It's the attention *and* the money. If attention wasn't part of it, they'd probably do things like pimp out other girls to save themselves the hassle of putting on costumes and doing makeup for series they probably don't even like very much.
I also think calling them "sex workers" is a bit of a stretch, as they never truly have to interact with their viewers on a sexual level apart from the thirsty comments and DMs they receive and can curb/ignore without much loss on their end. I personally preferred the other comic series over Pokemon Adventures, but technically sexy Misty is canon.

Another example of her outfit getting censored in the American release. There were a couple really bad pictures that they censored with her stuffing people in her boobs... but left enough detail it was pretty easy to get the idea to look up what they changed for fragile Americans.

Oh god, in that series the Pokemon could actually 'talk'. Anyhow, what tipped me off as a kid to look up what the original looked like was this one scene with Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and I think Pikachu sitting around talking to each other. Anyhow, I think it's Squirtle or Bulbasaur, one of them is straight up talking about how they'd pretty much fuck her. I mean, it was really vulgar, there was no way to deny the Pokemon were saying sexual thoughts about her.

Its changing the hobby and the way its viewed. Ten years ago while cosplay was rather obscure, if someone did know what it meant, they assumed you were a massive nerd, which was correct. These days people associate cosplay with these girls and a lot of people cosplaying aren't people who are big enough fans of the series to make a costume, they just know they can get money out of it. It's frustrating for us as a lot of us are leftover from the old cosplay community, cosplaying because we liked a character or series rather than knowing we can get a quick buck from doing it and don't like to be assumed to be one of these girls when people find out we cosplay.

Its also changed what people expect of cosplayers at cons. I used to have people chat to me about a series even on the rare occasion I made something skimpy, now I'm less inclined to make skimpy costumes even if I really like the character and design, because guys take it as an invitation to hit on you and act sleazy, prior to the last couple of years I'd never had a stranger grab my ass at a con, now it happens almost every time I wear something remotely revealing.

Honestly, really nerdy guys and die-hard fans aren't the ones who act inappropriately toward people. It's usually frat boys, club kids, and ghetto fucks who are going to grab ass and act inappropriately. Unfortunately, those very people are showing up more and more to cons, and it started with video games before moving into the anime/manga territory. Video games were normalized, and now it's happening here.

And yeah, it's going to lead to people who'd grab the ass of a skimpily dressed girl at the bar or in a party who are going to start doing it at conventions. It also doesn't help that GQ and several men's publications started running articles a few years back focusing on conventions, cosplay, and the sexiness of their women which also invited people to take their nonsense to the con floor.

A hobby, by definition, does not require integrity. I ran the Philadelphia marathon last weekend and it was windy as hell. I ran behind other runners when winds were in front, then passed them when winds were at my back and they were tired from breaking the wind. That’s total lack of integrity. I don’t care. Dressing as characters and emulating them is the fun, recognition is a bonus.

A non-profit organization run by some decent people with the goal to spread the culture of manga, anime, cosplay, lolita, etc. to the general population would have an obligation to deal with the thots because they are not participating in any of those areas and they are actually making it more difficult to spread the culture due to being unsuitable to a big part of the population.

It would also be so easy to say that you aren't allowed to sell services or merchandize (photos) at the convention or in connection to the convention you are running without having the organizers' permission.

When I think about it some more I think you may actually be misunderstanding what making a profit means and how unimportant it can be.

Say you have expenses of 10k to run a certain event. The event can have an income of 10k, they break even with this amount. This means they have paid rent, materials, all the agreed upon wages for workers, unforseen expenses and whatnot. They will also be able to run the same event the next year without any problem. All this without making a single cent of profit.

You'd normally want to make some profit to put into a buffert for future development, large unforseen expenses, covering up for a bad year or two and so on. But making a large profit is in no way, shape or form necessary to run a successful event year after year. I've been in a board where we planned to lose money during the year because that's what we decided was most in line of the members' and organization's interests. And I'd say focusing on making money will just turn it into a worse event.

Usually when it's a private company, an individual or just the wrong kind of people in charge the focus turns from producing a good event into having as much money as possible left over after the event. That's what you want avoid by having a non-profit organization of some sort that answers to the members.
