I've been thinking about trying out lolita fashion but I'm worried that I might not look good in it. In most good lolita pictures I've seen the girl tends to be asian and a lot of the non asian lolita pictures tend to look a lot less good. However a lot of the asians ones do seem more professionally shot so that could play a role in it.
Bottom line is, can non asian lolitas look just as good as asian lolitas?

Idk, why don't you ask Innocent World, Victorian Maiden, Juliette et Justine, Atelier Pierrot, and other Japanese brands who've gone out of their way to hire white models?

Certain brands are very forgiving, others not so much. I've had dresses with a minimum waist measurement of 70cm with elastic on top of that and dresses with a maximum 65cm waist with no give at all. Overall, though, I've known several girls who are actually medically obese who fit (or "fit") into lolita clothing. But whether you think they look good is up to you.

>> No.9662503

>>9662470
If you're of average height, you still want to be on the low end of healthy BMI to fit brand without stretch. Lower if you're taller. If you're chubby, it also depends on where you store your fat, and if you're really short, like under are just about five feet, you might still fit if you're technically obese.

If you're tall and stout, brand OPs are off the table. I'm tall-ish but skinny, and fit the non-elastic waist band of the size 1 JetJ skirts, but I'm not going to tempt fate and buy an OP or a JSK without stretch unless it's a size 2. I fit VM but long sleeves on OPs are just a hint too short and I add lace in the same color. And good quality lace is a bitch to find.

If you have big boobs, you may be shit out of luck for many OPs, but if your waist is slim you can still get many skirts and coord them with blouses and cardigans. Investing in bras that keep your boobs from flopping or loafing is important, you want to look elegant and not like a tavern wench.

If you store your fat in your abdomen and are apple shaped, you wanna lose that fat for your health anyway, but ordering dresses without shirring would be fruitless, and your best bet is empire waist or sack shaped dresses.

Brands don't give a rat's ass about "fat shaming" (never mind tall shaming or masculine frame shaming), they're a niche fashion and unlike taobao sellers, don't sell enough volume to make plus sizes profitable.

>> No.9662505

>>9662416
I've seen Russian twinks look better in Lolita than average Japanese girls. Of course the ones in magazines and brand promotion material look very cute: they're models, and what imperfections they have are photoshopped. Look at Mana sama, those pictures aren't woozy because he's a perfect ethereal twink, they're deliberately hazy to hide that he's a man in his late forties, with all the skin imperfections that implies.

>> No.9662511

>>9662467
There is no real guide that I know of, and it depends on the brand of course (Angelic Pretty and Metamorphose are going to be more suitable for bigger sizes than Mary Magdalene or Victorian Maiden).
It also depends on the age of the dress; older dresses are mostly shorter and smaller than newer ones, especially in the bust.

Generally I think you're gonna have real trouble fitting into dresses if your waist is over 75cm or your bust is over 98cm.
I have a 68cm waist which is mostly fine except for some oldschool skirts from classic brands, and a 96cm bust that is a real pain to fit into dresses.

You also have to think about shoulder measurements; I didn't bother thinking about those until I got an IW OP and I found out I have actual quarterback shoulders. Besides that, just make good choices keeping your body shape in mind. If you have fat arms, you're not gonna want to do short puff sleeves or cap sleeves. If you have a huge bust, you don't want highwaisted cuts. If you are very tall, look into longer length dresses.
The fashion isn't completely static making it only suitable for one body type. There's lots of changes you can make and styles you can wear to better suit your body.
I look terrible in highwaisted short dresses with puff sleeves. I look great in long dresses with a natural or low waist and long sleeves. Does that mean I look good or bad in lolita?

I think a large part of dressing in lolita that people overlook is dressing for one's face. Of course you should wear what you want! Completely! But if you feel like things just don't look right, maybe your face doesn't suit it. Personally there's no race that looks better in any style than any other, it's just about knowing what looks good. Say you have a masculine face with a long nose and square jaw, maybe try steering away from bright pastel makeup and wigs because it might be jarring (some people need to get the newsflash that platinum blonde wigs aren't a natural colour). But that doesn't mean you can't wear sweet, it just means maybe try natural hair colours and makeup that neutralises bolder features.

I mean, that's only one example. As long as your clothes fit and you're happy, who cares? It's not a race war, it's a niche fashion that you should feel like a million bucks in, not as if you're competing.

I hate that no one can take a good photo of me. I get too anxious and it feels impossible to make friends in my comm. So I feel like I'll never be comfortable enough to actually pose in photos.

I take my own photos at home and I look great tho. Not just selfies either. I use my dslr and get pretty good shots.

