What would be a good (rigid) fabric to imitate skin? I need it for some reverse appliques that are meant to be holes in a shirt since I think it would look better than actually showing my chest.

I'm not sure if I want to use lycra or spandex since I don't know what the base material will be yet, which is why I'm asking about non-elastics.

The absolute best would be silicone. You could create some extremely realistic skin with it, especially if you painted it afterwards. It's durable and you can choose how much stretch you want depending on the formulation. However, it's expensive and I don't know if you can run it through your sewing machine

I'm going to be making pic related for my next costume, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice in what to use as a sturdy base? My initial idea was to just attach everything onto a spandex glove but then I thought that might be too flimsy? Any ideas?

Probably just receive a gift. A majority of congoers are tired and cranky so walking around asking people to play your game might not go so well. You don't have to give something to EVERYONE you meet, maybe only people who recognize your costume or respond to you in character? A game is a neat idea for a meet up though!

So I made the helmet and gloves before I made the jacket for my costume. The yellows are 2 completely different hues, one is bright yellow the other is a darker golden sunset. It's pretty obvious when looked at.

depending on how much time you have, you can try and grab a better color spraypaint or a corrective color and do one layer on the helmet+gloves so that it blends closer to what you need

really your biggest issue is time purely because of how long it takes paint to dry, though worst case scenario if it's a weekend con you could just wait a day for finishing touches and cosplay tomorrow (unless you have travel time preventing you from doing work on it before leaving)

If I dye this red, will the pattern go away too? Fabric is chiffon.

It won't. The dye will just blend into the pattern, so you'll have darker splotches.

I made a Mccree robot arm for a friend, and my advice is to make it in two parts: the vambrace that goes up to the wrist, and a glove.

I used as a base for mine a Motorcycle glove. Find one with patches segmented along the fingers and with rigid knuckles. This gives you platforms to build on that are already lined up with how fingers work.

Try and get something as close to your color base as possible, the stretchy neoprene material of the glove just absorbed paint without changing color. Be advised.

I always use the fine closed cell package plastic. Apparently its called EPE foam.
It also helps to put your leds at a 90 degree angle if you can. And sand your plastic so it gets a frosted look.

Casual Cosplayer, Have done mostly done bought costumes such as 'Tobi' and 'Trafalgar Law'(Clothes and props bought, Most work was usually in getting the hair and beard right and all of Trafs Tattoo's). There was a TF2 Medic cosplay from years back that most parts where I still got the 'Working Medigun' (High powered flashlight mounted on a broken slingshot and a large PVC pipe with a red filter)

Blue or an aqua color if possible would be best based on the official illustrations. Don't know much about EL wires though so I can't help you there. Presumably you're gonna want some electrical tape to mask segments and thread the wire around the costume to minimize battery nodes.

If you're trying for Halloween, it's too late to make it yourself or commission it. It may even be too late to buy one off AliExpress unless you pay a lot for expedited shipping. Your best bet might be to go to a costume store and see if they have what you need.

"How do I make this costume" is not a simple question. A simple question would be along the lines of "what material would you guys recommend for this part of the costume".

You can't ask such a broad question and expect anyone to answer it or even be willing to approach it. Just off the top of my head, Scorpion's outfit has elements that would need to be made from cloth, foam, and leather (or vinyl) if you want accuracy. You need to do sewing, sculpting, painting, etc and those things can't just be easily summed up in one answer.

Look at the costume, break it down, and think of how to make the individual parts. Don't expect people to spoonfeed you a step-by-step tutorial of how to make an entire costume.

I plan on cosplaying this outfit with this weapon, and I'm totally lost as to where to start. I kind of want to make the weapon first, and I want to make it really glow using LEDs. Anyway, I'm completely without a paddle. What suggestions do you have?

in that case making an engraved pattern like that a lasercutter or engraver/cnc on plexiglass with leds illuminating from below or from the spine of the sword would be your best bet. You *could* engrave it by hand using a dremel but you'd need to be very careful about it.
3D print is also an option but commissioning the model and getting it printed is probably outside your range.

