For movies I highly recommend My Fair Lady (I mentioned it last thread). Her dresses in that movie are just to die for. I also really love the BBC miniseries Lost in Austen. It's kind of Mary Sue in concept but still fun. I also really love the book "The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady", which was also made into a TV show. I prefer the book though, since it reproduces all of her diary down to the illustrations and her impeccable handwriting.

It's something I've become disconnected from in the last few years (really trying to get back to it), but it's taking enjoyment in life. It's taking time to do really fun and decadent (or faux-decadent) things. When I was starting in the fashion I used to make a point of having nice tea one morning a week, teapot, sugar cubes, the works. No tv, no distractions, just relaxation and reflection, and maybe breakfast. I'm not even sure that a lot of stuff is specific to Lolita, but anything that makes you slow down and find beauty and value in simple or odd things is Lolita. It isn't about "othering" or looking down on normal things or people, but about the magic in the unusual.

Madame Bovary (book) is essential. I've never seen it brought up in this context but it's a fantastic book of the dangerous pursuit of hedonism and one I read twice through my early frilly days.

As far as lifestyler icons go, I can't think of any. Fanny Rosie is great for everyday lifestyle outfit inspo but it'd be nice if someone was into the culture aspect of being a lifestyle lolita. Until I find one, I'm just gonna be scrolling through pinterest, saving cute stuff.

I really love Agatha Christie and discovered lolita through a "Jane Marple" google search that went wrong. So I recommend her books and also the TV series. Both Ms. Marple and Poirot series are set in a charming era of fashion; you'll come for the costumes and stay for the mistery.

Does anyone have any ideas for how to store a large teacup & saucer collection?

I collect Royal Albert, mostly antique but some modern, and my collection is about 30+ sets currently. The problem is that I really want to be able to display the cups and saucers together, so something like pic related wouldn't work. I used to use something like it, and then just keep all the saucers stacked nearby, but then it was a huge pain to try to find the saucers when I wanted to use them, and as a result I ended up almost never actually using my beloved cups.

The groove on the shelf helps make sure the saucers don't slip and the rod in the back means they're not resting on the wall, and of course with the hooks it means your cup and saucer are displayed together! Adding my own movie/book suggestion, I always think lifestyle lolitas would enjoy "The Slipper and the Rose". It's a retelling of cinderella but it fleshes out some of the characters more and has music by the Shermann bros. of Mary Poppins fame.

I noticed most of you are classic and are interested in a classic, ladylike lifestyle, but it would be nice to see more sugary sweet, "kawaii" lifestyle stuff here!! (Like decoden, magical girl and Sanrio/san-x aesthetics, etc.)

I love the aesthetic of tiny houses, but I don't think I could be comfortable in one long term. My dream is to own a small house; I currently rent a duplex apartment that's about 850 soft and I don't really use my second bedroom or the dining room often; I know I could be happier with less space.

There's small craftsman cottages and shotgun houses in my town. I'd love to live in one of them. Some shotgun houses are even on the same tax ID so I may be able to live in one and rent the others. Only thing is most of the shotgun houses are very rundown (not like pic) and I don't yet have the money to purchase property and renovate it.

Ugh, same. I don't want to deal with having so much room to maintain and repair, and heat, plus I've grown accustomed to living quite minimally. I'm kind of a hippie at heart. I'd say it depends on what the pieces are, what color they are, how easy they are to clean, and how physically comfortable you think you would be wearing it for a school day. Simple pieces (no print, minimal amount of lace and ruffles) in dark colors are typically the easiest to wear in these settings, I'd also suggest that you forgo the wig if you usually wear one, and your petticoat as well, or swap it out for one with minimal poof.
You can't predict how your teachers and classmates will react but at the very least you can make sure you're wearing something cute that won't get in the way of your day.

I think if you're in high school or younger (which you shouldn't be if you're on this board, ik but just as a general rule) I'd say don't. If you're in college, go for it, generally nobody will care.

I say this mostly because I started wearing lolita in middle school and have always been a lifestyler, and was bullied pretty relentlessly for it (among other things).

