Also, I've finally updated the store list. Instead of it being a massive wall of text everything is now placed in an easy to use sortable table. Unfortunately the current table plug-in doesn't allow for links, but it will have to do for now.
You can find the list in all it's glory at https://churi.nl/stores/ and feel free to recommend me any store you feel is missing.

At some point earlier this year Showmasters decided to rename "Rotterdam Comic Con" to "Cosplay Con Europe". As the name implies the idea was to have it focus more on cosplay rather than the overall geek culture both ACC and RCC targets. However other than a single FB event things remained silent until they eventually deleted the event(?) and went back to calling it RCC. I guess they simply couldn't arrange enough cosplay content (yet) to justify calling it a cosplay convention.

>>9661463
It's good to hear you enjoy these threads Anon. Unfortunately rotten apples are everywhere and to be found in any community. Personally I try to stay clear of these people and instead choose to surround myself with people who are fun, honest and challenge me to become a better person. It just makes everything a lot more enjoyable and productive.

No idea if you're talking about anyone in specific but perhaps it's a control thing? During a private shoot you're in full control over your poses, outfits and most importantly, which pictures you actually share with the world. If you're already self-conscious about say your thighs, you can just share the pictures where they look good and keep all the unflattering ones to yourself. That's simply a luxury you won't have when walking around at a con, not to mention how uncomfortable it might feel showing off that one part of your body at a con.

Hi everyone,

This post is slightly late, since it's about the Amsterdam Comic Con. Yet it never struck me that I could ask YOU guys for help!
You see, when attending the con a man in a wheelchair approached me. He had a slightly dark skin, and if I remember correctly he was wearing a cap. I also think something was wrong with his eyes, but I'm not so sure about that.
Anyways, he asked to take a few pictures of me, so I politely accepted. Although I was kind of uneasy about it, since I was dressed casually. He retook some of the photo's, and asked me if I had done modelling before etc., which lead to quite a strange remark.
Eventually, the pictures were taken, and I asked him where I could find them. He said he didn't have a card, but that they'd "appear on Facebook". He also gave me the name of a website that I tried to look up but couldn't find. He showed me his name, which was quite long and kind of difficult?
In the end, I never saw those photo's again, and after our strange encouter, I'd really like to know WHO took them, and how they turned out!

So if any of you know who I'm talking about, please tell me!

I'll greentext some aspects of him if that makes things easier;
>wheelchair
>tanned skin
>lousy eye (?)
>cap
>long, intricate name

Thank you so much!

Or just say no the moment you no longer trust the situation, get the fuck away and report it to the staff if it's something serious. Even if someone tries to stop you, you're still at a Dutch convention which means you are surrounded by tons of people at all times. All it takes is an angry or panicked scream to get help if you need it, which you probably won't anyway. There's a reason we often talk about the same few creeps in the community, because they're the only ones we got after all these years and they're all banned for life. Honestly I feel the odds of something serious happening on your way to work are way higher than when visiting a Dutch con.

>>9665800
>At least then you're not in extreme fear of random stalk/rape
I get not liking it when someone checks you out, catcalls or makes sexual remarks pointed at you. Been there, yes I can really suck that popsicle, get your hand of my crotch right now, #MeToo and such. But believing everyone who checks you out wants to rape you? That's really one unhealthy way to see the world! I do hope this isn't how you actually see the world, but if you do please seek some help with coping whatever trauma caused you to believe in this distorted view of the world. Life's too short to be living it in non-stop fear, especially when that fear is completely uncalled for.

>> No.9666008

>>9665690
Sorry that happened to you. I've never heard of this guy, but I think you can reasonably assume those pictures are going to be unfindable if they were ever even uploaded in the first place. Its not the actual thing happening, im talking about the fear that it could happen. That shit haunts man. Ofcourse youre safe in a public convention like that. But it doesnt mean this stuff wont follow you to the point youre still looking for answers a year after the con already passed.

>> No.9666117

>>9666107
That fear is kinda irrational though. Dutch conventions are generally a very safe place. There are always people around and volunteers or even security can often be found within arms reach. It's important to work through that fear and relearn the difference between imagined danger and actual risks.

