Glad to see the discussion is now going through the community without talking about individuals but about the principle and that it may be taken up to/with cons to see if they can look at their rules. Improving the community slowly.

Not sure if this is the best place to ask but here goes: I'm looking to buy a steel-boned, plain corset to wear under clothes, costumes etc. and am wondering where to get one. Off the rack corsets tend to be lower quality and often don't fit properly, and I don't know any good commissioners. Most people I've found through google only have pictures on their page of heavily decorated corsets, which isn't what I'm looking for, and all the ruffles and lace can make it hard to see if the base is well-constructed or not. Does anyone itt have any recommendations?

Agreed. She now knows damned well that what she did was wrong and received plenty of explanation on the how and why. From here on it's up to her to decide what she does with this knowledge the future; show some dignity and live by the code, or ignore it and accept the consequences.
In the meantime this situation made it clear that while all of this is common knowledge to those who compete at higher levels or have been around for a while, there are still plenty of people who never heard of it. The more exposure the subject of sandbagging gets, the more people will learn about it and discus it. Hopefully in the end this will allow others to prevent similar situations in the future and wake up the organisers of cosplay competitions about the importance of fair play and proper sportsmanship.

Also to anyone looking for a change, I'd highly suggest sending an email to both DCC and TCC (as they organised the compo) on this subject. The more direct complaints they'll receive, the higher the odds will be of it being a subject during their evaluation of this edition of DCC. Just make sure to keep it formal and leave out any name calling or silly demands.

I was wondering what you all think of camera crews on conventions.
They have been giving nothing but drama both in the past and present. I can also imagine they most have made some people feel uncomfortabel, maybe even unsafe, in a place that is suposed to be their safe heaven. (Mostly thinking about Spuiten&Slikken and their pushy style of interviewing.) Don’t you think conventions should refuse camera crews in order to protect their visitors/fellow cosplay fanatics?

I was just wondering. I personally haven’t been at a convention in ages, but I was thinking about maybe attending one again soon. I just really don’t want to be at a convention and have a microphone pushed in my face for entertaining television.

>> No.9703513

I believe a lot of people in the Dutch community should grow a thicker skin and stop being so easily offended about everything. Items such as the ones from RTL Boulevard, Chantal and Spuiten en Slikken are made to entertain, not to inform. They aren’t trying to sell “the truth about cosplay”, instead they simply taking a few cheap shots at the expense of our quirky hobby. Just lighten up, learn not to take these items too serious and maybe even laugh at your own silliness every now and then. It’s exactly those who take things too serious who end up in these videos and for a damned good reason; they’re an easy prey. Just look at Mr Performance Art if you need an example of what I mean.

Also, keep in mind it’s not just commercial broadcasters who are present at conventions. Regional broadcasters are often present at conventions and they tend to make short informative items. Sure, they’ll often still compare it to carnival, but that’s to give their viewers who have never heard about cosplay something to compare it to. Newspapers also visit cons and release articles with photographs afterwards, and you also have plenty of vloggers who create anything ranging from pure cringe to pure awesomeness.

As for the question ‘should conventions ban (specific) camera crews’, I’d say that is up to their PR team to decide. Of course it would be a wise thing to do considering these items are a form of bad press and negatively affects a convention's reputation. But just remember, you aren’t forced to talk to anyone and you can always avoid them or walk away. Cameras (both video and photo) are everywhere at conventions, if you’re too afraid being caught on one in a unflattering pose you might as well stay at home with your curtains closed.

Personally, I think they should ban 'em or only give press cards to geek media and such, I hate it when they give free tickets to this so-called "mainstream" media thinking it'll be some kind of free advertisement, they make money out of 'cringe content' and it's disgusting in my opinion, thankfully cons such as Abunai are pretty good at handeling this stuff, even when 3FM was invited, they insisted in having a positive article and I still think it's one of the better articles portraying the community.

But is it the responsibility of a convention to protect their visitors from these so-called bullies? That's the question that was asked by >>9703391, not whether bullying is right or wrong.

>On top of that it points unaware and uninformed people to cosplay in a bad way, making them form a wrong opinion about cosplay as a hobby.
So? People form poorly based and clouded opinions every day. If someone sees a bad item about cosplay and thinks 'hey, this cosplay thing is silly!' then that's fine. Odds are cosplay was meant not for them anyway. Not everyone has to like cosplay, let alone understand the full reasoning behind it. You can't expect anyone who isn't into something to read into the subject and have them justify why they don't like it. That's just unrealistic and somewhat entitled thinking.

There is a LOOOOOOT of vendette whether it's legit or just drama stirring.

