9713469 No.9713469 [Reply] [Original]

The year is almost coming to an end. What are some trends you would like to see in 2018? With the resurgence of MmM, will gothic lolita go back to it's traditional roots? Will MTO dresses become bigger and bigger? Will ball gowns be considered lolita fashion? Will Holy Lantern have another release?

I want to see gothic in general become more popular again. For a while the trend was OTT sweet full AP sets with almost decora accessories, right now it's OTT classic with 5 off white chiffon underskirts per coord. I want to see more stuff like the OP pic, maybe some heavier and more interesting makeup for a start?

I know I'm biased because it's what I like to wear, but with the GLB gone it's sad to see all the new magazines to be almost solely sweet classic, with maybe one or two pages of navy AATP that's meant to be 'gothic'. I wish someone would make magazine with an overall darker style. None of these new ones are filling the void the GLB left for me, but I feel as if I'm the only one not satisfied since OTT classic and 'soft lolita' are what's in right now.

Should it take more than a year though? Considering Western lolitas all get their info online.
I made soft lolita threads here. The people using the soft lolita tags are just Western and Chinese lolitas trying to get as many likes/reblogs as possible. Even after all the info I posted about it people still use it as a label for (toned-down) normal lolita.

This so much. I know I cringe every time I hear a newbie mention a corset, 99% of the time they think lolita=corset for god knows whatever reason. The ones that start out this way are generally also the ones that create speshul snowflakey "this is lolita because I say it is" type of coords. They also seem to gravitate towards underwear corsets with dodgy shiny material rather than decent stuff.

I wouldn't mind seeing burando corsets if that means we can at least redirect the the clueless itas to nicer ones. They've been making bustier tops that look pretty close for years anyway, some just need boning to qualify as corsets instead of bustiers.

Some brand has (plastic?) boning, though. AATP releases come to mind: Chocolate Addiction JSK is boned and so is my Vampire Requiem skirt. There's probably more; please correct me if I'm wrong about what the boning is made of.

>I'd like to see a declined popularity of lolita
Agreed. Maybe I'm just neck-deep in nostalgia but I do miss it when lolita was a little more "for us" in the depths of the internet and not on display for every normie to see on facebook. Not so much in a hipstery "I wore lolita before it was cool" way, newbies are crucial for the continuity and survival of the fashion, I'm just tired of seeing so many lolitas-at-heart playing pretend on social media and demanding entrance to our comms and meets without even wearing the fashion (or worse, supporting replicas as a cheap imitation of us), and then crying about bullying and elitism when they're explained the concept of a dress code.

>>9713634
>I want lifestyle lolita / rose-tinted living to become popular again
Likewise to this. I do think that newbies are important but those that claim that lolita is "only clothes lmao" and "only for 20 year olds lmfao gtfo if ur older than 25 hag" and "only for meets lol who would wear this regularly??", those who don't care about the fashion's history and where it came from and only care about the shiniest trendiest new thing that catches their eye for the likes and attention online can fuck right off.
Not to say that you have to wear it daily to be a lolita but if you treat it like a costume that you wear for attention you have no place in this subculture.

Yeah it's plastic boning. But items that need reinforcement to be more smooth and rigid so they won't scrunch or wrinkle, but aren't expected to provide shaping (skirts, smooth bodices, fashion corsets), are just fine for plastic boning. But anything that uses tension to create shape should have steel boning or synthetic whalebone.

>plastic boning

I think it's plastic, but AatP doesn't cap theirs properly so it starts worming its way out of their casing or something. Anyhow, there's quite a handful of dresses that are boned, even AP has done at least Etoile Twins bustier jsk with boning (can't confirm if their other bustier cuts are boned, though).

Usually the boning for these dresses are simply to help them lie flat, though (in the case of bustier cuts, it also helps them stay up since there's no shoulder straps). I don't know that I'd properly count them as corset-style dresses. Some of Atelier Pierrot's corset lacing jsks might be legit corset-style dresses, I don't own any so someone else may have to confirm that. I feel like previously a number of brands have borrowed the aesthetics of a corset, just not the function. Gonna be interesting to see if it's still important that a corset tightlaces, or maybe it's good enough if it looks like a frilly corset and you don't look like a tube in it.