It just makes me feel more out of place at meets when we all go to take pics and people always offer it to me and I can't hide how I feel about seeing some shitty pic a girl has taken of me. I just thank them cause I know they're not doing it on purpose. But its so fucking annoying and I can't get passed it because I know I don't look that terrible but their photos are so unflattering.

Vibes, gestures, the way someone carries themselves...these are all more important than face or looks. Like >>9663654 mentioned, sweet suits Lor because if her personality.

Imo though, the one caveat is if you're fat. I don't mean slightly chubby, I mean really fat. Then lolita will suit you even less. I'm not saying you have to be a stick or have a bmi of <20, just be healthy. You can even be a little chub and still be fine! I have a 85cm bust and 65cm waist and feel like these are pretty ideal for my preferred styles, which are classic and old school sweet. Smallest max I’ve ever owned was 66cm waist skirt from 2005. On the other hand, I’ve tried on many pieces that were awkwardly baggy on me even with corset lacing.

So I’d say that if you’re into really old oldschool gothic and classic 80-85cm bust and 60-65cm waist may be ideal, but if you’re buying modern stuff I’d say 65-70cm waist is definitely more accurate. You do need narrow shoulders and smaller arms for most OPs, though.

I was gonna say, 60-65cm waist is smaller than most current releases, and tends to result in a ridiculous amount of fabric bunching at the back/sides with waist ties.

I hope you're still there anon. 100cm is a large bust size but by no means too big to look good in lolita. There's always the obvious solution of skirts, but if you don't like those you don't have to resort to them. You could look into shirred Meta pieces and even some specific Innocent World cut. I own pic related and it could easily go up to a bust of 110cm, whereas it can fit any waist size because of the shirring. If you find that your dresses hit you too high on the waist because of your bust pulling them up, it's a good idea to lengthen the straps in case they are adjustable. You don't need much sewing skill and it makes the fit look a lot better. Definitely try to stay away from high-waisted cuts in any case.

When it comes to blouses you can always go for custom-sized taobao or indie brand, but Japanese brand is going to either not fit or have a gap between the buttons on the bust. I've found cutsews to be a great solution and a comfy addition to my wardrobe. Especially long-sleeved lacy sweater-like cutsews are great to wear under jsks.

>>9663896
Stilll here! Thank you so much for the suggestions, anon! I browsed lolibrary to look at some Meta pieces because of the shirring and I like some of the jsk's; the space between my natural waist and bust is short so I worry about skirt bands disappearing, but I suppose I'll end up with a lot of trial and error with fit regardless of what I go for. Thank you again!

can someone explain what exactly boobloafs are and how you get them/get rid of them? I used to think it was just fat/big-breasted girls in lolita dresses that were bordering/definitely too tight for them, but I have seen gulls complain about boobloafs on girls without huge breasts/not fat, and I am so confused.

>> No.9664228

>>9664154
Boobloaf is when you wear a dress that's too small in the bust and creates a single "uniboob" sort of look. It happens a lot with IW dresses on people with breasts larger than a B cup, even if they're well under the max measurements.
A few ways to mend this are:
-Consider how the dress fits you and what exactly is creating the boobloaf. If you're wearing a JSK and the bodice is sitting too high on your torso (so your boobs fit in the underbust section rather than where they should), you can lengthen the shoulder straps either by adding fabric or resewing the buttons in the back.
-Alternatively, if the bodice is sitting where it should and/or it's an OP which may be harder to modify, you can wear a bolero or cardigan on top to cover it up, or see if you can find a better bra to wear with your dress (sometimes sports bras create boobloafs); personally, if modifying is not an option, I'd suggest looking for a different dress to wear. It's an obvious sign that the dress doesn't fit you and it's not a good look.

I thing is I worry about it height though as some dresses (particularly IW and Haenuli lengths with long bodices) make me look like I've been eaten by a lampshade with a tube on the top and stumpy legs sticking out the bottom.

Oh god I have wide shoulders and big biceps. I need help getting this OP on but it' always very clmfortable once I get it on. Face is the most important, good legs are a bonus, shortness is another bonus. Fat will almost always make you look bad and unable to find fitting clothes, i have seen some cute chubbers but they are thin by american standards.
A lot of the designers for these clothes are asian, so having a flatter chest helps but doesn't make it impossible if youre oppai.

>> No.9688447

>>9662416
I kind of agree. Asians tend to have much smaller frames, which plays up the cute aspects of lolita. Fanny is very thin (she often needs to wear belts even with Mary Magdalene dresses), and she tends to emphasize the 'elegant' aspect of the style.