During the XM event she made depressing posts, people who asked her what's wrong got told, by her, that the organization was fucking rude to her and they lied to her ect. People got mad bc why would you mistreat the guests but because of that she got in trouble and then made a post about how people are just minding her business in search for drama which basically means she talks shit about the people that got mad for her sake.
So her reputation is pretty much shit now outside those desperate middle aged men that follow her.

Her insta account is also not a business account so she can't follow algorithms and she clearly doesn't know that ig is owned by fb meaning the ad revenue works the same way so if she keeps buying followers through shitty mobile apps they'll just be deleted in 2 to 4 days looool

And just... Her cosplays and makeup are just. so. so. so. bad.

The treats her sponsors like shit, she talks shit about everyone she hangs out with >except ofc her new buddy photographers because she needs them because she and her bf are shitty photographers obviously.
And she's just getting fatter without even lifting a finger to actually work hard to create quality content.

I hate patreon cosplayers that don't provide things like tutorials or info on characters, tips for cosplaying or things like that. Selfie reward patreons are just fucking retarded. Kim is dragging the already shitty cosplayers with her

her maid cafe is going the same way she is
that chinese with that soccerball head started buying likes, maymay idollu i dont speak dutch and only speak thai started patreon and her other friends started horrendously shopping after hanging out with her. then the friendship breaks and she leeches of someone else.

When will you quit kimu? When will you move to another country that understands you? What's holding you back?

Just to add to this. Her attitude to me has always been okay. Although, I do not know how she talked about me behind my back of course.

It is too bad she focusses on flavor of the month cosplays and only pays for cheap commissions as it is obviously visible.

I think she could be a cute cosplayer if she tried a bit harder to put some love into it, but this is her decision. She will probably never do that as she has a very negative experience with the community now.
She looks a bit fatter in the Nero dress, but I don't know if she actually got that much fatter. Little note, when you grow up, you can become a bit fatter, especially without exercising often. It could be that.

She hasnt been working for NNN for a while now. If you have problems with one of the people there, okay. However, I do have to admit that I love their food at conventions. I am happy to see that a maid cafe is allowed to serve more than cup noodles or watermelon as they have a chef. Their café in the Hague was also very nice.

I hope that Kimu might change her mind about cosplay and one day can truly enjoy cosplay and conventions once again. Until then, I just hope she doesn't damage her reputation enough to leak outside of Japanese culture communities.

I agree

I think that rather on focusing on cosplays she should learn to come to terms with herself and work on her self confidence/attitude

If she's in a mentally better state she won't need to lie, photoshop or seek so much attention. She needs to be at least on the level where it doesn't affect the people around her.

I personally enjoy watching Team paraluna, Willow creative and Sednobis create and perform. Team paraluna are also really nice irl and they also contribute a lot to the community by giving workshops and helping out cosplay shops. Willow Creative is the only furry I do feel comfortable with. I think that is because of knowing who is inside and because her Lucario, for example, was amazing! Mad respect for her crafting abilities. Sednobis is so active behind the scenes as well as being a cosplayer! That's something that really shows how much someone cares about a community like this as they contribute to make sure it can keep on existing. She is also not the skinniest or prettiest, but still accomplished so much and still looking good in her outfits. That is also very inspiring.

I agree (see >>9703513), it was definitely blown out of proportions. However, that doesn't change the fact there was still a vocally present group of people upset by this item. As a convention directly involved you still want to react to these people in a timely manner, even if it is just to let them know they are being heard. Don't do this and they'll just keep complaining, get frustrated and slowly start to dislike your convention or claim you're being unprofessional for ignoring problems.

For example, earlier this year a group of people were vocally upset about there being a 18+ shibari lecture at Animecon. Some claimed it strengthened the idea that cosplay is something sexual, others were afraid it would attract perverts and then you had those telling everyone to think of the children. Was this too blown out of proportions? Fuck yes it was! But still, Animecon quickly released a statement the next day and things calmed down soon after.

>> No.9707688

I think Animecon is a very rare example in addressing issues like this. Most events just hide away or pretend nothing went wrong at all (hello tomo). It's a strategy that works most of the time:let it blow over.

>> No.9707701

>>9707688
While it might work, I personally don't feel it is a professional approach to ignore these matters. People will always remember what happened and the next time something similar occurs, even at another con, it will be brought up again. When that happens you'd rather have them think back positively at how your con took them seriously than how you ignored the issue. Pull that crap often enough and people will start to think less of your con (Abunai) or flat out start hating it (Tomo).

