I dunno if this is the right place to post but it's kind of related.

I have a closet that is deeper then it is wide so there are two rows of closet bars, one in front of the other.
My problem right now is that it's a huge nuisance to reach the dresses in the back row so I end up not wearing them as often. Is there a way to fix this problem?

There's not a lot to balance, the normie part of my wardrobe is minuscule in comparison so it doesn't take up too much space in the first place.
>what's your best space saving tip
This is what I struggle with actually; my wardrobes are well organized but quite full. At this point I'll probably just have to invest in a new, bigger closet.

I you have money you can build a rolling shelf/super-tall-drawer thingy with a shelf on the back and one or two bars on the front (depending of how tall your stuff are). This could optimize the space imo.

Cotton blouses will crease. As an old school fag only few of my tops are foldable and it would be pretty stupid to have only few of them away from the rest of my wardrobe.

>> No.9661526

>what do you hang vs what do you fold
I hang and display OPs, skirts and JSKs that are in season, also jackets and coats, and the cardigans I wear with the OPs/JSKs/SKs. I fold almost everything else, except for cotton shirts. Normie clothes on hangers and out of season Lolita are in the closet.

>how do you balance your lolita wardrobe with your normie wardrobe in your closet
I've only been buying lolita for half a year, most of my stuff is still normie, but it takes up way less space as none of the skirts are as voluminous. I've mercilessly konmari'd all of the normie stuff that I didn't like to make room for frills, and have two large drawers under my bed, one with color and one black/white/gray, with everything folded konmari style. Not buying more normie clothes unless I throw something out first, because there's limited room in there. I'm wearing Lolita at least once a week, and hope to increase that to two or three times a week in the future. I've got all I want this year for main pieces and am just looking to add some blouses.

>what's your best space saving tip
Bought washing nets to store my petticoats. I've got a bunch off petticoats of which the poof won't deflate even if slightly compressed, and I store them folded in washing nets that reduce them to a fourth of the volume of what they take up on hangers. I keep my shoes in a Billy book shelf, and can adjust the shelves according to the height of my shoes.

I'm going to use my winter bonus to get a new desk, vanity, and one of those wider hanger stands from Ikea. Like most gulls, I think, looking at my collection makes me happy, and now the display hanger is rather narrow and at full capacity.

Strange question prompted by extreme feels:

>has anyone ever built their own wardrobe?
I just moved house from a place with a lovely built in wardrobe to a rental with nothing. I have been living there for a month an a half without moving my wardrobe because I can't find an appropriate wardrobe. I've asked for advice a few times but all I get is "urg, people normally buy their furniture from Ikea". nothing is load bearing enough for a large wardrobe (50+ pieces and growing) and I have tried op shopping for an antique that was built to last, but even then they don't have enough space in them.

I am at my wits end anons, all I can find that will carry approx. 80kg is some ugly industrial frame.

Ignore the front rod. Actually, remove it if you can.

Then buy a free-standing clothes rack/cabinet on wheels that fits into your closet (under the rod, if you couldn't remove it). Now you can utlise the full closet space, but it's much easier to roll the cabinet/clothes rack out of the way to get to the dresses at the back.

A practical concern is that the lightweight rolling clothes racks like to tip over when you push them around, so if possible I'd say go for a rolling cabinet, and store your heavier things at the bottom of it (eg- winter clothes and blankets). That way they're less likely to tip over when you roll them in and out.

I wonder how the original occupants used the space. Maybe they used the back space to hold out-of-season clothing and cycled the front to the back occassionally?

>> No.9664311

>50+ pieces and growing

Stop looking for one single magical wardrobe that fits all the dresses you will ever buy. It doesn’t exist, and there’s a reason the only wardrobes that can hold up that much weight is industrial-looking; dresses are darn heavy, and clothes rods will actually bend, maybe break if they’re stretched over long distances holding up heavy clothes.

What does exist is multiple smaller wardrobes that you can line up, like 6 in a row against a wall, or you can put a wardrobe in every room in your rental, and store your lolita distributed across multiple rooms. Fluffy frilly dresses do actually take up a lot of room anyway, if you squish it all into one small cupboard (speaking relatively) you’re likely to damage something or be unable to find something when you want it. If you want to have that many frilly dresses, you'll have to get used to them taking up some significant amount of space, squishing them does them no favours (and can cause colour transfers if you store the wrong dresses next to each other).

The only thing unsuitable about Ikea wardrobes is that everything apparently needs to be bolted to the wall except for that one really flimsy PS wardrobe you could roll around. I think someone said the PAX is fine not being fully fixed to the wall, but it may be a better idea anyway to shop for some freestanding wardrobes or clothes rack at some other furniture store.

I’ve got about double that amount of main pieces (and some unmanageable number of blouses and matching things), I’m going the route of taking over the entire guest bedroom and turning it into a “lolita shop” display room complete with clothes racks from some wholesaler shops that normally sell them to actual clothes shops. Lolita just takes up a lot of room, but I'm pretty deep into it, so I'm going all-in and dedicating a whole room to storing all my dresses in.

I used to organize by color, but I've since switched to organizing by type/length. I find it easier to coordinate things now, both lolita and normie outfits, because I can go "I want a skirt" and see all of my skirts at once, as opposed to trying to remember which colors I have of which types, like, "oh, a navy skirt would look nice with this." only to realize I don't have a navy skirt.