The standard pink sheets you can get at the hardware store. You'll need saws (preferably a band saw but you can cut it by hand too) and a power sander to shape it efficiently. Insulation foam is good for rigid structures. Once you shape it, you have to seal it with some kind of rubber like plastidip and then paint it.

Google LED strips and EL wires to see what I'm talking about. They're strips of LED nodes or fiber optic wires that can be cut to whatever length you want and are powered by 2 x AA batteries. You'll basically tape/glue them along the sides of the foam core and rig a switch near the handle. Probably need 2 or 4 strips total to get the proper luminescence.

Also don't sand any kind of polymer foam indoors without proper ventilation or a respirator unless you want to die. Plastic particulate matter in your lungs is not good.

You've got the right idea, but there's a lot of work that you could do as well.

Starting from the top- consider wearing a tight face guard like a nurse mask but maybe a plastic version? Not sure what exactly, but something to help your nose flatten to your face and look more like the character.

Next, you need a real trench coat for sure. Doesn't have to be leather, but should be light brown. the collar is the most important bit here. The striped pants are important too and easy enough to order.

As for smaller details, White scarf, purple gloves, and wear a white dress shirt under the jacket.

This will push your cosplay from "ah he is recognisable as rorshach nice cosplay" to "oh damn thats a good rorshach, awesome dude". As it is, 4/10. It's a little boring and lacks most of the on-model elements of the character. It is passable now but I think for less than 100 dollars you could make all the changes I mentioned. Pants for under 20, nice trenchy for 60, goodwill scarf and shirt for 6 or 7, and then get some cheapo gloves for the rest. Good luck mate.

Generally speaking you want to be as close as possible. Get every detail right that you reasonably can.

Anyone have advice for constructing 9S's coat? I am SO STUMPED on how to make the panels in particular, like how they separate at the bottom? Ideally I'd like to make it lined, which is why the construction is puzzling me.

If anyone can provide some pointers or maybe a commercial pattern that looks decently close to the reference (I've looked all over but haven't found much) I would greatly appreciate it!

I've tried my absolute best to come up with a coherent explanation, but I'm sure it's lacking, so if some things aren't clear, I apologise;
Essentially, you've got a double breasted coat, with a decorative panel at the centre (blue) shawl collar and a gunflap (that bit on the shoulder, pink on the diagram), and cuffed sleeves (top right pic). The sleeves are straight forward, nothing to add. Bear in mind that it's a masculine cut coat (i.e. it's meant to be closed left over right).
The bottom pic shows how the middle panel could be done- starting with a regular DB coat pattern, you would cut out a panel from the bottom front, on each side. The rest of the coat would be done as normal, except you'd want to have the closure be hidden, snaps would work for that. You would then make the front-centre panel (blue on the diagram) as a separate part, which would be attached to the coat front with buttons.
The gunflap could be made separately and topstitched to the coat before attaching the sleeves, but after making the main 'body' (front, sides, back and collar). The idea would be to attach it at the shoulders and armscye, but to leave it free at the middle (top left pic), so it can be lapped over the middle panel, and fastened to it underneath the collar (with a snap?).

if I bought a wig from arda in pale blonde and its making my skin look redder, does anyone know what undertones/which of their blondes wouldn’t have that effect? I’m pretty mixed up on how undertones work when i buy blonde wigs.

The look reminds me a bit of lace so I considered adding lace as a trim but I feel that wouldn't look right? Hand sewing the edges like a button hole would be do able but extremely tedious. I could use fray check a round the raw edges but that often looks ugly. Any other suggestions?

PVC and vinyl are literally just two different short names for the same material: polyvinyl chloride.

Anyone who has used Sintra or the equivalent by other names: have you had any issues with it softening in the sun? I was going to use it to make some props, but they go on my head and are black and I'll be wearing it at a very outdoor summer con (Colossalcon).