The brand corsets (Abilletage) are still pretty much one-size only, so I guess even if corsets in jfash take off we're still stuck with girls who look like tubes. Or fatties who insist on stuffing themselves into a small one-size-fits-whoever corset and looking like a snowmen.

Yeah I saw that the print was fine and the blur filter, I was just curious if there was a reason behind it. It just seems so out of place. I know this one girl on FB that blurs any sort of upside-down cross or pentagon symbols because its against her religion and was wondering if it was something like that.

>> No.9713801

I'm not a big fan of the corsets over the dress style and kinda hope it doesn't become a thing. A friend of mine handmade me a waistcincher as a gift, and while its nicely made (solid construction, sturdy seams, symmetrical), it is pink, lime green, and has a picture of a zombie girl on the front. I wear AP sweet style. I don't have the heart to tell her she vastly misunderstands the fashion. I feel like if corsets become popular we are going to just see a flood of hottopic goth girls thinking they are lolitas.

What's the most important is how it will fit the parts of you that won't compress, such as your upper ribs and pelvic crest/hips.The ideal waist difference depends on the construction of the corset. For most corsets that have a more gentle curve, I would say 3-4 inches is a good difference if you plan to wear it with a 2-inch gap in the back (it's not customary to lace it shut, but if you want to then maybe 1-3 inches). If it's a curvier corset then you should talk to the seller or manufacturer about measurements. Most people can handle compression of up to 6 inches comfortably, but it really has to be a corset designed for that purpose, not a lolita corset.

It’s a waste of money to buy a brand corset. They all are badly made, and cost too much. Spend that 200 on a good corset from a corset maker. There are tons of people who will custom fit you a corset, you an ask for it match an outfit, embellish it, etc. Put the money in to get a good shape, or don’t bother.

Japanese corsets are mostly "fashion corsets". They may have boning but it's weak. They are designed to be worn over other clothing and the shape is more of a gentle curve. The 411 is probably the best shape for Lolita since it is short and almost a cincher, the big issue with corsets is that it is typically long on your hips, so it’s a good cut. But if you are chubby you may find it gives you a muffin top. I find that if it doesn’t go right to the underbust on me it gives a double boob look which is ugly, and that is why a custom one is always preferred you know? Imo I like the mesh idea, but the issue with their corsets is that it isn’t that curvy. Better constructed but if you have a good waist/hip difference it will be not enough.

If a corset has size listings like that, then it's not a proper corset. Excentrique is the closest brand that Ive found to doing proper corsets, especially as they do use steel boning in at least some of theirs. I'm not sure however how they stand up to any level of serious waist reduction. Plastic boning is always a no-no. It warps and cannot be used for waist reduction. It seems like many here don't understand corset sizings and what to look for. A corset's size is the measurement of the corset, the size waist that you are going down to. Unless you are a regular corset wearer, the best size is to go for one 2-4 inches smaller than your natural waist, e.g., someone with say a 27 inch waist should go for a 24 inch corset. If you are small busted, especially if you're very narrow on top, an underbust corset might be better to go for than an overbust, unless it's custom made for you. Gaping at the top where it's too big on the bust is not a nice look, even if it's taking inches off your waist.

Mercari and Fril are flea market apps with people behind it. It's even more complicated than auctions, because you have to read the seller's self-description and follor a strict protocol to be allowed to buy. And sellers are more flake-y, sometimes include shipping, sometimes not, sometimes accept holds etc. Just because there is a "Buy it" button doesn't mean it's any easier to buy from than auction sites.

I've got a CS411 and I like it, but I bought it in nude and only wear it under clothes (it stops waistbands digging in). I like the quality but agree that the curve isn't that extreme, although it's decent (quite good for lolita since extreme curves are a bit too fetishy IMO, although the hip is too long for a lot of lolita on me because I'm only 5'3"). Like you said, fit can be an issue on non-custom corsets - I have the smallest size they sell and it's still a bit large for my underbust/ribcage even though it fits on the waist. I bought an overbust from them around the same time and the fit is really bad for my body type, I'd never buy an off-the-rack overbust again unless it was from a seller in my own country that I could easily return to.