I will never forget a specific day in 8th grade when I was wearing lolita - long-sleeved blouse and tights, literally the only skin showing was my neck, face and hands, and a girl called me a "wannabe Japanese whore". I also got called "slut" all the time when I wore lolita.

I never wore lolita to high school, but I did wear himekaji/generic kawaii taobao shit. My teachers never thought worse of me, but that's because they already knew I was a hard worker. Personally I'd only start wearing lolita after establishing yourself as a good student, but I would definitely go for it.
Now, I would never wear lolita to class because I'm studying in a field (and school) where my peers and I are in suits half the time for interviews, certain events, presentations, etc. If you're studying something less rigid on dress code I would wear it, but if it's something more strict I'd be more wary.
I do wear jfash to my art class though, but not lolita or anything expensive because I don't want to get paint on my brand. I change into lolita when I get home, and wear it on days I don't have class.

I feel like you kind of have an exceptional experience in terms of bullying, but I really don't think even the majority of the people who are bullied are bullied for their personalities or hygiene. Most of my friends were bullied in middle and high school, and honestly most of the time it was for tiny, ridiculous things - one person got cheated on and was bullied by a bunch of upperclassmen; one of them was bullied daily for "reading too much", I was bullied for studying and being a "tryhard".

Although that being said, I moved around a lot and was constantly the "new kid", so that's probably part of it, in addition to dressing alternatively.

I see casual ALL THE TIME so I'm asking specifically about SWEET. My work has a very casual dress code but I feel like if I turned up in an AP print they might suddenly need to re-clarify what's considered as "casual".

I've worn jsk's with cardigans over them and printed tights etc. before to work and even a tardis dress and a wonder woman print but they were all still muted colours like navy, white, brown and black. Pink, yellow, purple I worry about attracting too much attention despite being the same clothing styles.

Use facebook's search function and just type in embroidery or more specific keywords (cross stitch etc) and groups and pages will pop up.

I recommend only joining closed groups, where only members can see posts, but members lists are public info (so all your cousins and coworkers may see you've joined).

Public groups are open for anyone to comment in so they get a lot of spammers. They'll also potentially show up on your feed and your friends' feeds if you post in one as they're public.

There are also secret groups but you'll probably not be invited to any without first knowing someone else in the group -- they won't even pop up on your searches.

Once you join one or two facebook will also suggest similar groups. The best thing to do is join a few and see how you like them after a week or so. It's all trial and error and every group has a different feel to it. I'd also suggest to feel free to unfollow a group (if it begins to annoy you on your main feed) without leaving the group if you're interested in it otherwise. You can then go visit it at your leisure by clicking on your groups tab without being bombarded by hobby stuff every time you visit facebook.

worry less about colors and more about if the look itself makes you look immature. consider the themes of your prints, and look into cutes that are cute but still mature looking. solids or generic prints like dots or stripes are ideal.consider leaning more retro/vintage sweet for work wear as it looks like you are just stylish and into old clothes.

favor hats, headbands and small barrettes over bows, tights over socks, etc. Normie shoes are best, skirts are easier than dresses, keep tops simple and minimize ruffles, and a jacket or cardigan will help tone down and mature most outfits.

This is one of the best places for help with specific stitches.

It depends on how comfortable you are with stitching. Embroidering your initials on handkerchiefs is an easy way to get started, at least if you are like me and have a bunch of handkerchiefs laying around anyways.

Then I'd suggest moving on to patterns. You can get fabrics with the pattern already printed on, either by itself or as a kit with threads and all. If you need some help figuring out which stitches you can or want to use you can just ask.

Check with your local historic district. Often they cut deals to people willing to renovate older houses and will give you a historic home super cheap. I've only ever done decorative embroidery so I'm also looking forward to others' replies, but honestly if the shopkeepers were saying you'd have ugly knots I have to wonder how skilled they are. My local historic preservation society only has commercial lots for sale right now, but more interesting to me, they offer 1-2% loans for up to 15K on facade improvements or up to 100K on rehab improvements. This is so exciting! I probably wouldn't qualify for the rehab loan since I would want to modernise the interior, but I love the architectural details of these homes on the outside and that facade loan could really help me spruce up a fixer-upper. Not really a lifestyler yet (since poor af student) but I recently picked up making bobbin lace. It's not difficult at all and if you use good thread and proper stitching it can be more durable than the ground fabric you are working on.

