I just don't like the aesthetic of soft Lolita. It looks like a toned down sugary sweet Lolita and that's not the aesthetic I was going for with "otome." However inaccurate that term may be, the quirky, quasi vintage style describes what I dress and what I aspire too than throwing on a full set from Leur Getter. That's all.

Is right, plus there’s a tendency for the Western comm to jump on Japanese terms and deem them an entirely new substyle. When I started there were guides that detailed gothic, classic, sweet etc. but then also claimed that shiro, kuro, ao/sax, pinku etc. were full substyles in their own right because some Japanese girls who appeared in street snaps would describe their style as “pinku lolita”, when really all they were saying is that they were wearing a lolita coord in all pink. Otome probably came from Japanese women describing their style as girly and some people then decided to categorise that as an entirely separate style with specific rules.

The same things get said every thread about the name origins. These discussions always devolve into people squabbling. No one ever changes anyone's idea of it in the end. It's better to check the archive if you are genuinely curious about learning more.

Misako also talks about soft lolita in this interview: https://matcha-jp.com/en/280

>I often think it is difficult to wear Lolita fashion because my other job is nursing. So I can't wear Lolita clothes when I work as a nurse, and I also don't have enough time to complete my ideal Lolita fashion collection. Although, know that there are a number of girls who want to enjoy Lolita fashion 365 days a year, so I suggested the girlie and romantic "Soft Lolita", which is a more casual Lolita fashion option. A good example of this can be seen in "LARME".

A lot of lolitas like Larme because it's very feminine, but they don't like the nymphet, sometimes sexy aspect of it. When Rosemarie Seoir attends lolita events they show coords like pic related. I guess that's what Misako means as soft lolita in Larme. It's more about the girly aesthetic and doesn't have to abide to the rules of lolita because it's not true lolita fashion, but it shouldn't be revealing or sexy either.

It would be easier to help you knowing what you have in your wardrobe but it shouldn't be too hard if you wear primarily old school.
If you have anything in black (black/black preferred to black/white), or muted tones, that's your best choice, otherwise try to pick something with as little lace and ruffles as you can. Floral prints are okay too.
Pick a cardigan or a bolero without too many embellishments (a small logo like Baby's embroidery is fine, but I'd avoid anything that says "Baby") - Wearing something on top of a JSK instead of a blouse underneath helps tone down the look a lot - And add a cute necklace with a small pendant to add some interest that may be lacking without a blouse's frilly collar.
OTKs that are long enough to not show under your dress are great, or if you have any doubts, go with tights instead.
If you have any plain heels that still look good with your coords now is the time to break them out, be sure to avoid anything with huge platforms or bows.
For hair accessories I'd pick a small hair clip, bows are okay as long as they're not too big and frilly but if you have a flower hair clip it might be better, or maybe something like pic related because looks more like jewelry for your hair than an actual ribbon that may be perceived as childish.
Good luck, anon, I hope this helped a bit!

>> No.9706646

I really like this trend, since nowadays I feel a little "left out" in the surge of OTT coords that I see every meeting. My question is, can we be soft while being gothic?

>> No.9706649

>>9706646
Of course you can. The way I see it, creating a toned down look is much easier than making it OTT; sure it depends on what you have in your wardrobe, if you've collected flashy, extravagant pieces with the intention of only wearing them at events you might have some problems, but otherwise I don't see why you'd have issues creating a more casual look with gothic.

I feel like most MMM dresses, particularly OPs, lend themselves to soft lolita very well, because they look nice and elegant even with minimal accessorising. They’re not like OTT AP or Baby OPs where you always need an interesting wig/ headpiece and legwear to balance them out.

I'm going to reiterate/add on to what >>9706642 said:

some of the cutest things about old school can also be the most jarring to normies. Keep peter pan collars on the smaller side. A nice cutsew would be great if you have one. Avoid bonnets, rectangular headdresses, or huge bows, go with something more subtle. Tights rather than kneesocks. Not as much of an issue in sweet, but big platforms always stand out to me, so maybe a plainer mary jane or something might be nice. Muted colours instead of something like pink or sax.

The "rules" of lolita are less hard and fast in Japan. You are more likely to petti-less coords labeled "lolita", as it's more about the aesthetic and feel of a coord than a checklist of items to wear. Soft lolita, otome-kei, casual lolita... these are all considered to be lolita in a way, even when they don't have the necessary silhouette, because they have the right aesthetic. Think of these casual styles like himekaji to hime-gyaru. They aren't the same, but they are a casual style with a similar feel.

>fashionable; in the US it also describes a dessert with ice cream (as in "apple pie à la mode") or, in some US regions, with cheese. In French, it mainly means "fashionable", "trendy", but is occasionally a culinary term usually meaning something cooked with carrots and onions (as in bœuf à la mode).