And before you say 'that's easier said than done': Been there, done that. It takes time, but fear can be overcome. Atleast partly. In my case it took nearly two years to travel by public transportation alone after dark again, but eventually, after doing that exact thing over and over again (with having back-ups in place, like someone picking me up from the station), it's became a lot easier. In the end, living with fear was a lot worse than the thing that happened.

>> No.9666135

The only times I feel unsafe is walking between the con and hotel when a 'nice guy' wants to walk you back. And I just tell them politely to fuck off. bigger cities have claire's. in Arnhem there's a really cute cake shop in the Hemelrijk passage if I remember correctly. In Nijmegen there are also a few cupcake and cake shops (on plein 1944).

If you happen to find yourself in Groningen, I would also reccomend Simsalabim, it's one of the very few alternative fashion shops here. it's mostly gothic, but you might find something cute there and the staff is really friendly.

if you fancy bagels, I like to go to Bagels&beans, you can find them in most bigger cities, sometimes a bit hidden in smaller streets. Amazing Oriental is a bigger Ashian grocery store where you can often find some nice snacks and drinks, like pocky and ramune.

Hey guys, a friend and I are looking for a fun anime related convention to attend, and I was hoping people here may have the insights necessary to make a good suggestion. We've been thee conventions before; Facts in Belgium (which sucked) and twice to Dokomi in Germany (which was kind of fun last year, but sucked this year). This time we wanna attend one in the Netherlands (we are both Dutch).

My friend likes it when he can buy lots of shit, and is able to attend events and stuff (meet and greets with voice actors, and that kind of stuff), cosplay is cool too of course.

tl;dr: what is the best anime-related convention in the Netherlands?

Animecon in the Hague is considered to be the best anime convention the Netherlands has to offer. It's a yearly con that takes place in June and the 2018 edition will also mark their 20th anniversary. Aside from the mandatory dealer room they have plenty of workshops and lectures to attend. Some of these events are targetted exclusively at adults which makes or a nice change from the standard stuff you might expect. As far as cosplay goes they host several competitions and international preliminaries so there's a lot of quality stuff to look out for.

Abunai in Veldhoven is considered the second best anime convention and usually takes place at the end of August. Aside from the usual stuff they too offer workshops and panels. The competitions are nothing special however and you will get lost in the hallways there. The location itself is nice and offers plenty of nature but it also makes it hard to obtain a hotel room. The con is known for their "hotel room hunger games" and people feeling "Abunaaid" when they don't get one.

Then you have the other cons. Nishicon in Almelo takes place in February and was kinda meh last year. Then again it was also their first year as a three day con instead of one. Hopefully this year will be better.

DynamicCon in Eindhoven is a one day con in January which will haev their second edition this year. Last year was okay from what I've heard.

Finally TomoCon is considered the worst con of all. Entry is cheap making it interesting for newcomers and youngsters, but you really get what you pay for. Honestly I wouldn't bother with it as your first Dutch Con experience. They also have several TomoFair editions at which as the name implies is more of a market rather than a real convention. You can buy merchandise there, eat weeb food, enjoy their bouncy castle (not joking) and that's about it.

No problem Anon. While you asked for only anime themed conventions we do have a few more small cons as well as three comic cons and two fantasy cons.

Yaycon is a LGBT oriented one day anime event. If you enjoy panels on Yuri on Ice and sexuality this is your place to be. Formula Cosplay is another one day anime event. It's hosted inside a school and that's all you need to know. Then there's Viencon, a new con which is planned to be held at Center Parcs. Not much is known yet on the actual content however but the prices are nice for a 4 day stay imho.

The comic cons are mostly just big dealer rooms with some special guests, a cosplay competition and oversized sponsored stands. Dutch Comic Con in Utrecht tries to include some more content (workshops and lectures) although it's still far from the "Dutch standard". Amsterdam and Rotterdam Comic Con are organised by Showmasters and as such draw in the better special guests. Still, expect to pay €30 or more just to get a picture or an autograph from any guest. Also be on the lookout for bootlegs as the comic cons don't really mind dealers selling them.

