Most of my issue with steampunk is how... I don't think 'unrealistic' is the correct word here, because then I know people will moan at me for nitpicking realism in a fantasy setting, so 'ungrounded' is perhaps a better term.

There's a lot of good and cool steampunk or steampunk-esque media out there, with neat bending of period conventions and aesthetics and all of that, but the characters are so much more nuanced than the kind of steampunk cosplay you see so frequently.

Cosplayers always seem to go for "le quirky engineer or captain chick (with bonus extremely period-inappropriate attire)" or "le classy gentleman, but he has googles for... some reason", and they're covered in random cogs because how else will anyone tell it's steampunk??? There's no subtlety or story or reasonable practical or societal limitations to their characters.

And move away from the engineering and the airship pirates, for the love of god. Tell a different story! Use a different setting! There's a world outside of London!

Very much agreed. I love Gail Carriger’s Finishing School series because it focuses a lot on proper dress and customs of the era, as well as the cool technology side. And then you get the generic steampunk setting, with nothing special to distinguish it from a thousand other steampunk settings and chock full of historical inaccuracies regarding customs and dress.