Speaking of Abunai, they did tried to keep everyone informed during the 2017 Annual Hotel Room Hunger Games. Whenever they finally heard something from NH it was immediately passed on to their visitors. It's just a shame how horrible things went as NH thought a toaster would be able to handle the traffic of +500 weebs simultaneously trying to book a room. Lets hope next year will be different, as in, just stick to that excel sheet which just works.

I think the difference between Enako and the patreon leeching cosplayers is their professionalism(?) Enako in example provides concerts during conventions while Kimu just... takes selfies and low tier photoshoots. I don't know, I personally wouldn't compare those two together.

>> No.9707777

The concerts are good, but I'm pretty sure it's mostly just event modeling (just like at the Comiket this year). What I mean is, that you can basically become a famous cosplayer by not making your costumes, if you have the looks and skills of a professional model, or I guess idol. And that is exactly what Enako is, and why she cashes in. Kimu on the otherhand can indeed not be compared, because she has neither looks nor skills to make it on a professional level. Idk if it was ever her goal to be a pro, but if it is, she needs to work on a lot of things.

I don’t think comaring DCC/RTL Boulevard with the Animecon 18+ drama is a comparable comparison.

Animecon was completely ingrowed without outsiders (which made the whole commotion even more ridiculous), while DCC was a promise from outside that ended up in getting called mafkezen for litterly millions of people.

People can make CABNL jokes as much as they want. When even celebrities, who are supposed to handle tv attention, have struggles with it, you can't expect "everyday" people to handle it on the first try. Believe it or not, this takes practice.

Even the "they'll forget" argument is only true for a part. Some people still refer to the 'Ik heb het nog nooit gedaan' episode when I tell them I cosplay. Hack, a friend of mine got 'plausibel' comments from some guys while going all dressed in white (including facepaint and long wig) to the party. That 5 years after the episode.
I don't mind the comparison, I even laught at the plausible comment my friend got. But it shows people don't forget it as much as we like to.

But an important point I haven't seen here discussed: the interviewed cosplayers where ask through DCC's PR mail. It wasn't a powned style 'shove the camera in someones face and you should have known better' case.
As you can read >>9707607 DCC expected a positive fragment. And that showed in the PR mails. Which changed the expectation of the fragment to a more positive one, and that crashed like an airplane.

>I don’t think comaring DCC/RTL Boulevard with the Animecon 18+ drama is a comparable comparison.
Both are examples of a convention handling bad PR. Animecon has always taken an active stand with these matters, not all that surprising as they closely monitor the community. Sure, DCC had it worse considering their visitors were called 'mafketels' on live television, but that's all the more reason for them to take a pro-active stand. I get they wanted to wait from a response from RTL before making a statement, but you're not going to tell me it took RTL 10 days to get back at DCC. But at least they made a statement, even if was a predictive basic one. It's still more than some conventions have done...

>People can make CABNL jokes as much as they want.
But I'm not joking. I have a strong dislike for awareness groups as none of them have a plan in place to actually tackle their cause. Bullying is bad, we get it. Now is the time to actually jump into action and do something to put a halt to it. And yes, the fact that they are accepting donations on a personal bank account, without being registered as a charity, without releasing ANY details on what donations are/will be spend on, makes me extremely cautious about these people. If I want to give my money away without knowing where it goes I might as well give it to a homeless drug addict.

From what I gathered:

A member asked how people felt about ghost members, and if there should be a cleanup. Seems like she just wanted some opinions.

Then there were some idiots who didn't know the definition of ghost members.

that settled down and then people just had a fairly normal conversation that just kept going on and on.

Some mods checked in, one doesn't want to get rid of ghost members, no idea why because they are useless to the com.

Two other ones think it's a good idea, one even was part of the discussion.

And then the last mod got all aggressive towards the OP. (Is aggressive the right word?)
Acting as if OP was attacking the mods by simply asking a question.

And now everybody's gone to bed.

If it's such a hassle for them to mod the group (which includes removing ghost members) then why don't they step down and let actually active girls take their place?

Because there are people in the group, who don’t wear Lolita and are not even planning to become one. They are just there to lurk.
And some of us want them gone, because they are the reason most girls stop posting coords and such in the group.
The fact that RTL members and such are in it doesn’t help as well. And even though the mods apparently screen for it, I still got contacted by someone a few weeks ago. Nayrt but I don't think any of us have a problem with people who are genuinely interested in the fashion and want to start wearing it. It's the people who don't intend to ever wear it and just want to stare who are making us uncomfortable. If you just want to see people wear lolita you can follow tumblrs and instas where lolitas post their coords for everyone to see. But the FB group is a closed group meant for local people who are involved in the hobby, not random onlookers. Like someone mentioned there are even people from RTL in the group and well, we don't appreciate being gawked at and called "mafkezen" any more than cosplayers do. I don't think that's elitist.

