usually the big ott coords, so I think newbies see this and think that ott is the only way to wear lolita, which is just so sad to me.

With every new Casual Lolita thread the line between casual and just normal non-ott lolita keeps getting more and more blurry.
To me like at least a third of coords posted here are not casual, they're just lolita coords. There's nothing casual about >>9842219 or >>9842216 (they're a bit plain because there's only so much you can do with a long-sleeved OP, but plain coords are not inherently casual).

>the important thing is wearing a cutsew or cardigan instead of a blouse
>wearing a cardigan instead of a blouse
What if you wear a cardigan OVER a blouse like >>9842144 or >>9842286 because it's cold outside? Again, a simple but well-balanced and polished coord does not automatically become casual if you slap a cardigan onto it. I'd agree about other types of outerwear, like hoodies or biker jackets, but there's nothing inherently casual about cardigans.
This is all just my opinion, of course, feel free to disagree. It just saddens me that, while the general trends have been shifting from OTT to a more normal, "traditional" wearable style, said wearable style continues to be lumped in with casual, which I think it is not.

So what specifically makes a coord a "casual lolita" coord and not just a normal wearable coord? Some people in this thread are saying that coords with cutsews, flat/comfy shoes, and minimal accessories are the tenets of casual lolita. However, I've seen coords like Fanny Rosie's coords or pic related that are described as casual.
Is it the overall "feel" of a coord, or the specific clothing items used (skirt, cardigan/bolero, cutsew, etc) that make it "casual lolita?"
Perhaps the definition of casual lolita has changed somewhat with the rise of OTT, since less fancy/more wearable everyday coordinates seem casual in comparison to OTT.

It doesn't matter to me, I agree with >>9842375 just using a certain type of item (cutsew, cutsew OP, cardigan) automatically makes a coord casual. I agree with what >>9842382 and >>9842396 say, it becomes casual if you pair lolita with comfy non-lolita items like hoodies, T-shirts, comfy shoes, etc.
Cutsews I think can't be 100% categorized as either a casual or non-casual item, because some cutsews look more like a blouse with a fancy collar and sleeves, and some look like straight up burando T-shirts. Also cutsews can look very different with a JSK and a skirt.
IDK man, I just think it's wrong to try and define casual lolita with a set of check boxes, like does it have a cutsew? Does it have a cardigan? Because things like that are highly debatable.
I think >>9842396 came up with the closest definition of what items make a coord casual that I agree with.

>>9842389
Naw, I'm more of a newfag so I don't associate casual lolita with oldschool. I think you can very easily wear a cutsew OP in a casual way (for example with sandals or cute slip-ons), but as stated above I don't agree that a cutsew OP is inherently casual - you can take it and dress it up or down.
Like I said, it's just how I feel about calling specific things casual, not saying everyone has to agree.

While I agree with you, I would wager that everyone has at least a few regular/plain non OTT coords tucked in their casual folder.
All of this is very nebulous.

About the coords that get posted here mistakenly.
They aren't casual, they're lolita for sure, but they are more wearable than most of the rest of the fashion.
They just look comfortable and you can imagine they'd be more accepted when worn out.
Regardless of the initial punk intent to stand out, 'casual lolita' I think fits that niche of wanting to wear lolita clothes, look put together, but worry less about negative attention.

We have this gripe every thread, we discuss it every thread, is there really anything else to discuss?

but it's not that nebulous. most coords posted in this thread are casual lolita, only a few of them aren't and they've already been pointed out. there are more newfags posting the wrong thing in this thread compared to threads for other substyles, because they get less exposure to casual lolita compared to other substyles. that's because people don't tend to post their casual lolita coords online.

>> No.9842506

>We have this gripe every thread, we discuss it every thread, is there really anything else to discuss?

I mean, I've already admitted to being on the newfag side, so I guess sorry for wanting to discuss something that's been discussed before?
Culture shapes the mind and then the mind shapes the culture, so the distinction between "casual coords & comfortable coords that can be worn casually" is interesting for me to discuss, like >>9842389 said, the perception of what is casual lolita is changing over time, and, among other things, these threads affect that perception and how it shifts.
I know some people come to threads like this to look at pic dumps, but that's not as interesting to me, I can google some images at any moment, if a thread is interesting to me I like to talk about stuff.
It's more fun to me than just idly watching the dumps slide by until all of it inevitably drowns in someone's vendetta.

