I couldn't decide what image to use, so I just put together pic related to give an idea of what the silhouette would be (Sword Art Online and .hack have good inspo material too). Casual/standard outfits would simply keep in with the silhouette, with maybe a few accessories here and there, while OTT outfits would go all out and include detailed headwear, fancy capes, feathered jackets, more belts/zippers, more elaborate jewelry, crazier color combinations, temporary tattoos, etc.
I spent more time than I'd like to admit thinking about this, to be honest.

I think the "chic" and folksy European flair shown in SSR is what sells it as a unique style. There are elements like the use of harlequin prints and border-stripes and selective antiquated "witchy" things like 18th century buckle mules that gives a whimsical or romantic impression which is distinct from general EGL.

I think another indicator for the style are elements with "outsider" status, borderline on theatrical. Like the pajamas are Romantic like a french Pierrot. Stripes historically were only worn by outcast classes and performers, same for pointed hats which have no precedent in mainstream fashion except for some 15th century henins.

I think the biggest differences from EGL would be;

There are two things to say about this style.

One is that it is intentionally over-designed because someone has gone over it in many iterations to perfect a style for a particular character. A lot of the time you covet the style because its a complex assortment mean to convey their personality.

The second point is that the reason Japanese fashion can get away with these things is their ability to re-imagine the individual parts from a perspective boldly removed from its context. If a western girl grabs a tartan print skirt she might say "well this looks Scottish or patriotic or X Y Z" and not be able to pull it off confidently, or mix it with something like those yellow converse boots.

I don't think you need fantasy elements, Serah has no unique item that is fantastical but whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The best advice is to narrow down elements of a style that suit the impression you want to give (but also doesn't clash with you true personality) and try to make a cohesive whole out of the chaos.

"otasa no hime" has dodgy origins, though. Someone posted rantings from 2chan incels complaining that girls in anime clubs are always ugly, dressed funny, and always surrounded by beta orbiters so the incels can't get near them anyway (but they're totes ugly and the incels don't want them anyway). Hence they're "princesses" of the anime club. As cute as the style was the threads on here always derail into heavy shitposting, so I'm not surprised it didn't survive.

Last I heard the style describe in otahime got folded into girly kei. I don't know why girly kei didn't take off, though. Some gulls even complain Eternita and Miel had too many girly kei spreads in it instead of being only lolita.

Hikki-kei on the other hand was one of the fashion trends born from a thread like this, except for some reason it got really popular for a year or two and started having entire threads dedicated to cute sleepwear, and a few people started tumblrs. And then just kind of died off, and now even the tumblrs are gone. Which is a bummer, there were girls highlighting where to get some super cute sleepwear and housewear. I guess that shit takes some effort to keep posting consistently, though.

I was legitimately interested because I love Edwardian fashion and I wish I had something to describe my style which leans towards being heavily inspired by it.

But borden kei seems to want to achieve being like a creepy doll. And the person who thought of the idea admitted that it's named after Lizzie Borden, the murderer.

What I was trying to aim for when I was talking about Edwardian kei was creating a fashion that had the same prints as classic lolita, but in the silhouette of an Edwardian dress.

I guess it's weird. I really like a lot of the prints for classic lolita dresses, but I don't like the silhouette of lolita.
