I need advice... I’ve been cleaning up and downsizing my clothing. It was all going great until I got to my lolita stuff (which I never wear anymore but keep because it’s pretty and I hope to start again someday). Been following minimalist advice but it isn’t working for my lolita clothes at all, because if I followed that advice I’d need to get rid of all of it.
I do have quite a few items and they don’t get much wear at all so I’m looking for advice anyone has about paring down wardrobe.

Especially coming in to wardrobe posting time I’m keen to go through and photograph everything so I can sell it and put in the post at the same time.

I want to create something fairly similar to Angelic Pretty's overall style, with a bigger border print and simpler, smaller overall print. I'm confused by what my size settings should be.

Unfortunately my favourite items are the least worn - I’ve had to stop wearing lolita because my anxiety got really bad so I think when I do wear it, I try to wear less loved pieces so that I won’t face rejection of my favourites. This whole minimalism schtik is supposed to calm me down so I can do the things I like again. So Ive decided to just try to get rid of pieces that don’t fit great or are being held in place of something else (ie I’d really like a dress like this in a different colour, blah blah blah).

I personally work in vector because I do most of my artwork in Illustrator, but Raster is fine. default for spoonflower is 150 dpi but I recommend 200 dpi. Make sure your contrast is higher on your image as some color differences are lost in printing. I do a paper to-scale test print before getting fabrics because it's very easy to make all your image way too large during the design phase

I get anxious whenever I do anything at the moment, I find everything quite overwhelming so I’m hoping getting rid of most things from my life will make what I want to do easier. Clothing wise I basically live in one of two dresses at the moment because wearing other things usually freaks me out.
So what I ended up doing is I’m selling a few pieces, but things I’m on the fence about are just going in a box on top of my closet and I’ll decide later.
Even if I don’t wear lolita I still love the clothes!

>> No.9731665 [DELETED]

>> No.9731666

>>9731594
I'm none of these anons but I find Marie Kondo's method just doesn't work for things like lolita or expensive stuff in general. It works for people who hoard fast fashion crap they don't want and can dump it all in a charity bin the next day and feel no emotional attachment. But for something like lolita, where even if you don't want the clothes anymore, they were all still loved at some point and will take a while to sell and ship out to someone who will love them just as much. Unless you have a friend who wants them, or you can bring the dresses you don't want to a swap meet tomorrow, you won't be seeing the back of them for a while and they'll still be stressing you out. The best thing to do is to look after all your clothes that do bring you joy, and keep the rest out of sight and out of mind until you can sell them.

>>9731647
If you don't wear your favourite stuff right now, you can always try displaying and organising them nicely. You can also experiment with making different coordinates or floordinates too even if you don't feel comfortable wearing them right now. I promise you the state of anxiety you're in right now won't last forever.

One day you'll be able to wear your favourite stuff again. So don't feel forced to sell all your favourite dresses because some random ideology says to dump everything you don't use on a daily basis. If you want to downsize your wardrobe by getting rid of stuff that doesn't fit right or isn't the right colour, substyle etc. by all means go ahead, it'll probably be a weight off your shoulders. But just remember that this will pass. One day you'll be able to wear your favourite stuff again and there's no pressure to cull everything, just do what makes you feel the most comfortable.

>> No.9731690

>>9731392
Why are you minimizing if you are happy? I’ve generally been on the #minimalist train for years, but it’s because I move a lot and have severe AD/HD that gets exacerbated by clutter. If you want to keep something and you are happy with the resources (time, money, space) you spend on it, then keep it. Don’t let an internet trend tell you what you need.

This is exactly my problem. I think it does work for high-value items hoarded by people with a comfortable income, where they the loss of potential cash won't really affect them financially (plus Japan has resale shops so you can at least get a tiny bit back), but losing few hundred dollars is not a trivial amount of money for me. I managed to be merciless and find 25 lolita items I wanted to get rid of immediately (plus lots more that are uncomfortable/etc but I can't get rid of until I find a replacement), but sales are such a burden. Hours making listings, months bumping and reducing posts waiting for things to sell, and meanwhile they're taking up a ton of space in my room and just looking at them makes me stressed thinking about how much of a loss I'm making on each piece. Plus my friends/family nag me whenever they find out I'm selling stuff, especially if I don't make much back - saying I should have predicted that market saturation would fuck up resale value and I was stupid to put off closet cleaning for so long (true), or acting like I'm a shopping-addicted idiot who's constantly buy-selling new things without even wearing them (totally false, I bought a lot this year but wear it all regularly, most of my sales are things I bought years ago I can't even fit).