>> No.9842511

nothing in lolita is formulaic when you think about it like that. you see the same type of arguments with newfags arguing about all black sweet coords in the gothic thread.

Imo cutsew dresses are now included in casual lolita, but the standard look is still skirt + t-shirt/cutsew. It just changed to include more things, just like all other lolita substyles have evolged with new fabrics and prints.

A lot of people tag their coords with casual lolita even though it isn't.

It is also what I think of when I hear 'casual' in regards to lolita. It still looks lolita, but it looks comfy and easy to wear. Quite a few of the things in this thread don't even look lolita, despite having a lolita brand piece. I wouldn't call that casual lolita at all. It still has to be lolita to be casual lolita.

How did we forget what casual lolita was in the transition between Livejournal and Facebook? I remember on egl/daily_lolita, casual lolita was never a hot button issue. Mininal accesories, flat shoes, a simple hairstyle or natural colored wig, presence of a cardigan or cutsew instead of a blouse, usually skirts or JSKs instead of OPs, light makeup, a bit less "polished" than a perfect coordinate. I also would say proper casual lolita isn't going to be heavy with pints either. Like this: >>9842096 seems more busy than >>9842107 because of the formers use of printed tights. I think the actual design of the dress or skirt needs to come into factor as well. There are some dresses that just cannot be worn in a casual way because of all the extra frills and bows and lace tacked onto it.

A lot of the outfits in this thread, imo, are either straight up lolita (like >>9842229, which is an example of a dress too busy to wear casually) or lolita items worn in a non lolita context (like >>9842184)

From a 2006 post on egl
>Casual Loli in my eyes is about keeping the essential aesthetics of the fashion itself but being slightly more relaxed on certain points! Things like Petticoats, Bloomers, Knee High Socks, Headdress etc... Are not be worried about, but it's still really important to keep the overall shape of the fashion, like you said, certain things can be altered to suit your daily routine, like having T-Shirts instead of full blown blouses but the correct length of skirts & such like are still to be kept in mind…

Lolita has changed since the old-school days. If AP's most popular cut is high-waisted OPs (to the point they don't even release skirts anymore) it's only logical that pic related is meant as casual lolita. Even their cutsews often have chiffon parts now and they don't release t-shirts and parkas anymore.

Bottom half looks fine, the shoes work if you are inspired by old school or punk. Agree that the top needs more ruffles. Two pink hair ties from BABY or similar and a fake collar (or even just a necklace with ribbon/s like image) would have made this coord a really cool casual. I'd nitpick the length of the shirt, but it is fitted to not interfere with the silhouette so I'll let it slide.

I'm a gothic lolita, and imo, it's so much more difficult to do casual gothic. A big part of casual, for me, is using solids instead of prints, and gothic already tends to focus more on construction and structure, so even the less dressy stuff is going to be pretty fancy to normies.

Normie standards aren't really relevant here, to be fair.
It depends a lot on what kind of gothic lolita you wear, but Moitie has released plenty of cutsews, and some old brand cutsews feature gothic designs... and you can also wear something like pic related and it's perfectly fine for casual gothic.

She normally looks incredibly elegant, but I suppose it's true that nothing and no one is perfect, and sometimes experienced lolitas stumble too.

this looks so awkward imo, it's like the clothes are wearing her and not the other way around. it honestly looks like a lolita told her normie sister to raid her lolita closet and this is what the sister came up with.

I think it's the cardigan and scarf together with that pose and picture quality. It looks like something that would've been posted on myspace. It's not bad and it's even cute in a nostalgic way imo, but it looks super outdated.

The simple tank top(?) isn't helping, either.

I think it's a mix of the analogous color scheme and using a combination of black and white accent pieces? I don't hate it, but I think it could be improved.

She's not wearing anything black or white, just brown and some beige.

It's probably the monitor I'm using. Still not an overall fan, but that makes it seem better.

It saddens me that more than half of this thread is just regular non OTT lolita, not casual lolita..

>> No.9891236

>>9890850
People have different ideas of what constitutes as casual; someone who's used to wearing OTT would see regular, basic lolita coords as casual because they don't incorporate giant hair accessories/veils/underskirts etc., whereas someone who wears lolita regularly might think that the cutsew+skirt combination is what casual is.
In the same vein, normies can look at an actual casual lolita coord and think it's dressed up and fancy. It's a matter of perspective, really. If you have pics of coords that you find casual, you're free to post them.