I'm just worried that between the color and being in direct sunlight anytime I'm outdoors they'll get hot enough to soften and start to lose shape. Can anyone help assuage my fears or should I consider other materials?

Sintra holds up a lot better than worbla, but if you're afraid of it softening, choose a slightly thicker sheet. Use superglue (cyanoacrylate) to glue sintra! It's incredibly strong bonding.

It's done all the time, but don't expect every contest to accept your cosplay, most contests require official art/design. Big example are the Zach fischer designs. Loads of big cosplayers do it.
Personally i'm not a big fan of it, unless the design is similar to the official art.

If you can make the mask itself you already have the sewing skills do do this. Make the mask in two separate pieces. The front and lining. Lining doesn't have to be for the whole mask, just the part that's going to be over your mouth.

Put the front of your mask on, Mark out the size of your mouth in a thick line with a fabric pen or tailor's chalk. Measure that line with a tape measure.

Buy a teeth zip with the closest measurement to that size. One the right colour and with teeth big enough to be visible. Anything that isn't a concealed zip should do.

Cut the mouth line you marked out earlier to the zip's measurement. Sew in the zip on the mask's reverse side like you would any other zip. Sew the lining over the top of it so that the zipper's teeth don't catch on your mouth or skin.

Please don't spray paint fabric, it will only end in misery for you. I've barely painted fabric, but the best thing by far that I've found is to use a template and a sponge to dab normal fabric paint on. The foam wedges that are meant for makeup are perfect, and you can find pretty much the same thing in the craft section that are probably a lot cheaper. Just keep dabbing on light layers until you're satisfied with the coverage.

Honestly, nobody will notice if you don't have the pattern on Yuugi's skirt. But I totally understand wanting to go 100% with it, there are too many half-assed 2hus out there.

That would be a disgrace in my opinion, but there are plenty of cons who allow them in less-official contests, and also fantasy cons who prefer original designs.
Least I would see is a 'cosplay' winner who doesn't commit to the official design and the difficulties/solutions that come with it than some fan design where everything is made properly suitable for the human body. A gijinka dress is far easier to make than a pokemon suit in the right proportions for example.

Frosted acryllic spraypaint on a clear plastic strip that runs the length of the LED strip. The frosted finish will diffuse tbe light from the LEDs.

However, EL wires are probably a much better choice for this project. The inscriptions on the BB version of the MLGS are less like inscriptions than swirls of light, so you could try and arrange the wires in a similar pattern. The wires would be especially bright, and the light they emit would naturally diffuse throughout the shell over the blade core.

Cutting them with a razor or scissors will obviously "work", but result in jagged edges and frayed threads. New to cosplay, but I have about half a year to make a costume in time for a con. Thinking of doing pic related, especially since I may be able to find a basis for the mask and chest during this Halloween season. If you can't use a hot knife, what I've done before is interface the last inch or two of fabric (however much you need), trace the shape onto the interfacing on the back side, then cut out the holes with embroidery scissors/exacto knife. As long as the fabric isn't silk or something that's incredibly prone to fraying, the interfacing is enough to keep the edges looking neat and tidy.

I've carried around a thermoplastic shield at Otakon with no problems, but when I accidentally let the same shield sit in the sun for four hours it did start to warp. As long as you're just walking outside/doing a photoshoot and not sunbathing, it should be fine.

For the clothes just go to a thrift store or Walmart. For the head make a tube out of plastic canvas that you can find in craft stores near the yarn and embroidery section. Round off the top with a cheap bowl or a foam half-dome. Cover the whole thing in thin black spandex stretched tight so it looks smooth. This will take some sewing. Paint or glue the eye shape on AFTER the fabric is stretched or it will get fucked up.

This is a really bad photo. Is the outfit actually black and white? I'm going to guess that the mask was knit or made with cotton jersey fabric, which allows the cosplayer to see somewhat and breathe. The details can be made separately then sewed on to the main piece.

I don't have a dremel but I discovered through experimenting that I can hand sand it, wipe it with a wet cloth, and the edges smooth out when heat sealed.