The Dutch fantasy fairs are Castlefest and Elfia. Both have two editions a year and most people like them both. If I recall correctly Castlefest has more music stuff where Elfia has more cultural stuff. I don't really go there tho.

Finally you have FirstLook is a gaming event which these days has become just as irrelevant as the blokes from Gamekings and PU who are in charge over it. These last few editions they've tried to lure in cosplayers by promising cosplay content, competitions and such but never really deliver. This year especially was a trainwreck as they had no schedule, no interesting or new games and all cosplay content got cancelled last minute without any explanation. My advice? Avoid it like the plague!

To be fair I feel like most of the customers Minque had were people who didn't knew about any of the other stores. Minque used to sponsor/host workshops at nearly every con bringing in all the newcomers to their store. The same also goes for the cosplayers they sponsored who would post tutorials and tell their fans how everything was bought at Minque. Combine that with the "renaming scheme" to make common items look store exclusive and they were set. I mean just look back at the message in which they announced they would quit. So many people were sad to see them go and had no idea where to buy their supplies now.

Oh well, judging by their own comments they're back with a new team. Perhaps this time around orders won't be mysteriously postponed for several weeks without bothering letting your customers know about it.

4) Get loads of money from newcomers to the cosplay scene who simply don't know any better.

>I hope they'll just normal names for their products now
I doubt it, but I can understand the reasoning behind it. Like I said Minque used to sponsor a lot of (entry level) workshops and cosplayers who make (simple) tutorials using their items. Generally the audience for these workshops and tutorials are newcomers to the scene and crafting who have no idea on what to use or where to get it. By continuously referring to materials as DuraFoam or DuraCoil people will remember these items as such, and not by their common names EVA foam or contact glue.
One these people are motivated from a workshop/tutorial to start crafting themselves odds are they will either go directly to Minque or google the material names. Of course with them being the only ones selling these supplies under this name only their store will pop up.

Honestly it's just clever marketing. You slap a buzzword name on something to make people think only of your store, hide the fact that's a common item and easily bought for less elsewhere, and maybe raise the price a bit for some some easy money. Also it's not just Minque who does this, CosplayClues pulls the same stunt with their CLUEYfoam (standard EVA foam), CLUEYfixx (basic contact glue) and CLUEYprime (literally one part white wood glue mixed with one part tap water).

Terracon on the other hand had no idea what they where up to, mixing two completely different audiences was probably the worst idea ever. They closed their joke of a convention hours before it was supposed to close. Because almost nobody showed up...

Yes it's a thing, but not in the sense of let's check all rooms for no reason whatsoever. Well.. In a way, yes. But there's a difference between getting that attention by just attending the con and competing, or actively promoting yourself through social media & patreon.

Yeah I love the attention I get when I'm in a good costume and I'm on stage. But I don't really feel the need to be extremely active with social media and get as many likes as possible. It's a personal matter imo and it varies a lot per person.

There's a difference between attention and fame. Plenty of people enjoy just recieving compliments for cosplaying their favourite character well, giving crafting/sewing advice to fellow fans, and so on. >> No.9676601

>Are people that dumb and gullible?
Is this a rhetorical question? Of course they are! Pop music, pictures of models, fucking burger commercials, all of these things are altered and yet we keep falling for them. Who cares if an artist's can't actually sing live, if a model doesn't look perfect or of the burger you're eating looks nothing like the picture? Nobody!
Even in cosplay there's a business side to these things that separates the hobbyists from the professionals. Big names didn't just got big overnight, they played their cards right, had some luck and continued to please their fans afterwards. They work hard on building a reputation (overall reputation, not gull reputation) and network like crazy in order to get invited to cons which often means advertising said con to their followers. Why else do you think you keep seeing the same 'big names' invited everywhere instead of random nobodies with good costumes?
There's a reason some people dont want to go through all this trouble just to get cosfamous. It sucks the fun out of things, especially when PR/self-marketing doesn't come as first nature to you.