Maybe just sell the stuff you’re planning to replace, anon. I’m the original anon who started this discussion and I noticed through my cleaning that I have a lot of “almost” items. It’s almost perfect, it almost fits, it almost matches, etc. keeping these items around that I don’t like means that I never bother to get the things I really want because I end up getting some impulse purchase because I feel no urgency in getting the more needed items due to having so many “almost” pieces. ie I have a few long sleeved white blouses but I don’t like one because it has a stupid strip of lace running down the sleeve, and I don’t like the other because they used a weird ribbon on the front of it, and another is way too small. But I’m always like “I have so many white blouses, why would I need more?” If I sold these three, I could replace them with one I really liked.

Getting lots of ideas from this thread that are really helping.

>but losing few hundred dollars is not a trivial amount of money for me.
I feel the same. I'm not someone who sees my clothes as investment pieces to make back my money on but I don't like to go through the months of trouble to list things, try and sell them and ship them out only to take a big loss at the end. It feels easier to just hold on to things than lose money but then I have more stuff I don't want. I try my best not to buy pieces just because they're cheap, and I still have OTT dresses from when I first got into the fashion that I still want but I just know I'm not getting my money's worth of. I usually just display those pieces as home decor at this point since they're really pretty to look at and I don't just like to shove them in a closet to never touch.

>>9731825
I get what you mean with having so many 'almost' pieces that you can't justify buying pieces that you actually want. It depends, how often do you wear white blouses? Can you change some of the details you don't like on the blouses you already have? I'd say get rid of the one that doesn't fit, if you need at least one white blouse keep the one that is the most inoffensive or can be changed(can you seam rip the weird ribbon?) unless you really don't want it. Sell the one with the lace strip if you really don't like it/can't make it work. Then don't buy another white blouse until you see one that you really love. Have you got one in mind that you really like or will you be looking for one for a while?

Personally I have several black blouses because I wear them with almost everything. But I don't just buy them for the sake of it because they're cheap and they exist. I buy them when I see one that I like every detail of, I know they'll fit and go with my outfits even if they're more expensive because I know I'll really love them.

It depends on the item, the brand, and how recently it was released. Popular AP dresses are still easy to sell (even if you make a loss because an item's been re-released a bunch), but IW and Taobao especially have dropped value a lot because the market is flooded with them and they're so easy to buy new for cheap.

Also, are you in the US? It's way easier when you live in a country with a lot of lolitas within the range of quick, cheap domestic shipping. When the average buyer's paying $20 extra for international shipping it's way harder to sell, especially if it's a small item that was cheap to start with.

>got towels (??) and a book from an author I dislike instead because “oh Anon you’re so hard to buy presents for!!”
Usually on my birthday it doesn’t bother me so much because I’m used to it, but around Christmas everyone on my FB feed starts posting about having gotten brand as a Christmas gift and I get a bit salty. How can this 17-year-old’s computer-illiterate mother figure out how to buy directly from AP but my fiancé, who shops online all the time and can even read a bit of Japanese, can’t even be bothered to get me a cute phone case from Wunderwelt?

I should probably take this to the feels thread, I know.

Interesting, I live in the EU too and I've had a much harder time making sales than when I cleared out in 2016 and 2015. I even have some of the same basic items up now as I did a couple of years ago (different sizes/colours but same condition) - in early 2016 it took me maybe 2 weeks to find a buyer for 90% of my stuff, now it's been a month and I've only sold 25% even though everything's priced cheaper than before.

While we're talking about sales, hen do you think it's appropriate to wear something from your sales album? Is it fine if you take the post down before you wear it and edit the item details after, or is it automatically shady since you're using outdated proof photos? Would it be weird to post a coord shot to Insta then link it to a listing? I get more interaction on there than views on LM.

As long as you launder or list it as worn, and then check for any new damage and report that, I think it's okay. I usually use old coord photos or just make a flatlay instead of putting it all on, though.

Its not like I'm trying to communicate with him like that, I dont expect him to read my mind and magically know what to get me but that's how I'd "expect to be surprised", if you catch my drift?