Use less dye and a white base fabric and you'll have light blue (royal blue). Start with tiny bits first and add more dye if you think it's too light.

If you go to the RIT site they have all sorts of color combinations in their library for you. Also, adding more water and less dye will dilute colors as a general rule, but check and see if there are any combos you can do to get the color you need with proper ratios.

Safari hats are pith helmets, which don't have a soft brim. Kaban's hat has a soft brim like a bucket hat but bucket hats usually have a flat top instead of a dome.

I need to simulate skin with fabric. It doesn't have to be perfect and I don't want to do something complex like casting and dying silicone.

I ordered some beige upholstry vinyl but it's not even close to my skintone. Is there a better material to use? Should I paint (or even apply makeup to) the vinyl to try and get it to look right?

The "simulated" skin is needed for inset appliques on a shirt with holes that normally would show bare skin, but I want don't have the tone/muscles on my chest to pull it off and want the build to be sturdier anyways.

What is the best approach to temporarily changing my hair color by a small degree?

I have the correct hair length, volume, and texture for a character, but I need to go a few shades redder. I do not want to use bleach, and would like the color to be temporary. My options appear to be tinted mousse, or utilizing a semi-permanent dye without pre-bleaching.

My natural color is the top block, and I'd like to go to the bottom block, or perhaps a shade or two redder, even. The costume will be a vibrant blue, so I should gain some additional appearance-of-red by contrast.

If not, anything that looks like leather will be fine, although fake leather may not stretch as well around corners. As you've got rather light hair, semi-permanent dye should work fine enough without bleaching first. The basic red ones aren't that expensive either.

You can wash out the colour immediately with an anti-dandruff shampoo iirc, so that shouldn't be an issue either.

I'm not familiar with the character, but from the looks of the photo I would try to go with heavyweight material with some texture to it, unlike the flat cheap cotton used in that costume. You're probably going to want to take the bunny suit route to make sure the sweet heart neckline can hold up on its own. Google search bunny suit tutorial and it'll talk about the layers such as the fashion fabric and its interfacing, middle boning lining, and inner lining fabric for comfort. I'd recommend Ben Nye creme colours. You apply with a sponge, set with translucent powder, and finish with makeup sealing spray. In my experience it stays on really well. I would do the black lines with liquid eyeliner.

It may also be valuable to get a light grey colour for some contouring because your face will look totally flat with pure white.

Looked up the instructions for iDye Poly, this will not work with spandex. For full-poly fabrics you'll need to mix the fabric in the water over a high-heat, and the heat will ruin the spandex. At best it'll 'set' and lose most all of its elasticity.

The question of dying spandex/lycra is a common question here and it is generally agreed that there is no feasible way of doing it at home. Polyester fibers essentially have their color baked into their composition (encased in the plastic polymers) and thus are incredibly difficult to recolor. It's not like natural fibers such as cotton or wool where the dye is soaked into the fibers and can easily be dissolved or modified.

You will be much better off buying another batch of spandex, preferably after ordering swatches to match the colors correctly.

Cream (Mehron’s clown white, Ben Nye’s Crème Color) is tradition theater "grease paint", where it comes in a cream or mouse consistency and is tacky to the touch unless you set it with powder. Its good for situations where you might come in contact with water or when you anticipate sweating a lot. It is highly likely to transfer onto clothes, skin or wigs.

Cake (Snazaroo, Wolfe FX, TAG, Diamond FX, Kryolan Aquacolor) is activated with water or some other liquid. It is probably the most easy to use but will run or smear if it comes in contact with water. Setting spray and powder can somewhat prevent this. It is very good for achieving small details.

Liquid (ProAiir, Kryolan Aquacolor Liquid) is, well, liquid. It can cover large areas more easily, and can be formulated with alcohol instead of water for longer lasting paint.

