Did anyone notice that the bag she said that about was literally the exact same bag she turned around and said was okay for oldschool? Just in bxb instead of bxw. Girl needs to learn more about oldschool than just copying snaps.

>> No.9822691

>>9822657
she said she realized after but the point still stands that Milk bags and other plain heart bags have been around for ages and aren't just a new thing. Same with her statement about no one ever using thicker stripes with plaid, her own street snap flickr she linked has several photos with thicker striped socks and a few even paired with plaid.
It's sad that after all this research she doesn't feel comfortable making her own coords yet. there's nothing wrong with wanting to stay true to the era but streetsnaps only make up a percentage of the outfits that existed in that era, there were probably thousands of outfits that never made it to the internet with all sorts of creative elements.

>but streetsnaps only make up a percentage of the outfits that existed in that era, there were probably thousands of outfits that never made it to the internet with all sorts of creative elements.
Wasn't the case with Fruits they did only photograph lolita because it was so popular and then only the most "out there" coordinates? Didn't the editor say lolita is booring? However, I'm still quite confident only more interesting coords got usually picked. Sad thing is, we will never know what was actually worn outside of streetsnaps.

I think a good addition to Ophelia's definitions of era would be picking few trends or points of each era that make a coord come accross more as intended. Like popular color combos, shoe styles and patterns. Shame she didn't take her definition into the video, it would have been both helpful and probably helped her to word herself better.

The photographer didn’t liked Lolita, so there are only a few who made it to the magazine. I feel that the ones who were also were a bit more experimental compared to the snaps from Kera and GLB. But it’s indeed hard to find out what was worn outside of these streetsnaps. There is a 30 years of Lolita exhibition soon, but I doubt that people would have send in personal photos. But who know, maybe we will see something new.

Even street snaps she seems uninformed about, with how basic her coords are.

There is such a huge variety in oldschool, it's not all ringlets/ teased curls and black/white/red. There was classic, gothic, random mismatched shit, some of it was so punk and fun, while others were emulating beautiful princesses. Her style and the other lolitas in her video miss the mark by so much

>> No.9823669

So many people jumped down her throat picking apart every thing she said and the way she said it, there was a lot more negative feedback than there was positive, or just constructive. Everybody knows she lurks so people knew she was gonna see it when they wrote stuff like "the video was excruciating", if someone said stuff like that about something I made I'd feel the urge to take it down as well.
>inb4 "you need a thick skin for cgl"
How about no. This is a prime example of how the gulls' inability to have a civil and constructive conversation killed a potentially interesting initiative.
To those who bitched about Ophelia trying to be a guru or whatever just for sharing her experience and having an opinion - congrats, we're back to no one doing nothing. Yippee.

I get the feeling some people just really want to hate on this girl for some reason, probably doesn't matter what she says or does they're gonna hate anyway.
Those people submitted those pictures, they knew they may get critique from her.
I didn't agree with everything she said in her video, but I'm a grown up and I can deal with different opinions without tearing someone a new asshole or stamping my feet like a stroppy toddler.
Didn't think her video was all that bad, she just shared her opinions ffs, everyone is allowed to have their own opinions and share them.

y'all suck
I don't have enough energy to WK and rebut the things that were clear if you were paying attention to the video all the way through (like her nitpicking wide stripes for herself included, and how MILK made plain bags that size but not with metallic handles (she commented later that it wasn't until after publishing that she realized it was the backside of a BtSSB ribbon heart bag)).

>>9826584
I don't see how you were expecting that when there was a call for people to submit their coords for her to analyze. that was the purpose of the video, to look at coords for the old feel/vibe, and also check for historical accuracy. I think she did a good job of explaining what she could and I wasn't expecting some kind of dissertation in a freaking YT video.

Ophelia isn't the end all be all of old school, but I greatly respect her knowledge. she knows her stuff and holds herself to a good standard. her styling is also incredible across the different jfashions she wears.

If you want to understand the aesthetic the best thing to do would be check through the archives for translations of brand creator/designer interviews. There's a fantastic interview in GLB with Kuniko Kato for example.
VK was also a huge catalyst in the development of the fashion. If you think about it, the lolita silho is structured in a way to feminize any wearer, whether male or female. I'd bet some of the design choices came not only from the OTT trend rising in VK, but also how some of the beloved artists were men.