Like i said earlier, I'm just hesitant to come forward about asking him outright to buy me brand, I obviously cant be mad if he hasn't caught on to me just showing him things. My style changed over the years and my size is different too, so I sold off a lot of the things I bought before 2015 or so. I kept my first piece for sentimental reasons but I don't fit it now, I was in my teens when I bought it. I try to buy stuff for the long-term and definitely don't buy-sell new releases, but I don't wear lolita that often when I'm not on holiday, so even though I usually don't get bored of stuff for a few years a lot of things have only been worn once or twice by the time I sell them. I've also sold quite a few things without ever wearing them because they didn't fit or the colour was off IRL. Once, with a magazine I couldn’t buy myself (no credit card) but he expected me to pay him back until I explicitly told him to make it my birthday gift. I don’t think he likes being told what to buy as a gift because then it’s no longer a surprise, but to be honest I’d rather get something I want and not be surprised than be surprised by gifts I never wanted and won’t use. The latter makes me feel guilty as well as disappointed because I feel like they wasted their money on me for no reason.
My mother once asked me to show her where I bought my clothes online and I walked her through CC and WW, showed her my wishlists on those sites, and hinted that I could give her my pw so she and my dad could look through it at their own pace if they wanted to. She said “oh, okay” like it didn’t really click and then bought me laundry detergent and towels because I’m so hard to buy presents for. A lot of stuff on my wishlists is only $10-25 so I don’t think it’s necessarily a money issue. Maybe everyone around me secretly dislikes lolita? I don’t even know anymore.

>>9732852
This is probably part of it, too. Both my fiancé and my dad have no problem dropping cash on electronics they’ll use twice and then forget about, but getting them to buy clothing, even for themselves, is like pulling teeth.

I hope I don’t sound too whiny. I really love my family, but I also just realised that I look forward more to my comm’s gift swap meet than to the gift exchange at Christmas with the senpai and that’s kind of sad.

My grandparents hate frivolous clothes but they gave me a good dehumidifier and high-threadcount bedding when I needed them. One time I asked my partner for lingerie just so I didn't have to spend $40 on a new bra (cheap shops don't stock my size). Sometimes it doesn't work because people think the gifts are too impersonal (computer components) or don't believe I'll use them (rice cooker, grandparents wanted to buy me a slow cooker instead even though I hate stew and eat rice several times a week), but it saves me money. If all else fails I usually ask for Lush bath stuff I'm too cheap to buy myself. lolita has definitely exploded in the past 5 years and the newer lolitas are by far attracted to the trends because that's what's most visible/available when they start the fashion.
taobao and AP, mostly sweet.
you can't gauge the general tastes of the community if you don't account for the inexperience of the new crowd and whatever changes have occurred.
Poll a bunch of noobs and 90% or more haven't read a GLB and can't name more than 4 brands.

I'm a chubbo and I own 2 VM mains. Plus-friendly MM is a bit harder to find, unfortunately. but you really can't beat the effortlessly elegant vibe of VM and MM. I mostly wear sweet because of my size but classic, old school, and trad lolita are my heart. Maybe one day I'll get some MM in my wardrobe.

In my comm it seems to be a combination of 1) not caring about anything that isn’t hyped on social media and 2) being really insanely oversensitive and not wanting to even think about something that might dent their ego. The ones who do know about VM and MM also know that they’re notorious for being even smaller than most other lolita brands, who in their minds are unreasonably small to begin with (they’re not, but that’s “common knowledge”). So the minute someone brings up MM or VM someone else will be like “Um I could never fit those??” and derails the topic into body talk and how they shouldn’t be made to feel bad because they’re perfect the way they are and those stupid brands don’t make clothes for Real Women but they’re boring and overrated anyway abloobloobloo
It doesn’t matter if the person they’re talking to fits those brands or not, is wearing a piece, or if they were only talking about accessories, they are the Brands Who Should Not Be Named because their very existence hurts feelings. And you know what annoys me the most? Newbies are picking up on this and repeating it, even if they’re slender enough that they’d have no problem fitting VM or MM. They genuinely believe that any westerner would first need a double mastectomy and several ribs removed before they could even dream of fitting. I only own one VM main piece and few others in my comm do (most people here are very print-focused) so this is hard to disprove, but I’m still going to try. I needed more classic A-line in my closet anyway.

As a person who owns a decently large amount of VM, I've made it my personal mission to dispel that myth every time someone brings it up. Their unshirred pieces are on par with the sizing from the rest of the main brands and a lot of their shirred/free-size pieces are surprisingly roomy. Maybe we created that image for lolita by making communities for coord sharing, so they feel it's part of being a lolita to do that. On the other hand, we don't have any communities/Facebook groups for sharing GLB/magazine articles or for trades and that's maybe why you get lolitas utterly confused about how to trade.

