1. Events are disappearing because showrunners like AM don't want to share space in the community with any other. Your con actively chokes all of the others around it. Your con wasn't even willing to share a weekend with another event that would've in know way damaged your con at large, but because of your organizers' jealously and greed they made threats against anyone in your camp who wanted to go. THAT is how events die, when they are stomped on by someone bigger for no reason other than existing. Yes, PoP was started as an alternative to your event...but did you ever really sit down and think about why? Spoiler alert, it's because your con had already caused so much damage to the local community, which brings me to my next point.
2. Communities are broken and toxic because people like John and Deneice are completely okay with showing up, driving a massive rift and snapping a community in two, and then acting like the people who were hurt were the ones at fault. That's called victim-blaming and it's a disgusting tactic that you and your con have capitalized on, which makes you abusers.
3. Jfashion is not on the decline you idiot. It is changing but it is not disappearing as long as there are people willing to fight what your con stands for and what it is trying to do. None of you are in it for the love of the community or you'd actually sit down, shut up, and listen to what the community is telling you. Stop pretending like the opposition is small or contained to a few people that can be written off, you have earned every single one of your enemies around the world and you will only gain more the longer you drag this out. I do know just about everyone who didn't manage to get a refund on my friendlist this year, including myself, is absolutely going for the very final time this year or skipping outright. Even the people I know who make less money say they're going to save up more to attend other cons around the state and region, even if it means they go to less cons per year or make less cosplays.

Whether BAM is making a real impact or not on guest cancellations, it's definitely making a larger impact on the Texas cosplay community with them choosing to go elsewhere, since a good chunk of AM's crowd is definitely local.

Have you ever been to a cosplay contest? Do you actually want to sit through more than 40 entrants?

I don't know how long they have on stage, I'd estimate maybe about 4 minutes max when you factor in being announced to walking out to performing to walking back stage. 4 mins X 40 entrants is 160 minutes of content... that's 2 hours and 40 minutes of just sitting through the contest. Cosplay contests are fun to watch, but sitting through almost 3 hours of programming sounds awful for judges and the audience alike. I don't blame AM for cutting the number of entrants down.

This honestly would’ve happened in 2019 without BAM, the industry’s known about Matsuri’s problems for years and it was just a matter of time before it fell apart. This is why Funimation and Sentai stay the hell away from it and why they haven’t had a lot of J-Fashion, gaming, or American anime content the last couple of years. Between AM, Space City Con, and HouPop, industry people are wary of Houston cons in general and it’s going to have a pretty bad ripple affect on all of them over the next 5-10 years. Enjoy Comicpalooza this year while you can because if you think the guests aren’t great this year wait until after the real shitstorm starts post-Matsuri.

AM staff seems to be barely familiar with anime in general and the vast majority of the people going only watch newer shows on pirate sites judging from posts on Twitter and the FB groups. The target audience for the Eva exhibit is people who either don’t go to cons anymore or have been around long enough to know better than to go to AM. John probably booked this only because he knew it’d make AM look more legitimate and he’s more than likely never watched Evangelion.

It’s fucking dumb, Eva is a really important part of Houston geek culture history because it put ADV Films on the map. All the people who worked there regularly guest at every other local con and skip Matsuri for the same reasons a lot of other people do yet Matsuri wound up with the exhibit. It’s a huge slap in the face to the community and people should be angrier about it.
