I wanted to say the stupid antic this time was going to be someone repelling down their balcony hotel room or destroying a ceiling for a suspended bondage shoot but looking at that image of the gazebo, I highly suspect it'll either be destroying the gazebo or a giant fist fight when the con staff regulate's usage again and someone insists on their mandatory gazebo shot that will instantly make them cosplay famous.

Can someone explain to me the appeal of the gazebo? I went to katsu back in 2014 and I didn't understand it then, especially when the building is full of completely gorgeous locations. Why does every one cream themselves over it?

That's literally the reason Sumiko got booted. She apparently didn't show up for a number of her Anime USA shoots, then refused to refund those clients. The admin of the Katsu photography group left a nasty review on her FB page about it.

To be fair, I heard the refund refusal part through a grapevine that started with the admin, so that was probably a huge exaggeration. The admin is VERY reactive and has a shit attitude.

On her personal, Sumiko says she did refund the admin for her AUSA shoot, but it was delayed because of depression. So I assume that goes for the other missed shoots too. Not that I mean to defend Sumiko because what she did was inconsiderate and irresponsible, but I realized who my source was and wanted to clarify.

There going to be a gull meet up this year? Last year was a fun bar crawl, and movie time, just a bit awkward.

He was my former company gunny. What made it worse is that I had seen him a month earlier when I had volunteered to help out at an event the local Marine detachment had held at the local range, so I knew he had gotten promoted from gunny.

I also actually was cosplaying as Mr. CIA when I took the picture I posted of the gazebo. There was some overweight 45 year old photog perving on some obviously underage girls, so we just started doing a "shoot" to fuck with him.

During Firecon two years ago I had arranged a shoot with Sumiko at 1:30 PM Saturday. This was when the fire alarm pretty much ended. I get that a fire alarm can ruin schedules, but she never got back to me at all. Thankfully, I was going to pay in cash so none of my money was lost. I was still disappointed though as she could've gone out of her way to arrange alternative times. Honestly I think she just doesn't know her limits when it comes to booking---sure, she books a lot, but not a lot of her photos come out as remarkably good. If anything, her work just feels like glorified hallshots that you have to pay money for. Hell, I've even gotten better hallshots than Sumiko's photos for free.
I think that's the problem with Katsu photogs--there's no balance. There are those who charge up the ass but won't prioritize their paying clientele over their cosfamous friends, and those who are pretty much shitty GWC. There are in betweens but they're more difficult to find.

Admin knew she was getting charged beforehand and then found out she shot another cosplayer with a higher follower count for free after the fact, then used the "cosfamous" person as a banner after. It's going to happen and it isn't the place of a client who approached a photographer for a paid service, knowing it was going to be paid, to bitch after the fact about it. Depends on what your looking for and weather. Everyone flocks to the atrium but other popular areas are the mirrored hallway on the lobby floor that connect the hotel to the con, the fountain on the bottom floor, the bridge over a creek to the right of that and a wooden area to the right of that. Unless it's snowing, directly outside will look like shit but waterside will give you some nice shots and a lot of people also like shots with the ferris wheel in the bg now that it's a thing. Last year because it was warm, a lot of people when to a fancy dock?? but I think that's a farther walk. Other place that I know exist and have never seen are a candy store good for more light hearted shoots and a sculpture of a giant man that's coming out of the ground which is great for Attack on Titan shots. There's also a pool that almost everyone forgets because it's winter.

The gazebo is overrated if we're being honest. It faces away from the light so if you don't have a competent photog, all your photos are going to be massively back lit. And in the evening you'll need your own lighting to combat the overhead light. I've definitely known people to still get good shots from it and I think the best use is whenever you use just a small portion of it but I've also seen more grossly lit photos from it than I care to recall. Also reminder for newcomers that as of last year, you and whoever you go to do photos with need a badge and a time slot to use it.

It's a nice area albeit usually with shit weather so ever having to leave the con area sucks. Food is almost entirely overpriced venues with a mcdonalds that you can really only get to by car. Con staff never breathe down your necks about badges unless its con space, the gazebo is now con space. Each year the con grows by roughly 2.5k each year so if you're there for photos, all the good areas will have high traffic. People drink heavily in the evening which can either be fun or destructive, I've known multiple people to leave the con in an ambulance.

I keep hearing they're going to be doing more badge checks to try cutting down on ghosting, from multiple people. How substantiated is that rumor? I can't see them doing it successfully, especially in the gazebo area, but the convention DOES pay for that gazebo area to be available, so it's an area they are able to enforce a badge check on in theory. Tell me about the other venues/cons in the area. Where do cosplayers usually congregate to do photo shoots? Like at Katsucon lots of people hang around the atrium area because of the space and good lighting. What about the Baltimore Convention Center or the Walter E Washington Convention Center? I've been to Baltimore Comic Con and Awesome Con and I didn't really notice any areas like that. Most of the cosplayers I saw were at the exhibit halls.

MGM isn't part of the con space, so no cosplayers there pretty much, since you need to drive to get there. A few had a hotel room there to do shoots last year (the Overwatch boudoir shoot), but that's about it.

Gaylord rooms are treated like gold, they even sell a atrium room for their charity auction that got sold for 3700+.