>> No.9826766

>>9826584
The point was for people to send in coords and for her to give her opinion on whether it fit the old school 'vibe' and what they could do to change it.... Of course it was based on her perspective and thoughts - she even stated at the beginning that they were her thoughts and not law.

>> No.9826782

I personally liked Ophelia's video, despite not necessarily agreeing with it all. But that's life, everyone is different and has a different perspective. And instead of bullying people for having different opinions (not saying this is what happened here, but this happens all too much in today's world) we need to be able to have open discussions with people we disagree with, so we can see other perspectives in the world. More people should feel free to speak their minds... and that includes all of us, even people we may disagree with.

Fuck ya'll are a bunch of little kids. Different perspectives and opinions are good for learning and growing.

>I get the feeling some people just really want to hate on this girl for some reason
It's called jealousy. I know the "u jelly" argument is tired but that's what a lot of it boils down to when people have nothing better to say than "ugh I just don't get the hype" or "did you know she was an ita a few years ago!" (as if there are people who weren't ita at least at some point).
There were constructive crits and suggestions, I'm not denying that, but along with them there was a lot of just nastiness which was frankly uncalled for.

>>9826612
Reread my comment. It's clear that Ophelia is active on cgl, she even responded to criticisms right after the video was posted and before the comments got meaner. Many people disregard feedback on FB as "meaningless asspats" and turn to cgl for "honest opinions", and if you get shit on (which the video did, don't try to deny it) for making an effort, I can easily see how one would feel disheartened.
There were people who were constructive, yes, but that does not negate the people who were shitty for the sake of being shitty.

>> No.9827015

Here's a crazy thought: yes, Ophelia is a stickler for the "do it how they did it in the street snaps" rule and is obssessed with small details like not using pieces that were not yet a thing in those days and no, that is not a bad thing. Apart from just her having the right to have an opinion, I'd like to address the "is Ophelia trying to be some kind of oldschool guru" issue (which I don't think she is but yall are stupid).

I've lost count how many times I've seen anons write in CoF threads and all over the place "you need to learn the rules before you start breaking them". If nooblitas want to mimic Ophelia's strict approach to coording oldschool - fucking let them. If we end up with a bunch of similarly dressed newbies, at least they'll be dressed well. If they have enough of a brain and imagination, they will start moving away from that and trying new things sooner or later, but at least they'll have a solid base and some experience (at least some of them). I honestly fail to see how that is a bad thing.

I have 2 old school baby skirts that I hardly wear because they're just too small. A seamstress in my family offered to redo the waistbands at the cost of some of the gathering. As the btssb tags are on the waistbands, they'd need to be resewn in. At this point I don't really wear them and they were only about $30 each. Should I do it?

>> No.9827104

How much bigger? I would be concerned if it's a significant increase in the waist measurement as older pieces tend not to have as full of skirts in the first place.

I guess you also need to ask yourself if you honestly think you would wear them a lot after they're altered to fit. If you're considering it because you really love the pieces, it'd be a good idea. But if you're just considering it because they were cheap, you might regret that decision later on.

I think I'd most definitely wear them more often, though probably buy more tops first. I think that skirts in old school have such a wide variety of looks that can be created.
The only reason I mentioned the price was that if I'm not ever able to sell these in the future it wouldn't be as if it was a $200 skirt, though I have a feeling that someone might like old school skirts that fit a bit bigger.

I own a couple of MAM utks as well as otks and they're good quality. The ones I have do run pretty small, so if you have thicker legs they might feel tight, but that mostly goes for the otks.
I have a printed pair and they're very sturdy, nicely done print, tends to warp a bit horizontally even on small legs though, but ymmv. The lacetopped ones feature a really soft cotton lace, a bit less gathered and long than those of other brands maybe. Overall I'm very happy with them, go for it anon!

I wonder why so many now old-school lolitas used to be sugary sweet before completely switching their taste. Is it just a tendency to following trends?

>> No.9832942

>>9832922
My very first coords in lolita adhered to the very last traces of old school in 2007, around the time when AP came out with their pastel vomit then-OTT prints; these prints caught my eye and I wanted them desperately, my first DD was the Fruits Parlor OP in mint. Around 2010 I realized that it's not actually my thing, and I went back to the "plain" old school looks. I genuinely think AP's earlier prints are gorgeous today too, but they're not something I'd feel comfortable wearing myself.