Well it’s quite logical when only 50 of the 500+ people go to a meet or post every now and then. There are too many members, even when you look at the people who might genuine like the fashion.
Lolita’s probably also dislike outsiders more than cosplayers, you should keep that in mind as well. You can already see that in how they react to the people who try to take photos of them, and the fact most of them will still say no even when asked. (Because they simply don’t want to be on a strangers phone and have their photo being shared to the other normies.)

>> No.9708448

>>9708420

I think it's important to stress the difference between cosplayers and lolitas here. For cosplayers, there's almost always a performative element: they generally want to portray a certain character, have their photo taken, participate in contests, make a fanpage, even start a Patreon and sell prints of themselves in cosplay. It doesn't really matter if the people liking their page or buying their prints are cosplayers themselves. But lolita is just clothing. Weird clothing maybe, but just clothes in the end. We dress for ourselves and other lolitas, not to portray a character and make other people happy. Lolita fan pages are an extreme rarity and I doubt there will ever be a successful lolita Patreon. So while it makes sense to have nonparticipating "admirers" in a cosplay community, it's a bit weird for a lolita community. Add the fact that we often have to deal with people who treat it like a fetish without our consent as well as people who just want to see our pictures for a cheap laugh, and you get a community that's not very welcoming to random onlookers.

Imagine if, say, knitting as a hobby was subject to a lot of misunderstandings, was viewed as a fetish to many and as something ridiculous to be mocked by many others. Do you think a local knitting group would be happy to have hundreds of members who just want to stare at them and aren't actually interested in learning to knit? Probably not.

I agree, lolitas only like being praised by others wearing the fashion or maybe people that wear other kinds of jfashion. If you cosplay a game character you want to be praised by people who like the game/show and character as well as other cosplayers. Cosplay also even has a positive tv show about it on TLC and is much more well known to the public. Because lolita is a smaller community a few rotten apples are more noticeable and thus we are protective of both our image and who comes into contact with us. In another thread the discussed how creeps have very often stolen pictures to put fetish comments on it and we also had a couple who tried to go to meet ups a couple of years ago. I also wouldn't join a tiny cosplay group of a specific show that I have not seen nor want to see just too lurk.

The biggest problem Viencon has (besides the stupid name) Is that they made the choice to focus on Cosplayers. The brokest, cheapest, most drama prone part of the community. Till now they have not presented one good reason for a non-cosplayer to go.
Its an event for cosplayers that that is normal right, wel not exactly cosplayers also have non cosplaying friends, if they're friends don't go niether will they.
Secon the price is quite steep and paying per cabin is not very dutch. because either one person has to pay the cabin and spend the rest of the year begging his / her friends to pay it back. Also canceling is not possible so mosr people will want to be 100% shure they can go before booking. And als that its in the middle of fucking no where whit no pulic transportation, people bitch about abunai and they have a bus stop right in front.

So Viencon thanked people for sharing the messages, but now I am very curious if the sharing really worked for them to reaching their goal.

>>9712146
Psh I doubt it. Even if they woud get the amount of reservations for their first goal, they'll never get the needed 1250. So I've already given up on them.

of course not, I think people know better than to trust a con organisation that didn't fail once but is about to fail twice.

They already wrote that they're not going to try again if this year fails again. On a side note, imagine how hard Willy and buttcrack are laughing right now seeing Viencons second attempt fail.

I can hear them laughing over here, so that must be rather hard. But I have the feeling that the Tomo bubble will also burst at a certain time. In the meantime, all the bigger conventions should be at their events with promotional booths inviting Tomo's audience to their better-organized events.

Was only staff invited? I only know about the pool parties (as in 'this is how it all began with the VienCon joke').

No, it was just with a group of close friends at that point. The Viencon joke started there indeed.

As I recall, the organizer originally made a post in a Dutch cosplay group to ask if there would be interest in such an event and it was always going to be called Viencon. I also remember from that first post that De Bonte Wever in Assen was the first suggested con location. The post was removed by the organizer himself after gathering info. More people should remember this because it had quite an amount of reactions. The poolparty followed after that, but it was always going to be called Viencon. That is also why the poolparty was dubbed previencon. I never understood why they would lie and change the story about that. The only reason I can think of is because chatter on 4chan started, where people thought it seemed arrogant and dumb to call a con after your own name.

Well you know, with promotion you want to show a pretty picture to get people go to your event.

It is a nicer idea that friends started calling it that than himself I suppose.

Hotel is not sold out (saw a random post somewhere on FB), they don't promote the convention much (just like last year), I get the idea that there will not many activities at the convention thanks to the little promotion. Do I need to continue?