This is actually a complex thing, because it matters what the idea is when you wear it plus how squishy you are. For example, let’s say you are 26 inches at the waist. Assuming you buy a steel bonned corset and all that, you at least want to go 4 inches smaller for your corset. Even if the goal isn’t the close it, having an inch or 2 of a gap is no big deal. In fact some people say their corsets are “ made” to have a gap that big. For fashion purposes it isn’t a big deal if you close it at 4 and isn’t that hard if you wear it a lot even not meaning to waist train, but if you easily do, you will find it too loose. Even if you aren’t tight lacing if you are squishy enough you may by default squish down a few inches. If you already know you will be squishy, then you may want to go down 6, so for a 26 inch waist you are looking at 20-22 depending on how big you want that gap.

2 inches will be far too loose for you to go down buy, unless you are a stick you will quickly close and find it too loose. And desu at stick sizing you are at the edge of otr anyways since 18 is where many stop, so I would suggest custom anyways.

As an anon said above, wearing a corset under your clothes can make lolita *less* uncomfortable because it stops the layers digging into you. Steel boning doesn't have to be tightlaced, and the fact it's metal rather than plastic makes it less likely to warp and dig into you uncomfortably.

Are you referencing panel cut tutorials? The ones that show you that fabric cut gives a corset it's shape, not boning? If so, you're half right, and misguided. Panel cut will determine the finished shape, yes, and boning strength/quality will make sure that the corset remains in the desired shape. Weak boning will bend and dig and pinch. Strong boning will provide a sturdy barrier against you and the waist band of your bloomers, petticoat, and main piece, spreading out the pressure over the area of the corset.
Some people like tight-lacing, with practice it becomes comfortable, but that's the caveat. You have to be willing to get used to it. I hate it when people complain about uncomfortable women's clothing, gawking at high heels and corsets as if they're torture devices. No, you're just unpracticed, or you haven't done your research and ended up hating the cheap or ill-fiting corset you tried. No one uses whale boning now. The point isn’t to try to get you to tightlacinb just not buy crap. 4-6 inches smaller is the ideal starting point for a good corset shape regardless of intent.

Even on top of clothing you want to make sure you look good, and most of Lolita’s are going to buy a cheap 50$ corset and look ita. Corsets can easily be a trend but won’t be if you guys are being lazy about it, you see it more with cosplayers and their tube corset but whenever people bring up Lolita and corsets it ends up the same. Even if Japanese people wear bad corsets they at least are trying to make it aesthetically pleasing. But really, their brand pricing of 200 for a badly fit corset is not worth it (and likely will look bad on a non Asian body type too even if you go for abilletage). You can do better because we have the corset market here, Japanese people lack that skill and history. Take advantage of the fact we can get better stuff easier in this case because it is so European.

Another way is to double up, wear a corset under that is good and a nice aesthetic one on top of Lolita and fake it that way.

The difference for real corsets usually is that as a majority they will be functionality first. The fabric detailing and overall shape will be where a lot of the details lie. The 2 inch under your natural waist recommendation that I gave was more for less serious wearers of corsets who aren't regular wearers. Trying to go for much more than that amount of reduction if not used to it isn't exactly good for your body, especially if you don't have much to squish in. About 4 inches smaller on the size I agree is much better as a whole if you're being a bit more serious about things, and even if you're not necessary trying to close the corset.

I know lolita isn't a costume no matter what, but when you only wear it at a con or a meetup it pretty much starts to seem more like a costume than an actual fashion.

>> No.9716837

>>9716788
The rise of brands making OTT items is just making this fashion look like a costume imo. And because of this, the fashion is at risk of dying off completely in the west (since lolita isn't as popular in Japan anymore)
For example, I love I Do Declare's brand but most of the dresses remind me of period costumes or historical garb and not lolita fashion. Every time I see someone wearing one of her creations, I can't help but think it isn't lolita fashion and only furthers this idea that lolita is a costume.

This is where "be the change you want to see" comes in. It's great that we wear it daily for ourselves, but OTT has so much exposure online that newbies and even people outside of the scene think that it's what lolita is about, and they join us with the notion that all lolita is over the top with wigs and underskirts and prints as far as the eye can see, and is absolutely not daily wear at all. And this is something that we can change.
Taking and posting pics of daily coords might be a bit of a challenge, I say this from personal experience; after wearing it so often it feels kind of pointless to bother with pics that seem to get little to no feedback except for maybe some nitpicks by newbies who have no idea what they're talking about. But if we do our best to post anyway, there may be a shift in perception in the wider community, if only a minor one as a start.
TL;DR: Let's make daily lolita trendy again. I promise to do my best if you do too, gulls.