Saying that we don't have any communities for sharing GLB/magazine stuff or non-coord stuff is ridiculous.
On top of the old guard (LJ, CGL), fb groups like Rufflechat, aminos, etc. all exist, too.

I agree that there's a lot more emphasis on image/having an impressive wardrobe now more than when I first got into it, and I think that's part of the problem.

>>9733699
I agree that the other stuff is more annoying, but it's stupid and annoying for people to call themselves "die hard lolitas" (from my comm) when they know jack shit about anything older than 2015 or not from their favorite brand.
I'm not saying you have to know everything, but if you claim to be a super big fan of lolita, at least try to learn the basic history and brands.

>> No.9733993

>>9733992
No you didn't say anything about that, but I think the Facebook groups play a part in how new lolitas experience it and what they see as important. So if there isn't a Facebook group for it, it's not an important part of being a lolita. The most active groups are rufflechat (not the same as egl lj at all) and CoF. Why would they look up history stuff or indie brands? We learned about the background of lolita fashion on lj because people posted about that and because there were people sharing new and old content (scans and translations).

>> No.9733996

>>9733970

Old egl actually used to discuss GLB articles, and someone once posted Angelic Pretty's first appearance in Spoon magazine as it was unusual. This continued even after replica-chans caused egl to ban sharing images/scans from GLB, even that didn't stop the information sharing and discussion aspect.

It just never really made the leap across to normiebook, but then I'm not really surprised. The fucked up algorithm means even if you share something but time your post wrong it'll get buried under other more popular posts. So instead of putting effort into translating a whole GLB article that might not even get seen, it's easier to post a bunch of photos of brand spreads and let people upvote empty pretty pictures.

The lolitas who used to share new content weren't always the same ones. New girls should have popped up that were willing to share newer content, the same way lolitas are always looking for new stuff to share on youtube or on their blogs.

Normiebook just makes all of that difficult, it's a microblogging platform so writing a full translation or an explanation of emerging trends is difficult. Then the algorithm pushes all your hardwork into a corner because it doesn't sell them ad revenue, or it shows up as a cut-off article in someone else's feed that they skim over because it doesn't have photos. Face it, normiebook as a platform is pretty much fostering shallow emptiness all around. My Japanese is decent and my research skills even better, but nothing will help decipher some pixelated blob that's supposed to be two 14-stroke kanji. If you can't get a good read in one scan or photo, take multiple.

not that anon but idgi. are you saying "an either or question" is improper grammar? also kek at you not replying to anything they said because you know you're in the wrong.

It's contextual. Usually I say no, because it pisses me off. I'm usually trying to get somewhere, or me and my comm are doing something, and it's just bloody annoying. At a con, however, I'll most likely say yes, unless I'm eating.

Ntayrt but English is my third language and I even I know what "an either or" means and how much of a fallacy it is in this situation. Please don't compare literal retards to those who aren't native English speakers. They're likely a troll anyways, since nobody can be that stupid from the start.

>>9734175
At this point, I am sure you are not being serious. In the event you are not a troll, you should learn to understand quotation marks weren't needed in that context and study harder.

I don't have any pictures, but I am a fatty-chan who owns many AP socks, and it really depends on the pattern and the shape of your calf.

Vertical patterns that are just on the side of the socks, or patterns that are mostly focused on the ankle (like their boot patterned socks) work well for me, because my ankles are narrower. I tend to stay away from all-over prints like polkadots, because the pattern gets really stretched out in an unflattering way.

Try sending them an email about it? AFAIK, if enough people are interested in a restock, they tend to restock right away. Or else, look at Lolibrary and see how often they re-release that particular item. They're pretty regular.

>> No.9734642

>>9734568
Honestly, I'm not sure. I think they'll prefer you to email them in Japanese. You can type a section in English and include a Google translate of your request in Jap, then tag on a "I cannot speak Japanese, I used Google translate."

If the item is still in the web store, I'll recommend you ask them whether the item is in stock or not, since they ask that you do that on their webpage. Otherwise, just indicate your interest in purchasing the item if they re-release it. After that, add a line at the end that you are looking forward to continue supporting them in the future.

You can also add another line that you are from x country and like their products, but this is entirely optional. Flatter, but don't go overboard with the flattery.
