If it is your coord, the shoes don't match and that socks/tights combo is gross. I am not a huge fan of the pink wig either, maybe something more natural? As a whole, it is not balanced.... Having brown tea party like shoes would balance it more with the bear head piece.

I agree, the shoes are awful. The socks alone without the tights would have looked better. Also I never like how wristcuffs look with OPs unless you have them somehow attached to the sleeves. In this case it just looks like the sleeves are too short and you're hiding that poorly. Either stick with the pink theme you have going and add some more white or balance out the browns.

you're not using that word correctly, anon. rendering refers to fleshing out your drawing with color and light, not drawing linework over an existing image and using the fill tool.

what i recommend to help get you to where you want to be is to eliminate your tracing little by little. you can start by tracing the general outline or structural shapes and freehanding the details, but eventually you'll want to learn how to set up visual landmarks on your own. photorealism is overrated; if you focus on learning your fundies there's no reason your art can't look the way you want it to along the way. sage for /ic/ but again, i really apologize for my extra salt.

Naryt but as another anon pointed out, your attention to detail with regards to clothing is really nice, however some of the faces you've drawn tend to look a little "uncanny valley", they're a bit too featureless.
A way to remedy this would to maybe try to apply your skill with detail to the face a bit more, as opposed to focusing too highly on the coordinate. some added eyelashes, fleshing out the cheeks, and added depth to the nose would do wonders.

I agree. I need to commit to fully stylizing the face instead of this weird in-between that I've been doing. It looks flat because of the realistic facial proportions, but it ends up looking worse if I attempt to add any amount of detail in "ink". If I go full anime-eyes, the flatter color and minimal details should make more sense visually.

In the meantime, here is an attempt at a quick fix. Tweaked the eyes, raised the opacity of the makeup layer, and raised the overall saturation levels to give a pinker color to the skin. It doesn't address the underlying issue, but that'll need to wait for the next full attempt.

It’s just a clash in styles, because you directly ink in pools of shadows when it comes to clothes, so they look like 3D forms built out of shadows, but when it comes to human anatomy you revert to communicating in symbols — a round line for face. A pointy shape for eyes. Lots of flat 2D lines, all the same width, for hair. The disconnect is there — where you switch from building a form from shadows vs communicating what an object is with flat lines as “symbols” rather than building up its form.

imo you don’t really need to commit to one weird stylisation or another. Just stick to one mode of communication. Either ink all the shadows from head to toe, or limit yourself to flat outlines with their clothes. One or the other, just stick to it.

Very good point. I’ve hesitated on inking the face and hair the same way as the rest of the picture. I’ll outline everything in shadows next time and see if I like the result. It has been really satisfying bypassing my reliance on symbol-drawing by focusing on super-small details out of context. The main design on the dress in particular turned out really well, but it felt a bit like random scribbles while I was working on that section.

Thank you. This is a good example of the other way I could take things. Exaggerating the eye makeup looks kind of weird up-close, but it makes sense in context. It’s like how animation studios get away with putting gigantic eyes on their characters. The audience quickly gets used to the style, and it gives a lot more room to visually communicate expressions.

I did a few shorter tests in an attempt to improve my approach to faces. Some turned out better than others, but I like the results overall. Finding the right balance between heavy shadows and light spots is tough. The effect can look really unflattering if the shadows get too blobby or lifeless if the light spots are too prominent.
