Woke up to find a rat had shit on the sleeping bag/blanket setup we had going on and told the staff. They walked in, picked it up, and said "that isn't rat poop you tracked that in from outside" and left. We argued with them some more at the front desk and they insisted that there are no rats at the hotel but also insisted that it wasn't something that involved them since it was a "building problem." We moved rooms since they basically told us it was move rooms or check out and saw rats running around the parking lot from our 3rd story window.

They're gonna get a fun call tomorrow.

How the fuck have they gotten this much worse? Staying at the Azure from now on and using the Rachetgate for when I feel like shitting on the floor.

NAYRT but you don't really know what the artists went through since you were an attendee. On Sunday, the winds were so bad that the entire tent was shaking (including the metal beams) and everything attached to the beams (the lights, the signage, etc). Artists were seriously discussing what to do if things fell from overhead and telling each other to duck and cover. I saw at least 3-4 displays that were knocked over due to the wind.

Even other than the shitty wind, the tent was fucking burning during the day since it's essentially a greenhouse and freezing as soon as the sun went down around 5 PM. If you're just browsing as an attendee, you probably wouldn't notice these things but when you have to sit in the tent for fucking 10 hours... it wasn't ideal.

Sales were down for everyone I've talked to as well (15+ artists in person as well as all the anons in the AA thread and the /cgl/ AA discord). Most people are reporting that they made around half of what they did last year since ALA doubled the number of artists. Artists have been passing around the feedback form online to tell the organizers that they're unhappy.

Literally the only people who are coming back are local artists. All the out of state artists I've talked to say they won't come back.

>> No.9769844

>>9769826
I can see AA being better for congoers than artists. Most of the artists I talked to said sales were slower this year in previous years (and ALA isn't an especially "spendy" con to begin with since it's way more of a hangout/party con) which is pretty typical when you expand the number of booths so suddenly with no significant increase in attendees to necessitate the move. On top of that, though, I heard some artists' displays fell over to the wind, most people were pretty worried about the constant creaking and moving of the tent in the high wind, no food policy, and the dramatic temperature/lighting change at the end of the day made it pretty uncomfortable for artists.

Obviously none of those are an issue if you're an attendee who can walk around and leave the tent if you want to, but it sounded like the physical experience for artists was overall pretty negative. The general LA artist community has also had to experience a fair amount of grief from AA conditions over the last couple of years (i.e garagecon AX) so I'm not surprised that the move was taken so poorly by them.

Artist here - I really hated the wind, it was really strong and pretty alarming on Sunday. I did stay the whole time so luckily there wasn't any issues but it was definitely pretty off-putting.

I am local-ish (I live 1.5hrs away, but still need a hotel), and it was my first time tabling. I walked away with a decent profit but I don't think I'd like to come back to table at AA again. The hours were really intensely long.. is that normal? Like, the AA was open from 10AM til 7PM. I'm used to like AX's being open from like 11-6 or something, so by the end of the first day I was already beat. Plus they started enforcing a no-food policy unless you bought a $14 food truck sandwich lol.

It wasn't a huge problem but at some points they enforced that artists couldn't even enter thru the side/back entrances and some people were unloading still and had to go through security (although, for me I just followed some exhibitors thru the loading dock area instead). That was pretty annoying and I felt bad for people who were severely inconvenienced by it.

I talked to some of my friends who said it was a very slow con. Being in the back rows, I definitely noticed a big difference in foot traffic because of how big the space was. It's a double edged sword -- I very much appreciated how large the aisles were, there was a ton of space behind tables and to walk/browse without feeling in the way, but I felt bad for artist who were located super remotely.

Overall I had a kinda-mixed bag of good experiences overall and I think the change was all right, I just personally don't see myself coming back because of how exhausting it was & I don't feel that the merch I had was appropriate for the audience (it was niche fandom stuff and not prints-based). I do give props for the actual AA staff for handling things well though, and appreciated the water and making the rounds to artists.

this was my first ala, i consider myself and my roommates lucky at the raddison. we didn’t have any problems with our room other than us having to go to the front desk to get towels since we had the do not disturb sign on. i also missed all of the cosplay meets i wanted to go to because of sleep, got about 90 ribbons and had a lot of fun with that. I got good final fantasy merch from the AA, made me wonder how many people actually played/ watched things they drew. not that i really care, still bought merch anyways kek. only bought from one or two booths from vendors.
i regret not taking more photos and not getting specific ribbons i wanted, also not exploring more, but it was still fun.