A decent amount of her coords aren't even from traditional lolita dressmakers. She focuses more on elegant 40's style-dresses and chignon/tied-up hair styles.

Other races can absolutely look good in lolita, but I do think that Asians usually look the best in the style.

I'd say this is actually too small.
I'm 83-86/63-66 depending on diet/time of the month, and many dresses are too big on me to look good.
I'm sure there are pieces that are still too small for me, but a lot of AP, Baby, IW, and ETC is too big.
Out of the brands I've owned a lot of, I think Meta and Baby do the best job of making sizing adjustable. Their bodices always look nice, even when the corset lacing is tightened a good bit, and they release a lot of different cuts/styles with differing sizes.
Personally, I love Baby for their unshirred pieces, too. Their smaller sizes fit me like a glove.

It isn´t a lie, unless you have verry much muscle your fat puts you at a risk at that point.
Bodyfat% is a more accurate measure for health aspects than BMI.

I fit in child sieze M due to beeing small and having a BMI of 21.

The point is you can't have a hard and fast rule like 'anything over 24/25 is overweight' if there are exceptions as you just admitted. There are plenty of girls who are just muscular being told by the school nurse or doctor that they are fat then ending up fucking bulimic. I am certainly NOT the only one on the planet to have experienced this. The whole way through my recovery I fought the diets they were prescribing me/being force fed/followed to the toilet because according to the numbers/the BMI rules I was being pushed my further and further into the 'overweight' category.

You have very similar measurements to me (I'm 87-66). Would you mind sharing what sort of cuts (or specific dresses) fit you well? >> No.9688626

>>9688606
What are your preferred styles/brands?
I'm more on the sweet side with a splash of otome, so most of my experience is there. I'm also pretty short (156cm).

In general, I have to avoid dresses with full or even partial back shirring but no corset lacing. These will simply be too big or baggy, especially if the elastic is stretched in any way.

For example, AP's Honey Cake Round JSK, Petit Patisserie Tiered JSK, Chess Chocolate Jabot JSK, Little Bears Cafe High Waist JSK, etc. are all too big. The other versions of these, however, are okay; they might bunch a bit when tightened up, but they still look good.

With Baby/AatP, the Miranda JSK cut (pic related) fits and flatters me incredibly well, as do the cuts of Chandelier Flocky I (unshirred) and Circus Tutu (shirred with lacing in back and front).
Fragrant Rose Memories Camelot cut is another stunner.

IW is usually okay, but their bodices just fit me like shit in general because of my boobs (28D-F). I like that they have longer and shorter lengths, though.

I've only recently got into Meta, but so far I like their collared JSKs and the Pintuck Tiered JSKs. The latter is sooo comfy.

I'm sorry this is all over the place. If you have more specific questions, I can try to help. My wardrobe is pretty small at the moment, but I've owned a lot of different dresses at some point or another.

I have literally never been to the gym or lifted weights in my life but work very, very hard at my job. I volunteered at riding schools all through my teens and was forever frustrated that the more physical activity I did, the more weight I put on. I was always the heaviest in my class even when I got to a size where people started putting their hands all the way around my waist. It made no sense to me. Frustrating as hell.

I like that lolita hides my thunder thighs. I hate that people most likely assume my arms are just fat in tight blouses though. My back is too wide for lots of things but there can be a lot of sag in the waist. I'm short so dresses that are too long make me look stumpy, but an inch above the knee shows the size of my legs. My lower thigh is comparable to other people's upper thigh so it looks particularly bad/slutty on me if a skirt is 2cm too short.

I can't imagine someone with 30cm shoulders encountering anything that's too small for them unless they're trying to wear clothes meant for children.

I've struggled with this so much. I've lost a lot of weight and can finally fit into brand but always feel a bit strange as I have more of an hourglass figure. Additionally my face looks like a horse took a shit.

>However a lot of the asians ones do seem more professionally shot
Heavily Photoshoped to adjust lightning and remove imperfections, not to talk about swooping the whole face if needed/liked. A lot more Asians understand how to use Photoshop and similar tools good compared to Western people who on average use it less and make more misstakes. The "professional" thing is a big part adjusting light well instead of using some filter app.

>Bottom line is, can non asian lolitas look just as good as asian lolitas
Yes. Generally, just dress for your body and something that suits you. East-Asians do have some common features in their race that make most humans naturally think they are more cute or look better (wide cheekbones and downturned tearducts are examples) and more often take good care of their skin, but there is no way you can't overcome that with proper styling. Just style for how you look, not how you want to look.