The only time where you will see any crap on the backside is if it's a lazy stitcher who carries threads all over the place instead of ending and starting a new thread, or someone who doesn't know how to end a thread properly. It can also turn out a bit messy if you're doing needle painting/silk shading.

For reference you can see my picture with the backsides of one hanky that's had a lot of snot on it and been washed thoroughly over and over, two dishcloths I got from my grandmother that are quite old and a test patch for thread painting.

Just take a bit of care of the backside and it's perfectly usable for clothes.

It's not hard, you just have to keep the bobbins in order. Most of the time it's really systematic right-to-left and left-to-right movement. Of course when there's more bobbins involved more mistakes are made.

The recipe is based on Diana Henry's Lavender Lemon cake.
It should yield 12 servings; I made 19 cupcakes (or muffins if you want without frosting - which honestly tastes better imho).

(Cup) cake ingredients:

>2 large eggs, lightly beaten
>1 cup of milk
>1/2 cup of unsalted butter, melted

>Finely grated zest of 1 unwaxed lemon + 1 tablespoon lemon juice

If you're extra
>Confectioners' sugar, to dust
>Sprigs of fresh lavender, to serve (optional)

For frosting
>3 cups of powdered sugar
>8 oz (1 package) of cream cheese
>1/2 cup of unsalted butter, room temp/softened

1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit

2) Put lavender & then granulated sugar in food processor. Blend til lavender is fine & sugar is pungent

DO NOT PUT MORE THAN RECOMMENDED. Lavender is a very strong herb.

3) Sift flour and then add rest of dry ingredients into a mixing bowl. Stir til uniform.

4) Heat milk til near boil. Steep tea for 2 -5 mins.

I heated it up for 2 mins. You know your microwave settings better than me.

I recommend not being a dummy and doing this ahead of time and letting it cool after steeping because putting the milk in while it's hot will "cook" the dry ingredients.

5) Add wet ingredients. Stir & fold until ribbon-like consistency. It will look very liquid-y and that's ok. Do not over-mix.

Final step: Taste test the ugliest/smallest one.

It should have a semi-sweet & delicate taste of bergamot & lemon. I've found that the lavender notes come after. If you want it more moist, use a half cup of greek or plain yogurt and a half a cup of earl grey tea milk.


Be sure you're using culinary grade lavender when you're making this. From what I heard, cosmetic grade does make the baked goods taste soapy. Picking and drying organically grown lavender is best/easiest imo.

Pinterest anon here! Did a bit of antiquing and got some vintage laces. Wanted to share and also to ask if any of you had tutorials or ideas on how to use them? I'm thinking of finding some loliable blouses and cardigans from the thrift store and adding lace but I'm not sure where to start.

Dammit. I want to make clotted cream and cranberry-orange scones this weekend, and I can only find ultra-pasteurized heavy cream which won't work so well in the slow cooker.

I'm disappointed to find out that Whole Foods stopped carrying them a few years ago. I used to find bottled raw milk there. I can't be arsed to spend $6 on 6 oz of Devon cream.
I was hoping to use the buttermilk part in the future for pancakes. Ugh, I wish I didn't live in a flyover state.

I’m gonna be real with you:
I’m not a professional, basically I just find a design I like and wing it with a pattern, I know McCall and Simplicity both have costume patterns for historical nightgowns, though.
I like using linen fabrics or even old bedsheets with pretty floral designs so it’s extra comfy. I get a lot of joy from thrifting antique shops/consignment shops and finding ‘vintage’ fabric to use.
Pattern making is actually a lot easier than people make it out to be, and once you get past the learning curve being able to make whatever the fuck you want is like a superpower. Advice for that: just use wrapping paper from the dollar store, they usually have brown paper bag paper and that’s cheap as hell and easy to get. Also, to get started with pattern making just start drafting, practice by duplicating a simple piece in your wardrobe and go from there. Annika Victoria has a great little video about replicating a dress she owns that helped me get started, also highly HIGHLY recommend Professor Pincushion for any ‘how do I do this?’ questions.