All of these can be applied with brushes or sponges. Practice before the day of your event. This look will look best with contouring, so make sure you get both black and white and perhaps a grey to make your face look three dimensional. Snazaroo is by far the cheapest paint listed. You can find it at Walmart, Michael’s and on Amazon. Next is probably Wolfe, which you can also find on Amazon. Most of the others you can find in theater supply stores, or on sillyfarm or jestpaints.

Eva foam would be the cheapest. Look up pepakura files to eva foam templates or something along those lines. You can make your pepakura files into templates for eva foam and construct it that way. Be aware though its gonna require quite a bit of experimentation to scale everything properly to accomodate for foam thickness and the size of your head.

Pick the right needle sizes and tensions for the right fabrics. Follow your machine's manual. Make mock-ups; it's fine to make 2-3 muslins before you make the final product. Just make a long oval shape for the two sides. Make the cape snap together and make a loop of fabric that velcros over that and holds the two loops down like a napkin ring if that makes sense. Most costume bows and knots look better if you don't treat them like a real knot.

For the thickness of that key you should be able to use thin EVA foam. It's called craft foam usually and it's very cheap and easy to work with. I make my patterns out of cardboard and then trace them onto the foam. One thing I would recommend is a scalpel or a craft knife to cut out your pieces rather than scissors for a smooth edge.

If you don't use Worbla you should add something to stabilise the EVA foam like carboard sandwiched between two pieces of craft foam. Or you can get thicker EVA foam but the edges would need to be sanded to keep them smooth. Worbla's quite tricky to work with for beginners and it's expensive but there are lots of tutorials online. Plus you'll need a heat gun to shape it properly.

If expense isn't an issue then Worbla would probably be easiest for the mask. Place a piece over something curved that's the same size as your face and heat it until it's shaped, then cut off the excess.

For the rope, I'd get a piece of rope or thick cord and use a doll needle to poke a hole through the centre, then thread garden wire through the hole to make it keep its shape. I'd make the base that sits on the top of the head out of cardboard and foam with a hole through the centre to glue the rope into.

That's a crazy complicated cosplay for your first one, anon. Good luck! Liquid resin and moulds would probably look best and starfishes/clamshells wouldn't be hard to come by. You can paint them once they're dry and it'd be easier than trying to shape them yourself.

Cuffs are fairly easy. Mark the pattern out onto stretch fabric and sew together with a zigzag stitch either by machine or hand. You'll also need a trim that stretches otherwise the stitches will pop when you put them on your wrists.

The necklace will be difficult since the latticework will make it very fragile and it still needs to be flexible enough to shape round your neck. I don't have any skill in jewellery making so I'd probably use sealed and painted craft foam for the band and craft foam wedged between Worbla for the pendant, and try to make it look metallic with detailing when I painted it.

Where could I find a wig to match this style? I've used the shops listed in the sticky and the only wig I found was out of my price range.

So I bought this 3d printed resin bow as 2 separate limbs and Id like to find a way to connect and disconnect them for easy travel. Ive considered drilling in a screw and just twist them together but the handle part is really thin and im worried about the weight of the limbs breaking the resin handle. Seriously, every time I've bought one it's ended up as a frizzy mess and I end up giving up on wearing it(and by extension doing the cosplay). I don't have as much trouble styling my own hair, but for some reason wigs just mess me up. I really want to do cosplays with them, but I feel like I'm cursed to tangle every wig I come in contact with. Does anyone have any really simple tips/tutorials for this?

First off, what manufacturer are you buying from? What style/length? What specific model? How are you trying to style it?

I think a lot of tricks with wigs--especially long, flowy ones--mostly go unspoken and everyone has to figure them out on their own. I'm assuming you're dealing with a long wig (shoulder length or longer), since those are the ones that have trouble with frizzing. The sad truth is that the nature of the fibers is going to make them tangle and frizz unless they're held together, and that means flowy-ness is really hard to maintain.

Number one most important piece of advice: get a good anti-static comb.

