No ALA thread? hmm.

Are you musically talented? Do you like LL or Idolmaster? Do you have performing arts experience?

If so pls post here. I want to get a group going for this, performing a song from LL or Idolmaster or any other japanese idol group you want to suggest.

I never go to stuff during this con and my panels were declined, so I've been thinking about doing this. Problem is I'm pretty sure I'd be just one of like two dozen singers. When there's that many singers, people tend to just zone out and stop paying attention during those acts.

If you're doing a singing act you better have a godlike voice. If you're doing an idol act all you have to do is be cute and marketable and charismatic. See: kpop culture

Anime Cons aren't frat parties, stop treating them like that. It's like all you spoiled children with your parent's money don't realize how much damage these dumbfucks cause to the hotel and how the con has to pay for it. That in turn makes it so the prices go up for the rooms/badges and I'm not about to be fronting the cost for these kids making mistakes.

The fact that people had to get their stomach pumped, the hotel had to repair tons of damage from dumbasses kicking holes in the wall/breaking tiles/mirrors, and having to clean vomit from everywhere should say a lot about how the con scene is today. It's a mid-sized con. I've been to the last 4 ALAs at the LAX Marriott and only their first year in 2016 at Ontario. The venue makes the event completely different. I loved the small hotel atmosphere when there at the LAX, because that's what makes ALA fun. Now that they moved to Ontario, it's just so boring and it now feels like a baby AX where I have to walk to all the different hotels just to meet up with folks.

I'm not even going this year, and decided to go to Anime Impulse this weekend and then straight to Wondercon.

Now, I hear that ALA is moving back to around this time next year since they renewed their contract to stay in shitty in Ontario. Now I wonder if Anime Impulse is going to have to move to later in the month just so they won't conflict.

Then just steer clear of the parties? I’ve been going to ALA for a while now and so long as you stick with the right people you won’t have to deal with drunken hoards be they friends or random folks. The main party hotel is the radisson so as long as you don’t stay in the lobby you’ll be good. That was because the flooding literally happened on Day 0 because some fuckwit tried to hang a hanger with a bunch of cosplay shit on it off of the sprinkler in their room and it set off the fire suppression system in the whole corridor. Almost all the people affected were staffers. You can’t notify people of a problem stemming from an accident BEFORE the accident occurs.

What good would a sign would have done them, realistically? Like, from where I’m sitting here thinking the logistics of something like this over, if they put a sign out front saying people had been moved to a different hotel due to flooding, they would still have to go inside and start the check-in process before the front desk could tell them whether or not the room they were assigned had been affected or not.

The only thing a sign would have done was save the few people who actually read it or noticed it to begin with the hassle of unloading their car.

NAYRT, but I staffed that year. From what I recall the hotel was having issues with the sprinkler system in the week leading up to the con and it was reacting to relatively minor triggers like hairspray and vibrations from people knocking their bags into walls, but the hanger incident was definitely Day 0. I imagine the hotel was already planning on turning people away/putting people in alternate accomodations by the time we got there, but the sprinklers going off on Thursday definitely compounded on an already existing problem.

Also I think it's funny some people who are dispensing unsolicited legal advice are advocating to sue a small con for a nebulously defined breach of contract; most of these calls to action can't even define which clause in question isn't being honored.

At best this is the personal crusade from a morally outraged pathologically disturbed person that is taking additional license to overreact and try to strongarm a con without even trying to find out more about the facilities in question.

Even if you tried and called the non-emergency line to report a party, they would see everyone in costumes call back in that it's some event and mark it as a prank call, and possibly all you back to not waste their time. At MOST they would contact staff security say they got a complaint and would walk up and down the halls without doing anything just to visually calm people do for a few minutes.

You'd literally be wasting your, cops, and everyone's time; and possibly YOU risk trouble by cops getting called for a false complaint.

People don't get that the hotel and con staff HAVE to say that if they want any kind of insurance backings for shit that goes too far. No insurance company would cover an unregulated party or such, it's just there so they can get money afterwards. People who don't party probably see it as something serious, when in actuality it's probably a copy and paste from their lawyers that wrote the thing last year.

If the hotel were to actually crack down on said party, they would basically lose all their customers for a sellout event. Not something they are going to do.

And yeah, iirc my friend usually takes the Amtrak (but it is pricey). The train is very easy to navigate, buses I feel are a bit trickier. But just look up the stops and you can even route via google maps (select the option for public transit). And yes, someone did correct me - it's the metrolink, not the regular metro.

I'm sure there's a lot of other SD people traveling up to ALA on Saturday or Friday night that might be able to offer a rideshare. Would still suggest trying either the ALA event page and post there, or finding an SD based cos/anime group (maybe even try UCSD based groups). Hope it goes well!

Usually ~75 bucks a day at the con, I only go fri/saturday unless I know the vendors are doing a worthwhile sale on sunday but usually its the same stuff I'll see online for cheaper, just seeing it in person helps me decide if I want to buy it off aliexpress/amiami.

>10 for ubet back and forth

Booze usually done at the hotel so I don't really count that

Speaking of AA stuff, do you guys think that people would pay for cheap alters/proxies of MTG/YGO/etc. cards at Artist's Alley? Me and some friends were talking about it in concept and thought that printing out sets of casual staples with anime characters and shit would be an easy seller if you managed to get the system down good enough.

The con parking lot should be fine. It costs $7 to park there per day. It's ontario so it's not exactly prime real estate and having to fight people for parking around the area. Worst case you park a little further and walk.