I have some anise hyssop (Agastache foeniculum, not anise) growing in my backyard meadow and I love it. It's in the mint family and the leaves are edible and taste like licorice, but juicier and with no sugar aftertaste. You can also make delicious tea with it. Not sure how commercially available it is since it's native to my area and moved in by itself, but I highly recommend. Bees and beetles love it too.

I also love making tea with wintergreen leaves, but since I harvest them from the woods I don't know how viable they are in a garden setting. A shady, somewhat moist site should work, especially under deciduous trees.

So I did something I've always avoided and bought a used pillow at goodwill since it had some pretty hand embroidery on it. Now I'm paranoid about how to clean it properly. I'm thinking that machine washing would be too rough on the stitches and I still wouldn't feel confident it was truly clean. I was thinking about taking it apart at a seam, tossing the filling, and handwashing the case. Whether the stitches will hold depends mainly on how well the ends are fastened but it should be fine. I machine wash stuff I've embroidered regularly but I also keep that in mind when I do the embroidery and fasten everything properly.

If you liked the movie, read the book! The movie is fine for what it is, but oh that book... it's reads like a 19th century memoir but written in modern language. Thank you! I'd honestly say it's the other way around for me, I don't think I have the patience for cross stitch but I never tried it. It looks like it would be tiring having so many colours at the same time, having to carry threads all over the place and stopping and starting so many threads. Not to speak of all the counting.

The only time I'd say it's bothersome is if you get the idea to sating stitch or use similar approaches just because of the ridiculous amount of stitches you have to make, it's what I did in the one I posted.

Looks like thread painting embroidery to me (also known as silk shading, or long and short stitch embroidery). You're probably best getting a book on the subject if you're serious about it - Search Press Classics has published "A-Z of Thread Painting", which I don't have, but have found other books in the series helpful. Trish Burr has written some books with very good reviews too. It's a very time-consuming style of embroidery, particularly if you work with only one strand of thread as the Marie Antoinette example you posted looks to have been.

I was planning on just mending >>9678620 so the hole doesn't grow worse, but applique may help! The lady I bought it from said some of her customers take such pieces and cut the edging? collar? out and attach a new piece of linen or lace on the inside. I may experiment with that down the line.

I'd rather go for a different stitch personally. Stem stitch, which can also be whipped if wanted, is about as easy and looks a bit smoother. There are chain stitches too for a thicker look, I like the heavy chain stitch myself.

How do you deal with the stem stitch getting wonky around curves? Am I just making my stitches too big? I like how clean the back stitch is, even if it is simple.

If you have a picture that might help, but as you said just shorten the stitches when you have a tighter curve, the same way you'd need to do with back stitches. If it's a really tight curve you make tiny stitches unless you reach a point where the stitches can't be any smaller on your fabric. And don't be afraid of backing a couple of stitches extra when it doesn't turn out quite right.

I'm not very fond of the back stitch because it doesn't give me a line that is as continuous and there isn't really any texture to it. But I like to overcomplicate everything I do.

I used the stem stitch for the leaf outlines and I'm not totally happy with it. It could just be my lack of experience. I'm starting to appreciate the humble back stitch more, because it works so well for tight lines. Design is from Cozy Blue Handmade. She has all the cuteness.

Mine came out really weird--somehow the entry point, where you're supposed to go back down right next to it to make the loop, ends up being in the middle of the previous stitch instead of at the end of the newly created chain stitch.

I'm a beginner at embroidery but I've had no problem with back stitches, stem stitch, split stitch. This one... just eludes me. Maybe I'll just try super small split stitches for fills.

I can see that you have some trouble with it. First, try to go up through the same hole your previous stitch went down in so you don't have any gaps, secondly as we talked about the stitch length needs to be a bit shorter in the curves.

I stitched up a quick little swirl to show you how it turns out when I do it. I used two strands on the one to the right and one strand to the left. If you end up seeing you it doesn't work out at times, just back up a few stitches extra to shorten the stitches and adjust your angle a little earlier.

I hosted a panel on lifestyle lolita and Rufflecon and suggested the idea, and there was definitely some interest.

I wanted to post in Rufflechat asking for name suggestions, but the mod I messaged for permission never got back to me (it's been two and a half days haha. I should just message another mod, I think)