Can confirm this is how newbies in my comm view lolita. They openly scoff at the idea of wearing lolita or even just lolita brand pieces to more than meets and cons because "it's unrealistic", and one girl even came up to me to ~helpfully~ inform me that my oldschool coord wasn't lolita enough and that I should wear a wig next time. I've been wearing lolita since 2005.

Possibly because they don't understand the fashion and aesthetic beyond the basic definition given to them by the "rules". Not to say that the rules are unimportant but if you can't coord without relying on a specific "formula", you're probably not as good at the fashion as you think you are. >I wonder if it's a cycle where we'll be seeing unnatural hair colours hype up again in a few years or if it was more of a passing fad.
I imagine hair colors & wigs/natural hair will be a cycle in lolita. I doubt we’ll ever get the full 2010 OTT treatment again, since a lot of that came out of the popularity of gyaru (big hair, bigger eyes) and decora (gotta put another ring on it), but I think old school simple vs mid-2010s bold will be the big trend cycle in this fashion.

Along those lines, I think we will see a bigger swim back into old school styles, and modern takes on old school looks. We’re already seeing a resurgence in platforms, natural hair, solid colors, etc. in snaps, coord posts and magazines. I think this will definitely continue.

My big, out-on-a-limb prediction is a resurgence of punk, this time with a more modern and elegant vibe (think egl meets elements of tradgoth). Idk why, but based on snaps in Japan and a few photoshoots (like the gothic spread in Melt) I just get this vague feeling it’s coming back in a new way. Putumayo’s death may likely help, as punk can evolve beyond 2007 into a more mature look.

Imho this is the only one that looks good. The others are ugly, I can only imagine this pattern being used on furniture. And maybe a grandma.

I would like lifestyle lolita to rise from the ashes and more solid and simple pieces. Any colour, any cut, just basically something that work with easily if I'm feeling lazy.

I know this is unlikely but sometimes I wonder if there was ever going to be a shop that just sells lolita basics ie blouses, petticoats, bloomers.

Is that an Arthur Rackham illustration, or just inspired by him? I don't even like painting prints, but if a brand ever released a dress with a Goblins' Market print, I would buy it the second it dropped. Even if it was on gobelin, haha

same, I have quite a few things from them and despite liking it back in uh.. 2003? or whatever because it was still slightly precious and available to me, the fabric is that shitty cotton/poly shit from joann's and the lace is disgusting and crunchy and itchy.

Same here, I wish there was a shop with solid color cotton pieces. I'm trying to make some stuff myself, but I'm pretty sure these first couple dresses are just going to be house dresses since I'm not very skilled at sewing clothing. I want old school sensibilities in more modern cuts.

DESU it's probably better to just buy silicone elastic and sew that into the top of your OTKs, every fabric store will have it for cheap and it wont put your leg in a vice grip like those elastics seem to be doing.

This
You can buy basics and simple pieces secondhand, for very reasonable prices, to make up the bulk of a daily wardrobe. I just wish that brands would release wearable pieces more often instead of 400USD+ dresses with OTT detailing.

I don't know, I think the current trend is towards normiefication, especially for the older styles like gyaru and lolita where the girls in it are growing older. I can see sales of plush bags, but then they've always been a thing in lolita. I just don't really see it getting any bigger than the small-ish niche it's always been in.

>> No.9734717

The number of plush bags brands have put out late-ish this year is pretty high compared to in the past.

because theres only so many to buy. have you tried to look for long drawers on second hand that havent been damaged? they get bought up the the rest of the masses of old schoolers. we need a brand who recognizes how popular this throwback has become because they will surely make good money if they just release simple goods fitting to the era!

I don't really think they're any higher than normal. Baby has always pushed Usakumya, AP puts out a ton of specialty bags, and if the theme works out better with plush bags then they put out a plush bag (so for eg, Bear Collection and British Bear logically makes sense as plushes, so plush it is. Bat bag could have been a soft, fluffy plushie too, but it works better as leather, so leather it is instead). It's not like they're incredibly unpopular, it's more like they've always been a bit of a niche within a niche. Just like how they've always been, girls have always carried them, and girls will continue to. I just don't see it becoming a must-have fad anytime soon the way peignoirs and crowns did.

Maybe I'll believe it when Moitie does a plush Snoopy x Mana special collab.
