I agree with >>9684052 that that's probably a brooch or something. Proportions suggest it's tiny (I've never seen gimp braid that wide) and I think the thing underneath it is a rosette.

Yeah, the screw post on the EGA goes through an eyelet in the fabric cover and through the metal bracket on the front. And the metal band expands which makes it easier to take the fabric cover off and put it back on.

I actually made my own frame out of cheap plastics once for a steampunk outfit, unlike a proper frame tho, I didn't connect the crown-frame to the rest of the hats frame.

I’m not sure, but they remind me of the kind of headdresses that were originally meant to secure caps to the head and developed into something more decorative and less functional over time, until people started to wear them by themselves. Historically, women in coastal fishing villages in my area would wear starched caps that covered their hair and were secured by heavily reinforced bands which were then hidden by strips of lace and embroidered fabric, depending on the woman’s social and economic status. I think maid headdresses have a similar origin but again, I’m not sure. Either way, lolita headdresses are probably inspired by cute maid headdresses rather than salty fisherwomen lol