Lmao what's your definition of "amazing" though? We have this convo in the AA thread all the time. What's "amazing" for one person might be terrible for another person. Even in the AA thread alone there's a variety numbers re: ALA.

Some people make $500 and think a con is really good but that's nothing to people who make $3k. And $3k is nothing to people who make $10k.

Also artists who ended up on any of the far edges got absolutely fucked by lighting. And I say this as someone who was smack dab in the middle of the room and got a shitton of traffic and wasn't affected by the direct sunlight. Quit acting like other artists are complaining for no reason.

I don't really understand why they had to double the size of the AA in the first place? ALA isn't that big of a con. Basic economics means that there was just less money to go around. Honestly, it kind of felt like a cash grab from the con stuffing in as many artists/vendors as possible without regard to their profit margins.

I'd like to see AA back in with the dealers but that seems unrealistic because then ALA would need to cut down on the number of dealer booths as well.

An artist in the /cgl/ discord suggested giving the tent to the fashion show and putting AA in the fashion show room instead? Which seems like a pretty good solution! I'm not too worried about AA being in a different room than dealers (although generally sales are better if we tend to be in the same room) because back when we were at the LAX Marriott, we were separate from the dealers and the artists still did pretty well.

Re: food - I think vendors/artists should.... just be allowed to bring food in if that's something that could be negotiated with the venue? If not, at the very least have clear communication with the security that food truck food is allowed inside. I was told that we couldn't even bring the food truck food in and it was miserable.

If the bag checks are going to be the same next year, I would recommend having an "exhibitors" line for dealers and artists so we can actually get to our tables/booths and sell. A lot of us were stuck waiting in lines with general attendees which probably lost people some sales since they couldn't get to their tables on time. I'm sure the con wants us to open on time as well considering that we tend to be one of the main attractions.

For the record, I still pulled in several k this weekend. It was just less than last year so comparatively it was disappointing but it wasn't a bad con for me by any stretch. I just think that artist concerns this year are all valid regardless of how well or not well they did.

>> No.9770799

>>9770781
If AA is small, artists complain that they can't get in. If AA is large, artists complain about competition. Even at 2x capacity compared to last year, AA sold out in ~10 minutes. So clearly the demand from artists is there. I wonder how much of anyone's decreased profit this year is due to -tent location being new & weird -security hassle meaning people just stayed outside more -actual competition from other booths.

As a non artist I'd rather have more artists there so there's more shopping options. I spent more at AA this year than I ever do at ALA, because there was plenty of variety (even with all the FOTM stuff).

Re: food. Bad news - the convention center has ALWAYS had a "no outside food" rule. It was not well advertised although it is written on all the building doors, and plenty of people skated around it because no one was checking bags before. The food truck food was "ok" because the trucks were negotiated by the con center. Communication about it sucked all around.

>> No.9770819

>>9770799
The demand from artists is there because AA is becoming super saturated as of late. People who have been doing AA for years are still doing AA while new artists are also starting AA by the droves so AA's that sell tables via FCFS are selling out in record time.

But the thing is there also has to be a demand on the consumer side or it's not a very worthwhile venture for artists. Generally speaking, any con that increases AA size when the attendee demand doesn't proportionally increase means a bad time for artists. This is a proven rule for pretty much every con. It's happened at MegaCon, LACC, A-Kon, etc, etc. For example, it was well known that a decent number artists made 10k+ at MegaCon and then they decided to double the AA and everyone's sales absolutely tanked - even the ones pulling in 10k. It doesn't matter how good you are as an artist, if AA increases when the consumer demand stays the same, your margins will take a hit. It might not be a huge hit depending on your popularity and skill level but a hit nonetheless. (Again that goes back to degrees of what's "amazing" profit for someone.)