It might be something similar with others; i.e. they saw sweet lolita in whatever variation that caught their eye, tried it, maybe even loved it, and then eventually grew out of it and turned to another style that spoke to them more. Or it could be a bandwagon-hopping thing, that's definitely a possibility.
I don't really mind either way, as long as people don't wear some basic black and white coord and call it old school because they want to be "cool" but have no concept of what old school actually is.

>> No.9832997

>>9832922

I don't really see the disconnect/switch in taste. Sweet old school is still sweet. Sugary sweet is just one very specific subset of a sub style.

>> No.9833000

It bothers me so much how many things I see listed as old school just because they are black and white. just like people saying something is gothic because it's all black.

>> No.9833286

>>9832922

The sweet brands were and still are major producers of old school. Angelic Pretty always makes one old school set for their New Years fukubkuro. Btssb is still making their Classical series, which includes a lot of old school hits. If you like either brand, I can see how it's an easy step to go from buying sweet print this month to buying an old school solid next month.

Besides, old school and sugary sweet fit together really well. There's a lot of sweet dresses where you can simply swap in a white old school blouse and it would still match the sugary sweet aesthetic.

No because taobao brands use cheap material that isn't accurate to the old school style. They don't want to shell out $$ for that luxurious fabric and crochet lace.

I feel like people in my comm would be able to make a more spectaculair and varied exhibition with their wardrobe than this. None of the pieces look like they are from before the 2000s, which makes me kind of sad as it’s supposed to be 30 years of Lolita.

As someone who studied museology, this makes my blood boil. You can run a decent small exhibition with that amount of money, this is lazy and honestly pathetic. Even if most of the money goes on room hire, she could have reached out to the wider community and borrowed dresses for display, even filmed little interviews from the dresses' owners which could be accessed by visitors by scanning QR codes. (She could have also had information cards.) She could have sourced a more complete GLB collection, it's literally easy to find them. She could have done a timeline illustrated with coords, maybe even recreated famous coords from the media, like one of Momoko's, one of Mana's, one of Nana Kitade's, etc... I hope she brought in at least three interesting speakers, otherwise this is a complete joke. Look at the shop bags just taped to the wall for christssake.

very interesting concept. I wish that, instead of taking this on as a personal project, that she'd collaborated with other lolitas and maybe even designers.

This is a great first step though! I hope this spurs a more professional and organized exhibit.

I wasn't there but judging from the tweets about the museum, it doesn't seem like there was a lot of new information. The organizer claims on her twitter that she's been into lolita since 2007 (lmao, I just checked it and now she's changed it to 2006), but every coord they've ever posted included items she bought in the past year (even her now deleted posts) so I doubt she has a lot of old knowledge to contribute.

The moitie nun dress, the blue meta dress and the red velour btssb dress are all from 1999 btw.

>>9867141
I honestly suspect she did it purely for relatively easy/lazy profit under the mask of lolita history. Besides the crowdfund she also charged an entrance fee after all. Though she hired a nail artist and will hold the exhibition in Osaka too, so maybe that's where a part of the money goes. (Fun fact: a month before starting her crowd fund and then setting her second goal to fund the museum in osaka, she visited VM in Osaka and tweeted how much she'd like to go there again soon.) It seems like the speakers were only her (the organizer) and a friend of her, pic related.
But your ideas are great anon, I'd love to contribute to such a thing.

This is really unfortunate looking. From the looks of the pictures there's no real organization, it just looks like a bunch of pieces thrown on dress forms or on the wall with no care for the display's 'story'.

I feel like to really display a history of lolita you'd need to have a piece or two from every couple years (aiming for pieces featured in GLB ads in particular but that would be horrifyingly hard) from each of the big brands (AP, baby, meta, maybe Moitie). Then you annotate the timeline with history tidbits like 'in 20XX Kato-sensei left Metamorphose" or "in XXXX Angelic Pretty hired Maki and Asuka". Displaying the GLBs from that year alongside the dresses could also be interesting. I'm having visions of a display featuring everything pre-2000, then another section for every five years after. Including the more goth/punk side is harder though.

That would be the work of years to buy yourself though, so you would need a number of people willing to loan dresses, which honestly isn't likely unless it's a big comm having a local event and they take their dresses home right after.

>> No.9867794

>>9867504
I think people would if it was a legit set up by someone reasonably well regarded and there was something clearly in place regarding getting dresses back, but given that the most prominent figures in the western community are surrounded by drama it probably wouldn't happen.
