I never go to stuff during this con and my panels were declined, so I've been thinking about doing this. Problem is I'm pretty sure I'd be just one of like two dozen singers. When there's that many singers, people tend to just zone out and stop paying attention during those acts.

No. ALA doesn't sell out now. They used to because of being in a hotel but now they're in a con center. They hit less then 10K attendance for 2017. You can still get badges at the door.

Honestly, I like to party and it's not hard to party responsibly. Literally, it's not either you party or you don't, you simply take responsibly and own up when things go awry. No killjoys and no people ruining everything for everyone else. Cut off your friends when they've had too much, no underage drinking, if they're too young, just keep away. Make good choices, offer to fix your mistakes, keep it quiet in the rooms.

It's a mid-sized con. I've been to the last 4 ALAs at the LAX Marriott and only their first year in 2016 at Ontario. The venue makes the event completely different. I loved the small hotel atmosphere when there at the LAX, because that's what makes ALA fun. Now that they moved to Ontario, it's just so boring and it now feels like a baby AX where I have to walk to all the different hotels just to meet up with folks.

I'm not even going this year, and decided to go to Anime Impulse this weekend and then straight to Wondercon.

Now, I hear that ALA is moving back to around this time next year since they renewed their contract to stay in shitty in Ontario. Now I wonder if Anime Impulse is going to have to move to later in the month just so they won't conflict.

They fuck over their fans and artists whenever possible (2 years ago their hotel flooded and they relocated people on day 0 when they arrived, no other info beforehand), there were tons of parties where people had to be taken to a hospital due to overdrinking and not being able to handle themselves, rampant drug use, and the fact that the con lets known rapists/sexual assaulters still come into the venue is beyond me. But hey, if you enjoy spending $70 on a badge for a con where they have a reputation solely for parties, go for it.

That was because the flooding literally happened on Day 0 because some fuckwit tried to hang a hanger with a bunch of cosplay shit on it off of the sprinkler in their room and it set off the fire suppression system in the whole corridor. From what I recall the hotel was having issues with the sprinkler system in the week leading up to the con and it was reacting to relatively minor triggers like hairspray and vibrations from people knocking their bags into walls, but the hanger incident was definitely Day 0. I imagine the hotel was already planning on turning people away/putting people in alternate accomodations by the time we got there, but the sprinklers going off on Thursday definitely compounded on an already existing problem.

At most, the hotel staff will come up to the room and tell them they got a noise complaint or to break it up. The parties usually disperse after that or migrate somewhere else. I've never heard of cops coming up to break up parties at ALA. Fanime and AX maybe because their hotels aren't always full of con attendees whereas the ratchet raddisson was pretty much all ALA and people throwing parties. Sometimes you get the luck of the draw and you know the people in the neighboring rooms and you're chill with them.

I find it funny that people try to make it seem that the hotel staff is cracking down on parties when the area is still a prime location for people attending music festivals and raves at NOS events center. What’s going on at a con room party is probably tame compared to what they get multiple times a year. I never get why people feel that there is a cosplay age limit or con limit. Seriously, the average con age is probably 23-28 or around there, no one cares you age. The reason there are so many cons now is probably because the average con age is older and has more money to spend. Just came back from my first Anime Impulse up the road in Pomona. You are right, it's disappointing. I went to the Asian American Expo side of the convention and I felt completely lost in there because everyone spoke Chinese or they spoke English with a heavy accent.

I wonder if they'll have to change the dates if they want to stay relevant now that ALA is getting their original dates back next year which could coincide with this hot mess.

Yep, Anime Impulse is a glorified 626 night market (except during the day), and it was Asian American Expo for way longer so over half the people who attend are Chinese families with children. The actual Anime Impulse part is a small Artist Alley and that's about it; the only reason anyone goes is to see Elycosplay.

Anime Impulse was horrible. Thanks to anyone who was there that made it more tolerable. I didn't even bother cosplaying and just to drive into the parking lot took me over an hour. All of that for nothing to do, no interesting panels or booth. Food trucks were alright.

And yeah, iirc my friend usually takes the Amtrak (but it is pricey). The train is very easy to navigate, buses I feel are a bit trickier. But just look up the stops and you can even route via google maps (select the option for public transit). And yes, someone did correct me - it's the metrolink, not the regular metro.

I'm sure there's a lot of other SD people traveling up to ALA on Saturday or Friday night that might be able to offer a rideshare. Would still suggest trying either the ALA event page and post there, or finding an SD based cos/anime group (maybe even try UCSD based groups). Hope it goes well!

It's pretty small in general, Saturday will probably be more crowded. It's spread out and it's medium sized. You'll find the more crowded areas to be probably, like in front of the convention center (by the food trucks) and the north courtyard area with some gatherings. Otherwise, people are always hanging out in the hotels drinking

The con parking lot should be fine. It costs $7 to park there per day. It's ontario so it's not exactly prime real estate and having to fight people for parking around the area. Worst case you park a little further and walk.