Next, something I learned after heavily dealing with a long wig is that giving them a bath with fabric softener helps a LOT. To the point where the next time I get a long wig I'll probably bathe it immediately before any styling. Fill your sink or a small tub with warm water and dump in a cup of fabric softener, swirl your wig around inside, and then rinse it off once it's thoroughly soaked. Squeeze out water and hang it to air dry. This will make it tangle less in addition to making the fibers much softer. I've also heard rubbing dryer sheets on a wig can help with tangling if the issue is static electricity. If it's not, they won't do much besides make your wig smell nice.

Heat treatment is your friend if you're using a wig you know is heat resistant. Frizzes can be removed by spraying the fibers with water and slowly going around the wig with a straightening iron. Polyester fibers are plastic, so the heat will cause them to soften, straighten, and then harden back straight. Same deal with curling irons, the wig will hold heat-treated styles pretty much permanently unless you straighten it again. Styling with a blow-dryer on a high heat setting with produce similar results with fibers maintaining their shape even being put through storage.

Don't be afraid to use lots of hairspray or styling gel since it rinses easy out of wig fibers.

I wasn't satisfied with that since it's a pain and I wanted to wear that cosplay around casually. Thinking about this one, I'm no expert on wigs but there's a few things I can break down. You'll probably have to learn to sew or at least glue wefts since even the base has different colors. Start with a short, black wig, transplant a semi-circle cutout of white in the front for the "highlight". Similar process for the back, transplant shorter white wefts along yhe neckline. The two white feathery bits will probably be best achieved through glueing wefts or fur to shaped EVA foam, hair gluing them down, and attaching them to the wig with magnets. Hi guys! I want to cosplay ladybug and I've noticed that the best way to do her mask is to use facepaint/body paint. Unfortunately my eyebrows are too thick.
I saw in an unrelated tutorial once that you can cover them with some fx materials? But I don't know how or where to start looking for this, and none of the tutorials I saw on YouTube for doing the ladybug mask covered this either. I can't simply use gluestick on them because they're just that thick.

No prob, I was thinking about doing Bondrewd and I have a buddy who's working on the cosplay right now. It's a great design, so I hope you can manage to get it built. Armor isn't too hard, it'll just require a good amount of practice through trial and error. Luckily EVA foam is cheap as fuck and you can get leather coats for pennies at Goodwill/thrift shops so you'll have a lot of room to experiment on a budget.

Sewing plush doodads on top would look a bit more accurate, but putting foam underneath would be 100x easier and look totally passable since nobody's going to cross-reference your Billy Hatcher cosplay against official art in the middle of a con. It's one of those characters that fans will be ecstatic to see regardless of tiny details.

It looks like a VERY specific design of fishing vest since those look like pouches, but you're probably best off doing a black life preserver if you can't sew since I doubt you'll be able to find a spot-on match at a reasonable price. For the tire and most of his armor it's just EVA foam. You can score into thicker pieces of foam to get the tread texture.

Anyone know where i can get an Akira Kurusu from Persona 5 wig or something similar before the 27th? i'm in the UK and bad at shopping.

Already bought one from Ebay but I doubt it will arrive in time.

1. In the futire don't buy wigs from eBay or other third party wig sellers unless you know what you're getting into, the quality will be questionable

2. Message the seller and ask if you can pay more for expedited shipping unless it already shipped

I don't know what wig stores are EU-based because I'm US and have only ordered from Arda, Epic cosplay, and China through Aliexpress.

Found some patches on Etsy. Should I get them sewn on or just glue them on?

I trying to power a strip of LEDs that will run inside a 1 inch PVC pipe.
The LED strip uses 5V 1A USB port to power it.
I was originally running just an external battery from a external battery (for phones) but it doesn't fit inside the pipe, so Im shopping for a better solution. Would just a simple AA battery with an adapter be best? Or some other solution?

What about coloring?

I'm looking to draw a straight, solid stripe up the sides of a zentai/morph suit, but am unsure what material and dyes mix together. I'd imagine cotton-lycra dyes well, but does it in practice? Any tips for actually applying it (wear the suit during, etc)?