All the artists I've personally talked to IRL have seen an overall growth in their profit margins at other cons since last year's ALA. They brought new prints/merch and expanded their merch lines for variety. They SHOULD have made more at this year's ALA than last year's considering their track record at other cons. A lot of people are trying to paint the artists who are complaining as bad at art/uncreative but the people I've talked to have done everything to bring new content to this year's con and still did worse than expected despite bringing in several thousand dollars at other cons. That's really not on the artists.

>> No.9770825

>>9770799
Artists complain about not getting in because they're bummed about not getting in, not because they want more slots open to do so. The amount of people vying for a table has increased ten fold, and even the tiniest of conventions will sell out in a few minutes. ALA selling out in 10 minutes is absolutely nothing special when AB, SJ, and A-Kon have sold out in under a min. It's what happens when more and more people turn to AA for a living. However, the demand for tables is not the relevant factor. The demand for art by the customers is the relevant factor. If attendees increase, by all means, increase the alley. But every con is now being pummeled with artists desperate to get into every con that they can, and increasing the tables based on that only hurts the artists.

I feel like cons think that because they get a lot of apps, that their con is just an exceptionally desired con for artists and thus should increase their supply. But I'd say you'd be damn hard pressed to find a con that DOESNT have that demand; even shitty college cons fill up AA quickly. It's not a good determinator of how many tables you should have. Base your tables off your attendees demand, not your artists.

>> No.9770867

>>9770825
How do you determine that demand? Do you ask the attendees if they were satisfied with the AA or the artists? Cause I'm pretty sure regular attendees are going to be happier with a larger AA even if the artists want it smaller.

Attendance at the con has increased even if it's not the same ratio of attendee::artist as last year. Perhaps the ratio was skewed in the past where a small AA (and smaller # of dealers) at a 10,000 person con meant that artists/dealers were shooting fish in a barrel. I know this year I went from spending $0 to dropping nearly all my cash.

As a regular attendee my view is the AA was too large for that size of a con and especially for the traffic I saw going through. AA the size of AX for example is way too big even for the attendance it gets. When walking through the aisles feels like a hassle and a race against the clock before con ends or your next event starts that’s a good clue it’s time to downsize. At the very least put artists back in the damn con center and not outside in a “climate controlled” tent. The heat and climate inside honestly made me not even want to bother.

A lot of my friends who were normal attendees that I spoke to didn't even make it through the alley, or gave up halfway through, and a lot of others noted that it often felt empty. So no, I don't think the general consensus will always be to have "more".

ALA is approaching Fanime amounts of tables though, which is a 30,000-40,000 attendee con. The ratio before was fine as it was before; it was already doubled from 50 from two years prior, and most artists were already doing meh at this con anyhow. Comparatively to other cons of its size and attendance, the previous ALA AA could even be considered larger than average.

This year I only got a good look at a few tables and had to skim through the rest to have time for panels, gatherings, dealers, and ribbons, probably missing some merch or commissions I would have been genuinely interested in. I went every day and the weather felt either stuffy or cold each time. But if you want better opinions on the climate inside ask the ones who were in there all day.

I was more upset about like the rudeness of it if that makes sense. I've never been about the whole excluding someone from the group thing, like when you get the three hot magical girls together and leave out the DUFF Himora despite her being with them for a pic.

Granted I probably could/should have just asked.

Only real regret is not getting a hotel early enough and having to stay at the Motel 6. I didn’t realize some of those were franchises and holy shit is the Ontario one dirty and disgusting, and the walls were so thin we could hear someone popping popcorn. Plus one of you inconsiderate jackasses was smoking out 24/7 in the room next to us, my roommate with asthma had to leave the con early to survive.

This is my first time at the Ontario location, and I’m probably not coming back to this con until it moves somewhere that isn’t the devil’s armpit. Can’t stand the climate there.

The process can be largely automated. Even small companies can have automatic address importation linked up with the proper packages and zebra label printers so a larger one has access to even bettter stuff. Slap them in bubble mailers (SDCC does that) and all you do is verify contents, verify address, seal it. No need for tape because the bubble mailers will have glue on them.