I also fully admit that I play into the konmari suggestion of having your clothes rise to the right, which can really only be done if you organize by type.

The good thing about this is that you can easily make it match any aesthetic just by using different paper and ribbon, and you can make it whatever size you want. Personally, I have one larger one for bigger, cheer-leader type bows, and then this smaller one.

I wanted to make a blog post explaining how to make these but never got around to it. I think it's pretty self-explanatory, though. Basically you use a cardboard base, cover it in scrapbooking paper or wrapping paper, tape it to the back, and then take strips of ribbon and staple them at even intervals. Staple the back of it so it doesn't show through the front. then add a little loop of ribbon so you can hang it up.

I hope this helps!

Ugh, I'm having issues with this too. My hats are all dark colored and some are wool/velvet, so dust/lint is a major problem. What I do currently is slip a large organza drawstring bag (basically those gift bags you can get in bulk) over each of the smaller and medium sized hats, and hang them up on hooks by the strings.

I'm trying to figure out a better way though, since I have more hats than I can accommodate like this, and it's a clusterfuck if I hang them all up. Plus I don't know what to do with large hats and bonnets. Right now those are on wig stands and covered with scarves, or in the original brand boxes. I wish I could display them all in a cute way but lack the shelf space and don't want to leave them exposed to dust indefinitely.

Most of my hats are minihats that fit into clear shoeboxes.

I was going to suggest regular household storage boxes. They come in various sizes and many places stock them. You'd be able to stack them together for space, and if you buy the clear ones you can see what's inside (which is my main dislike with old-fashioned shoe boxes). Alternatively, a chest of drawers if the drawers are deep enough for the hats and bonnets.

Garment bags and vacuum bags.

There's no real way to stop dust from settling on things you don't touch for ages (like old cosplays). At least a vacuum bag is easier to wipe down and keeps the dust from directly settling on your clothes. If it's something you use often enough that vacuum-sealing is a pita but still dusty, use a garment bag. Keep these all grouped together in one section of your closet and make it a point to clean this section of your closet once every few months/one a year or whatever frequency suits you so the dust build-up doesn't get too far out of control.

My partner and I are building our own wardrobes - partly because it needs to be sturdy as we're both into wearing alternative fashions of various sorts, so we both have lots of bulky items, and a LOT of clothes. We've started with lumber, and bought sturdy rails and brackets, and because we own (well, pay a mortgage on) our own house, we can build it directly to the wall, so we've picked an external brick wall to build it against rather than drywall. One thing we regret doing is not building it to standard built-in-wardrobe sizes, so we can't just buy a bunch of pre-made wardrobe doors for it. We've got three closets - one large one each for our clothes, and one big one in the corner for all the household stuff like towels, duvets, blankets, comforters, etc. Each of our closets has two rails - one top one going right across, supported in the middle, and one half-way across one - this means I've got blouses above skirts on one side (and shorter jackets, boleros, etc.) and then on the other side I have dresses, long jackets, peignoirs, etc. and I can fit even my full-length period-style gowns in there. Above the top of the wardrobes are cupboards, and that's where all my folded stuff goes. I don't keep accessories or shoes in my closet. Shoes live downstairs in a shoe cupboard near the front hall because I'm very strict about no shoes worn in the house.

So, I got a portable closet with a thick fabric cover and put it in the furthest corner of the living room. All of my roommates know not to touch it, there's no risk of sun damage, and I can easily access 99% of my things without any fuss. Low-traffic area, I can clean it weekly without worrying about messing with anyone's stuff, and my dresses are kept safe. Highly recommend it.

If dust is an issue then you're always going to need covered storage whether that's clear boxes, enclosed shelves or something else. To be honest, it sounds like you may need to install more shelving or just rotate things out. If the latter, I recommend like...a picture board sort of thing to document what you own so you can keep tabs when things are stored out of sight.

Everyone does it differently. I currently have mine by type and color - going light to dark, since my wardrobe is mostly red and black.

First are tops (blouses, cutsews, boleros) - white to black, and then dresses , starting with lightest red to black, and then skirts in similar order.

Accessories are more will nilly because I'm only able to store them in a Rubbermaid drawer. Three drawers organize miscellaneous main piece parts like shirring and waistties , head accessories, and the socks and tights are rolled up together. Hats are in a separate hat box on the top shelf in my closet. Lolita stuff stays on the right and normie clothes to the left

My wardrobe organization might be much different if I had more than 20 main pieces and a bigger variety of tops

I organize by type, and within each type I kind of organize by color/pattern/fabric. I think it looks neater to go by type, but organizing by color would give you that pretty wardrobe-within-a-wardrobe effect if you had a really large and diverse collection (like 40+ pieces with multiple substyles or base colors). For small wardrobes though, I feel like it would be kind of haphazard and make things harder to find.

Be careful with what kind of plastic, if it's too brittle the stapling could make it beak/snap bits off easily.

Sewing supply stores, like Spotlight or Lincraft, and I've also seen them at more up-market variety stores.

It's not the actual store (there's dresses from totally different release times and non-AP things in there) but it sure does look like she styled it after the store! Super cute idea.
